  • In this video we do a steering box swap to the Astro van gear box. We drill, tap and install the DIY4X hydro assist steering box cap. Install a grand Wagoneer pitman arm and wrap up the custom steering. I go for a first test drive and have to fix the wondering front end by adjusting the caster. We are getting super close to hitting the trail with this truck!

    Ditch that rag joint and put a jeep steering shaft in it. Made the steering feel so much better having a u joint instead of the rag joint

    I had a old cj7 that wandered and got super squirrelly on the road, shimmed the front end to get positive camber and changed my life haha.

      Haha, you’re welcome. It hasn’t been driven out in the wild yet, just in the neighborhood. So we will see this weekend. I will start driving it around and testing.

      Stock master, with the abs module removed. Could be better, but stops just fine. So I haven’t messed with it.

      Yup, especially with big tires. Once I flex out the front to full droop and check my pinion angle. I will see if the driveshaft can take a few more degrees.

    Thanks for putting the part numbers and model years for the box and pitman arm. Forums leave me with more questions than answers when I go down the “Astro box” rabbit hole haha

    Kelly are you going to build a double sheer on the pitman arm? I would if have the room to do so.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  Год назад +1

      Not right now, maybe in the future. The ram is going to take up a lot of the force. If I had no hydro assist I wouldn’t do it without double sheering the pitman arm.

    I usually try setting my caster at 5-6deg that 3deg seems a little short.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  Год назад

      It is a 5 degrees, I want a little more but I am constrained by my front driveshaft and pinion angle.

      If it was say 8" longer you could get the extra couple deg you want..Like a reduction box added in there.haha
