- The video details what we paid for an extensive makeover of our Nordhavn 62 at RAM Marina in Rio Dulce, Guatemala. We explain the work, set out the costs and also chat about being there for 3 months. This all took place in Summer 2022. The work took place in RAM Marina and Yacht Club, Rio Dulce, Guatemala and we had a very positive experience. Follow us on RUclips or www.mvkariwa.com or Instagram.. mv_kariwa_n62
Wow huge difference in price Frank. Noted here, may pick your brain for future projects. Truly enjoying watching your videos. You and Leslie are just doing an awesome job. 🎊
The boat looks amazing, great video explaining costs and exactly what you had done over....
Glad you liked it! Thank you for your comments.
Don't know where you were for Christmas but we had 31 degrees on Christmas in the Canaveral area and sleet over the northern part of the whole county the day after Christmas. It is the 30th now and warmed up to the mid 70's and supposed to get warmer by New Years. Have fun. If I knew that you were in Canaveral I would love to come see the boat. Have a blessed 2023 and many more years.
Carl, if we come back up to Canaveral we will let you know. We were in West Palm Beach for Christmas.
Thanks for sharing. Boat looks great. Love your videos
My favorite Nordhavn - love the layout - and this video was super helpful for future planning purposes. We are about 5 years out from purchasing, but it’s great to know more about what it would take to make one look this great!
Glad you liked it. It is the most seaworthy in our opinion!!
Wow that’s awesome price and like I said before she is absolutely beautiful what a great decision to have this done
The headliner work...excellent!!
I love the color of the hull. It goes great with the rest of the colors on the boat!
Thank you we like it also
It would have been worth the money just for the cruise experience alone, I think. Love the new look , she is brand new again. Merry Christmas and have a great New Year.
I totally agree! The experience was a great part.
Kariwa will be the talk at all of the marinas and ports that you visit. You know....like the talk of town. 😁 Glad that you saved massive amounts of moolah in getting Kariwa looking beautiful in Rio Dulce, Guatemala.
I hope so!
Fantastic job! Love the color and all the valuable details. Thank you both. We may be following your 'footsteps'!
Thanks Celeste, will be happy to provide more data when the time comes.
Thank you for doing this. It is eye opening to see the cost difference. The color looks great.
We were also very surprised in the costs differences... but obviously happy.
New subscriber here. Wow! What a machine! And what an adventure to the Rio Dulce! Thanks for sharing and for your openness on upgrade costs! Cheers!
Welcome
The color looks great! Thanks for the cost breakdown, as so many never provide it.
Happy Holidays to you both!
The boat looks awesome! The video was fantastic and I appreciated the honesty about the costs involved.
And yes, I’m still ‘interested’!
Glad you enjoyed it Robert. You'll be the first to know!
People having fun on a wonderful 62
It’s an underrated skill to be able to find good quality at low cost. When you have a boat, and need to upkeep it for a long and fruitful existence as a live-aboard, this is perhaps the most important skill to master, apart from safe navigation. You’ve done an incredible job with Kariwa; she looks amazing! Congrats and well done to your both.
Thanks Bjorn! Allows us to budget for other things, no point wasting money.
Looks amazing .....great work !
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic presentation. Very informative. Finished boat looks great. 👍👌😁
Thank you! 👍
It looks great. Good job.
So cool! And great results!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing the actual numbers, great to see the comparison. After having substantial work done on 2 different boats in Lauderdale and Key West I can attest to the brutal repair bills stateside.
Thanks for watching!
Really great colors!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great Video and lots of good info ;) Well put together.
Thanks James, glad you liked it! ;)
I would suggest that as long as you two are both happy with the quality and cost of the work done that is all that matters. Looking at her as closely as I can from the video she looks pretty darn sweet to me - happy cruising .........
Maybe we will do a new close in depth view of the whole boat.
@@MVKariwaN62 That would be very interesting. There are not that many proper videos of the N62 both at sea and on the dock.
