Hey all - in case anyone is curious, I have read the ending of the manga, but this video does not spoil anything past where the anime currently covers and is friendly for anime-only watchers.
Also, please excuse the occasional repeated use of clips for this one. I talked about Floch for nearly 20 minutes here but he actually hasn’t had a ton of screen time, especially proportionate to his importance. So there wasn’t much variety to choose from. Aside from that, hope you have a good one and I hope you enjoy the video!

Let’s not forget Floch’s maturity: Zeke ripped his commander and hundreds of his closest friends to shreds, and thre Floch into a total hell. A typical shonen character would dedicate themselves to revenge against Zeke (Levi) yet Floch completely abandons his own (likely) hatred towards Zeke, instead acting like his ally. This might be reading a little deep into it but think about Flock’s name as well. A group of birds is called a flock, and Flock is a member of the survey corps represented by the wings of freedom. His name literally symbolizes how he’s just one person from the crowd, one of the forgettable fodder that dies in every mission that the survey corps undertakes. That, along with the fact that he has no special powers, no special skill, not graduating in the top ten and used to be a member of the garrison filled with average soldiers, really sells his background as just an average guy who became this way due to what he experienced.

To me, Floch is that necessary perspective to AoT because his perspective adds more depth to the narrative in a world like theirs. It's hard to deny their existence in a war-torn world like theirs; whether it be motivated by nihilism or some twisted version of someone's philosophy/sentiment, his voice is necessary. His character arc encompasses what no one would dare to address. Hypocritical, sadistic and in many ways cut-throat heartless, he ironically becomes the representative of those who have been denied truth and have been left in the dark by those in power. Honestly, I think having Isayama adding him into the story is one the best thematic decisions to AoT.

To be fair, they did show up at Liberio right as the rest of the world declared that they were going to invade their home and burn it to the ground. I don't think Floch can be blamed for turning into a complete zealot for his home after that. Sure we can say it's still messed up especially since he is assaulting people from his own home. Yet it's him and his or everyone else.

Holy crap. I've read this story, but I think I finally realized what Marlo's purpose truly was.
We got to know Marlo just a little more than Floch as a character to start. Marlo was the one new recruit who was actually forming bonds with the core squad. His backstory as a former MP turned scout who wanted to do more for people? And his dorkiness and tsun-tsun relationship with Hitch? Makes him likable and makes us hopeful for his future. Given the choice at the time of Erwin's suicide charge: If there was to be a survivor? If it wasn't Erwin, most in the audience would have preferred Marlo to be the one to survive rather than Floch, who at that time, upon realizing firsthand that war is hell, was already suffering panic attacks when he realized he was being ordered to charge into his death.
Marlo died. He was fodder. For mostly nothing. It didn't need to be Marlo. It could have been anyone riding that horse that day. In the grand scheme of things? His death was truly pointless. His story ended for virtually nothing. The most generous thing you could apply to his death was that he heroically took the rocks that could have hit someone else. Hell, did it even make a difference if they were one guy short? Or even two? The whole job was just to serve as a distraction. The plan didn't specifically need him at all.
His entire point as a character is to serve Floch's development. He existed to viscerally illustrate Floch's point: He didn't want to die so pointlessly. And we know what that looks like because of Marlo. Because Marlo surviving would have been the more likely scenario in another story. It would have "meaning" storywise. Marlo was the guy who plot armor normally would have saved in that charge. We were introduced to him, he bonded with the main cast, he had goals and he seemed to have an arc of sorts in the cards. And then? His story ended. Cut in the middle. Because that's what happens in a desperate war. The unsatisfying and abrupt end of Marlo's arc is what begins Floch's. Marlo reinforces Floch's character and drives home exactly what he's afraid of and the fate he wants to avoid. He gets he's expendible. He gets he's fodder. He just doesn't want to end up like Marlo. Someone with his whole life ahead of him and yet died a death that didn't need to be his.

If you reversed the story. It would seem like those “this is reality and these new guys are dumb” troupe in movies. Floch wants victory for his people, is the last survivor of his team, tries to save his leader who’ve won them many victories, and some hotshot prodigy and his sister wants to save their childhood bestie instead. Then afterwards want to make peace with the enemies who’s cause them and their people suffering and meaningless deaths since season 1. He’s the guy that knows peace isn’t an option while the others want to hold hands and sing kumbaya. I don’t even like him that much. He isn’t even on my top 10 favorite characters on AOT but it’s so easy to see why his motives and actions are more realistic than any of the characters. People just like to hate him cause he’s not cool with their favorite character chans

I think the part that I found the scariest about Floch is how so many of us can become like him. During the attack on Liberio, while it's certainly tragic having to see innocent people and children die, especially since they had nothing to do with what happened on Paradis, I honestly felt a sense of catharsis in seeing the Marleyans experiencing the same pain and loss that they inflicted upon the island Eldians, and ended up agreeing with Floch. Much in the same way how someone who was abused as a kid by their parents would like to inflict the same kind of suffering upon them.

It's actually very intresting how scene with instructor Keith mirrors Erwin's recruitment. I think that it exists not only to show how ruthless Floch have bocome, but to prove his point that people have a right to know what they are actually signing up to. While using Erwin's "shinzo sasageyo", he makes kadets beat up the instructor. Floch basically shows them that they would have to dirty their hands to make Yeagerists goals become a reality. And blood on their hands will not always belong to the enemy behind the walls.
