  • My final couple days in Dangriga the cultural capital of Belize.
The Garifuna people are a people of mixed free African and indigenous American ancestry that originated in the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and speak Garifuna, an Arawakan language, and Vincentian Creole. The Garifuna are the descendants of indigenous Arawak, Kalinago, and Afro-Caribbean people.

🇧🇿🇧🇿 Belize has a special part in my heart. The people are free and welcome everybody. They have a deep sense of community. They own both their language and culture.
I come from Kenya and what I see in Belize is also what I see from where I come from. For sure this is a motivation to go out to visit Belize some day!!!
    Much love from Kenya!!🇰🇪🇰🇪

I'm born in Kenya too, living in Austria since my teenage years with family, I love watching how Africans all over the world live. Having spend almost all my years here, I miss This kind of life a lot!!! How people stay together no matter what ! Austria is one very different tiny country! My child's born here, to us Kenyan parents ! Crazy!!!

Very informative Chris. The Garifuna culture is a mixture of African and the indigenous Amerindians (Caribs and Arawaks) from the Caribbean Islands. The Amerindians originated from South America still found today in Brazil, Venezula, Guyana,Suriname and French Guiana they travelled down to the Islands by of canoes. Remnants of these peoples are still found in some islands while totally extinct in others.

You asked about the Garifuna. It is a mixture of African and Indigenous languages with other influences. It was created in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean.
The language is lost there but you can still learn a lot. For instance, there is a monument to Joseph Chatoyer - The Garifuna chief who is our national hero and there is Heroes Day that pays tribute to this heritage. Big up to all Garifuna worldwide. 🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿🇻🇨🇻🇨🇻🇨.

Garifuna and my ancestors have something in common from around the same time in history, My Acadian great grandparents were Exiled from Nova Scotia in 1755 by the British. Both of them were half Mi'Kmaq Indian and ended up living in San Domingue for a few years until 1779 and then migrated to Louisiana. I'am Cajun/Louisiana Creole I have 7 nationalities in my DNA. Garifuna people were never slaves, but to answer your questions garifuna people adopted spanish surnames upon arrival to Honduras on April 12th 1797. From honduras we migrated to other neighboring countries like Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The biggest garifuna population is in honduras, and most of the villages there still speak the language fluently.

@@user-zq1zg7dg8i incorrect. There are 52 Garifuna communities in honduras. The garifuna population from honduras is well over 300,000, thats not including the ones who live in the U.S. by the way in most of those villages in honduras majority speak garifuna, with exceptions of a few who learn more towards spanish. Now, In belize there is only six garifuna communities and only in hopkins do you hear people speaking garifuna. I dont speak out of my ass like you do. I speak actual facts from actual personal experiences & ground research in both countries.

🔸How many working-age people did you see in this video that were milling about during the day, "doing nothing"?
🔸Is there a shortage of "workers", potential employees? (Look it up, research.)
