And the 3D rendering of the tools and process at the end was money! There isn't a better way to demonstrate or communicate the process with clarity like a good 3D model to demonstrate. Thanks again! ✌️

Another greatly informative video! Thanks Joel! I’m being called on to return to using my setting skills (after not using them much over the last 5 years…so I’m a bit rusty). Much appreciated…..adding some setting to my goldsmith in repertoire will definitely augment my value to my employer

My mentor used to make all his tools because when he started jewelery he wasn’t able to get things nearly as often or easily as we can now he had to sharpen all of his burrs when they’d get dull things I could never imagine that’s why I enjoy all of your videos because you’re showing things I could never think of! It's really easy and really fun once you start playing with it. Just buy some tool steel or stainless fork 👆 (great idea) depending on the tool you want to make. I'm a hand engraver and make all of my own gravers, burins, chisels of different geometries. When I learned hand engraving I never expected how much I would love the tool making process part of it. But I'd almost be happy making tools for 8 hours a day I enjoy it so much 😂. Anyways I was gonna say get some 1/8 tool steel or I even use a lot of 3/32 square or round stock tool steel. Then some grinding disk, I have a diamond power hone so I can cut carbide tools also. But you can use any sanding disk, dremel, flex shaft, certain micro motors. Even a bench grinder works. But I would recommend to read and learn about tempering your tools. What color the steel will turn and the tempature. You don't want to over heat a tool or it will be brittle. Burnishers would be fine. But any tool you make that requires impact may be brittle and explode. Always wear eye protection. You want the tool hard but have some give. It just takes a bit of practice and experiment metal tempering and annealing etc.

    • @JMDjewelry
