    Some very special features of the A10 are not covered here. With the hub, you can do room eq (some people would pay 500$ or more for that feature) and you can add your specific very precise Eq on top of the room eq and the master tuning... so when Steve says that the warm master tuning is too much for him, he could have fixed that with eq... maybe not for everyone but very powerful features!

    So testing the Buchardt A10 without taking a direct digital signal in. Converting from digital to analogue and getting the speaker to convert to digital for DSP does not seems the best use case. Great when your source is analogue, a reel to reel or LP but must suffer something in the multiple conversions when the source is already digital.
    A benefit from Buchardt is the return policy. You can test them out at home, get the high level of support if needed and make your mind up with no pressure. If you don't like them you return them and get the A700.
    What is often missed is that the electronics can be removed and replaced by the user. So if it does fail, as most amplifiers will sometime you only have to send off the box of electronics, not the full speaker. Potentially this also means if WiSA is replaced or other changes in DACs you can get an upgrade without having to replace the whole system. Just as you can with separates.

    So basically based on Steve, these speakers are "gorgeous", "amazing" "cool" "percussive" "incredible" from a "really small speaker" and when listening to one of his favourite Bob Dylan tracks, the A10 let him have a good time with it. Wow. Can't wait for my pair. Mads is working some magic over in Denmark. Thank you Steve for a really lovely personal and explorative review. Always appreciated.

      Well ... long before the A10 you know, there was a Radio Shack speaker known as the Realistic Minimus-11 and it had superb bass using its own, Hitachi made System Eeven receiver, the STA-11 that had what we called 'a sub-bass excavator' - something like Loudness, or as harman/kardon called it in the 1970s, 'Contour' ... only the excavator boosted up to +12dB in the lower frequencies, so much more than Loudness. These were 8-ohm speakers but only 86dB SPL, for 1 watt. These are awesome speakers at a low price as found on internet auctions.

    So far I spent more than $25.000 on equipment, and have a lot of friends who spent even more, $40.000 - $50.000 on gears, and we are always in doubt did we chose the best combination, other words a did we find the great synergy between separates . I am in this hobby for decades and somehow getting full of manufacturer’s B/S and really thinking on to get rid of separates and give a try to active speakers. P.S I already have S400 MK2, but they’re not great match with my $10.000 power amp in pure A class :) but they work much better with $4.000 power amp in A/B class 😊

    Thanks for this great review again, but Steve, though interesting to use your preamp.. I think it would have been great to use these speakers as they are meant to be used: in Wifi mode, and see what the result is. I use analog, but I can understand that someone can build an all digital ( up to the speakers drivers..) system, and that makes sense equally. Otherwise, it's a great review. I think I'd lean toward the passive version as well, but that's a matter of taste. It's nice to have the choice.

    I enjoyed Steve's analysis of the differences between active and passive speakers in this video. I've had years of experience listening to excellent active speakers in a studio situation-mostly Genelecs. But I do prefer and mix though passive speakers because I find them to have more sonic depth and musicality. On the technical side, I do believe active speakers seem to compress sound making music sound flatter with less dimensionality. It is probably more useful for engineers when tracking to use active speakers for the increased precision and detail (they are good for hearing flaws in the recording) but for the average serious listener, I would certainly recommend a high quality amplifier paired with passive speakers to get the most enjoyable listening experience.

    You missed the point of the DSP built into the system which is that it can be tuned to exactly replicate any sound stage from any other speaker. The A10 represents the beginning of the end for hifi separate systems. Those two boxes and a hidden streaming box can literally meet all your listening needs. It actually is the universal speaker, you just haven’t realised it yet!

    I have a small room (approx. 10'x13") and would like to get as much low frequency information as is practically possible during playback. Current system is:
    Esoteric K-01xd cd player
    Esoteric C-02 preamplifier
    Auralic G1 streamer
    Buckeye ET 7040 SA mono block amplifiers
    WATT Puppy 7 speakers
    Many recordings sound great with this system in the small room, but it's sometimes seems that this is too much for the room to handle. The A10 speakers w/their on board amps would take up A LOT less space and cost a small fraction of what's currently in the room. Curious about what sort of trade offs might be heard by going with an pair of A-10 speakers.

Unfortunately they were shaking the house to bits and we ended up trying out some Townshend Audio podiums under the the speakers-it is a two man job!
      The improvement in performance was amazing. Decoupling off the wooden floor immediately stopped all the floor, room, building resonances. But, more importantly, the bass was faster, tighter, more layered and textured. The mids were more defined, voices popped more and the highs were sweeter and cleaner. And the soundstage just expanded in all dimensions. We were very impressed- l already use the speaker bars myself on more modest speakers to great effect-and happier downstairs neighbours. If you get the chance give them a try-I think you'll be surprised how much more the B&W's have to give....Have fun!

      Not the same feature set, even though they might be for your usage. A10 will scale up to surround using WiSA in a 5.1 or 7.1 set up. B&W Formation Duo will not work with video sources, latency issues, can not be paired up with Bar, Bass and Flex for surround.
      Buchardt direct to customer means that they sell for about 30% less than through a dealer net work and would then be priced higher than the Duo. If you are only interested in stereo and only in audio then only you could decide with your own ears. In isolation I doubt that ether would disappoint.

    This brings a second point, with these highly integrated solutions, with no possibility of substitution, how does the audiophile determine what is causing their like or dislike of the sound? In other words, how do you smartly move on from the A10 if you feel the need?

