3:29 that’s what i suggested after you left the second shop. purchase 2 acres of land, and put a 6 car prefabricated steel garage there. it’ll be a massive downsize from your old big shop, but it’ll be a place to call home. BTW i got a honda element man, and i’m PISSED 😠 pissed off i didn’t buy one of these sooner! i’m currently restoring it. will post a lot of videos of it

I'm glad you're back! I bought my first car in 2014 and it had lots of problems (Honda CRV 1998) and I didn't have money to fix everything, so your videos helped me start my automotive DIY "career" I basically restored that car in two years, thanks to your videos. I remember your video on "timing marks not line up perfectly" or something like that, as I was doing timing belt on my car and had this issue and it saved me from going crazy because it never lined up, until I did a lot of rotations. Today I can fix everything, work on lots of hybrids and EV, still as a hobby as I work as a nurse for my main job, but your videos was the start of my passion for cars, thank you.
Hi Eric! Thanks for posting again, good to have you back. I am curious about the economics of stopping a channel like yours. Presumably the views went down and the money as well, but not to zero so there is some “passive income” in there. I have closed down a very small and humble channel but I still get some beer money ever couple of months. Does the “runoff” stay constant or you need to “keep feeding the machine” so to speak…. Maybe a topic for an etcg1 episode
If you don't feed the machine, the algorithm will boot you for the next video and your views will eventually dwindle to nothing. YT will milk you for all they can first.
I've been watching your videos since the very beginning and will be in the future, too. Thank you for the update, I hope you'll find your dream production setup soon.
What went missing from the 'custom builds' was the fact that I tried to put in automotive systems and design. That seemed to go over the viewers heads. I've found that after building a couple of cars I have a much better understanding of how to fix them. My hope was to pass that onto the audience. Thanks for the comment.
You made the right choice in not buying that old shop. I did some looking and a place like that should have been around $650K~$700K. I think you were in a case of "I'll sell, how desperate are you to buy". We have several of those in my area where people want 10 times what the market will bear, because they really don't want to sell it, but hey...somebody walk in and really want it, yea, they'd be foolish to not take that. That all said, good luck on the moving forward!!
Creek behind your property is all kinds of liability too, you risk getting a letter 20 years later saying you’re partially responsible for cleaning up 20 years of spills/leaks that’s now designated as a superfund site.
Thanks for your videos, I remember back in the day, watching one video for I repair that I needed to learn, when I finished the repair, it felt like "I made fire!" situation. For me there was something magic about those videos, it open the box of mystery and simplified and encourage me, a regular guy, with no automotive repair experience. I watched that video and stayed for the fun. There is something to say about the flavor of videos that are not 'professionally' edited. Again thanks, I wish you the best.
Glad to see your coming back the car community needs you . Too many people on RUclips talking your a type of person and thats doing hands on work and what makes your videos stand out
Been following you and getting advice since that cold, darkish, see your breath shop in your early videos. Visualizing an epic comeback for you brother!
I had to go back through my history to see when I first started watching your videos. It said 2018! But I think it’s been longer. Anyway, your the reason I’m a DIY mechanic now and I want to thank you. Your the reason I have not only the confidence to fix our vehicles but also work on other things like lawn equipment or house repairs. Totally understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. You’re awesome Eric!
I work on a video production team in Minneapolis which is talent rich for production… we use editors who live hours away. We transfer the videos on to an external SSD. We then FedEx the SSD hard drives to the editors. Good editors are hard to find… Another tip I learned while producing a video for GoPro a few weeks back - in the Quik App you can highlight clips. There is a simple button in the app that will digitally favorite a video for reference for easy search and find in editing later. I did a series of videos on the recently released GoPro Hero and the GoPro Hero 13 Black (with magnetic latch mount and you can swap lenses).
I almost had that deal set up about 5 years ago with a guy in New Orleans, then he got a job with a TV production company and couldn't follow through. Thanks for the comment.
A production team sounds great! I imagine there's some spontaneity that is lost when you have to pull a bunch of people together instead of "I have an idea and I'm going to film it now" but if that ever strikes you, you've clearly got the skills to make that happen, too, so a property with a back yard shop/studio does seem like the way to go. Best of luck to you!
Like 12 years ago I got a junk Civic, it was all I could afford. Everything went on it. But Eric has how to replace like everything on a 90s Honda with extra amounts of rust. I went from not being able to change a radiator hose to doing my own suspension and timing belt and stuff. My entire mechanical education is Eric. I can pinpoint shit wrong with mine or friend's cars with sounds Eric has explained over a variety of videos. I definitely never learned more from someone I never met lol. But thank you dude. I really appreciate what you do.