I like the colors 🦜
I love the colour, and the canvas looks awesome. As I'm sure you got quotes from us based boat yards, we're you sceptical about the quality of work you were going to receive when you compared prices..I think your experience is going to influence a lot of owners to do similar. Great job
We did have some quotes on USA work. We did some research down in Rio, and the materials were all USA sourced. It is not always possible or practical to go down there, but I have been advising a bunch of owners who have asked questions.
thank you very much for this information/ my wife and i are currently looking at a N62.
Lets us know if you have any questions on N62's as well. We believe it is best sea keeping trawler.
Be happy to help with any questions on N62's!
@MV Kariwa Nordhavn 62 thank you for your response. We have been seriously looking into 62's for about 6 months. The vessel we are considering is a later model , with a stern bussel. Something I am not a big fan of. I would rather it was a swim step. From what I have read and inquired about with other owners , the bussel can affect performance in following seas. I personally have never understood why someone would want something submerged after the transom. Just my opinion. If you need more space buy a bigger boat or downsize your belongings to fit. History has proven giant swim grids and such , can be ripped off , and sink boats in large seas. Or seas at just the wrong angle over periods of time.
I enjoy your videos. Thank you both for taking the time to give us a sneak peak into your travels. I believe we will be moving forward on this 62 soon
@@mikefrancis9707 good luck with plans and let us know if you have any questions … I know of Island Greeter that’s for sale… the others I know of are older.
Reach out to James Knight if you need some sage advice on buying any 62
You had all this work done well over a year ago, I'm curious to know how it all held up. Are you still happy with the quality and durability of the work?
Thank you for a wonderful video covering the cost. Could you explain a little more about what you consider "Project Managing" and what that would entail. Once again as I stated in the reveal video Kariwa turned out Breathtakingly Beautiful.
What mean is that you really need to be present while the work is going on. Some cruisers come to the Rio and then leave for home for 6 weeks. They come back expecting to see the finished article and the everything done properly.
Often your work is not prioritized if you are not there. Maybe corners are cut, or something is missed. You do not need to be there all the time, we did leave for 2 days on one occasion, but timed it for when things were quieter.
The overpriced boat yards are going to not be happy. You are smart cruisers. Kudos! Looks great!!
Got to balance the budget!
Did you feel safe staying there? If you needed healthcare were the medical facilities up to par?
Is that an Awlgrip color? I had a Lyman Morse which the previous owner had painted a similar color.
Empress Blue Awlgrip
Nice video.
Thanks!
What colour had you planned originally?
Bahama Blue
Do you have the name, number, etc. of the company you used?
Absolutely stunning color and amazing work and price. This is now one of my favorite Nordhavns. Well done sir!
Thank you kindly!
Can I ask you which boatyard did you use and who painted your boat, if you don’t mind sharing
As is stated in video RAM Marine. They painted the boat.
Looks great guys! Did you guys get a chance to try any Rum while you were in Guatemala, I heard it’s pretty good down there?
Ha ha!
Excellent report and the results are very nice. I will be looking into this further. Can you share contact info for the yard? Also, what is the maximum draft one can get over the bar? Can I get 8’ if we plan the tides properly?

The bar is around 5ft 9", then you have to factor the tide. You can get 8ft if you time it right, and, also have a guide boat. The boat costs around $100. They will also attach a line and tow assist. The bottom is sand and mud and we ploughed through it. It is a common thing to do. Sailboats of 9ft have gone through.
Would love a chance to purchase your boat if and when you are ready to sell.
Where are you based?
Literally just saw this boat near my anchorage an hour ago😂
Which boat were you?
Summer wind it’s a SV
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
The colour is incredible. And then some. Too dark and she would appear overly industrial. Too light and she might seem to be a lightweight inland cruise with wannabe aspirations. This shade is both gorgeous and seaworthy, playing up her lovely lines in a most impeccably nuanced manner. I love the kind of design that has people feeling good when they see something even if they can’t quite figure out how the magic works.
Thank you so much for your comments, we agree!!
