      Also, fun fact: proto Saber has inspired Shirou's character while proto Saber Alter has inspired SN Gilgamesh's character and proto Gilgamesh's abilities and fighting style have inspired both Emiya's abilities and fighting style but only Gilgamesh's skills. So when in HA kid Gil calls Shirou his "big-bro" this is propably a referance to how he has taken the most mature parts out of their inspiration sources.

      Not really tho. His teachings made everything worse, it is even explained in drama's. He heard genius idea from Taiga that to stop someone from doing something, you have to teach him wrong so he will naturally stop doing said thing. Which resulted in Shirou creating fake magic circuits from his own nerves (and being in a verge of death EVERY single time he does so) instead of using his own perfectly working ones

      I understand not wanting shirou to get in to the type-moon world
      But he was Adopted by the mage killer for crying out loud which come with enemy that don't give shit if you follow his path or not. the einzburn literally tell illya that kiritsugu leaves her for shirou which lead illya to want to kill shirou Because kiritsugu fails to bring the holy grail back he screwd the moment either way

    In the VN, we get to actually see his thought process.
    But I like the moments in the anime when we see how damaged he is. Those moments where his expression or statement or whathaveyou is undeniably completely insane.
    Like when Rin was asking him why he tried to save Illya even when it was obvious that he couldn't do anything. "I just wanted to save her." That look on his face--those wider than normal eyes, that tilt to his head... he looked deranged. It's moments like that which really make you understand how much he's distorted, even more so than the obvious points where he pointlessly sacrifices himself for others.

    • @OrionoftheStar
      @OrionoftheStar 7 лет назад +141

      +TheMegaUzumaki
      He isn't sane--that's why, despite being only human, he's capable of producing a Reality Marble, which can only be produced by those who do not have a human way of thinking--the "alien common sense of demons". If a human cannot think like a human, he is insane.
      Also, I wasn't talking about him trying to save Rin. I was talking about when he, when both he and Rin had no Servants, 100% intended to jump down to save Illya despite Gilgamesh absolutely curbstomping Berserker. His reason? "I just wanted to save her".
      But it goes beyond that. Shirou doesn't simply _want_ to help people. He _needs_ to. He is literally incapable of trying to preserve his own life at the expense of someone else's. There isn't even a point at which he considers whether or not he should try to save someone--there's no decision on his part, no conscious action being made to overwrite his own self-preservation instincts (which only apply to himself when no one else is in danger), or even simple trained reflex. His own self is never even so much as a subconscious consideration.
      The Fukuyi Fire burned away his capacity to function as a human being.

      @@OrionoftheStar it's so sad that Shirou practically grew up with a survivor guilt that ate away at his mind constantly. Additionally, though I do like the anime, I kinda feel like that scene you mentioned with Shirou looking kinda deranged was a bit too on the nose. Not that I didn't like it, but the tone shift was a bit more drastic than I would've expected. Had it been subtler, I wouldn't have even noticed the shift.

    Just a quick titbit, Kiritsugu actually did try to take Illya back and make her and Shirou a family. As Shirou mentions, Kiritsugu was rarely actually in the house and was always abroad, this was because he was constantly trying to take back Illya from the Einzberns. Though because he betrayed them in the last war, they made it impossible for him to find the castle again. Naturally, Illya didn't know this and was raised hating Kiritsugu, which is why she decides to take out her anger at him on Shirou (which in the VN leads to some fucking awful deaths, like Berserker literally using his sword to crush all of Shirou's body into paste whilst Illya keeps him alive so he can feel every bit of pain, even when just his head is left).

    The reason that Avalon did not affect Kiritsugu and Irisviel the same way as it did Shirou is because, at the time it was implanted into him, Shirou was for all intents and purposes an empty shell. During the Fire, Shirou threw away everything that made him him in order to survive. He threw away his memories, his emotions, and even his personality in a desperate bid to save himself. By the time Kiritsugu got to the poor boy, he could barely be considered a person. So when Avalon was implanted into Shirou’s body, it literally remade him into a sword by turning both his Elemental Alignment and his Origin to Sword.