You've been around long enough and have legions of fans (me included) that you are right to pick and choose the right path forward. No need to settle for something that isn't the right fit. We miss you out here but we know now that you'll be back. Best of luck Eric !
I met you in 2019 at SEMA, and thanked you personally for helping me with your videos. It was a pleasure meeting you and can;t wait for the great content to return!
You helped me so much over the years, I use to watch you all the time, I hope you come back in full force and continue helping others like you helped me!.. Thank You!
hey Eric, I seem to be finding myself getting into auto repair quite by accident. I've repaired and refitted the rear bumper to my mom's '05 Honda Civic in the last week and am about to attempt replacing the radiator! Wish me luck!
Glad to have you back. I would invest in young kids who love video production but just need experience. That way you teach them the way you want it and they will do it. Labor is cheaper because they’re inexperienced, and they gain experience and knowledge by you teaching them.
A great auto mechanic like you doesn't need a great location, people will find you. I know of a few that are actually located out of the big cities and do quite well, IE Pudding's Fab Shop ?
Yeah, just to repeat what others said about that prior property, not only should you NOT have purchased it, but it sounds like you should've RAN from it. But with your knowledge, experience, and network, to say nothing about your notoriety, I'd hate to think that you'll have problems finding something. Just so you know, Terre Haute, Indiana has some choice locations worth setting a shop up at. In fact, I know of a place in Brazil, Indiana that's right by a Kroger's that would be PRIME for a man of your stature... ;.) Just keep doing you, man. You owe nothing to anyone and once you get this all figured out, you'll be enjoying the new lease you'll have on life. Sounds like you're just in an overall better headspace. Good for you.
I’m glad you have made some videos with TRQ. I’ve enjoyed your banter with Sue and others. I’m sad that some Element parts seem to have been dropped from their website. I won’t part with my Element until I have to tow it away, so I’ll need repair parts to keep it going. 🙂
Appreciate the update! About to do a job for the second time (many years later) that you taught me how to do the first time, been watching you that long!
I'd sit pretty for a little and see what the new administration does for interest rates. Maybe do some intermediate videos with TRQ or whoever and if it gets better economically, move somewhere and get exactly what you're looking for. Something down south would probably be a lot more affordable.
I was sure hoping you could have found a property with a nice pole barn or found the right place to have built yourself one. Oh well things sometimes happen for a reason. Good to see that you haven't given up.
if that's the right video to pay tribute - I'm grateful for the content you shared so many years. And you may remember that I was a guy born and grown in Russia, I had '98 Honda Domain (basically Civic) back in the day that I worked on for years. Parts replacement, A/C system complete replacement (dead pump from previous owners led to the whole system loss), some tune-up, scanners etc. But now I live in California, drive 2019 Passport Touring (and it's a decent SUV, I strongly recommend), living my best life ever. Partially thanks to you, to the life simplicity and wisdom you shared directly and indirectly, and to the way you use American English to express your thoughts 😄.
Been following you since you were at your original shop. I loved those videos because it seemed approachable and like something that I could do. Especially when thing's don't go as planned because it shows me how to handle those situations. I say go back to your roots and find a way to make good quality videos that aren't overly produced etc. Maybe find a good middle ground. Looking forward to your big comeback!
1 good editor and a camera guy is huge. Theres alot of other automobiles channels that do exactly that 3 people can run a fairly large channel. Especially when the editor can produce the videos you want.
Glad to see you’re dipping your toes back into the space. I always enjoyed your content from maintenance to the Fairlane and the Fixing it Forward episodes. I’m also a big fan of RockAuto and have the magnets on display in the garage to prove it. Looking forward to see where you land with this. If you do develop a partnership, I have an FJ Cruiser with 207k miles in Indiana that’s due for some new shocks & struts! 😂 Welcome back Eric! 👍
It's so good to see you back, Eric, I owe so much of my career, reputation for pride of workmanship, and even my tiny little RUclips channel to your efforts, I have been watching since the first shop and learned so much from you! I owe you a beer for sure! Wish I was able to help out in some way, but I'm not sure my crappy little rig would be of much use... All the best of luck man, Stay Dirty!
There is a shop for sale here in NW Illinois 3bay comes with equipment Im sure much less than1.3 mil and we are short on mechanics in town. Newer building renting is possible.
