- Join Linda and Steve Dashew aboard the FPB 78 - 1 Cochise on a 7500 mile/12,070 kilometer record setting voyage, averaging 10 knots from Fiji to Panama against the winds and current, that has changed the prospects of cruising forever. Their 5450 mile/8770 kilometer leg, without a fuel stop, is the longest ever undertaken by a small motor yacht. You will be aboard as they thread their way through some of the most beautiful and navigationally dangerous waters on this planet. The Dashews will show you how they deal with severe thunder squalls, use modern navigation electronics, and catch fish on a state of the art meat line. You will hear stories of their past visits through the South Pacific, make a brief stop at exquisite Fatu Hiva, and learn how they do all of this in extreme comfort.
Thats pretty cool not just the boat but the couple still doing what they love . they win the award for living the good life.
This is my dream. Bless you who get to enjoy this.
I am deeply touched by the story of the Dashews. It is a Love story of 2 people and their love of the sea. I would entrust my life with their boats.
Thank you for this video! I can't afford a yacht myself, so the way the video was shot really made me feel like I was there crossing the Pacific. Awesome images!
Thanks for the comment , Dan.
Beautiful video, editing perfect. You two have been my heroes since my first sail boat. Now in my 80,s I wish I had the money to own something as great as this boat. Bless you and your family.
I have circumnavigated snd been to all of these spots in the video- however to do it again in a vessel like this has forced me to start buying lottery tickets once more/ what an incredible creation built on experience!
Hello from Colombia. Your story over the years is beautiful. I don't know much about boats, but my boyfriend who is from America has shown me several videos of your journey and I was really amazed. Post: Your bit is the boat of the dreams of my dukce boyfriend.Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences
Beautifully done video. The boat is a dream. And to think of the incredible hardships the first European sailors had to endure crossing the Pacific.
I think I'm starting to understand the idea behind the design. Long narrow bow that pierces the waves, rather than rising over them. An extended stern tail to assist in getting speed from a following sea safely. Mind you I'm glossing over the years of details and effort in that description. Exposed aluminum everywhere, lack of maintenance. You're sailing who needs that grief? The lack of excessive cabin space compared to length, so as to keep the center of gravity low, unlike most motor yachts that stuff cabin space everywhere possible, so you end up with a wallowing cow. Simple clean living space, high tech, high quality, yet not distracting from the view outside. After all that's why you're there. Every possible piece and part done to make extended cruising safe and comfortable. Am I close?
I must say this boat is my favorite yacht of yours, mostly because of the enclosed matrix deck. I think that adds majorly to it's looks and livability.
Confession time, I'm an avowed landlubber who takes showers because tubs have deep water. My sole time on the ocean has been on the ferry to Vancouver Island. Please excuse the lack of proper terminology. What you have done interest me. Thank you for the videos. Doug
The hull form is offshore supply/crew vessel, there are similar designs in Netherlands yes the vessel is very speedy that’s way none interior elements..
Howdy Nuts:
You are very close. The distribution of interior volume is based on the following:
1-Keeping living areas as close to the motion center as possible for comfort and better rest at sea.
2-Systems within the engine room and elsewhere installed in such a manner that they are easily accessible for inspection and maintenance.
3-Room for supplies, and loose equipment so that it can be stored in an orderly, easily retrieved manner.
Regarding the waterline length, this is a benefit in terms of reduced drag, and allows shaping the hull so that it is more easily steered compared to a shorter, fatter waterline design.
This is the best boat yacht I have ever seen. Exactly confortable the way it should be. Thanks to have taken the time to build it and please build more of the same I want to buy one
Truly enjoyed this voyage and look forward to viewing even more!
As a former Sailor in the U.S. Navy I have served aboard two Nuclear Aircraft Carriers and one Fast Frigget. I have been watching the FPB RUclips videos for a couple of years with a smile on my face. Thank you for sharing!!
Adventurous spirits living and learning as we go. Thank you for teaching me.
Beautiful guys, just beautiful. All of it, people, ship, photos, information, and Sarah's music. Her music brought me back to my time in the coffee houses in Toronto's Yorkville { The Village } back in the 60's. Thanks for your post folks.
