    That's an unfortunate experience. Your frustration is 100% justified. Experiences like this is why I took matters in my own hands and found your channel. There is no price to all the information I have learned from you. I hope all dealers and repair shops watch this video and take a thing or two from it. Great video Eric.

      Always confirm the complaint or concern about a car. If you can't, you can't expect to fix it. Better to ship it out than to charge on a guess. If you do get to the repairing point, then confirm the repair. If you were wrong. Own it.
      That's how the best shops I've worked for run. From big chains to family owned single shop businesses. I've seen hiring managers and I could feel they weren't this kind of person, so I've never had to work at a place that was different than the first paragraph.
      Do mistakes happen? Does a car act okay on the confirmation and act up later? Sure. But these concepts take care of most of it. Pearl. This thorough comment was inspired by you.

    That's the number one reason I started doing my own work on my vehicles. In my experience when I take my car in to a shop, 50% of the time (not exaggerating, I tracked it over the last 3 years) they do something wrong or try to sell me something I don't need. Thanks for all that you do, Eric! You're making mechanics out of DIYers like me.

    Welcome to the world of "parts cannon" mechanics. This is exactly why we watch SMA and ETCG. I used to love taking my car to the dealership because they had the best trained techs for my car. Now with greed, flat rate, and cost overheads I want NOTHING to do facilities like that anymore. Great video.

To date, I can't count how many oil changes and brake pads and rotors I've changed, 1 brake caliper, 1 starter, 1 ignition switch, all kinds of sensors, all the other fluids, filters, spark plugs...can you imagine what the dealer would have charged, plus all the imagined fixes they probably would have thought up? Maybe so .. but a complaint directly to HONDA about the dealership... not to the dealership .. especially with the off camera backing of Eric with his "reputation" and the potential bad press they could get, would have a lot of weight. and it wouldn't be about the money .. it would be about enacting a change in that dealership for the benefit of others too ...

    • @pccchurch
      @pccchurch 7 лет назад +2

      It is a culture that creates bad customer experience. Most likely the diag tech was rushed to diag and was waaay over his head. The service manager wanted good weekly production numbers and pushed for fast work. The service writer didn't feel obligated to honestly refund the money due to greed and wanting to maintain service sales numbers.
      Such bad business practices happen in medical clinics, vet offices, and dealership/independent shops. Lets just be real about it and dont pretend it's only at dealerships.
      Honest mistakes happen but when it happens 3+ times in a row, that is an absolute failure. Heads must roll. Top on down. If not, then it will continue.
      I know highly crooked service writers that pretend to be honest when they become a midlevel manager and yet push for numbers on techs that can only result in bad customer surveys. These "metrics" managers also love new hot shot techs that have great flag hours ... but in reality sux in comeback rates and sux in diag.
      These hotshot techs get a fast rep in the shop of being shady scammers and some are forced to leave.
      If u want a job done right, ask for a senior master diagnostic tech that isn't pressured to rush the diag and will actually duplicate problem and confirm the repair afterwards.

Stupid stealerships need to lose their shops. This was an easy diagnose, I call this one out 9.9 times out of 10 just hearing someone talking about it. Surely an entire team of mechanics should have got that one.
      I've got fired for not doing the job the way they wanted in many places. Bad QA, underhanded practices, dishonest shit. BFG go find another job where the guy running it is not an con artist asshole.

    A Ford dealership did this to my mom! Her Ford EXP would die after it warmed up, leaving her stranded on the side of the road until it cooled down. I don't even know how many trips she made back to the dealership or how much she paid for parts and labor. Time after time, the issue wasn't fixed. It turned out to be a push rod for the mechanical fuel pump that was worn down shorter. A stupid inexpensive, easy to replace part, cost her a crap load of time, money, and inconvenience!!!! :(

    Man, that blows. This is why I will go out of my way to take my car to my mechanic I trust even when I wasn't living back at home. It's hard to find trustworthy people anymore that take pride in their work and do it right the first time, and if not, own up to their mistake and fix it, like you said.
    Also since I work really close to your shop I have a pretty good idea which dealership that is. Almost bought a car there a few years ago but glad I didn't; who knows what they would have checked off as a passable used car. Employing quality technicians sounds like an ongoing issue with them. I hope she can get out of paying that bill for that b.s. "repair".

