They definitely have the talent, budget and workforce to make great games, they're just always rushing it.
That's good to know. I thought odyssey's combat was dreadful. No feeling of weight behind it and, like you say, health sponge enemies. Couldn't believe it when the review said this was WORSE than that.
@@amysteriousviewer3772 Good analogy. I respect Ubisoft admiration to try something new and creative but the problem is they have good idea or concept but poor execution. Take a look at watch dogs legions.

Combat looks way more satisfying in this game than the past two. Decapitations, dismemberment, the enemies actually get flung off the weapons especially with the axes. You never saw that in the prior games.
@@johncrafton8319 Combat in the other games wasn't really that great either (Odyssey and Origins). Spam light and heavy attacks over and over and dodge infinitely with no stamina bar or risk of being over aggressive... Zzzzzzzzzz. This game has all that plus dual wielding, attack canceling, stamina management, different move sets depending on what weapon is in your off hand, not to mention it's more visceral in general. Come on now.
Which sucks because now they did a mediocre Viking game, which means we won't get another open world viking game from a better developer for a long time. Fing Ubisoft had to steal it.
They go on sale so quickly because they’re gonna rush the sequel to market anyway. When was the last time they released a game that wasn’t a buggy mess at release?
Boom, another game I can skip for now! Will wait for Ubi to fix the bugs and hopefully update the combat. Because it's incredibly dumb to not have combat in a VIKING game be impactful!!
Also missed oportunity to break a bit the "cliché" of "brutal bloody vikings" and make stealth more relevant again. Sad. Gonna wait for the complete edition (with all DLC) for deep sale. Wich is sad to say at release i guess ? é_è.
@Jan Rikardsen Dude, Black Flag has probably the worst melee combat I've seen in my life, 3 was a bit better. Unity was slow and floaty but better than Syndicate, and earlier games were either waiting around for counters or braindead killing sprees in Brotherhood. The franchise never had good combat.
0:24 Ah, yes, the classic viking battle strategy that's one part ring around the rosie, two parts "you can't catch me, you can't catch me," all spitting in the face of physics.
I'm definitely getting it, I just don't know when. I really like the recent AC games mainly for the exploration and the open world, so I don't think I'll be bothered by the shoddy combat too much.
I think Ghost of Tsuhima has really set the bar for 3rd person open-world combat. I picked up Middle Earth: Shadow of War as one of the PS+ freebies this month, and man, I've been completely spoiled by Ghost of Tsushima's combat engine. That's where my mind went after watching this video. I'd have loved to see a heavy focus on the combat. Huge battles, people everywhere, mud in the camera and having to use your shield to block incoming attacks from different angles. You shouldn't even be able to see through the crowd. Instead it's just a guy sliding around the floor with a wooden axe whilst his opponents throw random attacks while 15m away. This would probably have been a great game 15 years ago. It seems I'm a minority but I don't care how good my characters beard can look if I just have to button mash my way through the game.
Don’t get it. 150 hours of game time just to watch evior pull a vin diesel at the end and say family over the creed and never joins, and basim turns out to be the villain. Awful plot twist
53 hours in and confident to say that this is my favorite assasins creed, later on combat feels addicting being able to have access to an arsenal of cool abilities, also the story is so damn interesting Its like a movie sometimes.