What a cool compliment, thank you! :)
I hope someone can take your lead and continue producing these wonderful yachts. They have such an elegance but also being so raw. Thank you for this wonderful video and Sue's music is so soothing. Linda and Steve, I hope you have many wonderful years of retirement. Thank you again and calm seas
I greatly appreciate your video. My dear uncle Vic, who passed two years ago was a cruiser. I am a just a day sailor who never quite understood his passion for voyaging for, literally, years at a time. Your insight into the details has made his passion clearer. Thank you.
Thank You so much for sharing this beauty, true freedom true love! GOD BLESS YOU
Superb..as usual. Thank you for the wanderlust you create in all your yachting, filming, story telling and musical endeavors. Just fantastic...
Watch "FlemingYachts" ,very good videos about yachting and visiting places.
Superb recommendation it also shows how good the fpb is in motion but the travel and photography is stunning from Tony flemming
God bless you all. Thank you for your informative journey
Glad you enjoyed it!
What an incredible journey. I am so envious. Fair winds and following seas!
Kudos Sarah! I really appricate all your time and work on your videos. Be happy, be safe
I am absolutely impressed! Fantastic chronicle of your voyage. And that ship of yours, impressive!
I hope all those who can live like this know how fortunate they are compared to us peasants.
I doubt it. The internet has given the world the ability to see how the other half lives. Before the internet there was ignorance, now we see how unequal the world really is.
I don't think of this wasteful, environmentally disastrous lifestyle as at all "fortunate." For a couple who claim to love the sea yet still spend a tankage budget of "4700 usable gallons of diesel fuel" in order to prove that their latest design can go to windward (all while making a sales video - let's call this what it is), is the height of hypocrisy. The Dashews are just another profligate luxury brand, nothing less, and certainly nothing more. Let's call them the Kardashians of the sea.
This video's "yacht" has long been supplanted. They're currently selling 97 footers.....motorboats that even more than this look like military patrol vessels. The Dashews call it a "battle-worthy look."
@@ericfermin8347 I don’t want an equal world. It’s a utopian nonsense and a total nightmare.
Just an end to abject poverty would suffice imo.
Frankly Steve deserves his success. Genius will out. (And even freakin’ Fidel Castro liked his boats.)
@Eric Fermin instead of being jealous why don't you go make your own fortune. Steve and his Dad both made their money through inventing. Stanley came up with a bunch of patents in various industries. Steve came up with several in the concrete construction industry then turned his hand to yacht design. Both earned their money.
Your video reminds me that I can find peace of mind someday. Thank you and good luck with everything.
I just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed the voyage. Out of all the circumnavigation I watch from other cruisers, this truly has been my favorite. May God bless you.
Thank you for inspiring us! That's serious cruising
WOW! What a sensational ship ! Great voyage as well...…… BRAVO!
Amazing video and what a amazing little ship. In love with it
Hi Steve & Linda, what a magnificent yacht!!! I plan to travel along with you on the awesome journey. Thanks for sharing. Pat Schmidt Hall(Jim's sister)
You take the path less trod. What a wonderful story.
I don't know why RUclips recommended your channel today, but you showed me a new way of approaching sailing around the world. The Matrix deck is what I've been looking for the whole time.
Amen
@@TRINITY-ks6nw But unfortunately I can't afford it
@@krisqk4589 you could passage as crew
It has provisions for that
I was looking for FPB97 and found you guys. Extremely beautiful voyage and wonderful and reliable boat you have. I really enjoyed the video.
I love your channel I just found out through RUclips searching congratulation on this awesome boat you have that is a Dreamboat to live aboard for life.
You guys are the few people in the world that have something like this small yacht that you can live aboard go from long distances.
I just described hoping to see more new videos thank you for sharing.⚓⛵👍
Great vid especially the yatch! Amazing and good job!!!!!
Great video
Just Love it
keep them coming please
Wow this was amazing journey ! I am building currently a completely electric boat i’m hoping to do the same route but from Panama to New Zealand stopping in French Polynesia Nice boat 👍
That sounds amazing. Are you vlogging your build? I would love to see that.
I am in love with your hull designs. It just makes sense and they look beautiful. What a pity I will never own one.
Same here! I chartered a 47 footer in the Caribbean once, but my wife didn't care for it. She would never allow the family to have a nice boat, much less a very expensive one like this.
What a beautiful yacht. Perfect really.
You set the standards and I wish you more voyages. Thank you for sharing what pretty much all of us, never will experience. Absolutely mind bending the luxury you enjoy.
Thanks for sharing. Really entertaining and interesting.
