I purchased these almost solely from this review. That may sound crazy to some, but I trust you. Based on so many reviews of a myriad of products, I have developed a sense of where we may agree and where we may disagree. This review spoke to me, my needs, my projected hopes, my future. My rooms are rarely perfect, and I like to move every few years. I love researching and would love to waste countless hours imagining my next component purchase, a/b-ing all my recordings, fiddling endlessly. But what I want and what I need are often at odds. And this is what I need. After an embarrassing interval of mistakenly assigning both speakers as left channels and wondering why certain frequencies were missing etc etc. I absolutely love them. They sound majestic. The sub-bass sometimes startles me in the nicest way and the upper mids and treble get me on the edge of my seat nearly every time I’m listening. Pianos simply come alive through the A500 in the most magical way.

I’m in a similar boat in that a speaker like this fits my needs perfectly (except the Platin hub doesn’t do Airplay 2). I’m not sure that the sound quality from these will meet my needs, so I look forward to seeing what the next generation brings to the table.

Same here! When it comes to audio, I trust John’s judgement. The A500’s are here in my living room, I am listening to them as I write this. They are glorious. God I missed that bass in my previous set.

Yeah I'm also pretty convinced that I'll buy these once I have the finances for them. My NAD pre- and power amp will be sold, just like my current speakers.
I was thinking about a set of Wharfedale Elysian 2's, but I doubt my current amps will do them justice. They basically cost the same, these Buchardts and those Wharfedales, but I'd need a new amp and also my €100 dac would need replacement.
I am thinking of a Heaven11 Billie + Denafrips Pontus + Wharfedale Elysian 2 + dual SVS SB-1000 pro combo but my wife would most certainly kill me for that!
I think these Buchardts with their hub would be a much wiser choice.

Hi John, I have the A500 for a couple of weeks now and I am blown away . It´s a gamechanger and your review nails it! Great job!
Concidering that you don´t need an external DAC, a networkbridge , amps and cables I would say they are worth every single cent and more. Mads Buchardt does a fantastic job taking care of his costumers, never had such a support before.
Just one thing that i thought You should have mentioned....they get better every day as they need some time for breaking in.

I work in live audio and seeing this level of Future Tech in an enclosure doesn’t surprise me in the least. It’s been.way too long that the audiophile world has forcibly kept itself back while tech has developed elsewhere, to dramatic and positive effect. Thanks for shining a light on companies willing to take risks, go against audiophile dogma and lean into these new developments, and come out with impressive products. Keep up the good work.

As a DIY speaker designer/builder I am amazed by how much stuff can be crammed into such a (relatively) small cabinet and still achieve such wide-ranging, accurate sound. 3 drivers each in their own sub-enclosure, 3 DACs, 3 Class D amps in a cabinet that measures 365 x 180 x 280 mm (14.4” x 7” x 11”). That’s only 18.17 liters (.64 cu ft) for the overall cabinet dimensions! Subtracting the thickness of the walls including the sub-enclosures, the drivers, and the active components doesn’t seem to leave much so I imagine the remaining interior space is crammed full of stuffing.

Active Speakers and DSP is for audio what ABS and traction control were for cars and still are for motorcycles: it's the new kid on the block and as such gets ridiculed and downplayed by the old-fashioned folks because they have not experienced it or don't understand it. Hats off to a) Buchardt audio for having created such a marvel of electronic engineering and b) John Darko for this great video and his attitude towards such advancements.

    • @veritas932
      @veritas932 3 года назад

while I agree that active amp and DSP is good, I feel that DSP technology is still at it's infancy. That means that in the next couple of years, there will be new DSP chips that will be a vast improvement over the current generation. With the Buchardt all in one solution, you will not be able to take advantage of the new generation chips. Software DSP upgrades can only get you so far. Advances in chip technology will vastly improve the processing power and gives better results. Look at nvidia graphics cards or game consoles. Every new generation increases the power of the previous generation. it is the same with DSP chips.

    • @latzelsperger
      @latzelsperger 3 года назад

@@veritas932 yup I agree, it's certainly not the last word in engineering, just think about the fact, that cloud computing and AI has not (yet) found its way into high-end DSP.
But All-in-One-solutions are hassle-free, you don't have to match, buy and setup multiple components. In your analogy this would be comparable to laptops or AIO-computers like the iMac. They certainly have their place. And for the sake of completeness, there _are_ ways to do it, just look at Schiit's upgrade cards or NADs extension modules.
At their core graphics chips are not that different from DSP chips - they can perform extremely fast floating point matrix multiplications.

The Buchardt I150 integrated is now able to be preordered and a discount. Plus a very nice further discount for those who already own Buchardt speakers. I was considering that for my S400 SE, but now that I have tried the A500 I am not going to go that route. I don't think that the S400 SE, due to the fact that it employs a passive radiator, will ever be able to deliver the timbres that the A500 can.

