Though I like and enjoy Herb, I think this format for guests where Dave is doing the interview alone works so much better.

as a 68 year old, i've experienced all the main types/styles of recording. from live, no click, to modern registration with everything under the microscope. nothing will work unless the vox/melody is in spirit. j.

Just cut the first three songs on my first album. This was a big help in setting up for recording. Not caring so much about the mic bleed if you keep the feel/energy high. Thank you to Pensado´s and Dave Cobb.

Of course, he's got the brain of a drummer / producer (he understands mixing rhythm patterns). I like it when he says, mix the drums, buss / print it in stereo and forget about it. So true!
also, Musician Mixers tend to mix according to their instrument, Guitars/Keys/Drums heavy but Vocal is King! He likes to mix vocals first and not last. I agree as long as the song balance doesn't sound too whimpy.
Great Episode, Always learning new stuff, Thanks.

the part about a willingness to commit is so awesome. like Cobb said about something else in the interview, hearing that validated the way that i (try to) approach recording

I’m just in the middle finding out what albums he’s responsible for. The list goes on and on and they’re all great! Just awesome!
Am I right? He’s having the band play so quietly that you can hear the singer without headphones????

Great stuff, real folks having a real conversation.
My studio is actually next door to the city dump.
I can always tell the “real musicians“ because they say ‘cool’. Some people are like ‘what about bleed over’,
    I’m like “what’s bleed”?
We too strive to have a great vibe; it’s all about fun, no time limit, great results !!! 😁😁😁😁

Fiddlin' John Carson (not the guy from The Tonight Show) is the name Dave Cobb was looking for as the first country record. (But I think Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family were before that, though?) He was heard on WSB two years before a fiddler kicked off the Grand Ole Opry on WSM.

so, he produced "the joke" by Brandi Carlile, simply perfection... in her Grammy speech she said that Dave Cobb wrote the song, but internet said she wrote it, so wtf? just want to know who wrote the lyrics...😌