Excellent video, thank you
This was amazing!! What a life!!!
GREAT VID!!!! Thank you for sharing.
What a trip! Marvelous .
Amazing ship, thank you
Wonderful video. Amazing boat🎉.
What a “Totally Cool Ship”!! I have a sense of being safe!
Probably should've made four separate videos out of this video. One about this trip, one about the boat design, one about your oceanic experience and history and one about the modifications you made and why.
I am very jealous! My dream... Your daughters voice is incredible by the way!
Thanks, Kevin.
I really loved the photo at 3:22....
Great video.
Love this channel....
Very interesting and informative well made video thank you.
This would be super fun
Brilliant dashew design thank you for sharing superb
This is just awesome I'm 30 now and my dream is to buy a sailing boat rather than a house in the next 10years nothing seems more freeing than sails on your 'house' and following the wind. Wish I I could design/build my own, but I think with my lack of knowledge a lightly damaged hurricane boat and doing the repairs myself is the best option.
Our suggestion is to go early rather than waiting until you have saved sufficiently for a larger fancier yacht. The older you get the more tied down you become, the harder it is to truly break free.
@@DashewOffshore thanks I'll take that to heart :)
This is a ridiculous statement, but if win the lottery, this is what I'd buy. Of all the boats I've seen, these are my favorites. I like the Bering boats a lot, as well as some other real explorer boats, but these are just on a different level. So, win the lottery, go to nautical school, apprentice on a boat (I'm not a sailer) and buy one of these.... I think that's all I need to do. Need to start buying lottery tickets.
Side note, the pictures they take are beautiful.
great video and congratulations on your adventures and design achievements!
wauw you make a dream real !
How much was this boat out of interest?
idiot
Great yacht
Amazing !
What a dream..👌
This was wonderful
Some cracking photos
Is Sarah, the singer your daughter? She has a beautiful voice. Seriously! I am sure you are very proud. Does music run in your family? The use of T.V.s as moniters is incredible, as is the amount and sizes of windows. This is a truly epic build. I am sure the change to motor sailing, from purely wind has been a nice change of pace. We can't keep running around 30 degree decks, pulling sail all our lives! Lol!! Thank you for posting such a pleasurable video.
Thanks for the comments Solo: Linda has a lovely voice, mine is more related to frogs. But then I did learn how to play three songs on the guitar a long time ago. So, Sarah;s musical talent does not come from my end of the gene pool.
@@DashewOffshore You got me! I love it.
Excellent vid ya'll.
than ks for the vid excellent design concept , waiting for the next long distance cruise you have in mind
Wow epic journey!
Lovely boat my only negative is no windows in the staterooms,
What an adventure!
Massive boat .
Just a thought - As I really love the music, it would be nice if you could do a mix with sailing and music only. Love to walk through my lounge room (on land) and see sea.... sea see lol
So relaxing........
Amazing Yacht! Do you sell the plans to anyone who wanted to construct a Yacht similar of yours? thanks
This boat has a real starship enterprise vibe
I’m no sailor but less than 0.8 gallons/nm seems very impressive for a boat this size.
Great to watch…..Did you say “dismember” a fish? 😅
I did this trip in 1976 on a 60,000 ton ship with my mates , two shearers from SA , a stockmen from Coonamble & me & my mate from Dubbo , we were pissed as a cricket until we hit America who would think a ship that big would run out of grog ??
These are the only boats I’ve seen built with a rational idea of how navigation should be done. A 50” 4K TV is $300! Why are people using 12”
Displays for navigation these days? (And why do they cost so much?)
Love to understand what you did to get these displays hooked up and set up your matrix deck.
The connection is easy, as long as there is an HDMI output from the marine electronics. The Maretron N2K data system, and our Simrad nav gear both have HDMI outputs. Same with the FLIR video set up with external and engine room cameras.
Initially we used standard (inexpensive) articulating arm wall mounts on the TV scree, bolted to the surrounding structure. After numerous experiments we settled on locations, and then switched to simple single axis horizontally rotating frames. These have a pipe across the top that serves as a handrail.
We use several splitters in the systems so that we can choose the display data on more than one screen, which makes changing info presentation as a simple as selecting a different source.
A couple of key things to watch: use only the best quality, high speed HDMI cables. We had numerous early problems traced to cable QC.
Label power cords from TVs and both ends of HDMI cables, and be sure to observe the correct directional connection of the HDMIs.
