    Great review…appreciate you calling out the cons. Having used the Arccos system extensively for a year, I can say their platform is similarly challenged with capturing all of the shots accurately. This being said, the value a user can get out of strokes gained is immense if they are able to put the time into tweaking rounds, analyzing the data, and working on the areas of improvement that these apps can identify.

    I enjoyed the review…however, I use the watch for the stats tracking and have found no issues. I upgraded for the old version as I lost the watch on a recent trip. Upgrading was easy and over the 50 or so rounds I’ve done now I have found no issues with it not picking up clubs. I don’t use it for keeping track of my score, I use a paper scorecard lol. The editing afterwards is not too difficult apart from as you say, you need to get a penalty shot in there.
    Overall the benefits of tracking my stats outweighs these issues.

    Your first negative about Pin Collect saying it it’s very accurate about 2 feet. To me that’s much more accurate than guessing where the pin was after the round. Secondly having to practice swing the club to pick up the club you’re hitting, I just hit the shot and it detects what club I just hit. Lastly not having Stapleford format isn’t a problem for most people. I for one have never used it. I love being able to see the shots I hit overlaid on the satellite image of the golf course.

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching and sharing nbargolf.
      When it comes to the pin collect, I feel a margin for error of 2ft is significant, especially if it means I'm relying on stats telling me if the putts are long or short.
      I can only speak for my own experience, and I know there will be several shots a round which don't get picked up, and I have to consciously remember to do a purposeful practice swing.
      When it comes to Stapleford, it's a far more common game in the UK than the US, so for me and many others its a frustration.

    • @ianburton9223
      @ianburton9223 Год назад

      @@GolfGuyReviews An error of 2 ft on a GPS location is too optimistic. Even military GPS cannot be that accurate. Civilian GPS error can be 10 ft. Which rather means that putting statistics in terms of distances for any GPS device cannot be totally reliable, no matter how much you pay for it.

  • @davidmorris7094
    @davidmorris7094 Год назад +2

    I have one of these and it never misses a shot ... because it doesn't know if you've made a shot or not. The wrist band reads the club tag NOT if you make a shot, this is why Shot Scope tell you to make a few practice swings so the band can read the tag. Then you walk to your ball after you've hit it and the GPS reads where you are (therefore it reads distance hit) when you select your next club so NEVER EVER take out your club before you intend to use it as it messes up the shot record. If you were take out your driver, get the V3 to recognise it (display D on the screen) by taking a few practice swings, walk 300yds, pull out your 7 iron, take a few practice swings, walk 200yds to the green, pull out your putter, take a few practice swings and the press pin, you've just recorded an eagle on a par 5 without touching a ball or making a hit. You don't have to even wear it. As long as you hold the tag to the band so it recognises the club and after you hit the ball you walk to it, get the band to recognise the next club the GPS has registered the distance shot, calculates distance left etc and away you go.

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching and sharing, very helpful. At the time of recording, I didn’t realise the tags are activated when in close proximity to the watch; as shotscope say to take a few practice swings I had wrongly assumed they were activated by the motion. I’ve since ensured I hold the tag close to the watch and it picks it up not a problem…so long as I remember to do that. And as you say, don’t change your mind once once you’ve registered your club 👍

    • @ianburton9223
      @ianburton9223 Год назад

      @@GolfGuyReviews You can change your mind after a club has been registered because the watch registers only the last club used at a particular location. This gives rise to another issue, for example taking several shots to get out of a bunker. The watch registers a tag name and location. If the location is the same, only one shot is registered. This means you can have several practice swings without registering a shot but several bunker shots within less than about 10 yds of each other will be only one shot on the watch.

    Getting the watch and the sensors for your clubs is definitely a great value for the price, however between the required practice swings and the editing in the app afterwards, that’s a big time investment. Certainly with these types of products you’d hope that the tracking is easy and intuitive. Maybe other more costly units do it better? Or perhaps we’re not quite there with the technology. Great in-depth review though!

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  3 года назад +2

      I am tempted to buy the Garmin sensors that go with the S42 (at another £200ish) to see if there’s any noticeable difference…
      I listened to the creator of the Decade app yesterday also say it takes around 10-15 mins to update their app with similar information after the round….I guess it depends if people are ready for this new additional process. Do the long term benefits outweighs the additional drain on your time? Probably, but not for everyone

  • @midhc5072

    I think you’ve been over critical. I’ve used Arccos and while Arccos are better for SG data, it’s a pain having a phone in your pocket and misses shots. I now have V3 and find it more reliable and easier to use.

