    Out if curiosity I googled "Tanner Anderson" and thanks to that I found out about Obsequiae, man, where have I been all these years! Wow, that a masterpiece.

    Good shit... no surprise given that could be a blanket statement about anything you post. I think Tanner nailed it regarding challenging albums of our youth vs challenging albums now. If I had to come up with a list of three:
    Neurosis "Souls at Zero"
    Manes "Under Ein Blodraud Maane"
    OLD "Lo Flux Tube"

      @AbiesIIIBalsamea 7 лет назад +2

      Eric Bauer - right on! OLD was actually one of the bands I was going to talk about before we kind of spaced on a few picks. Killer to see you mention them and cool to see we're in good company here!

    • @HighDefTV
      @HighDefTV 7 лет назад +2

      That Kataklysm was a great pick, and not too obvious either. I actually just talked about The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation some on my channel. I love how they kind of morphed the ferocity and technicality of bands like Suffocation or Monstrosity with the absolute feral bile of shit like Blasphemy or Demigod. It was so co-opted but simultaneously unique.

      Eric Bauer Totally agreed with Under Ein Blodraud Maane. When I first heard it that album confused the shit out of me, but now it's one of my favorite black metal albums ever

    Probably the most challenging album I can think of is In the Distance by Vediog Svaor. I was always so intrigued by it but couldn't get fully into it for the longest time, but now I fucking love it

    anything by deathspell omega, really. ive been able to get into really heavy obscure stuff like pyrrhon, swallowed, impetuous ritual etc. even if it took a lot of listens. but deathspell omega, no chance for me

    Oh man, that Mordor "Csejthe" album immediately went on discogs wantlist. I like that idea you bring up of innovation vs amateurishness, and I can hear what you mean when listening to that album, and I think that is part of the draw for me.... I think one of most challenging albums for me, and it is still challenging me, is Midnight Odyssey's "Shards of Silver Fade". I know I like it, but the sheer overall size of the album (in terms of track lengths and the overall album length) makes it a difficult to really contextualize the album as one whole piece - though part of that is also that each song is a massive soundscape in itself..... Cool video idea... Thanks!

    VBE are one of my favorite bands. i thought they were super original also, but when i listened to Dimension Hatross (Voivod) then i realised how influential to their sound that record was. i m not saying that as a negative thing but all those dissonant jazzy chords are influenced by Voivod

    • @ViolentBlasphemy
      @ViolentBlasphemy 5 лет назад

      audiopain Funny, I worship VBE, but I can’t stand Voivod. I understand the influence on VBE, but I could just never get into Voivod. I just read that VBE actually performed last night or something! Holy shit I would kill to have been there! A one time reunion thing I am sure!

    • @audiopain
      @audiopain 5 лет назад

      @@ViolentBlasphemy VBE performed???? Where??? surely its a one time thing. This band was unique,and unfortunately Virus isn't their successors as a lot of people think or want. Carheart was nice but nothing special.Now,about Voivod, i m not a huge fan,but reading an interview by Fenriz 15 years ago or more, talking about that one record (hatross) and how it impacted black metal i had to check. Trust me it;s great.

      @@audiopain January 26th, 2019 I believe. Definitely a one off. I think some kind of party or something. There is a 20 second or so clip from someone's phone on Facebook. I loved Virus. Definitely not VBE, but a shame to hear they are now defunct as well. I know I need to go back, and check out some Voivod. I will start with Dimension Hatross.

    This probably sounds noobish and it's not really a metal album, but one of the most personally challenging albums I ever got into was The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium. Like you said though, once it clicked with me it really stayed with me.
    It didn't even click all at once. I just slowly started finding myself liking different parts of the album. The last thing for me to finally fully embrace were the vocals. At first I really hated them, but after a while I found myself not minding them so much in one or two of the songs. By the end, I was a downright Mars Volta fanatic.
    This was before I had ever listened to a metal album other than things like Master of Puppets

    • @brainsmasher666
      @brainsmasher666  7 лет назад +3

      sirmeatwad you may be surprised but I love that album. I was even an At the Drive-in fan years before even hearing it. I instantly loved it though.

    • @Sirmeatwad
      @Sirmeatwad 7 лет назад

      I am a little surprised actually lol but I'm glad you like it. I had never even heard of At the Drive-in when I listened to Deloused. At the time I was just listening to things like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Modest Mouse was what I considered to be underground and experimental.
      Once I got into it though all the other music I heard just sounded boring to me in comparison. It was a big milestone for me as far as getting into extreme music