Allowing for 10- to 20 degrees of tilt will make it easier to use the TVs through a wider range of sun glare conditions.
DashewOffshore Thank you do much for the reply and the advice!
Incredible story and yacht.
If you rich people only knew how lucky you all are!!!
I would love to know how to set up the monitor with the simrad wired remote. Read all the blog article but unfortunately it didn't go into that. My wife and I watched all your videos and she been asking for a while for a bigger screen and this would surely help. Keep posting these videos my wife is a huge fan.
The Simrad system has an N2K network to which various accessories connect. There are several different controllers that you can use. The big screen TVs use HDMI output from the Simrad black box. You can also drive the system with a wireless Wifi connection using the Simrad app.
Do you use a sea anchor to wait out foul weather ?
Assuming Diesel fuel : US$3.04/gallon. Therefore : 3.04 x 4700 gallons equal to US$14,288. The cost only for fuel (from Raiatea to Panama not including the total route Fiji to Panama).
At marina’s fuel is usually much higher and in remote areas I bet even more. I wouldn’t doubt the price was closer to $4.00 or $5 per gallon.
The large tanks allow being choosey on quality and price, and typically duty free is available. I think the fuel cost was more like US$2.60/gal and we used just under 6000 gallons for this upwind voyage. If you want to throw in wear on the drive lines we figure TBO on engines and trannys at 25,000 hours although with care twice that is possible. A whole lot of money but less than a fifth the cost of shipping on a freighter. And 1.3rd less than running a large sailing yacht the same distance.
My claimed" that cost only for fuel". ( not cover the whole journey). I don't have to elaborate others cost but for sure in depth, you know the score. Think!
BRAVO GUYS IN LUXERY TRAVEL ON SEA CONGRACIULESEN
Wow I love your boat. What make is it?
Is it possible for a sailboat to take the same route east to west across the pacific?
I have to know, does this design have any inspiration from the voyage of the Idlewild? Started in Canada and circumnavigated via the NW passage. Sailed from South Africa to Australia. Very similar design to George Beuhler’s design. Narrow and light displacement.
17700 litres of diesel at $2/litre. That’s roughly 35K to take the boat to Panama. Not including maintenance cost. I think I’ll stick with a sailboat.
I calculated the fuel expense with a rough guess. Is about $14,000 right?
Great video. What type of yacht is 'Westward' mentioned at the beginning of the video?
The big ketch Win’Son was a 70’ Sparkmans and Stephens motorsailor.
Did you find it hard to leave Fiji? We went there to visit relatives and travelled around a lot. It was difficult to leave
Fiji is a wonderful country, particularly if you are visiting by boat. There are beautiful beaches, clear waters, friendly locals, and always an interesting mix of other cruising yachts. This was our fifth visit, which should tell you something. We could easily have spent six months there. But we were anxious to see what Cochise would do on a long upwind passage.
DashewOffshore I agree we went to Paradise Cove and several other places would have loved to spend a year just sailing around
Hopefully one day I will have enough money to live like that omfg,,, do y’all know how much fuel cost? Or equipment cost on that boat
Join Linda and Steve Dashew aboard the FPB 78 - 1 Only if you could use an old salty sailor who can play a Hell of a blues harp.
Like my favorite, Paul Butterfield.
@@DashewOffshore I CUT MY TEETH ON Paul Buterfield blues
A motorboat. 💖🇲🇨
How about Port Moresby to Shreveport? Compare cultural differences in the crack houses and homeless shelters, in your ocean going Mar-A-Lago. There's even an omelette line!
What kind of motor is on the Cochise? Something powerful like a GE V250?
The FPB 78s are powered by a pair of Deere 6068s delivering 230 HP @ 2300 RPM.
@@DashewOffshore LOL... just kidding there. But, honestly, with the ability to go 12-14 knots sustained which is a smidgen above hull speed for a 78 footer, I'll expect something more powerful like the Catepillar C7.1 with twice that amount of power.
I can’t wait to be a barnacle stuck to the bottom of that boat
Hahaha
life is hard!
I'm not a green or eco.
But 20 tonnes of burned fuel,
isn't it bit too much for cruising few people for few weeks?
(With a great respect for filmmakers)
I know that's insane, less than 1 nm per gallon of fuel. I think man made climate change is a lie but I hope these people aren't out there believing in climate change while living like this video shows.