    10:53 Shirou also threw his ideals to become the hero of justice after watching Saber's memories and through it Shirou learned the burdens of a Utopian ideal & the costs it extracts from those who pursue it & how it tends to break the idealist, His wish later change to be with saber but even if in certain ways it was possible for saber to attain a body, that would lead her death in her timeline so saber chose to return to her time and end her life by ending her contract with the world and they made peace with each others decision. Even in the wiki it's stated that Shirou left his dream of becoming a hero after saber left and started to lead a normal life while trying to figure out a way to reach Avalon while holding her in his memories(With Merlin's AKA Dick wizards help from inside Avalon he finally reunited with his love after a long wait, no saber waited for 1500+ years so it was her who waited longer) .
    And here is the rest from wiki= With the Holy Grail War over, Saber vanishes to her original time, but not before returning Shirou's feelings. She returns to the site of the Battle of Camlann as Artoria and accepts her past without the wish to change it. The dying king is carried into the woods by Sir Bedivere, whom she directs to return Excalibur to the lake. At the end of this route, she weakly smiles and says "I think I will sleep much longer this time...", then passes away, finally obtaining the peace she long sought. Shirou, meanwhile, decides to live life normally and peacefully with Taiga, Sakura, and Illya, vowing with Rin to keep Saber in their memory.
    (Can you see the continuation of your Dream)
    In the Réalta Nua version, an extended epilogue to this route(True Ending) can be unlocked.(Ending of the long Dream) Saber goes to Avalon after her death and waits several centuries to see Shirou again. Shirou endures many tribulations in his life and never stops believing that he will find Saber. After he dies, Shirou and Saber are joyously reunited in Avalon.

    Kiritsugu actually didn't train Shiro "enough to not get himself killed." Point in fact, Kiritsugu taught Shiro the method a mage uses to create their initial magic circuits (a VERY dangerous and deadly process), then never taught Shiro how to just switch that circuit on.
    This meant Shiro was literally risking his life every single day practicing his reinforcement before Rin unlocked his circuits.
    Kiritsugu wanted Shiro to give up magic, he never wanted Shiro to be a mage at all.
    I'll give the same advice I give to ANYONE trying to analyze FSN based off the animes.... Go play the game. Yes, it's a visual novel, so there's a LOT of reading, but the FSN universe and plot are so much more expansive and better than the anime's portray.

    • @edale2
      @edale2 7 лет назад +35

      Avalon did NOT tune Shiro's affinity to swords.
      In the Nasuverse, every person has both an origin and an affinity. These are determined at birth. Shiro is what is known as an 'incarnation' Someone who has the same origin and affinity. Incarnations are VERY rare, and Shiro is the incarnation of "Sword".
      All the fire/Avalon did in regards to Shiro being a sword is burn away the extraneous bits and distill his purpose. Twisting his being to such an extent that he thought as a sword rather than a human (which is where UBW comes from, because a reality marble CAN NOT be formed by a mind that thinks as a human).

    • @TsiahIV
      @TsiahIV  7 лет назад +36

      You should listen to that part again because you heard me wrong. (2:54) I said verbatim, "he taught shirou just enough to say that he helped him, but not enough to get himself killed." Simply put, he taught Shirou what was rudimentary so he wouldn't plunge himself into the same type of danger he experienced.
      I know this, this is exactly what I said at (3:55) "Day in and day out he would endure rigorous training that he imposed on himself for the sake of his belief."
      Said this too at (2:35) "But I believe he avoided this because he really didn't want Shirou to follow in his footsteps, that path only led him to sorrow and anguish."
      I have read the visual novel from start to finish, that's the only way I've could've given such depth to this analysis. I even put in the description that the video should've been 20 minutes longer, but no one knows me and I wanted people to actually watch it.
      Not to sound condescending, but you really should listen before going off on a tangent and correcting. I agree, I encourage anyone to read the source material if they really want true understanding of the series.

    • @edale2
      @edale2 7 лет назад +8

      "but not enough to get himself killed."
      Kiritsugu Taught Shiro enough to kill himself, and then not enough to make it safe.
      Remember how horrified Rin was when she learned how Shiro practiced his magic? And not just because Kiritsugu failed his duty as a mage to pass down his magic to the next generation.
      And I'm sorry for assuming you haven't played the game, but a bunch of the things you said in the video use the anime's tricks to explain something, even when it goes opposite what was said in the game. Kinda has the feeling of someone who saw the anime, and used web-searches and wikis for the rest.

    • @TsiahIV
      @TsiahIV  7 лет назад +8

      And sorry if I seem a bit confrontational, I'm just kinda passionate about FSN, and have been disappointed over and over by the anime adaptations, and I get really annoyed when I see people basing stuff off the anime like the game never existed (never see that happening with animes based on manga).

