“Żal” refers to nostalgia and grief after some irretrievable beauty and moments of happiness - or ones that are bound to pass. Chopin’s adoring parents and elder sisters, his friendships and sweetheart, his heroic motherland, his youthful dreams all taken away at the tender age of twenty, when his father - fearful for his life - sent him off on the last carriage before the advancing Russian armies. Of course, Chopin’s popularity is the best proof that you need not be Polish to experience a similar kind of emotion. At the other end of the globe, in Japan, people seem to be filled every spring with an emotion akin to “żal” viewing the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossom. Sakura to them must be the visual equivalent of Chopin’s music.

Chopins music is so beautiful. It brings back so many nostalgic happy memories of my childhood and teenage years when I was learning the piano. That was back in the fifties and sixties in South Africa where I lived.

Agreed, although many nocturnes are deeply sad, sentimental, melancholic and even tragic - we deeply co-feel it with Chopin, whose life was trully miserable, even in spite of all his wealth and sophisticated ambient that he experienced beyond Poland. He didn't want to leave home, didn't have good health, didn't have many true friends, especially by his side abroad, he even didn't experience much of true understanding of his music. All this is deep in his music, actually in each piece, not only nocturnes. When we feel longing for something, desperate longing with no hope at azimus - that's Chopin's mood. Always deep & sad, with short blinks of joy, always beautiful, extremely beautiful.❤️🇵🇱

Whenever I listen to Chopin I feel like I’ve become a piano, with gentle fingers sweeping on my keys, ringing out the emotions from the depths of my heart. There’s always something in Chopin’s music that is so relaxing yet stirs the intense emotions of people. Just beautiful. :)

Chopin's music reminds me to stop and think about what I managed to change in myself in order to move on. But this is if someone really set himself the goal of changing something in his/my life. Thanks to Schubert and his music. It is like a bus that stops at the stop that each of us needs. A month and a half passed and I was able to change the perception of those people who did not perceive me. The music is straightforward and devoid of guile. I'm not a fan of cellists anymore. Thank you HALIDONMUSIC!

My nana used to play Chopin on her grande without sheet music. As a child it was always my favourite to dance to. She used to teach piano and loved Chopin’s music so deeply. Thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories of her. I will always keep this music close to my heart. ❤️

One day I was listening to Chopin at 2am in the morning, and I literally felt a presence of someone, just so you know I was alone that night, but when I was listening to music I felt like somebody was sitting besides me, and again just so you know Chopin is my biggest inspiration he's my master

“Żal” refers to nostalgia and grief after some irretrievable beauty and moments of happiness - or ones that are bound to pass. Chopin’s adoring parents and elder sisters, his friendships and sweetheart, his heroic motherland, his youthful dreams all taken away at the tender age of twenty, when his father - fearful for his life - sent him off on the last carriage before the advancing Russian armies. Of course, Chopin’s popularity is the best proof that you need not be Polish to experience a similar kind of emotion. At the other end of the globe, in Japan, people seem to be filled every spring with an emotion akin to “żal” viewing the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossom. Sakura to them must be the visual equivalent of Chopin’s music.
Incredible explanation. Deeply touched by Frederic’s music. He is one of a kind. I visited Warsaw especially to visit cathedral with his heart and listen to his music. I mean live concert. Japanese pianist Mamiko Ueyama was soooo soulstirring so I cried all concert. It never happened to me. He is music goes straight to my soul.

Chopin was a propagandist for his native country of Poland, which did not exist at the time, having long been divided among its enemies (read Michener's novel). As Schumann said, there were canons beneath the roses. Now that all that's said and done, perhaps we can consider the universal in Chopin's music.. It is not just a curiosity for historians, but a universal message for all of us.

@@teresadasilva4450 Start with the short pieces, for instance the Mazurkas, he wrote them his whole life, they're very short, intimate, charming pieces, with lovely and subtle melodies. Then listen to the waltzes, take your time to listen, and then, try the Preludes. After that you will be able to move to more sophisticated works while understanding them better