    • @IstasPumaNevada
      @IstasPumaNevada 7 лет назад +2

      If you do that, do an image search for your particular model's parts ahead of time. It won't stop them from pulling out a bad part they just have sitting there and saying it was yours, but at least they won't be able to do it from any random make and model.

    • @IIGrayfoxII
      @IIGrayfoxII 7 лет назад +2

      Even if 1/100000 dealerships do this, asking for parts doesnt cost them or you anything esp if it is an expensive repair, asking for parts is insurance on your behalf that the word they said needed doing was done.

    I exactly know what you mean Eric! Thanks for sharing! I took my car to a dealership and they mentioned to me that my brake rotors need to change because they have rust on the edges. They wanted to charge me CDN $550 to change the front rotors and pads, and CDN $600 to change the rear. I was scratching my head when they said that because the brakes were fine and the steering wheel wasn't shaking when I brake. Luckily I have a friend who is a mechanic and asked him to inspect it and to get a second opinion. He said the rotors and pads were fine and plenty of life left. Since then, I stopped going to the dealership and take my car to my friend for services. He is transparent, honest and reliable, which he reminds me of you Eric. Downside, having friends and family, having to deal with their cars too, at the start it was ok, sometimes...it feels like it's a full time job. I gotta put this one on the tech. I'm sure the service manager looked up the time on this job and thought it was a great idea but the tech. recommended it. A lot of service managers don't actually know the technical side of things and the ones that do haven't wrenched in 20 years.

    • @ETCG1
      @ETCG1  7 лет назад +3

      I agree to a point, but I worked flat rate and managed to repair vehicles properly. You just have to be committed to the job and not the money.

    • @MissionFreiheit
      @MissionFreiheit 6 лет назад +1

      Here in Germany there's no such thing as flat rates in auto repair but at the dealership the techs might get a percentage on top of their wage. It's not as extreme as in the US where it seems to me that dealerships just try to scam people out of their money. But still if you want quality work you go to the smaller independent shops because they still care about the customer and their reputation. Or you do it yourself. That might be the best option in any case ;)

    Eric, been a sub of you for a really long time..in fact your old videos helped me learn so much on mechanics I became a mechanic. I recently got burned for the second time at a local dealer on the service end. I was an apprentice tech for Chrysler...RECALL central. I loved it, got paid hourly to learn and improve my skills. Months go by and I still love it; did some work on my own; then last Tuesday the service director (awesome dude) pulled me in his office and the look on his face I knew something bad was about to take place. He had told me upper management made the decision to let me go. Claiming I was struggling to do the job and had talked to other tech's of senior status and they too agreed and they collectively concluded I had to be cut. This was the second time I was let go by a dealership. So honestly I think independent is the way to go. I have a shop that is looking for someone like me, Learning everything they want to teach me. I have a start though; about to be ASE certified in brakes. Took the test almost a couple years ago and passed. Just hearing your story about her dealer experiance I too was scratching my head and was thinking like you...Cam's won't cause a slow start issue at all; did they ever think to do a voltage drop test???? If it's cranking slow, that tells me it could be a battery issue, not a fucking mechanical issue unless the starter is starting to go out. Fuck the flat rate thinking; do your damn job diag the issue and fix it right the first time, not on the 4th TIME!!!

  • @VaderYouSeekVader
    @VaderYouSeekVader 7 лет назад +3

      If it has a short in the windings or bad bushing/bearing it could be drawing an excessive amount of current but still work. If the battery is marginal it becomes too low on charge and the voltage drops below what the computer is happy with. Unhappy ECU and then problems running. When the alternator tops off the battery the problem would go away. That's about the only way they can be related. The slow cranking tells us there's low voltage for some reason.

    Yes, but Eric, please, if they had done it the RIGHT way they would have missed out on 3000 plus bucks in the coffer. C'mon Eric, sharpen up !
    My experience is that dealers only want to service cars, change the oil with the cheapest nastiest oil and filter they can get they can get and, in Australia at least, charge 3-400 bucks to do it--easy money.
    When my A/C wasn't cooling the dealer wanted 2k to rip out the entire dash and change the evaporator but no guarantee it was the evaporator causing the problem.
    Whether that was or wasn't the problem, they were going to charge me 2k regardless, then keep charging till they find the problem. No thanks. I think the strategy was to scare me away because they didn't really want to work on the car but if I insisted they'd make a killing.
    Either way, a win-win for them and a lose-lose for me.
    Fixed it myself and only cost me a cheap camera to locate the problem.
    Shame you can't mention them though anyone who lives in your area watching this knows who you're talking about.