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching Phil. I agree that having to have the phone in your pocket is a pain (although I don't think you need to do that with a new version?)
      I feel I've given a fair account of my experience, and I stand by my summary, the shotscope will help you collect some great data and will help you improve if you use it in the right way....but you have to be prepared to take the time after every round to make sure your shots have been tracked properly, as bad data won't help anyone, and I've yet to play a round where I haven't had to correct the data in the app afterwards.

    • @midhc5072
      @midhc5072 2 года назад +1

      @@GolfGuyReviews Arccos is also prone to missing shots, particularly putts and with it's limited gps accuracy, regularly misplaces shot positions. Having switched to the V3 @shotscope I find that far more accurate. Arccos still requires you to have either the caddie link or your phone in your pocket. Caddie link is notorious for missing strokes and won't give you yardages like Shotscope does. Where Arccos is better, is in the SG analysis, but how much SG info does the average amateur want? They just want to know where they need to improve.

    • @midhc5072
      @midhc5072 2 года назад +1

      The strap is actually the antenna for the GPS. The desktop app needs work though as the editing isn’t intuitive. I haven’t found any need to do more than one practice swing. With the V3, you can at least easily see that your club has been recognised by the watch before taking your shot and your phone doesn’t need to have the app running in the background draining the battery. The SG analysis has improved and more importantly, there’s NO SUBSCRIPTION 👍🏻

  • @joewest826
    @joewest826 Год назад

    If you don't take practice swings and you don't verify the watch recognizes each club, then you will have to do a lot of editing after the round. When editing shots, it doesn't matter where the pin really is because at that point your just counting putts. The watch is measuring the difference between where the putters tag was in relationship to the last stroke and when you hit the pin collect button. It doesn't make a hill of beans as to where the pin actually is in time and space to your stats as long as you putt out and press a pin collect button. If you don't do that then you will have to remember the number of putts and the distance when you edit. The watch also doesn't recognize gimme putts. If you leave a put close and it's a gimme just walk over and tap your putter on the flagstick, then hit the pin collect button. Or hit the putt anyway even though it's a gimme to let the watch know you've taken another stroke. Or if you're being honest you will have to edit those in the app. It's not that hard to add penalty stokes on a hole once you train yourself how to access that function on the watch. Where it gets tricky is when you have to hit 2 balls off of the tee. Like in a stroke and distance penalty or hitting a provisional. But even these can be accounted for if you get used to using the penalty function of the watch.
    If you don't want to do a lot of editing simply check your watch before you swing. If you verify the watch senses the club on each swing, you won't have to edit missed shots. If the current club icon isn't showing up simply tap the club's sensor to the watch band and it will recognize what club, you are using. The sensor is in the watch's band and the watch must be worn on the wrist that's closest to the tags on the clubs, i.e., left wrist for a right-handed player. This is easy to get into the habit of doing. Even if you take practice swings you should still verify that it has registered the club being used. It's not that hard to look at the watch to see if the club's icon is showing. This watch is designed to give you yardages and track stats to help you improve the week areas of your game. It will not however improve brain function. Meaning that it still takes some manual input to function accurately. If you want real time scoring, then use a traditional scorecard or the on-course app on your phone. I use a phone app as well as the watch while I'm playing. The phone app gives me a visual of the holes layout and lets me keep score and the watch tracks my shots for distance of various clubs, number of shots, putts and length of round. It does take some getting used to, but I love my Shot Scope watch. I also think it's a good value for what it does.

    Brilliant review that reflects exactly my experiences of using this watch for the last year - it needs a lot of time after the round to get the accurate data you need to exploit the capability. ALSO, in the 1.5 years I’ve had 3 replacement watches due to serious hardware failure issues (I think the replacements are reconditioned which then break)..gps didn’t pick-up, button failed after 2 rounds, strap to sensor failed and now my battery doesn’t charge after only having this watch for 8 months…every time so far the support has resolved the situation BUT you need your watch to play and it takes a couple of weeks to sort…I’m thinking of moving to Garmin!!!

