Sorry about the confusion. So I didn't link to any wire in the list for stone flush setting because I made my own wire for this. If your going to be ordering wire you will need to fine something that with fit your stone. So if you get a 2mm stone you will need at least a 3mm wire or larger. 😁👍 The 16ga you might have seen must have been from a different list on that page. 😅

I am the same age as you and took up ring making and refurbishing as a way to make a little cash on the side. I’ve only been at this for two years and am having a blast. I started by buying interesting vintage silver jewelry on online auctions, cleaning, polishing and listing them on Etsy. As a fellow jeweller, the only technique I tend to do differently is to mark out the spacing, and then use a scriber to make a deeper hole, and I start drilling or burring slowly with the drill or bur touching the metal in that recess. You say in the video that one of the settings was a little off. You might find you have a little more control over the positioning of the hole if you start a little slower.

To get a more accurate measurement around the ring for the number of stones, simply divide the number of stones into 360 and this will give an angle for each setting. Example, 8 stones would give you a setting every 45 deg. Lay the ring down flat and set a protract underneath and mark the edge every 45 deg. Wam!!
Awesome video. Started channel setting stones a couple months ago and I was going straight to the piece lol. Sooooo many rings. Should have done the metal sheet thing first.
Nice video! But honestly , I had never use any setting burrs, I drill a hole, then use a round burr and finally using a hart burr to make a little groove in the setting. The “click” sound is very satisfying 😊
Hi GomeowCreations. The maths is right for finding the circumference of the circle and then dividing by eight to get 9.1 in the example(22:45). BUT the application of using calipers to mark out 9.1mm measurements invites error because you are spanning across the curve of the circle 9.1mm but in actual fact you need to travel 9.1mm round the circumference not across it as the distance between callipers is a straight line. This error gives MORE than 9.1 each step ( ~ 9.4mm) as this is a greater distance on an outside curve than the straight line gap between. This doesn't have much of an effect ONCE but if you do it seven times to make eight stone marks you will get and error of more than 2mm on the final gap. A better way using circumference is to mark the distance on a thin piece of paper and WRAP round the circumference surface of the ring to measure the distance. This will then give you accurate 9.1mm increments around. There is however a way to determine exact calliper spacing for the straight line distance using a bit of simple maths. The best way is to think of the ring's circle divided by eight which gives an octagon using eight isosceles triangles. An isosceles triangle is 2 right angle triangles back-to-back so with some simple trigonometry we can get the span needed with callipers as opposed to round the circumference. To make the isosceles triangle is a 45º angle (360º full revolution /8), so we need to half that for the right angle. Then, since we have the angle (22.5º) and the hypothenuse of the triangle (radius of the circle 11.6 that’s 23.2/2), we can use formula to get the span Sin (is a scientific key on most calculators) 22.5 = opp/ hyp So Opp = Sin 22.5 x hyp Opp = Sin 22.5 (from any scientific calculator or computer= 0.382) x 11.6 (rad) = 4.43 We need to double this because the RA triangles are back-to-back, giving a span of 8.86mm So set callipers for 8.8 not 9.1. Also mark 3 round to left from starting point, then four round from right from start so that any compounded errors are minimised. Now this seems like a great deal of fuss for such a small difference, but on items with fewer stone settings it would make an even greater discrepancy. 6 stone settings on the same ring would give nearly 3mm error per step if you set the calipers to the fraction of circumference instead of using the formula…
I love your work and your informative videos - thank you so much! I noticed Jonathon's point too - the caliper measures in a straight line while the ring is curved - leading to a slight difference in length - however spacing on this style of ring isn't critical.
@@GomeowCreations Thank you for getting us 'close' to the measurements, it works! Most of us don't do the scientific math! Can use the circle 'Polar Graph Paper' and adjust the settings to what you are making. Download at www.incompetech.com. Pretty cool. BTW, I LOVE your videos!!! WooHoo!
Exactly! If i want 10 stones, then there is 36° between each one. I divide it by 2 and then use it and the radius to determine the half way between two stones. I can do it by writing, it is not that hard, if we have the cos for that half angle, but there is some trigonometry apps that help a lot since it give us that half way quickly and we have to only input the radius and the half angle (from the center).

Thanks for this quick and easy tutorial. You actually make it look quite simple and take the fear out of me attempting it.;) Have you ever made flush set stones with beads? That would be helpful if you did a series on the different types of settings
Good math lesson! 👍 I knew to multiply Diameter x Pi to get circumference (which equates to length in this case) but was forgetting to allow for the thickness. I was always good at math but High School math class was a loooooong time ago! 😄 LOL! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the video. You make so many beautiful rings! I want to try them all. .06 is a very thick gauge, about 14 or 15. I have 18 and wondered if that would work with a 3mm stone. This would make a beautiful mother's or grandmother's ring.
Thank you and I don't think 18 ga will work for that size stone seeing that it is only about 1mm thick meaning that the stone is 3 times bigger than the metal. For a 3 mm stone I use something that is 4mm wide at minimum seeing that you will only have 0.5mm of room on the sides.
So very slightly countersink a hole shaped like the stone and stake it in place with a staking tool and them burnish it smooth? We would just file the hole into other shapes to do other shaped stones yes?
That job is impossible to come out centered, them holes, without a miniature drill press and a nest setup; i,as a machinist, would not even attempt it like you did; Thanks for the video, still learned quite a bit.
It allows light to come through, it also allows you to push the stone out if it gets stuck in the setting and at a bad angle also one it's set it will make it a lot easier to clean under the stone in the future.