    First of all thanks a lot Eric for you videos. What do you describe is a very regular problem with a lot of dealerships or workshops. Is really a shame this is happening because i know mechanics don't earn to much money when they fix cars. My dad used to work as a mechanic and for his experience i know a lot of stories about angry customers at the moment he told them about any problem. All this angry is because stories like the one you just told us. I fix my own car, and a lot of times i consult your videos or my dealership manual that i bought online. Yesterday i fix my long crank problem, very similar to your story. Was the camshaft sensor on my distributor. I pull the code out of my ECU and run to my manual. Pretty simple and straight. New lower distributor part replaced. Why dealerships cannot do this? What a great coincidence your video today. Thanks for all. Greetings from Miami.

    Not trying to be a dick or anything but as a Honda tech, dealer was probably chasing ckp sensor code. These engines that run 0-20 oil have pitted cams a lot. We replace them on accords and pilots all the time. These cars burn oil, stretch timing chains all the time, pit cams, and throw the code. Ive had a couple of times where aftermarket starters have thrown the ckp code and cause hesitation. I bet she had a aftermarket started on there. Pitted cams needreplaced anyways. Typically never any issues other than a knock. They make a hell of a knock. Those accords burn oil from stuck rings and get run low on oil all the time. Chain starves for oil, cams get no oil. Service bulletin on it for pistons. Also, Honda doesn’t have that tester...atleast mine doesn’t. We have a battery tester only and if the customer wants to have a gr8 ran, it’s a half hour. Gr8 will do what your tester will do and a little more. Once again, not being a dick but just thought you should know that. Honda tech still should’ve known cams wouldn’t have fixed it and ckp wouldn’t have fixed it. Never seen either cause problems. If you get a ckp code, it’s either starter or timing. Timing usually throws cps code though.

    • @ETCG1
      @ETCG1  7 лет назад +62

      Actually, I'm happy you weighed in. As I said at the beginning of the video, I was getting my information 3rd, or even 4th hand if you count the service writer. I guess my point is that after all this time and money I would think it would have been fixed. Instead she had to go back 3 times. As a Honda tech, you know that 'fixed right the first time' is the mantra. The fact that they didn't follow that, and seemed to give her the run around is what I'm so upset about.
      Also, .5 for running that test seems a bit excessive. If I were the service manager, I'd insist on running that test on EVERY performance problem and included in diagnostic time. Low, or inconsistent voltage causes so many issues in modern vehicles and should be step one in my opinion.
      Thank you very much for your input. In fact, I'm going to move your comment up in the cue so that others can see another point of view.

    • @Dumbass_mechanic
      @Dumbass_mechanic 7 лет назад +19

      But.... the customer didn't bring the car in for a cam code, she brought it in for a slow crank. Basic auto repair tells you cranking has to do with starter or battery, perhaps you should test the battery and the starter. Neither the starter nor the battery will set a code, but the first thing the tech did was plug in a scanner and start chasing codes, thousands of cp dollars later the original problem was still never addressed, and it took a call to a techline and 3 visits to figure out there was a bad starter.

    • @frdbtr
      @frdbtr 7 лет назад +9

      The K24 motors do have an issue with camshafts but there is no evidence that these actually needed replacing. If a technician told me I had "pitted camshafts" and they needed replaced for $3000 I would ask to see the camshafts and then make the decision on whether I wanted the work done or not.

    Well said!!! I remember taking my husband's 02' Ranger to a shop for rear axle seals and when I left with it I was told "the new seals will leak a bit at first but should STOP after a few miles", I believed the mechanic and left... to my dismay my husband & I had to do them all over as they ripped one of the new seals. He's very mechanically inclined but I thought I would do something nice to help him, however it only cost us more money. Now to do something nice I just buy him tools & we enjoy working on our vehicles together! I've learned a lot from him, ball joints, struts, wiring diagrams, brakes, etc. And I LOVE it all, we'll except for body work... lol