    I think this seems like the perfect watch for a beginner golfer like myself. I'm sick of using my phone already and I've only played a handful of rounds. Obviously a phone gives me a course map, but actually I don't know how much I use that - normally just to measure to bunkers etc. This watch does that.
    Thanks for the review! Hopefully updates continue to come to the watch. It seems a bit to me like they've tried to be too clever, and limit the interaction required too much. I totally agree with them that watches that require you to select the club manually are a PITA, but this is too far the other way IMO, having to take practice swings to detect the club. The way they should have done it is
    1) you select a club
    2) you press a button on the watch while holding the club
    3) you hit it
    That way, you don't need to do a certain swing ritual to get it to detect the club; you don't need to hope that it's picked a shot up (you've told it to capture one); and yet you still don't have to enter the club manually
    Maybe I should email them!!
    Thanks again

    • @ianburton9223

      The practice swing is only one way to ensure the watch detects the club. The way many users do this is to touch the tag on the club to the part of the watch strap nearest the ground - thats where the RFID airial is. When you tag the club to the watch strap you can see the club in use has been registered becuase the tag name is shown bottom right on the watch screen. You should do this when you reach your ball. Some people do this when they get out of the buggy, then walk 30 yards to the ball. That can give you a shot at the buggy and another when you get to your ball.
      So really the watch already can do exactly what you are asking for.

    Excellent review. I’ve found similar issues as you, mainly over failure to track shots and also with having to edit on the app. A few other examples. If I take a practice swing outside a bunker it records the shot outside and I have to move shot location to inside the bunker. If it fails to track a second shot on a hole, it gives an incredibly long drive and you have to add the shot from where you think you hit it. On putting, I now use manual setting to track each putt and then hole location. When using auto, it tracks if you take a practice stroke away from your ball. Strokes gained is useful, but it would be better if it remembered which setting you use rather than starting at Tour Pro every time. Having said all that, I enjoy using Shotscope and the analysis of my game. The good points far outweigh the issues, as most of them can be resolved on the app. However, if you don’t edit your round on the app your stats will not be accurate. Rant over.

    A lot of good information not covered in other reviews. Not being able to see your score during the round is a bit of a bummer. I mean I do not want to go back to having to use a scorecard to track my game which I do now with an app. Does the Shot Scope app keep track of that information so you could view it occasionally during a round? Plus the penalty feature, or lack of, is a little off putting. Seems like the watch might be geared toward better players? Got me re-thinking the purchase now. Good review.

    • @GolfGuyReviews

      Thanks for watching Alan. You can’t view your score at any time during the round, and will likely be wrong when you upload the data to the app so will need to be reviewed.
      You can mark penalty shots on the watch during the round, but because you can’t check if it worked, and you have to remember to do it, I just didn’t bother in the end and added them after, given I was probably going to have make edits anyway.
      From my experience it’s priced right, because the significant discount compared to the Garmin is the trade off for the more frustrating elements of watch and app.

      @@GolfGuyReviews Thanks for the clarification. I will probably still get one since it looks real easy to use and I want to collect the data, but not showing your running score seems like a real oversight. For stableford rounds there's an option called "pick up" to register a hole you did not finish.
    Regular users tag the club to the strap where the aerial is found to minimise or even eliminate missed shots. You can see that a club position has been registered when the name of the tag appears just to the right of the hole/par numbers.
    Shots that travel less than 55 yards are automatically excluded from statistics.
    To eliminate practice swings being recorded as shots the watch does not detect multiple swings from the same place - this means that taking several shots to get out of a bunker will be recorded as one shot.
    My impression of your video is that you've tried the watch for a couple of days, have not read the user documentation or the extensive help pages on the ShotScope support pages and so you have missed a lot of information, and got quite a few things wrong.
    Have you done a follow-up to this video after you had resolved all the issues you misleadingly raised?

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to share Ian. I used the watch quite a bit before sharing my thoughts, it’s something I fee sets me apart from other channels.
      At the time of recording I hadn’t realised there was a pick up button, but from what I remember it is a little hidden in the menu, and the watch doesn’t track stableford…not that I’d be that bothered as I always have to edit the scores in the app afterwards anyway.
      I think I do reference in the video that the stats ignore extreme shots so help with the stats.
      And in regards to the tracks, at the shot Shotscope say to take a few practice swing to get it to register, so I hadn’t realised the tags work on proximity to the watch.
      Overall i feel I have the watch a fair review, confirming frustrations that I found that no one seemed to mention, and highlighting the positives too for this who want a good value watch that can provide in depth shout data

      Thanks for watching! I take your point on board, but I don't think I'm wrong. I have other golf watches that will calculate the stableford score for me, and at my club, that's the main type of game plated in the weekly/monthly competitions.