    To me shirou is one of the most interesting Mc's out there because of how he is explored from so many different angles. One example of this is how shirou is a deconstruction of heroism while having his oath under snow version being a deconstruction of shirou. Other parts of my interest towards him is just how unique he is while being so explored and paradoxical.

      Fate Route/ the First one where with Saber as the love interest
      It had one ending with Saber leaving due to the war ending and they have one last kiss. Then the Realta Nua Edition gave the True Ending (which you have to get all bad ends and story ends to unlock) in where sometime after became a heroic spirit of his own (unlike ARCHER) Shirou and Arturia reunited in the afterlife (with the support of Merlin making a deal with both of them to prove their Faithfulness as True Soulmates)
      It's the romance that the fans want Ufotable to remake next, especially the True END
      And once again you are good in character analysis /review without the bias/bashing from those "standard" fans of shonen; harem; and nasu-franchisers(especially those Fate Zero purist)
      Also Isn't Shirou the deconstruction of the Shonen and Classic Hero

      tl34-lt12 well shirou is a idiot(but being a idiot doesn't make you dumb also human standards see bellow) there's no denying that but he's also a good character even if he can't really stand on his own because to be honest without intresting side characters he's a bit on the bland side one of the big issues is people judge him as if he's a human being and hear me out he's not he looks like one and has a lot of similarities to them but shouldn't be talked about as if he is one UBW exist literally because he is written down as human in gia's rulebook yet persist to be in on a different page than that. shirou is like a sword who gained sentience for a single purpose and learned how to wield himself then got stuck in the body of a human one who fights for ideals that are not his for dreams that are not his and with skills that are not his, he is a fake person it's even brought up several times. he's also really passive and honestly emiya is a better character just because he can drive a story narrative all on his own and shirou simply can't honestly if they want even more money make a movie out of that shit a in depth version of archers journey to hell and maybe him coming to realize what he's done id pay for that shit as for the reason bring up archer is as much as people call him emiya because its easier to tell the two apart that way some seem to forget that archer is also shirou.

      TheMegaUzumaki That's not how it works. And Jared's analysis is more or less true, though it is not shown clearly in the anime. His mind is twisted by the great fire, by Avalon, and by Kiritsugu, the aspect of those can be looked upon in detailed in the original work (the Visual Novel I mean). One of which is the fact that that his original goal is not the ideal itself, at least in the beginning that is. In one of the monologues he has in the Fate route, which is the first part of the novel, he stated how deep down inside he just wanted to smile like kiritsugu did when he saved him, and wonder if he can achieve the same happiness if he followed Kiritsugu's foot steps. This, plus multiple more problems during his childhood leads to the point where we are at the start of the story, where he pretty much is the opposite of Kirei, he can only obtain happiness through the happiness of others. Yes, he actually has selfish desires, though they are extremely twisted from normal standard. At the beginning you can see that he chose to follow this path not because he believe it entirely, as times and times again he saw that his way of doing thing is not how a hero truly do things, but can't come up with the answer why. This is the start of his dilemma, and without this context, you will never understand him.
      Archer is from a timeline where this is not changed, he just continue his path without truly understand where he is going, and you witness his end. Not for UBW Shirou, as the confrontation with Archer makes him reevaluate the ideal, how it is something that is impossible to reach, yet still beautiful and worth pursuing. Unlike how you said he ignored Archer's dilemma, he did fully factoring in how and why Archer got to his end, and he changed. Unlike before, with how he stated that he must become a hero no matter what, without even understand what a hero truly is, now he does, truly believes in his path. That change in his mindset is a huge, HUGE change, that would drastically change his destiny for good.

      Thelonewolf Angle perfect ha! no such thing, a good character yes Great concept and people don't seem to get the point when they complain about certain aspects of him it one of the reason I like Jack, and Frankenstein so much their characters are great in concept but unfortunately shirou can't truly run a story all his own he's a intresting character but he's also super bland and doesn't work without other characters to play of charcaters that tend to be more in interesting than him on their own

    Great analysis. I believe what you said about Avalon's effect Shirou and I am glad your the first person to come out and say that it was responsible for Shirou ideals. Its very true. Shirou's ideals and believes are more in tied to Artoria which is why they make such a good pair

    • @glich6035
      @glich6035 7 лет назад +3

      the problem with that is it's stated that shirou already had the element or origin(cant remeber which it was) of sword before Avalon was inserted and changed the other to match yes it had some influence but it really doesn't explain several things like for one we know part of the reason shirou acts the way he does is completely on his own people talk about him as if he's a human he's not looks like one and has a bunch of other similarities but he's not, why do they think that UBW even exist the whole point was he is so far away from what can be considered human while still marked down as human in gia's rulebook that the distortion created a world where somone like shirou belongs