I work in tech, write code, and fool with enough electronics to be a little jaded - but I have to agree this system is just FANTASTIC. Just the right combination of very smart features and engineering to be truly innovative, with no shouty "hey look at me I'm high tech." I am also geeking over here, with a huge smile. DSP provides so many advantages V's the 'typical' passive setup. The ability to adjust a speaker to a room, or to taste and adjust for time domain/phase shift anomalies is so valuable.

    • @markd4292

Yeah, I did my research on the DSP technology, but never demoed any product featuring it. I don't know if I want to spend 4K on something for a demo first however! Unless I get some other speaker less than 1K to demo then base my decision off of that, of course providing the technology in that particular speaker is very good, because if it's poor than there's no way to determine if I am going to like the A500's. I mentioned earlier that I am still on the fence about getting all in one active speakers like this or more traditional approach. I mentioned the Forte III and how to scale they are and how a driver as small as the A500 will Never simulate, never. But still I have to decide and just see what happens.

Boy, have I been waiting for THIS! Such an exciting product... Thanks John!
*Edit:* I say that because the Buchardt s400 looked fantastic but I'm too enamored with future-fi convenience/ optimisation to return to the world of separates. The "low level correction" feature is ingenious in my opinion, and a brilliant example Future-Fi being more than just convenience/ "lifestyle" products. Happy to see these haven't disappointed.
Also, I don't own a lump of tin, but I do own a pair of Kef LS50 wireless and funnily enough they broke last year. I took them back to Kef who happily repaired them, promptly, out of waranty, for next to nothing. They were an absolute pleasure to speak to as well.

Future-fi does have the typical downside of putting all your eggs in one basket - if your speakers malfunction, your entire system goes down. The A500s are much more complex electronically than passive speakers, so more can go wrong. Then you have to pack everything up and send back to Denmark. Don't mean to be Debbie downer, but keeping it real.

    Very classy channel.
I’m considering this speaker for professional nearfield use. Before viewing this episode, I had nudged the A500 towards the “NO” column. There’s not a lot of examples of engineers using them successfully. You’ve strongly revived my interest in this speaker. I’ll most likely take advantage of the 45 day return policy to try them in my own environment. The next thing on my list that I would consider is an $8000 pair of Genelecs. I’d rather spend 4K if they can get the job done.
I really enjoyed your review. Thanks.

Fantastic video. I think you are spot on with the idea that the old schoolers main objection to digital based systems is primarily the lack of any ability to modify or upgrade the sound with technical adjustments. I’ve been playing with some digital devices myself and have found that with the correct tools you can make amazing changes that make make even the low quality I am playing with sound reasonably good.
I still like to use “vintage”. Gear but I have to say the new digital way is very compelling.
One other thing that caught my attention was that these use a separate amp for each driver and a separate d to a converter for each (at least that’s how I understood it). That’s a first as far as I understand.
With that configuration it would seem as if you would have unbelievable control on what actually is produced by each driver.
At any rate I am rambling so 👍👍

Finally a review on the A500s. I've been emailing Mads way before any reviews were out and I have been putting off getting the Forte III's based on reviews of these speakers. I keep getting hung up on making a decision on front end gear, and speakers because of the whole optimal pairing or system matching synergy thing. It would be different if I had loads of money and get this for that and that for this, and have all sorts of system pairing but I don't. I like the idea of simplicity but having quality audio, and engaging audio. Now is the question: do these A500s sound as big as the Forte's? I can't imagine, I mean calculating the whole physics thing of size of speaker driver differences between the two, but maybe with a sub? But may be they do as is? All I know is out of the dozens of speakers I demoed those Forte's are just infectious and made the music real and palatable, moreover they just made me enjoy the music. Now if these can get me there and then some well then this is the path I should take. I have to watch your continuing review part 3 on these. But thank you John. Stay healthy.

Well done John. As one of your ten year followers starting on the web when you lived Down Under I see this review as one you have worked towards laying the groundwork for some time. The many discussions of Future Fi have set the stage for evaluating products like the Kii and now A500. Many of the old school audiophiles like myself will continue to play with our multibox systems. Its fun and sounds good so no harm no foul. However it is closed minded and short sighted to deny that DSP is bringing new capabilities and possibilities. From the Darko Future Fi point of view you are placed to report when companies like Buchardt use DSP focused in on high-end HiFi.

I’ve never upgraded my system for over 25 years because it still sounds great. But now, my floorstanders are taking up too much space and aesthetically, looking a bit dated as we (my wife) upgrade our house. Active speakers may help me in that respect and Buchardt seem to be making waves in the speaker department and 25Hz low end looks impressive. Thanks for the review.

They can sound rather dull out of the box but the different master recordings allow you to change the profile of the speakers. Losing my stereo pair amps has tidied the room up. Now to but a discrete preamp.

I own the Dynaudio Xeo 3 and 4 speakers as well as the Kef LS50 W and the LSX. I've both the Kef speakers totally fail and have to be replaced. I've never had a second of trouble with the Dyanudios. The Dynaudio uses a similar looking hub. It would be a godsend if they came out with a hub you could sync to the xeos that did what the buchardt does. Seems like Buchardt looked at all the competition and what was lacking and put it all in one speaker. Amazing. I'd love to see John review the B&W Duo as well as the Dynaudio Xeo or XD models. Personally I like the sound of the Xeo better than the Kef LS50W its a warmer and fuller sound, better bass.