You’re right about the current prices and interest rates. Hopefully in the next year or so the economy will recover, inflation and interest rates will come down and you can buy a house with a shop or with land that you can build a shop on. I think that would be your best option. Now to be able to do that and to get a production crew takes money. So I know you are starting to make some ETCG1 videos. Keep that up. Suck it up and make some Eric the car guy videos in some way or another or make videos somehow for the next year so you can put yourself financially in a position to really be where you want/need to be. Good luck in your future.
You have been a great help to me and I appreciate the time, effort and dedication it takes to create the content you share! The TRQ team makes great content too and it is nice to see videos of you with their outfit also! Keep up the great work and I look forward continuing to follow the next phase of your evolution!
Hey Eric, just wanted to say thank you for all the knowledge you've imparted on me over the years. I've been watching since the beginning and I've come from knowing almost nothing about working on cars to today where I've just completely rebuilt an LS motor and swapped it into my old Nissan. And a lot of that inspiration came from your Fairmont videos. I hope you land somewhere great, keep it up. Guys like me appreciate what you do.
Always a pleasure to see and hear you Eric!! I have been a follower of yours for many years and plan on continuing wherever you end up. The main thing is YOU Eric!! Follow your dreams and sooner or later, you will realize your dream to become a reality. This video was uplifting and in true Eric fashion, to the point. Your head and heart have to be in sync and lead you to your true calling. I wish you and your family only the very best of life, health and good fortune!!! You have helped so many and it ha been long over due to help Eric!!! You have the support of your followers and your family!! Onward and Upward for Mr. Eric!!!!
I’ve followed you since the begging, started watching you because I started working on my own cars to save money, you saved me thousands in shop fees. I am a loyal viewer to all channels I’m subbed. Glad your making a comeback, and I get it some times it’s hard to carry on due economy etc.. ✌️🇨🇦🤘🤘
The close to burn-out gave you plenty time to overthink what your future could look like and how to give it the right form. I really hope you'll find a way to move forward with a new shop and a very helpfull team!
Nngh... yeah, wow, definitely a good move to pass on buying that place. Looking very forward to seeing what you end up doing if you get the right place and crew, but at the same time - no pressure man. Taking this relaxed approach to figure it out and do it on _your_ terms is great.
Thanks for the video Eric ! As someone who has invested in real estate for over 40 years I think your assessment of your former shop property was remarkably well-reasoned and accurate. The shop property doesn't appear to have been a particularly attractive investment opportunity on it's own merit. The shop property also does not appear to have been critical to continuing to run your RUclips business. Without knowing any more than what was described I seriously doubt I would have bought it either. Best wishes & good luck !!!
Thanks to you and the many other youtubers I have rebuilt my first engine in my 50's. Thanks for all your work so far and can't wait to see more. My possible next project is a Honda Element. I know about the rear axle mount. 😀
Hell yeah Eric! I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again you’ve helped me big time you are one of the main automotive teachers I’ve had, I did go to automotive school for a year in 2019-2020 which was crazy with Covid but I’ve been a viewer since long before that, I’m going to be 26 on 12/01 and I’ve probably been watching since at least 14. I look forward to your return, take the time you need to do it right I know it’s strategic. The same methods you’ve taught for diagnosing and what not has helped me as I’ve gotten into mobile auto repair a few years ago, explaining repairs and other auto stuff which can be difficult has been easier since watching your content, also I started a few months ago as a maintenance technician in essentially a giant machine shop which CNC machine turbine blades for power generators - the automotive experience and knowledge has helped massively with diagnosing and repairing at work too.
I’ve always liked your no nonsense honest approach to repairs but most importantly your attitude ,it just makes a world of difference. The very best of luck moving forward with your ventures.
$1.2M is way overpriced for 3K sq ft. That's 400 per sq ft. This was during the height of the real estate bubble. Prices have moderated somewhat since then.
I’ve been watching you since you moved into that shop. You’ve helped me a lot over the years. I’ve noticed that you sometimes work at home on small projects, maybe do some of those videos. They don’t have to be a full production just getting us back in the garage with you.
try asking banks if they have any commercial shops in their portfolio, try asking a Realtor who has access to the MLS for the same...other options while you were gone sitting idle did you or could you have lease out some of your equipment during your time off instead of putting it in storage? Good thing you were doing your homework before attempting to purchase! Most home buyers don't do that and rely on the Realtor info for that! They come to find out there is an airport next door "that makes too much noise" or "there is a volunteer fire house down the street that trips their roof siren every time they get a fire call"...
