Burned alive: Restoring a gsxr1000

- Vivian, my 2009 gsxr1000, caught fire in the middle of the night in September of 2016. She was parked, was not being charged, and the ignition was off. Everyone’s best guess (fire investigators included) is a short from the battery or main power wire caused the blaze. As you can see, it was kind of hard to tell. Since most of the heat went up and into the subframe, and not into the main frame (the fuel tank’s paint even survived) I figured it was safe to replace the back half of the bike. I installed everything per the manual and she is currently riding as if nothing ever happened.
This video is certainly not all-inclusive, as there were many other hours of cleaning, maintenance, cursing, and small parts installations not shown. But the fun stuff is here :)

Woah just found this channel. I've been restoring since I was 11.... Started with vices and old pipe wrenches, Now I restore boats, cars, bikes, and slowly getting into aircraft!
Love to see the love you give to what "should" be a crushed bike.
bloody well done repairing that mess man... bravo.
Great Job!.and some Top Tunage !...Who's the band @5minute 30 plus??😀👍
It’s a royalty free song from RUclips’s audio library: “Propeller” by Silent Partner
The Gixxer Gods are smiling down upon you sir!
Wow great rebuild. 👍🏾👍🏾
Awesome work but…dammnnn, that was lucky the whole garage didn’t go up! 😳👍🏼
Thanks, definitely glad it didn’t, fire choked itself out while I slept.
With the power of the mullet anything can be brought back, all your dreams and goals can come into fruition.
Just kidding with you! But seriously tho you rock that mullet, and this video inspired me to help my Dad rebuild his 1986 Honda Shadow that went up into an inferno last night. It did more damage than your bike and we don't know yet if the engine is even salvageable, but we're gonna make something of it!
Great work! A good tribute to your bike.
Nice looking bike right there, Brother!
Thanks dude ⚡️
Made me look towards my garage thinking what if one of mine caught fire like that lol
Use fuses with any accessories hooked to the battery so you don’t have to think about it 😬
@@themotofirm u had a cellphone charged hooked up on the battery?
Yes, a USB port connected to the battery tender. I didn’t originally connect the battery tender so I’m not 100% sure they put in a fuse. That’s my best guess as to where the short came from.
nice brooo like fresh again that gsxr 1000 , Super
Thank you, she deserved it
Your a legend, what a job.enjoy.....
Man you made this look easy 💪 good work brotha
Thanks dude 🙏
Great job! I’m thinking of doing my own project. How long did it take to finish the project.
Thanks! This was done over a ~3 month period. Mainly due to having to wait on parts shipping.
@@themotofirm I am considering to buy a 60K miles (but well serviced_maintained) gsxr1000k8. Would you recommend me buy it? Follower from Istanbul..keep up the good work
I’ve had one of those. Rode it from 16k to 35k miles with no problems, checked valves, didn’t need adjustment. Same with my 05, got up to 47k miles no problem.
They’re plenty reliable if maintained. It will be harder to sell due to the miles, so you should be getting a decent price. But those miles aren’t that bad, just higher than most other bikes since they typically don’t get ridden that much and often get crashed before reaching those types of numbers.
Great job man!!
Thank you!
Is it a 2k12 to 2k14 gixxer 1000 & love how it,s restored.
2009, but now she is probably a 2009-2016 since I likely have bits from every year of this gen.
Thanks!
You're the man!💯
Great job !!!
Thanks! ⚡️
You put your shift knuckle on backwards.
I know I know...everything just happened so fast!
Gp shift hahahha
My fav
Brilliant thank you 🙏.
the injector start working just by throwing seafoam in gas?
No, I ended up pulling all the injectors and cleaning them. I figured the sea foam wouldn’t hurt anyway since she hadn’t run in a couple years.
Isnt unconfortable to travel such big distances on a srad?
Not sure about the Srads, those were back in the late 90s.
The 2009+ gsxr1000 are pretty comfy for a sportbike. All I did was add a gel seat and take breaks every 1-1.5 hrs.
@@themotofirm this one u have is a srad, sir
While technically the later gsxrs do have a forced air intake, I don’t believe any gsxr was called that aside from the 96-99 gsxr when “srad” was introduced. But I guess you could call it that 🤷♂️?
@@themotofirm here in Brasil we call them srads even thou they dont have it on the name they still have the system
Ah got it, interesting to know!
I’m in the U.S.
Ride safe dude
What's the total cost?
About $2000, plus who knows how many hours of my labor
@@themotofirm It a was worth every penny plus the project turned out to be a huge success. Congratulations
👍
Omce a bike gets into pretty bad crash especially when the rider gets FUBAR Its a bike for trash.
My duke 250 suffered the same fate
Noooooo
@@themotofirm Yes dude it was almost burned to ashes it happened at 3am in the morning the duke caught fire and started burning vigourously the fire led some minor damage in the surrounding fortunately I found out about the fire before it reached the tank and caused more damage I put out the fire with a garden hose.
I contacted the insurance company they are saying that they will cover up the damage.
If you are interested I will send you some photos
That’s crazy; how did it start?
Mine actually choked itself out. The tank pressurized and pushed the cap up but never exploded. I never even woke up.
@@themotofirm well how it started was the electricity meter box above it shot circuited and sparkes started throwing off i had covered the bike with a sheet the sheet caught fire from the spark and the bike burned out.
If you want to pass the bike,, can i have it for free?
