      With something like that Quilt Purple top, the left side is the bottom of the right side, so the wood grain/quilt reflects the light in opposite directions.
      That will typically change the brightness and sometimes the hue even though it is the same color, the light is reflecting in the opposite direction as its mate piece (bookmatched) on the opposite side. You really should take a tour of Gibson and film it, I believe it would give you a lot of insight.

      Speaking of Koa tops I saw either on Sweetwater or Musician's Friend that there's an Epiphone now being sold with a Koa top for around $800 or $900. Did not look to bad. I think I'm on board with you on the factory burst. Although them Koa tops aren't bad looking either.

    Hey Trogly, just pointing out, that heartwood is still curly maple, it’s a maple top. All trees have sapwood and heartwood, and with most trees the heartwood is the sought after part, walnut heartwood is that pretty brown, where the sapwood is a lighter color. Maple is unusual where it’s the light colored sapwood that’s generally sought after while the darker heartwood isn’t. I work in a shop that deals almost exclusively with Birdseye and Curly maple. Our instrument clients buy exclusively white meat sapwood, which I always find kind of a shame cause I love the look of the darker heartwood, which also is often very heavily figured. That being said, maple heartwood is a lot less stable and if cracks develop in a board odds are it’s going to be in the heartwood.

      Is it just me or does the guy who does these videos mostly cares of the aesthetics of the guitar for dollar resale value over actual playability of the damn thing? I've seen other videos and it seems playability is not his main point of interest, seems to me he cares more how it looks, I find that a bit odd.

      @Myke Fuller Do you mean in regards to guitars or in regards to wood? Generally yes there will be a price difference, it all depends on what’s considered desirable out of a given species of tree and the quality of wood harvested in it. To use the example again of walnut, where the heartwood is sought after, a piece that’s pure, clean heartwood is going to fetch more than a piece that has areas of sapwood mixed in, or knots, or twisted grain etc. lots of factors contributing to that. The area I work in, figured maple, has all those factors and then the quality of figure to consider as well.

    (1:52) This Custom IS a maple topped guitar. The term “heartwood” refers to the inner wood of the tree, where the wood is hardest. The layers of the tree are: bark, sapwood, and heartwood (concentrically). There is a mild to strong color difference between sapwood and heartwood.

    When I see nice grain finishes all I think about is PRS. Les Paul Customs look so good in a strong wood grain finish but they’re always painted over which isn’t always a bad thing but I prefer the natural grain look. I always enjoy seeing these types of Les Pauls (minus the tie-die) but I just can’t bring myself to spend 5k on a guitar and it not be a PRS anymore, 10 years ago I’d be buying one of these, now days I’ll just appreciate from afar.

    The ''Heartwood'' custom is still a Maple top, it just includes heartwood, which is the inner wood that is darker compared to the sapwood. Dark Walnut is also heartwood where the sapwood from Walnut is very light in colour.

  • @maon7565
    @maon7565 2 года назад +2

    Mr. Trogly, the term "heartwood" refers to where in the tree the wood was cut from, not it's type. Still maple (probably), just cut from the very center of the log.

    G'day Trogly, looked at many of your presentation's. Your preoccupation with LPs is amusing and a little bit scary, don't change a thing. The exuberence you show in all your segment's is refreshing and, I think, welcome. This is particularly noticable in this offering. My only claim to guitar notoriety was the ownership of a 68 tustom tele I bought in 1976 (complete with 60w Right amplifier) for $160 and sold on in 1990 for $900. I still think about wrist slashing everytime I remember this. Your format is good and I wish you success in the future. Cheer's from Australia. P.S I fallowed the fate of my teli, it ending up back in the USA. It sold for a lot of money.

    Love your videos. When I am in need of Les Paul porn fix, I go to this channel. You have shown some amazing Les Pauls. How ever, $8k is a bit too deep for my pockets. A few years ago I picked up a used Les Paul that caught my eye. As soon as I grabbed it, I knew it was a keeper. My guess is that someone bought it with the intention of learning how to play. The guitar looked brand new and even the case lock was still set to all zeros. So, for $599 I grabbed a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded T. My Fender Stratocaster is now my backup. So, for those Troglidites drooling for a Gibson Les Paul, there are affordable Les Pauls out there, with Burstbucker Pros and old school wiring. A Faded T may not be pretty but, it plays and sounds like that $8k Custom... Back to the show.

    Watching this episode has me wondering about the manufacturing process. For example, what happens first? Binding or staining? I think it’s probably binding first, but wouldn’t it be easier to stain first then bind? To prevent bleed from the stain getting on binding? Also, how much control over flaming do they have. I mean obviously you can’t take a generic piece of wood and make it look amazing just by flame treating it, but with a good piece, can you make a significant improvement? How much does it depend on the natural quality of the wood selected and how much on handling? 80/20 or more like 60/40? Just curious 🤔. Thanks for the interesting content. I learn something new every day and have fun doing it. Even if I’ll never afford any of these collectors grade examples.

      I’m on the fence. I think it’s just insane that guitars I bought just 2 years ago for $2,200 are now being LISTED for $8K+. On the other hand, there is no way I would ever pay that much to buy them now. Not because the value may not be there, just because of the fact that I can’t play shows with them without worrying that they will get stolen, or a clumsy stagehand will knock it over.
      Try not to feel discouraged. Just remember, Austin/Trogly is a FLIPPER of guitars. He has a vested interest in trying to inflate the value of these things more than anyone else. Just watch the video again. He is constantly adding an extra $300-$500 to the sold listing prices, and claiming that a guitar is unique because of a Nashville Bridge, a tummy cut, and an ugly “Apex Volute”. It’s just a Custom with a few extra quirks that distance it from the Historics people tend to want.

      I don't think Gibson was very fancy until prs showed up. I'm not sure of that but just thinking back.

      @@stringlocker Yeah not sure. But I know that Gibson very much keeps tabs on what PRS is doing as they're taking quite a large market share these days

    there is the one - and then others others are different some are the same compare the others with the first ones and put them into order then compare them again and work out which ones are different once you have worked out the differences and put them into order then you can go to bed and have a sleep then what is great is that tomorrow you can do it all again...