This is a very positive review of what, in my opinion, is a very very good product.
I have the Buchardt S400 SE speakers that I drive with a Crayon CIA 1T amplifier fronted by a Chord MScaler/Chord Dave DAC system.
Out of curiosity, I decided to try the A500 speakers and hub.
Due to my high end electronics, I really didn't think that the A500 system could sound better than my S400SE system.
But it definitely does... in every way.
The A500 system excels in frequency range, soundstage width and depth, transparency, clarity, timbres, etc..
It goes deeper but the bass is better controlled and more timbrally accurate (this is very important to me). The Chord DAVE is known for transients/attacks, which I found made the music more dynamic and come alive. When I got Chord components I really loved them for their ability to do this. The CIA iT is also known for its speed and liveliness.
However, it is my opinion that in this respect the A500 system is just as good as the Chord/CIA iT/S400SE.
I am in agreement with John's assessment of the difference between the Kii 3 and the A500. I heard the Kii 3 and I was turned off by their ''surgical'' precision. They sounded much too analytical... cerebral... lacking emotion.
    The A500 sound musical.
As I said above, I didn't think that the A500 could beat my S400SE system. Now the A500 system is all I want to listen to.
Which on the one hand is great... but on the other it's kind of a bummer.

I'd love to know how these compare to the B&W Formation Duo's which is similarly priced, is also like to know how it might compare to other DSP enabled with room correction speakers , the new B&O Beosound Balance comes to mind, also worth considering the Beolab 17's which dont have room correction but do have Wisa and cost around the same price.

But I am looking for a update to 5+1 surround sound - not for improved sound but to be able to get parts for repairs. There's something important (to me) that wasn't mentioned. The hub has no analog pre-out, so you can't connect a subwoofer to this system unless it's also WISA compatible. The Buchardt website says you have to buy one of two Primare preamps if you want to use your own sub, and those preamps are $1,800 and $4,500 and it's unclear but seems you then lose the

I'm all for active speaker systems but why such the disparity in warranty from their passive counterparts? Kef LS50 is 5 year warranty, LS50 wireless is 2 year warranty. Similar deal with the burchardt but 10 year on the passive and 2 on active (for the electronics). Obviously there are a lot more components but it just makes it seem like the company doesn't believe in the longevity of their active products so much.

I am more concerned about getting parts. In a passive system the amplifier is more likely to fail than the speakers. If you can't get it repaired you buy another amplifier. With digital active speakers the DAC is more likely to fail than the amp and the amp more likely than the speakers. One component not fixable and it is not only one speaker to replace, at least a pair, maybe forcing reconsideration on the rear speakers and centre.

    Hi John,
Was wondering if you could run a video on what brings the magic with Hi-fi gear? You mention with the Kii that it delivers what we think we want, “but how many of us will actually part with our hard earned cash”. You also bought the Klipsch stating “they were coloured but were fun”. There was also the schiit freya, and now this vid on the Buchardt where the most enjoyable profile is one the engineers didn’t want to release.
I’ll get to my recent journey shortly, but perhaps you could do a video on the type of imperfections we should be looking for depending on our tastes, possibly covering:
    Frequency response
    Roll off
    Smoothness, warmth
    Leading edges
    Punch, power, impact
    Soundstage
    Room reflections
My journey - Moved house a year and a half ago and was instantly disappointed by how bad my lounge sounded with my existing system. Very reflective, sideways, asymmetric room with alcoves. Speakers needing to be obstructively out into the room to make sense of it all. I can finally afford an “endgame”ish setup, but thought this would likely be a massive waste of money given the room (have tried experimenting with a huge amount of rockwool, but found it no more effective than placing cushions at 1st reflection points which could then be put back again).
So I ordered the Dutch and Dutch…
Seems to cover all the bases right? However…I did not like them! In fact, I would go as far as to say that they absolutely killed the magic that I have in my existing modest setup, despite being much much clearer and technically “better” in so many ways. Like yours, they also had a fault, which made it a lot easier to send back after trialling them. Part of the problem for me was “removing the room” which is what I wanted as it did get rid of reflections, however I have positioned my existing speakers in such that all the reflections almost paint the venue/recording space on my walls around me. With that removed I had a very clear picture of the singer on the front wall, but they were no longer in the room with me, engaging me in the performance. Also the hard leading edged which at first were impressive, stopped me relaxing into the music and thus the magic was gone.
I have learned a lot from this journey, but I expect you could add a lot more. Particularly with your contacts at Buchardt where they are working on such things. Please can you consider an article covering different system attributes/foibles which we may actually want to be looking for so we can make better choices?
    Cheer,

in my room, they're the best sounding speakers that I have ever owned. Unfortunately some of the units, mine included, are struggling to stream music consistently due to issues with the third party manufactured platin streamer (hub + remote). If you're considering making the purchase, I might just wait until Buchard is able to put out their own streaming solution which I'm told is currently in the works.