    I've got Arccos and it misses between 10 and 20 shots a round and is terrible to edit so this sounds a bit less frustrating and includes a watch and no annual subscription as well. All golf tags are definitely a work in progress and far from perfect but a watch is at least nearer the club than a phone in your pocket.

    Ive watched all your golf gps videos now. I’m big on tracking stats, so I love to see my hdcp, putts, gir, and even tee distances. Which gps watch would you recommend for these main features if money wasn’t an object?

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад +1

      If money isn’t an object, I’d say the Garmin S62 with the CT10 tags (to be clear I’ve not tried the tags myself yet) - it will track all of the above for you. I believe the Shotscope V3 will provide some additional stat comparison info, but the Garmin S62 is a far better gps watch….it is expensive, but you said money no object 😎
      That said, if you’re not bothered about the extra features you get with the Garmin, and are happy with the look of this, the Shotscope V3 will give the stats you want and more for half the price.

    I’m a massive SS fan. When missing shots did you check that the club you’re using shows on the watch? When losing a ball are you marking this on the watch while on course? It’s an option. It’s not advertising as doing stableford (not staple) yet.

    • @GolfGuyReviews
      @GolfGuyReviews  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching. I'm a fan of the data and the concept, I just feel it's not as straight forward as people may like/think it is.
      After I got used to it, I would remember to check the club I was using had been picked up by the watch. But I would find it would miss some when taking multiple shots with the same club.
      When testing I saw there was an option to mark a lost ball, but because you can't check your score mid-round, I don't think there's a way to know it has has worked correctly, until you check every shot you hit after the round.
      Looking forward to testing the new H4 and rangefinder combination to see if there's been any significant changes to the firmware.

    I only spent £129.99 on it as a deal and I feel let down. The amount of editing after each round, always misses between 5 being the best case and 13 shots being the worst case. And then it moves on to different holes when I am still putting and my last round I left 2 putts short but according to the app I left 69% of them short that round. But there isn’t anything else that price range so I deal with I guess. Hope that can make improvements

    Great review, given me a lot to think about as I’m keen to start tracking distances and get stokes gained. Tempted to get this or maybe the new H4, have you done a review on this one? What happens if you hole out a chip? It doesn’t happen that often but is it a simple process to pin collect with zero putts. Thanks

      Thanks for watching Oliver! Im currently testing the H4, I have 3 9 hole rounds under my belt so far but want to use it a bit more before filming my review.
      The functionality between the watch and H4 is identical, so at the moment my preference would be to go for the watch - it feels much more intuitive than having the H4 clipped on my belt or bag (my affiliate links are in the description 😎)
      If you hole out then you don’t record anything, and the unit will just move on to the next hole assuming you chipped in. If you want to move the flag to the exact location for accuracy you’ll have to do it when you edit the round after.

      Thanks for watching and sharing. You make a very good point about subscription, one I hadn’t considered at the time of filming.
      I think the experience of missing shots can vary, as I know plenty of people who have no issue, as well as others who returned or sold the watch as they were fed up with it missing so many shots. At the time of filming I hadn’t realised the tags activate when in close proximity to the watch, I think shot scope could have been clearer with that. At the time that just said to take a few practice swings, so I assumed the rages activated with movement. Now I just make sure I hold the tags close to the watch and it always picks it up for me…so long as I remember to do that

    The watch band ist enerving, it often unlocks and irritates. but thats not the worst. I was on holliday in France and from 5 places played, there were 3 with inaccurate data, even if i updated them the day before (wrong pars and fairway layout) And back in Germany there are often winter greens or even winter tees in effect. Thats something the watch cant handle. It places then a drive from the normal teebox to the place you were hitting your first shot.... Nice for the statistics if a par 4 was changed into a par 3. On the plus side the GPS is way more accurate than that of my (older) Garmin watch -but if the course data is inaccurate then this doesnt help either...