Then, since we have the angle (22.5º) and the hypothenuse of the triangle (radius of the circle 11.6 that’s 23.2/2), we can use formula to get the span
Sin (is a scientific key on most calculators) 22.5 = opp/ hyp
So Opp = Sin 22.5 x hyp
Opp = Sin 22.5 (from any scientific calculator or computer= 0.382) x 11.6 (rad) = 4.43
We need to double this because the RA triangles are back-to-back, giving a span of 8.86mm
So set callipers for 8.8 not 9.1.
Thank you for all that info but that math is a little over my head 😅. I will try to under stand this and use it later, when my head is clean haha
I love your work and your informative videos - thank you so much! I noticed Jonathon's point too - the caliper measures in a straight line while the ring is curved - leading to a slight difference in length - however spacing on this style of ring isn't critical.

Randy, super cool thing that blew my mind (LOL): Take my charcoal block and sand it into a practically brand new looking one with 80 grit sandpaper on a flat surface. It was a miracle!! This is a VERY well done video, Randy you are a great teacher.
Oh that is a good idea but I have a new block 😁. This block is used for melting metals and other things that I use a lot of flux on but I will use that trick if I need it to be smooth. 😁
Great video.. Thanks for detailed descriptions of each step..!!
This was a very educational video thanks alot im planning on becomming a jeweler im tired of buying over priced pieces when i could do it myself i have tons of metals to work with just sitting in my safe i just need to buy the tools and chemicals
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! Loved it all! I have just ordered some tiny stones and had no idea how to set them.🙏🙏🙏
Well thank you very much 😊 if you have any problems just let me know.
Thank you for this video it was very helpful
Very good tutorial. Thank you.
There's a little dremmel drill press type tool that I've been eyeballing because it would make drilling the holes etc so much easier
Yeah that is a good idea
Thank you for the lesson! I will train.
😁👍
Thankssss, siento que lo amo, gracias, no había encontrado una explicación tan detallada y clara, y eso que no hablo inglés, solo entiendo un poco, gracias de nuevo
Great video, very instructive. Thanks
Well thank you very much 😊
ThAt was excellent Very well done
Yas! Excellent!! This was so easy explaines. Thanks!
Well thank you and I hope it helps you make beautiful work. 😁
This was great, I appreciate you posting this video. You did an awesome job explaining the process.
Well thank you 😊
Thanks for this quick and easy tutorial. You actually make it look quite simple and take the fear out of me attempting it.;) Have you ever made flush set stones with beads? That would be helpful if you did a series on the different types of settings
Thank you and I haven't done this will beads. I will have to look into how to make videos on other setting in the future.
Thank you, that was very helpful! Nice pieces.💚
Thabks
Great closeup video - can see what you’re doing
I don’t really understand what holds the stone in but I believe
It's basically a thin bit of metal that you are burnishing or rubbing over the stone that keeps it in place
I just purchased a hammer piece and a set of tips for my flex shaft. Do you have a video showing what the tips can do?
Here is one video on it ruclips.net/video/zlysUJaPknQ/видео.html
Thank you. It's a very good guide.
No problem 😊
Thank you so helpful as a beginner
Good math lesson! 👍 I knew to multiply Diameter x Pi to get circumference (which equates to length in this case) but was forgetting to allow for the thickness. I was always good at math but High School math class was a loooooong time ago! 😄 LOL! Thanks!
I come from a Chinese handmade jewelry factory. he are very cool
LOVE your videos! Always looking forward to the next one!
Keep on keepin on. 😉
Thank you 😊
Thanks so much for the video.
Thanks that was brill I have wanted to have a go at flush setting for ages I think now I might have a go 😁.
Give it a try and if you need any help just let me know 😊
So very slightly countersink a hole shaped like the stone and stake it in place with a staking tool and them burnish it smooth? We would just file the hole into other shapes to do other shaped stones yes?
Glad I found your vid because I was just gonna go for it lmao great explanations that helped alot
That job is impossible to come out centered,them holes, without a miniature drill press and a nest setup; i,as a machinist,would not even attempt it like you did;
Thanks for the video, still learned quite a bit.
Lovely work, can I ask the name of the tool you are using to go around the stone to keep them in place?
Thank you, great talent.
Thank you for this! I learned so much 🥰
great work sir
Can you explain the necessity of drilling all the way through on your pilot? Great video and thanks!
It allows light to come through, it also allows you to push the stone out if it gets stuck in the setting and at a bad angle also one it's set it will make it a lot easier to clean under the stone in the future.
@@GomeowCreations ah! I hadn't thought of the light, very subtle design. Thank you for such a quick reply! I'm hoping to try making my own jewelry soon and you are a great resource!
