  • Doug attempts to learn and play the first campaign of Burning Banners: Rage of the Witch Queen. This is a fantasy war-game published by Compass Games in 2024.
The game features many campaigns, or scenarios, involving six factions. The game is large, lavish and gorgeous to look at.
This scenario is very much a learning game, and I'm not totally across all the rules. I'm sure errors were made, but I had fun attempting to play and shoot this session. I hope you find it useful.
    CHAPTERS:
    00:00 Introduction
    01:57 Overview
    06:40 Starting Builds
    10:30 Oathborn Turn 1
    17:02 Fjordland Turn 1
    22:10 Oathborn Turn 2
    27:48 Fjordland Turn 2
    31:15 Oathborn Turn 3
    35:43 Final Thoughts

Haha so fun! The Oathborn should have had it in the bag. The Miner in The Endless Paths should have besieged Barlas on the lake in the summer, leaving Fjordland only Norstead to build out of. Still, a hard fought game. Sorry you didn’t get to build your Giant 😢. Thank you! -Chris

Thanks, and thanks for an amazing game. Just dipping my toes in the waters. I didn't know whether it would make more sense to mine the gold or take/besiege Barlas. I forgot about the siege rules in the moment. So ... no major rules goofs?

Nothing jumped out at me as far as "goofs" go, just missed opportunities. That comes with more plays. For example: at 27:28 you built an Oathtakers army in Shaded Vale, where it can't quite reach the Freeholders in Zarinbar. A better move might have been to have marched on Zarinbar with the Iron Legion in Fort Gorod, then built a Dragon Slayer (also in Fort Gorod), which has 3 movement points, allowing a second attack on Zarinbar if needed. That's all part of the fun, though. Learning how to use your resources most effectively. Of course the dice can go against you, no matter what you do, but the more bites you can take at the apple, the greater the chance that the odds will fall in your favor eventually! -Chris

Doug - thanks for sharing. Are you just using a handheld camera to shoot this? It came out really nicely. Might try that for some of my games.

Thank you. Yes, it was a very impromptu iPhone 15 Pro Max on 4K held in front of my face. The game looks beautiful which helped 😀

I checked the BGG files section for this game and the Errata pdf didn't mention any changes to starting gold, but, the author does reply to a thread on this matter and says essentially "adjusting startinggold is a great way to balance a scenario". That said, with the miners' ability to mine for income, it seems like the Fjordlanders' extra starting gold is warranted.
Thanks for the video; I am on the fence for this one but it looks gorgeous and a bit fun so I'm leaning in...

Thanks for watching. There is an errata sheet in the box that I checked later in the day, and it does mention the setup card should read "place 10 gold on the playmat" for the Fjordland, instead of "place 1 gold". So it appears the Campaign Book is correct and they do indeed start richer than I played them.
I'm glad I leaned in. At the price point to get it to Australia, it's very much a luxury item, but I'm not regretting it.

The more I watch the less impressed I am with combat; it's so basic. It could really use a few tweaks IMO, like forcing units to retreat, and "attack support". Example, if you have a three units adjacent to an enemy unit, you declare one the primary attacker and use all of his dice, but you also can declare adjacent units as "Support" and use they each add one white die to the combat. Defenders could maybe do the same thing but in doing so they'd have to exhaust/finish their supporting unit(s) for their next turn.

Hi Aces (designer here). Doug is playing with the most basic of basic rules. Combat includes a number of twists, including a variety of abilities and characteristics (none of which featured here): ranged, flying, stealth, regenerate, feral and huge. And that doesn't include the advanced game (Magic, Heroes, Monsters). If you're interested, check out some of the "in play" videos on RUclips to get a feel for the range of possibilities! -Chris