    Your analysis is pretty spot on, the only disagreement I have being the opinion of the endings and possibly routes, but those are opinions. Its nice to see someone understand the difference between intelligence and self-comprehension. Shirou is absolute in his goals, and methodology. Many view him as an idiot because of his lack of awareness in magical areas, and his suicidal attitude, but you struck gold in the way you mention it is not stupidity that guides him, but a desire that overwrites his self-preservation. It is quite amazing to see this kind of thing happen, I thought most Nasuverse fans were the quiet ones, or the overly obnoxious ones who worship it in a very extreme manner...

    • @usmansiddiqui1384

      Shiro really hadn't resonated with me at all. He felt too idealistic to be relatable, and even though being idealistic is not a bad thing in it of itself, during the story he didn't grow or learn anything at all. I would love him much better if the story didn't focus on him as a protagonist, or if he got pushed to the sidelines. Don't get me wrong, the plot would still revolve around his story, it just shouldn't be in his perspective. In my honest opinion, the plot being in Rin's perspective would have been much better and made much more sense since she actually grew during the story. Just compare the first two episodes, and you'll see what I mean. The first episode (or the pilot, whatever you want to call it), focusing on Rin, was far more interesting and exciting than the second, which focused more so on Shiro. My biggest issue was that Shiro's motive was just too confusing. Most stories would have their protagonist address one of their weaknesses in order to progress. Shiro never addresses any weakness of his own, and therefore the theme and the drive just fell flat. It would have taken a VERY clever story to pull off something like having the protagonist not address their own weakness, and unfortunately this anime could not pull it off. Which is unfortunate because as a whole, the entire anime is full of fun and interesting characters with their own motives and growth as people. The only person lacking the was ironically the protagonist.

      Usman Siddiqui Exactly, see the fight between him and archer and even there he denies completly. What archer had been through, what himself would go through, and he just dont care because he can't accept his ideal as a fail.
      And rin on this route goes down on this patch trying to help makes even sadder.

    • @thinhvo3893
      @thinhvo3893 6 лет назад +4

      Usman Siddiqui It clear that the entire anime go over your head. He accepted his weakness. However went through development does not shirou need to give up his ideal.
      The entire UBW is for shirou to understand it not giving it up. They have address his issue PLENTY of times. He blindly follow that ideal because of Kiritsgu and he follow it because it the only thing he know. That make him selfish which nothing more than a big hypocrisy which shirou admitted that Archer was right.
      However, just because the way he follow it is flaws does not mean it is not a beautiful dream to have. Shirou know that he will never reach that utopia but just because you cannot reach it does not mean you have to give it up.
      That is why Archer and Kiritsugu and well Shirou in one the bad ending failed and was betrayed by their ideal. They pursuit it blindly believe that they will eventually achieve it to the point of using every dirty method as possible to reach it while Shirou know it is not possible but do it anyway aware of the consequences.
      It like world peace. Just because you can never achieve it does not mean we should say "fuck it let all dies and give it up"

    • @thinhvo3893
      @thinhvo3893 6 лет назад +4

      Simon Bourdin thank you. People dont realized that going through development does not mean going 180 on their character. Shirou understand and accept his ideal are folly but do it because it not about achieving a goal but helping people is a beautiful thing. Whereas archer and kiritsugu blindly pursuit an impossible goal hoping for it to be possible, shirou pursuit it knowing it impossible.

      I think the biggest reason for me is that the original VN, the source (and the biggest one at that), for all of this story, character development and lore, has to my knowledge never been officially translated. All we (OFFICIALLY) have is the anime, and character monologues, which were CRUCIAL to Shirou's characterization and added much to other people, were removed. Other anime like, say, Evangelion, didn't have such problems.
      In retrospect, I incredibly SHOCKED at how big the Nasuverse franchise became when it started out just from an incredibly good translation from people like Mirror Moon.

    Hey, when watching this video I can't help but think that emiya shirou is the Japanese version of Peter Parker (Spiderman). Think about it, Uncle Ben gave Parker his dying message "with great power comes with great responsibility". Creating Spiderman who will help anyone and bear the responsibility of those who he can't. Emiya's dad gave his ideals to shirou creating the hero of justice (emiya shirou). Both shirou and Parker are the kind to help as many people as possible. So much that Peter Parker could never get a stable relationship with anyone. Shirou trying to be the hero of justice eventually lost connection, to those who he once was close to. Of course there are differences between the both, but both are basically curses.