    • @geraldmcmullon2465

      The master tunings give a lot of scope for tweaking.
      Do you think that you can find a magic combination of preamp, DAC, power amp and passive speakers to tweak better than the design engineer in the lab who controls the circuit design, the software and every part of the design to get the best out of the speaker?
      Even if you have a dealer shop full of hundreds of alternatives it would drive you crazy finding that tiny tweak if it was even possible.
      Only "big" jumps in cost get those clear improvements but the 80:20 rule hits hard. Sure you can pick up difference easily but better for all the music choices, at the same price range, is another thing.

      The A700's are floorstanders but with their previous technology and the sound signature of the smaller A500's is exactly the same as that of the A700's. The A700's can just go louder.
      I am sure they will make a floorstanding version of the A10 not long from now, but that most likely won't sound better, it just can go louder than the A10.
      In multiple reviews people say that these things have the best bass they have ever heard of a speaker in this size, or in any size for that matter.
      I haven't heard them myself yet but I am more than enthousiastic to buy a set!

    • @vtkz
      @vtkz 10 месяцев назад +6

      because larger speaker are not solving problems and def not sound better. It always matter what gear you use. Booksehlfs / Compact + Subwoofers & DSP are the way to get the cleanest and best controlled lowend. The Midrange & Tweeter plays in most cases on the same internal volumen in Floorstanders. Of course they have more Bass (internal voume) but with subwoofers you can get a way better result + youve way better control over the lowend (roommodes). And when you do a lowcut between 80-100 Hz, why buying a floorstander

    • @keplermission
      @keplermission 10 месяцев назад

      More or less distortion = subwoofers (more) versus woofers (less distortion). The small speaker with deep bass is called long excursion and the cone moves twice as far out only, as it approaches the end stop, the sound is muted quickly, so as Steve says they don't sound totally convincing compared to true woofers (but sub woofers are higher in distortion). The Realistic Minimus-7 woofer has always been cited as you know a 'Long Throw' design and strange because Radio Shack used to have Hobbyist speaker parts catalog with all the best stuff at a knock-down-price and a gold basket 1022A version of the Minimus-7 1218 woofer but only 55Hz-6KHz with 84dB SPL at 8 ohms. So you know that was THE BEST Minimus-7 woofer version and only 84dB SPL. But these are great speakers for small rooms.

      @@MarcelNL Some report that a two way speaker sounds better than larger three way speakers. The more drive units the better the electronics has to be to control them, or at least becomes more complex. I have floor standing three way active speakers and am used to that arrangement - I am biased.
      Buchardts are 2.5 or three way depending on the master tunings used. The A700 on paper have a lower bass than A500 so not only louder but deeper. Many people do not want floor stand speakers to dominate their living rooms even if on a stand bookshelf speakers take up the same room.
      There are few reviews that compare Buchardt speakers with similar or larger floor standing speakers. One RUclips review set up €15,000 floor standing speakers which simply knocked everything out of the way but the A500 was well compared to similar sized speakers.

    • @MarcelNL
      @MarcelNL 10 месяцев назад

      But did the Buchardts also knock bigger ones out of the way? Similar to those big floorstanders, or only speakers of their own size?
      BTW I have had 4-way floorstanders with 200 watt active woofers. I absolutely loved those but they only went down to 32Hz and I really missed the deepest bass in them.

But here’s the hitch - when they start talkin' 'bout how this set of cans or that fancy speaker sounds, it's all tangled up in their personal reckonin's and feelings. Yes, siree, it's as subjective as sweet tea recipes at a state fair! Now, on the flip side like a catfish on a hot skillet, you got them reviewers measurin' sound more scientifically, diggin' deep into them frequencies and decibels like they’re prospectin' for audio gold! They ain’t swayed by the siren call of fancy brands or the smooth talk of pricey tags. Nope, they stick to the cold, hard facts, as unyielding as a granny's pound cake! Their tools? More precise than a moonshiner’s still! They measure all them peaks and valleys in the sound, flatter than a pancake on a Sunday mornin'! And why, you might ask, does this matter more than a possum in a pickle jar? Well, darlin', it's 'cause when you're investin' your hard-earned greenbacks, you want the true-blue, no-nonsense, objective truth. You want measurements you can trust clearer than the water in a mountain stream, not just how somethin' tickles someone’s fancy or ruffles their feathers. That way, you know you're gettin' the real deal, as solid as a handshake in the olden days. Yeehaw! 🤠

    • @geraldmcmullon2465
      @geraldmcmullon2465 10 месяцев назад

      The Buchardt are DPS active speakers. The Klipsch are powered speakers with all the electronics in one of the speakers, no active crossover, which is partly why they can be cheaper. The master tunings and DSP are not the same level. Klipsch are using HDMI and wifi. My limited experience with WiSA and wifi on Beolab 28 speakers is that WiSA is delivering orders of magnitude better sound than over wi-fi. I don't understand why that should be but as far as my set up it is. WiSA is in 6GHz with 5ms latency and wi-fi on the same 5GHz as phone, tablet, laptop and other speakers.
      34-25kHz +/- 3dB is not the same as 28 - 40.000 Hz +/- 1.5dB (can change with Mastertunings)
      I have no doubt that the Nines will offer a great performance. Only you can decide if any difference you can hear is worth the cost. Small improvements often come with exponential price increases.

Nothing sucks the soul out of music more than a crappy looking cheaply produced passive crossover. Buchardt designs have superior passive crossovers, so why does Buchardt invest so heavily in active speakers, I’m thinking Buchardt understands the limits of passive crossovers all too well, so what makes the A10 stand out, is it the drivers, the class D amplifiers, nope it’s the signal processing!
