The dance shown in this is one of the classical dance forms of India, called "kathak", It's from the northern part of the country(Uttar Pradesh). And the story depicted in between is of Lord Shri Ram who killed Ravana, the demon who misused his power for evil things(the one shown behind with 10 burnt heads during the conversation of the main leads in this) in the ancient history of Indian subcontinent and restored dharma, Lord Shri Ram is the major deity in Hinduism and is the seventh avatar of lord Vishnu, Efra recognized the person who was playing the role of Shri Ram as Krishna, lord Krishna is the eighth avatar of lord Vishnu. Shri Rama is the central figure of the ancient Hindu epic "Ramayana". The festival being celebrated in the song is Vijaya Dashami/Dussehra which is celebrated as Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, it's like winning of good over evil.

Uttar Pradesh is massively diverse culturally so it becomes a bit misleading because the Eastern and the Wester part of the state was never greatly influenced by Kathak. Specifically, Kathak comes from the Awadh/Oudh region of UP with Lucknow as its capital.

This movie was visually and musically perfect. As an art student myself, my appreciation was off the roof for everything they served here. Unfortunately, the storytelling fell flat. It wasn’t necessarily bad, the thing is that they tried to use “partition” (*the timeline where Britishers had recently left, the tension between Hindus and Muslim grew to a point where the country was about to be divided in two*) while including religious elements as they Glorified and represented an India that didn’t exist in that specific timeline. The fact is that an India similar to the one showcased in the mv did exist years before britisher step foot in our country- during the British reign all there was, was hunger and poverty. This beautiful, rich and culturally diverse india that the world once sought was destroyed after the Britishers’ arrival. The atmosphere they created here DID NOT fit the timeline and none of us could digest that. For someone who doesn’t know much about the history of India, they might enjoy this movie a lot; It’s impossible for us to do the same because independence and partition is a huge deal and any kind of misuse of the freedom struggle and history usually makes us a bit uncomfortable.

Dear Waleska Herrera, it's really fascinating and funny to see how you both try to guess what the background characters are. This whole song actually conveys the epic story of **Ramayan** in a *very very* concise form. All the characters correspond to Ramayan.
Those were not cupids but Lord Ram using arrows to shoot down the big demon "Ravan" (burning in the background), who is again a character of Ramayan.

at 5:21 - 5:33 it is not called Sargam but phrases of Taal (Indian rhythmic cycles). It's a common practice to represent the Taal composition structured into syllables with every different beat of any rhythmic instrument. Widely used in classical form. That is what going on here.
The burning statue you are seeing is of a character 'Ravan(a)' from the Epic poem 'Ramayan(a)' (story of
God Shri Raam(a)). At one of our festivals called Dushahera, we burn the statue of Ravan(a) remembering God Shri Raam(a) killing Ravan(a) as Good conquering on Evil.

For the translation of the dialogues at the end, I'll try my best and fellow South Asians can correct me if I make a mistake. But before that, who's who
Madhuri is the lady in pink who started singing first i.e. Shreya's voice
Alia is girl that Waleska called baby faced - she's more or less the same age as you Waleska - Shreya and Vaishali's voice
Woman in the white sari is a maid who works for Alia's in-laws i.e. the Chaudry's
Varun is the buff looking man in the red kameez
13:27 Madhuri: Your voice is great but it lacks a bit of salt. And to maintain Raag, you need to live a salty life. (in a way she means your voice needs a bit more seasoning)
13:45 Alia: And if there's too much salt, life becomes bitter... I've come to learn music (sangeet) from you
13:55 Madhuri: Over here, we call music (sangeet) songs (gaana)
13:59 Alia: I'm willing to pay any price you ask for in order to learn singing (gaana)
14:04 Madhuri: Our art (kala) is so great, that it can't be given a price. Are you married? (kala is kind of hard to translate but it felt most accurate).
    Alia nods...
Madhuri: I've observed that once someone goes around that fire, the fire inside them blows out. (by "going that fire" I believe she's referring to getting married in the Hindi way where they literally go around the fire a few times).
14:24 Alia: To reignite that fire is why I'm here. Please don't let me leave here hopeless (na umeed)
14:33 The Maid: Roop (Alia's characters name), it's almost evening. We should get going (i.e. go back home).
14:39 Madhuri to the Maid: You work at Chaudry's (Alia's in-laws family name).
The Maid: Yes (yes Efra jee means yes )
14:45 Madhuri to Alia: Does you family/in-laws know, that you've come to meet me?
    Alia: Yes, they know
15:34 Madhuri: Come again tomorrow, I'll listen to your voice again. And if I like your voice again then I'll teach you. For the moment, I'm tired of this conversation, Khuda Hafiz (means goodbye but not literally)
18:09 Varun to Alia: I've heard all the voices of those tawaifon (the people who live in that place Alia just came out from) in this bazaar/market, your voice is the only one that has more love than pain in it
19:34 Varun *grabs her hand*: The farther you go away, the closer you pull me to you... Don't hide the beauty of your eyes with your eyelashes
(this part doesn't translate well word to word, but he was trying to say was "don't hide your eyes by looking down" because when someone is looking down you can't see their eyes but their eyelashes - hopefully that made sense. And Efra, chupa means to hide)
I did my best so hopefully that helped you guys understand the character interactions. If I made a mistake, fam tell me and I'll make the edits

Yes you are partially right, Its actually the God "Ram" and they are portraying a scene from the Mythological Epic "RAMAYANA" and the song is about that too. Both "Krishna" and "Ram" was actually an avatar or reincarnation of "Lord Vishnu" here on earth but during different timelines, Lord Ram reincarnated in the era before Lord Krishna known as "Treyta-Yug" (Era of the Truth/Honor/Honest beings). Lord Krishna came in the "Dwapar-Yug" which came after.

