I live in the Highlands of Scotland and the weather can be very harsh. Temps can regularly drop to minus 12 in winter. Eucalyptus is very fast growing and can grow 6ft / 2m per annum.
Thanks! Do you have any input on this Glacier Eucalyptus i've been seeing around. Says cold heart to -20c. Not sure if it's just a rebranded other type.
Love this video. Video series idea: every year I have to scour RUclips to figure out what can I plant/germinate from seeds now in January, then in February, etc. I think it would be really cool especially since you’re zone 3 if you put out a video series titled what seeds to plant in January, then in February you do one for that month, then the next month, etc. etc. The important thing is to put the month in the title so It’ll stick in people’s minds to search by month! My frustration is that people do these videos, which is great, but I can’t find them again the following year because the title is either too generic and the info is buried, or too plant specific and I’d be watching 1xvideo per plant, lol. It’d also make an awesome playlist.
This video just popped up... good timing as yesterday I was gifted one it arrived with a few brown leaves but over all looks good. Any tips for a beginner to keep my baby alive would be awesome 😊
I found a beautiful beautiful good size Baby Blue E plant at grocery store and a lavender, I trimmed a bit to try to prop definitely coming indoors under lites , in Maine tfs
I have recently discovered your channel. I love all your content. I live in Newfoundland and love all the information. I can't wait for you to do your seed starting for the next season 💖
Eucalyptus is actually a perennial shrub, right? In zone 3, can they be put into dormancy late fall and stored in a cool dark basement? I remember my mom used to over winter geranium that way.
Thanks Kristen for reminding me, I need to plant mine, just received them in the mail. I was hoping to get them in December but I received someone else's order instead of mine.
Grows well in South New Jersey one is growing 10 ft. I think.because in sandy soil with rock.mulch and closest to house gives it more protection . Rarely gets damage if super cold but it recovers. Lucky I got seedlings sold in a flat at a great garden center
Woohoo! What a perfectly timely video. I was thinking of getting some seeds, but was pretty clueless and didn't wan to make the $$$ investment without some knowledge going into it.
We have alpine areas in Australia with snow (and ski resorts 😀👍) and alpine eucalyptus which look completely different to the eucalyptus your trying to grow on this video. Its pretty tree with flowers.
Really informative video! I live in PA and I have a eucalyptus tree behind my house, grown from a little plant. How and when do you think I should prune it? It's almost 4 years old and I could never figure out what works for this plant the best. Thanks :)
FYI, the potted eucalyptus in my greenhouse has seen -15 and it’s doing great so far. They are one-year old plants I started in January 2021. I do plan on bringing them in the house when it gets colder though!
I’m still wondering how you overwinter these. Do you grow them as an annual? Is that enough time to really use them in bouquets as they grow so slow? If you do over winter, do you wrap them or cut them right back?
I grow them as an annual, but you can pot them up and take them indoors over winter. If you don’t have a south facing window, it will need a supplemental light.
Hi! First time eucalyptus grower here. This year i bought seedlings and plantednthem in ground around may sp im deffffffinitely too late. However! Im determinded to start them correctly. So... start seeds in december. Right after starting them, i put them under the light? Do i use my heating pads? And bc we are in a colder state (wisconsin), will i habe to repeat the process every year? If not, any tips on how to preserve the plants over the winter? Thanks!!!
Zone 5b and I sowed 5 on Jan 1. Happy to report I pricked out 4 into their own cells this morning. Hoping to grow in pots on back deck and bring 1 pot inside to overwinter and take cuttings from for the following year and continue this cycle. Has anyone had success doing this?
@@ShiftingRoots Fingers and toes crossed for us all. My little guys seemed to have survived my pricking out, so far so good. Is it weird that I smelled them already 😂😂
If you’re looking for eucalyptus trees which are cold tolerant then choose the snow gum. As the name suggests, they are found in area of Australia where they experience conditions during winter with consistent snowy conditions
Just curious how things worked out growing Eucalyptus. I'm also in zone 6a. I bought a couple seedlings from a farmer's market. I've never seen them for sale anywhere, so I want to be careful. Thankful for any tips you can share.
How far is your light source from your seedlings? And how often do you pot them up? It’s my first time growing eucalyptus. I’ve been doing well so far but the edges of the leaves are turning purple.
Hi, I am from Australia on the subtropical Sunshine Coast. I would love to be able to get some seeds from here and send them to you in Canada however I don’t whether you have strict border security in your country. We have extremely strict bio security in Australia and I presume most countries would have?
Great video :) Thanks so much for covering the topic, I'm in zone 8 and I've been wondering if eucalyptus would work for us. I know eucalyptus work in zone 8, but in Portugal, we have many microclimate some nights it gets to -7 - -12 so we're not a true zone 8 if that makes sense... So I was hesitant to add eucalyptus to my landscape garden but I'll defo give it a try thanks to your video :)
@Shifting Roots, hey girl! :) You good? Yes, Eucalyptus trees grow well in Portugal. (Especially in the south) Ehehe, a little too well, actually. Fun fact, once upon a time, the EU has strongly encouraged companies (toilet paper companies) to plant Eucalyptus trees in Portugal because they grow so fast and are so beautiful. But they are very flammable too. So there's a new movement amongst growers to ban Eucalyptus trees because of forest fires :( And the other issue with Eucalyptus Trees here is the damage they do to the soil in our context. I hope the Gunnii Eucalyptus doesn't damage the soil too much. It's been a long dream of mine to grow some.
I am over on Vancouver island, and this is my second year growing eucalyptus. My first year, every seed germinated and i had about 50 plants. After a month or so they all got bubbling on their stems and leaves that killed them. I now only have one survivor, and i believe it was due to too mush water. This year i have 100 seeds and will be doing experiments to see what the cause was. Same seeds from west coast seeds.
When you say "eucalyptus" you refer to more than seven hundred species of flowering trees, shrubs or mallees in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. This is about as useful as saying "growing a plant". Mentioning the specific species you're growing would be helpful to anyone with a clue. BTW, we have alpine eucalypts that happily grow in cold/short seasons, as well as ones that grow deep south. FWIW it seems you're growing one of my local species, Eucalyptus cinerea (Argyle apple). They 'over winter' fine, will happily take -6º and hard frosts. They'll grow 50-100ft if happy!

Definitely a plant I would love to try. Thanks for the information.

Thank you! This is the exact information I needed.
great, thanks for that film, I'm starting silver dollar for the first time
I did just plant a pack of silver drop that I got from an Etsy seller and it’s finally just now germinating. 🙌🙌🙌

This is great news !
@@ShiftingRoots oh for sure! It’s all experimenting on my end but I’m happy with the results so far😊

I generally water every 2-4 days, and fill up the bottom tray.

West Coast Seed says they don't ship to US. Johnny's sold out but Redemption seeds has some varieties. I'm in zone 6a and will try it.

@@kellytiebout336 They did great from seed. I used them in my Christmas wreaths too and they were a big hit.
Thank you for this video. Just verifying that it gets mature enough in one season to use in bouquets?
Yes, but only at the end of the season. And seed starting around Christmas is best.

I haven’t really explored hydroponics yet, and I’m not sure it would work. But it’s certainly worth a try!

Not helpful I was seeking how to grow starting off...
Do you mean seed starting them? They get started in late December, under a growlight. They take a long time to germinate. Does that help?
