Something else falls off the cliff. Stick handling my way through building this tiny cabin.

  • I suppose this video is an accurate description of the reality of this process for me. A whole lotta time spent doing something, but getting nothing done. I thought my next plan would be to build/extend the little back deck, but not only did my saw fall down the cliff, I kinda realized that the deck will be higher up the back wall than I imagined, which will make my ability to work on the back wall really difficult.
I filmed this over 2 days back to back, basically just getting materials out there and down the cliff. It's disappointing that I didn't get much of anything done, and a good chunk of my working hours on day two was spent trying to find my saw. (sigh).
But I must carry on, and stick handle my way through this build, taking things as they come. One way or another it'll get built!
I know people in the past have suggested a french drain for my back wall issue, but I think that would require a whole lot more work than I'm willing to invest in. I want something really simple, using materials I kinda have on hand, as my thought (and I could be wrong about this) is that having a reasonable sized deck there will greatly reduce the material drifting towards the back wall of the cabin. No? 😬
Anyway - this next week I will tackle getting a portion of the back wall done, maybe do the deck, or maybe keep on with insulation/windows and doing something about that annoying Tyvek 🤪
Either way, I'll see you out there again in the next video!
    M 💕
(We have Starlink internet at home, but it's still really slow and this video took a long time - sorry for the delay 😬)

Great work M. You are such a grafter, really admirable how stuck in you get to to manual labour. I realise how far along you are and how much stuff you don't need to get down to the cabin. But I had a thought. Is it possible to build a tower type structure at the top end of the rope system to allow you to put stuff straight onto it from the road. Save your back a huge amount. Also I just wish I was there doing that work in that incredible place. Apologies if the suggestion seems stupid, in anyway 😊

A couple of comments as a builder: spray paint all sides of your tools(you dont want to lose)with orange or pink, it might look ridiculous, but you will see them when dropped.
Second, determine the height difference between your storage shed and main cabin deck for later reference for stairs, if needed. Third, water proof the back of cabin, then build a type of French Drain that would be under the deck.
*My thought is put the stairs/transition from the upper cabin away from the back of the lower cabin, there isnt enough room. **Advil & Tylenol are my go to friends! 😎

Michy, All the setbacks you and Steve experienced trying to get Pelagic home have hopefully helped to make this deck setback tolerable. If only your saw would sing and howl like dear Clyde. All tools should be tagged with orange in case the trip off. My wonderful late husband bought me a Camo chainsaw and I was forever losing it in plain sight. On the bright side your tailbone bruise is helping you develop a superb "Sumo" squat with deep knee bends and perfect posture for any future bear wrestling you might get into. Love how you stopped to graze on your quest for the wayward saw.

Nice to see you out in the colourful shorts out again. Lots of great shots of your injured area and I kept looking closely as I was concerned that you might injure yourself more doing all that bending over and lifting. 😁. As far as the drainage goes, it is a small area so you could consider digging a trench by hand and put in a French drain and vent it downhill making sure the drain is below grade. Not a big job and definitely will keep water away from the foundations of the cabin. After it is all in just build your deck over it all. Lovely to see you on the mend ❤️‍🩹..

Hi Michele… Man you’re working your as* off !!! That’s a lot of work for two people let alone yourself.. I’ll put in my two cents first on the back of the cabin you have the right idea dig that trench out and put rock in there and just get a corrugated piece of plastic pipe kind of like a French drain and cover it up. That’ll keep that water from building up against the side of your cabin. Second, can you put like a mesh net or maybe even a fence something simple and spread it long ways across the front of your cabin, that may catch anything that rolls down that hill. Save you a lot of time walking all the way down looking for it just an idea enjoyed your video and you look beautiful as always.❤

I would use a slotted plastic pipe (Novaflo) around 3") along the back covered with some nylon cloth to keep some of the dirt out and then cover with small rocks. Check your fall with a level so water heads one way or the other. As you are always carrying gear when descending down those wooden steps to your top winching area, I think some benching or a few more steps would be a good idea beyond that last step. Also attaching chicken wire mesh to the wooden steps would assist with any slipping issues. its good to take some preventative measures rather than deal with future injuries. Loved the boat trip episodes and looking forward to more.

Finish up as much as you can on the back wall before you build the deck in your way. If you can dig a diversion ditch just up hill from the deck. A ditch will help keep water from washing down dirt and debris from filling up the low area directly behind the cabin. Take care of your back. Thanks for the episode.

Michy, try erecting a temporary 'construction net' just around the cabin below by 10-20ft. Staked to the ground, supported by strong enough paracord to halt a falling person, so that if you drop any more things, ie. tools, lumber, yourself... it will arrest the fall and you don't have to search down there. BTW, can you try to use your drone to go look down the hill for your saw? At least the Ryobi is neon green.

Your tenacity is just incredible. Extremely hard work and your doing it mostly alone.
Watching you figure out solutions to something that’s not easy is a very special attribute you have. Bravo to you and your special projects.
Take it easy and don’t get yourself in a bind. You’re a special woman with an incredible array of skills😅

Thank you! I’m feeling vulnerable because of my ‘lack of organization’ and working hard but getting nowhere show. It’s hard to show all aspects of the reality of this build, especially when it’s a small percentage of my life in the grand scheme of things. (I wish I had more time to spend on it, both mentally and physically).
What do I take away from this? The next cabin build is going to be at our home property! 😂

Welcome back Michelle. The 'drainage trough' .... if you were to take scraps (or good pieces) of Tyvek and staple them to the wall and lay them in the trench/trough and then back fill with small rocks, your drainage would take care of everything and take water completely away from the building or beneath the building. Inexpensive and relatively easy and materials are all on hand. Talk to Sean if he's still hanging out in the woods nearby? Best of luck.

It’s great to see you back at your mountain cabin !
You look like you are still not moving around as good as you would like to be ! Injuries take time to heal , you are doing well though ! Please be careful up there !

An Idea Michelle, is to use a type of construction fence that is made of material, by staking it in below to catch your tools. Just be careful 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

When you showed the berries my first thought was Elderberry Wine, Elton John song, my second thought was, don’t eat them, Movie Into The Wild, lol. I used to be a truck driver so I know a lot about back pain, Ibuprofen has been a wonder drug for me and ice rather than heat.

I sympathize with trying to keep things going while injured. I'm 2 weeks from hernia surgery and have been trying to get a lot done before I am laid up. I'm not looking forward to being idle in the month of August with so many summer projects pending. Glad to see you are back down at the cabin.

I hate it when I'm working and i lose something and spend the rest of my day looking for it. Sorry you lost you saw. You might need to let you tail bone heal a little bit longer or it will never get well. I hope you had a better night and got so sleep. See in the next one. Have a wonderful week.

Well, holy crap, you've got some grit fighting through the pain. At least the injury forced you to lift with perfect form? Anyhow, really good call on pausing the deck build until you address the rear siding first. Cheers from Northern California

That area you were digging, you could fill with gravel. Just go get bags of "gravel" from home depot, Menards, Lowe's, etc any home improvement store. A few bags to fill that gap.

    "And the beat goes on."
Working through the pain in your tailbone is commendable. I might have said the heck with it and headed home.
Was thinking it would be best getting the backside of the cabin done first then concentrate on that drainage ditch below. Also, too the deck could be same level as cliff cabin (the one you're working on) and you could have steps dropping down from the shed cabin to meet the deck which would be a couple inches above the ground if that makes sense.
You need to lay in a tub of epsom salts for that back for an hour.
Got to thinking too maybe setting up a section of nursery cloth below the cliff cabin to act like a catch all incase something bounces down the cliff face again.