    The one part I would disagree with your video on is how you prefer the Normal HF ending over True. Personally, I find the True ending to be better because it finally shows Shirou's development into being able to put his own life and desires over his need to save others, in that he allows Illya to die in order to close the gate to the Greater Grail. But in Normal, he lapsed back into that self destructive mindset, allowing himself to die for the sake of others, while leaving Sakura to grieve. I think this is why the Normal end is still a Bad end, because Shirou never took that final step to overcome his survivor's guilt and hero complex. But overall, amazing video and subbed!

    • @jimbob1862
      @jimbob1862 7 лет назад +44

      I think the main problem with the True End is apart from Illya's death, there's practically no consequence. Sakura just has to look after the city, Shirou just has to get used to his new body (and can even use UBW again if he retrains) and none of the massacres that Sakura is generally responsible for provides consequence. She literally just has to do a job that Rin has done competently for years with little trouble for the rest of her life.
      Fans prefer the Normal End because Shirou had to pay for betraying himself and his very being because he loved Sakura and let her kill all those people.He had to give that final thing he had left. His life. And Sakura paid for her actions and murders through losing Shirou.
      I prefer the True End purely because as a general end for the HF route and the VN as a whole, it's far more lighthearted and provides a better catharsis comapred to how dark HF is. Well, that and Sakura is my favourite. :^)

    • @rockinjoker07
      @rockinjoker07 7 лет назад +35

      jamal munir I can definitely see those fans' argument, but the sacrifice of Illya and Saber warrant as being huge consequences for Sakura and Shirou's selfish actions. And yes, Shirou did betray himself, but honestly, why shouldn't he? He betrayed self destructive and guilt driven complexes and habits, learning to live for his own loved for the first time. So should we even call it 'betraying himself' or maybe 'growing up' instead?

    You are really well read. That was excellent analysis. Shirou is awesome because he knows he can’t get to his ideal and tries anyway.

  • @RuriGokouMadoMura

    This is pretty late since you posted this video a while ago, but around the 10:00 mark you say that Rin is surprised at Shirou's reaction to the seemingly dead bodies, causing the viewer/Rin to realize that Shirou is emotionally disconnected. That is true to an extent, but the reason stated in the VN was that Shirou was used to seeing dead bodies, so he was able to act calm even in a situation like that.
    AMAZING video though, there aren't enough people who understand Shirou's character and I'm glad there are people like you who are able to clearly explain why he acts the way he does.

    I feel like this is the much needed antidote to the poison I keep voluntarily injecting to myself by reading "secondaries" complaints about Shirou and FSN. Great analysis, subbed!
    (I see that touhou banner. Have you thought about making videos of that?)

    • @TsiahIV
      @TsiahIV  7 лет назад +2

      I can empathize. Not sure if you're familiar with "Digibro", but he's also a secondary and has a video literally ripping the fate series apart. That entire video is physical pain to my abdomen, but I kept watching.
      To be honest, I just found out that banner was Touhou lmao. I picked it because it was Naruto themed and thanks.

    He gave the wife to the King so when King kills him his sprit will dwell on other sword, with this they will be together forever for eternity. At least i think that is the logic behind his actions.

    I hear Fate has several unused routes like the standalone Sakura and llya routes (Heaven's Feel was a combo of both), Caster route, Mashu/Sheilder route and Shinji route. This would have been called Fate Other Night. Also, this makes me wonder what other aspects of Shirou's character they could have covered? Also, I wish Shirou would get some therapy

    • @pablo9234
      @pablo9234 4 года назад +2

      you are right about the illya and caster one. The shinji one is just a meme, and the sheilder oen was an idea for the anime.
      Also, sadly no taiga route was planned

    Perfection is flawed as humans must struggle and suffer to adapt and survive as well as better themselves. Save those in front of you as its right amd kind but people should be better so no one meeds saving.

      Tsiah IV you're welcome, your video is good stuff!
      I really like how You describe and punctuate your points very clear and concisely
      And adding your own opinion about the points that everybody can just read from typemoon wiki
      Unlike a lot of other channels that just blabbering stuff from wiki with monotone monologue, lengthy lengthy introduction and excuses and unnecessary stuff
      Keep it up! You earned yourself a notification squad!