ikr, ac worked as a franchise as long as it had some sort of conflict to connect the games into one another. Now its 15 minute segments of watch dogs easter eggs in a random(unexplored as a character) chick's laptop
Unity is by far the last real AC, exploring a city, the story of the Eden apple and it is and will ever be the last AC with crowd stealth Gameplay and it was the last who performed a crowd ki and it was the last AC with the original graphic engine, unity looked brutal gooood!
@MortalGamerDC1 85 Investigate a bit more on how far the ambition where in unity, not only the architecture, the amount of details in physics, eviromental story telling, and graphics, it was also the last game in the series with that engine cause they decided to move more away from crowd stealth system, yes gameplay as a mechanic was a bit weak but still, unity where on the right way if there weren't a huge change in the game series itself, it just got lost in becoming a repetitive series.
I can't wait to play this... In six months once I'm done with Cyberpunk and this is cheaper and has been finished with patches. Ubisoft games are best played well after release.
Been playing since 4am and it's just past 11am now. Beautiful game. Buggy. Lots of visual glitches. I love it, but they really need to drop the animus stuff altogether and spin these open-world ACs off into their own series. Whenever present day stuff appears, even if it's just UI elements, I'm more annoyed than anything else by the shoehorning in of legacy storyline stuff.
The present day hasn’t been good since AC3, if they brought back Desmond and everyone else then id love to have modern day, but now I feel the same as you whenever a present day scene starts.
Had a gut feeling that this was a bargain deal. More than happy to play this in the eventual 2021-22 release downtime especially as a $40 MEGA ENHANCED ULTIMATE FINAL EDITION. Thanks ACG for the insightful review. Top quality content as always.
Idk if you've finally gotten around to playing this. If you're on PS5 the "complete edition" is $50. It includes this, the season pass, berserker pack(?), and the standalone Ragnarok.
Dude you've become a go to reviewed for me, GREAT JOB! even in cyberpunk case, as soon as I saw you passed it knew smthng was fishy there and did not get it - thanks for taking time and caring on these reviews, really helps save money :D
So it just occurs to me, that Ubisoft has now made THREE games set in England at various time periods. AC Syndicate, Watch Dogs Legion, and now, AC Valhalla. Just a fun fact.
First ACG review I don’t really agree with, but to each their own. Game runs fine on my PC after the new driver and day 0 patch. Very High settings with a 2070S, i9-9900KS, 32GB Ram on 1440p UW averaging 50-60fps, which is very playable imo. Probably not the best on performance/graphics on PS4 gen, otherwise the game looks and plays stunningly, These graphics are easily the best is the AC series to date, and it's not close. Still the best game reviewer on youtube! Keep up the good work ACG.
It saddens me to see that stealth isn’t even really considered in reviews of AC games these days due to it not being that notable. I remember the days where you played as a badass Assassin that could blend into crowds, free-run over intricate cityscapes, and sneak into heavily guarded compounds to take out a target without anyone suspecting a thing. It was the best feeling and such a unique one compared to all the other games out there. The Assassin’s Creed games were known for their innovations in epic stealth gameplay which was what the Creed order in the story was all about, and it feels like they’ve just given up on pushing the boundaries of great stealth. And don’t even get me started on how they ruined an originally great and promising story.
EXACTLY!! Im actually offended that people are praising this game to be the best one out. I'm convinced that none of them actually played the original AC and noted everything you mentioned that made AC what it truly was. After unity or syndicate the play style just went out the window and became something completely different. Also the stealth mechanics are terrible. All you do is hide in bushes and 6/10 you can't even assassinate anyone because they're clumped together in large groups in a fort. The air assissnation is the only mechanic that is still present. The parry/counter kills were also extremely fluid and cooler than just parrying and dodging attacks. I'm relieved that at least one person recognized how the real AC was before this garbage. And honestly odyssey and origins were way better and had a stronger story structure than this one.
All of these games should have a FUN mode, where you can tweak the combat to be FUN. Want to make your character TOTALLY OP??? FINE. Want to make EVERY ATTACK just dismember enemies in glorious fashion?? DO IT. Want all your arrows to be EXPLOSIVE??!?! YES PLEASE. Give gamers the choice to play a "normal" way or to enable FUN modifiers. I don't care if it would make the game "less realistic". IT'S A VIDEO GAME.
I feel like i saw alot of people compare ghost of tsushima to assassins creed. I dont understand that at all. Assassins creed has been mediocre af since black flag. Its boring and crazy this franchise is still going. Its terrible and the combat is terrible.
We come from the land of the ice and snow From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow The hammer of the gods Will drive our ships to new lands To fight the horde, sing and cry Valhalla, I am coming
@@arcticwind1368 Not him, but imo Valhalla does make one important improvement from Odyssey: enemies are no longer HP sponges. That's nice. But everything else is worse. I think ACG is right about the overall feeling though, it just isn't fun to do combat in Valhalla, and that's a big fucking problem when combat is what you spend most your time doing.
I think the Assassin's Creed Formula is getting stale seems like they are going off the rails on this Franchise and not taking their time creating a great game to the Franchise . They need to do something different . I did like Assassin's Creed Origins though , Oddyssey was so so .
@Jan Rikardsen Wow, sour much? The DualSense is pretty incredible. Why not just be happy for people getting something innovative even if it's not on your platform of choice? It doesn't take anything away from you.

I think the next ac should go back to the ac 3 through rouge combat. Like Shadow of Morder or Ghost of Tsushima style where you're all over the place just slaying people with ease, but it's super badass so it's entertaining.
Tsushima was worse than Nioh tbh. You had four stances and all they were about was countering specific enemies which was purely optional. Least Nioh made every weapon act in 3 very different ways you could build around to your prefered playstyle with each stance.
Fortunately there's more to games than the combat system. And let's face it Tsushima had a massive beautiful world - that was completely empty, lifeless and mind numbingly boring. At least ubisoft know how to fill their sandbox.
So it seems Ubi has learned nothing about how to craft engaging , kinetic and functional combat systems. Sigh. Guess I'll be skipping this one as well smh

Combat looks way more satisfying in this game than the past two. Decapitations, dismemberment, the enemies actually get flung off the weapons especially with the axes. You never saw that in the prior games.
It's just visual. Combat more or less just consists of mashing the heavy button.

I always wait for a sale on Ubisoft games. They seems to make pretty mediocre games that end up on sale relatively quickly.
Yup I notice that too. Let's say next 2 months 25% percent off
For me usually getting the dlc for the regular price game seems good enough
Which sucks because now they did a mediocre Viking game, which means we won't get another open world viking game from a better developer for a long time. Fing Ubisoft had to steal it.
