According to Wikipedia Hans von Bulow called this prelude "suffocation" and Richter conveyed this so well - I felt my breathing was restricted as I listened to it.
Richter was 6 years younger than me when this was recorded, but so much deeper and more profound. He speaks straight to my heart and soul. I have listened to this hundreds of times an it still brings out tears. I can only imagine what the Polish audience felt in his concert after enduring a horrible war just a decade prior and losing their family members and friends.
Chopin is not my favourite composer, but gosh, hasn't Richter hit me with this one! Truly majestic! I think composers like Chopin shouldn't be over-dramatized, and played very simply, like this prelude. Because all the drama is already in the music, no need to pump it up.
I totally agree with you. I just listened to a version by Martha Argerich and in my opinion she overstates the emotion and makes it too flashy. Richter is right on the money.
@@johnpiettro4644 To totally agree with you. Martha exaggerates a lot. It is a 'song' on the lover's grave according to the author's note. So, it is up to the person how to behave in the graveyard. I would be quiet and mourning rather than screaming.
@@emilioooo9678Easy to play, extremely difficult to play well. Some of the best pianists of all time still end up with comparatively emotionless interpretations of this piece because of how delicate and nuanced the phrases and dynamics of this piece are.
It is a difficult piece, you cannot hide behind acrobatics or a mass of notes. You are "naked" and have to show the world how you manage the expression and the touch. Listen at their Prelude 4 and you will know how is the musicality of the pianist.
The only one who understands... Bravo!! I dont give a fuck bout the wrong note when his interpretation is not pretentious and respects the emotional message of the composer
Of other versions, I like this best. There is a very subtle "swing" to the tempo with the left hand, which nearly gives it a Jazz feel. I can hear a slight brush stroke played softly on a drum and even a restrained acoustic Bass with this piece if it were adapted for Jazz musicians. Masterpiece. Richter conveys the intense emotion....sorrow, longing, emptiness perhaps in this piece of music. Chopin rules!
exactly. This brush. And the tempo like out of the 8 octas the first two are slow and then like gravity kicks and 3-6 faster and again 7-8 slow.. Like a constant denial. start -stop in each sentence. Amazing
I could say " this demonstrate that also legendary musicians are human and can fail... " but in this particular case (IMHO) the dissonance even increases the atmosphere. My conclusion is that if Richter could make art also from mistakes probably he was not human; he was from celestial breed....
The tune is simply ineffable. I am pretty sure that it was used in the soundtrack to a Jimmy Cagney movie called 'Man of a Thousand Faces' a biopic of Lon Chaney.

In 10 secs, already in a different universe. What a magician.
I listen to tons of music and I must say this is without any doubt one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. Period.
I was taught to play this prelude in this slow tempo by a teacher from conservatory, it's really the best version I heard!

He paid attention to Chopin's indication of Largo -- it's supposed to be played Largo, not a hundred miles an hour like some do. Bravo, Richter.
Largo with 2/2*. It is faster than the mainstream. Rubinstein plays it at the correct speed
Its in cut time though. People do the same thing with the moonlight. They ignore the time signature.
@@ChopinIsMyBestFriend I think you're confusing largo with legato. Largo is a slow musical tempo.

Interesting how every pianist interpretate this piece different. I think this is my favourite version.
Have you heard Jimmy Page's guitar version? It brings out the pathos more sharply than the piano does.
@@travisbaskerfield Thats his worse performance of his career... His whole setlist not just that piece he played
Through Jimmy page is how I discovered this song and composer ...I agree I like this version 👍 nice!!
Mine too
There’s no such word as interpretate.
the best version ever ...
Bob Wire Not Sokolov?? 🙄
Nadia De Simone
Nadia ? Arab?
Have you heard Cortot?
Cortot does take the tempo quicker, but he does that to give some space to slow it down at certain parts. But to each their own. Happy listening :)

you can listen very well the MEZZO FORTE and the PIANISSIMO in the left hand.

It upset chopin when people would add extra embellishments to his works. Liszt would especially do it and chopin hated it.
"Чудесный Шопен, великолепный Рихтер"... Снимаю шляпу перед верными определениями
How sad was that??? Had me crying....so delicate. Wonderful performance. Thank you.
Master of interpretation.

He nailed it.
Richter was a visionary and a prophet. Only a prophet could communicate the vision.

Sokolov version's stupendous, eloquent. Richter's pedestrian to compare, too pensive.
Nice, but he missed the tone once. Well, nobody is perfect.
I love Richter but honestly think this interpretation is too slow. I prefer the recording with Martha Argerich.
+Sarah Nyberg Pergament I emphatically agree. Her interpretation is the best I've heard. Far more dynamic, and tells a much more detailed story.
+Sarah Nyberg Pergament Freire, Ohlsson, Perahia and Pollini are also recommendable.
Sarah Nyberg Pergament, me too
She rushes through it. It is meant to be played Largo.