Glad to see you're working your way back, Eric. Love all your content, but especially the Element stuff as I own two of those. Hoping to make it to Elements on the Dragon 2025! Go Steelers!
As an upcoming Honda Technician I really appreciate your videos on Hondas they have been extremely helpful and informative I like how you explain things better than most
Brother, i know a guy from Canada that is in the same situation as your. Engine builder. Lost the shop where he built. Now he's in his garage. Same problem. He's still building engines but he's paying to get some machine work done he used to do. Some nice engines tho.
Seems like having your own metal building would be the way to go. Doesn’t have to be crazy huge or fancy. Two car shop kinda deal, just to have something.

I have no inspiration on how to solve the current dilemma(s), except to say, I’ll be here waiting for the eventual solutioning….
You've been around long enough and have legions of fans (me included) that you are right to pick and choose the right path forward. No need to settle for something that isn't the right fit. We miss you out here but we know now that you'll be back. Best of luck Eric !
ETCG1!!! you've been missed!
I met you in 2019 at SEMA, and thanked you personally for helping me with your videos. It was a pleasure meeting you and can;t wait for the great content to return!
By far, you are my favorite RUclips mchanic. By far.
Your a great dude, glad to see the possibility of you coming back!
I will support you till the end!
It can be a lucrative career if you're willing to spend a good chunk of your income on tools. You'll never look for work though.
Glad you are still around.. Thank you for the updates
I’ve been a follower for years. Looking forward to your progress!
Glad to have you back. I would invest in young kids who love video production but just need experience. That way you teach them the way you want it and they will do it. Labor is cheaper because they’re inexperienced, and they gain experience and knowledge by you teaching them.
Yeah - good editing that is cost effective is hard to find!
In fact, I know of a place in Brazil, Indiana that's right by a Kroger's that would be PRIME for a man of your stature...
;.)
Just keep doing you, man. You owe nothing to anyone and once you get this all figured out, you'll be enjoying the new lease you'll have on life. Sounds like you're just in an overall better headspace. Good for you.
I've missed the digital confections 😊
Glad to see you making videos again.
So glad you are working toward a better future. you are the GOAT as far as I am concerned.
I'm excited to see you back Eric!!
Been watching the videos since day one. Thank you for everything and look forward to you continuing helping us out
I’m glad you have made some videos with TRQ.
Because of you, I’m a better technician today. Thank you Eric!
I'd sit pretty for a little and see what the new administration does for interest rates. Maybe do some intermediate videos with TRQ or whoever and if it gets better economically, move somewhere and get exactly what you're looking for. Something down south would probably be a lot more affordable.
Good plan. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for helping me with my Accord and Odyssey over the years!
❤ Happy holidays👍👍
Eric I wish you the very best going forward watching from South Africa
Erick i Start waching your videos since u have a pony tale until now And i can't belive that i'm a mechanic And youtuber too thanks
Great to see you back, looking forward to more ETCG videos. Your knowledge has helped me save money and expand my car horizons. Thank you Eric!
Yep, for years I looked for that very thing and all I found was a good cameraman.
Hat Faux Pas - lol. Glad to see you making content again!
The thought counts. Thank you!
Glad you are back. We wish you GOOD LUCK and Hope to hear more, TRQ sounds like a good possible fit. Joanne & Evan
Ive been watching you videos since high school autos class, my autos teacher used to show your videos. 2015-2016
Thanks to you and the many other youtubers I have rebuilt my first engine in my 50's. Thanks for all your work so far and can't wait to see more. My possible next project is a Honda Element. I know about the rear axle mount. 😀
If you decide to go the Element rout. ruclips.net/video/-2i-lhxkIF8/видео.html
2:20 good choice, flood zone and brown zone are red flags
I’ve always liked your no nonsense honest approach to repairs but most importantly your attitude ,it just makes a world of difference.
The very best of luck moving forward with your ventures.
$1.2M is way overpriced for 3K sq ft. That's 400 per sq ft. This was during the height of the real estate bubble. Prices have moderated somewhat since then.
Doesn't matter, the douchebag next door bought the building and it's his now
@ETCG1 Yes, I watched the video. And yes, he was, and probably still is, a jerk.
I know ALL of the available properties between Cincinnati, Dayton, and Columbus,. The issue is the financing to buy or rent them.
DexCool. Coolant.
I hate it.
Great to see you pop up again.
Seems like having your own metal building would be the way to go. Doesn’t have to be crazy huge or fancy. Two car shop kinda deal, just to have something.
You post it. We watch. Thanks for helping us out.