      Correction :
      Rama - Treta Yuga
      Krishna - Dwapara Yuga
2 Ayanas (six month periods) = 1 year or one day (day + night) of the devas
360 days of the devas = 1 year of the devas
12,000 years of the devas = 4 Yugas
      Reckoning of time for Brahma.
12,000 years of the Devas = 1 day of Brahma (4320,000,000 human years). This day is divided into 10, 000 parts called charanas.
The charanas are divided as follows:
      The Four Yugas
4 charanas (1,728,000 solar years) Satya Yuga
3 charanas(1,296,000 solar years) Treta Yuga
2 charanas(864,000 solar years) Dwapara Yuga
1 charanas(432,000 solar years) Kali Yuga
The cycle repeats itself so altogether there are 1000 cycles of yugas in one day of Brahma.

So! The thing is, Alia (in white) is going to the place where another pink clad woman is teaching bunch of girls how to dance (Kathak dance) and sing. As she is going there...in the market a theatre group is enacting a Hindu epic RAMAYANA in the streets (so those mystical creatures were performers) as its a festive day. At the end they burn a giant idol of evil king Ravana to depict victory of good over evil.
Better not start Bollywood with 'Kalank' and go for Bajirao Mastani or Padmavat.
    Love your reactions❤️

The story playing simultaneously in the background is the Epic Ramayana. The events and life story of Lord Rama (whom you are calling the blue man), Sita Mata ( the queen, also known as Jaanki) and Laxman (Ram's brother). In the end the 10 headed lit up structure is Ravan (the one who kidnapped Sita).
    Love from India❤

This song has a festival of Dussehra in the background. It is a festival of good over evil. When Lord Rama killed the ten headed demon Ravna.(Ten headed signifies he was intelligence as ten men).Ravna was a scholar and King of Lanka ,but he committed only one mistake in his life that he abducted Lord Rama's wife Sita.On this day of Dussehra Rama was able kill Ravna with the help of his monkey soldiers and got his wife back.Every year effigies of Ravna are burnt to memorize the day.Its a long story.(Ramayana)
Twenty days after Dussehra comes Diwali(the main festival of India)
The man main lead's name is Varum Dhawan(a very good dancer)
    The classical dance is 'Katthak'
Every Indian woman is fond of gold jewelleyas shown in the song .It is considered auspicious.
Loved to see your reaction to this song.I also had requested u earlier for the same.Thank u

Ravana had actually r@ped thousands of women before even Maa Sita was born. He had murdered millions just because they refused to accept him as a "deity".
Kidnapping Maa Sita was only a catalyst for the destruction of Ravan. And the reason why he didn't r@pe her too was because he was cursed by a gandharva woman that the next time he touches a woman without her consent his head will be blasted in to pieces.

It was a great reaction guys. The thing with 4 faces that was burning was temporary statue of Ravana. Basically the entire background scene was depicting different phases of Ramayana, a holy scripture of Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism). Ravana was a demon king who had captured wife of Lord Ram and hence Ram had fought a war with him to end him, his bad deeds. Ravana had 10 heads and that statue showed 4 of them. Festival Dussehra is celebrated by burning temporary statues of Ravana as a symbol of good winning over the evil.
Hopefully this information was helpful! 🙏

  • @savani1093
    @savani1093 2 года назад +45

The mythological story (ramayan) is a metaphor for what’s happening in the scene. Without giving too many spoilers, eg. Near the start, Sita (the goddess) is bound by the line (represented by fire) in order to keep her safe. When she steps outside the line she is abducted by Ravan the demon. Similarly, the character of the girl is going to visit a brothel (it’s not a palace :)) to learn dance from the lady at the brothel. Hence they draw the parallel that she is stepping “outside of her line of safety” as in those days it was frowned upon to go and visit such a place plus to show that she’s no longer in control of her destiny. Later on they show the burning ravan (demon) in the back which is supposed to symbolise good over evil which is again another parallel to the story.
I would also strongly suggest you check out Arijit Singh’s song “kalank” from this movie in your own time perhaps - but it’s a masterpiece

Its one of the oldest in the world, the language and myths inspired other parts of the worlds which were in nomadic/dark age during those times. English also has its origins from Sanskrit. Though the history of South India is even older and its base is completely different.

The procession that you thought was Ramayana epic bring enacted. Also the elder actress, Madhuri Dixit, here in the video in pink dress is a veteran actress who is one of the best dancers in bollywood, and the younger one, Alia Bhatt, in white dress is actually a better actress to be called a dancer, but most of the bollywood actors and actresses are really good at dancing. Alia said in an interview that she practiced for over a month to get that much choreography as graceful as possible as she was going to be dancing in front of Madhuri and she wanted to look perfect.
