Using Photoshop for web design used to be the standard… a long time ago. Back when websites were created based on bitmap graphics, Photoshop was the primary tool to accomplish this. Can you use Photoshop for web design today still? Sure you can, but there are far more effective website wireframing tools and prototype builders out there nowadays. Think about it like this: Photoshop is meant for photographers and graphic designers. Is Photoshop for web design? No. It was once used as a tool to create websites, but it was never created for the intended purpose of creating websites.
So, you probably know what I’m getting at here: stop using Photoshop for web design. Instead, considering using something like Figma or Adobe XD. In today’s video, I’m going to specifically talk about Figma. I’m also going to cover Figma design tips and strategies for how to start using Figma for your web design projects.
But, why use Figma? Figma is a website wireframing tool that was build and meant to be used for web design. While website prototyping with Photoshop is possible, like I said, the experience for the designer and for the client is much better in Figma. Figma is better than Photoshop because users can click between screens, interact with elements, and experience and view the site in a way that isn’t possible in Photoshop. It took me a long time to get over using Photoshop for web design, but if it’s between Figma or Photoshop (Photoshop vs. Figma), I will chose Figma for wireframing every time now.

So glad I found your channel! Thank you for clarifying this subject. I am a new web developer and have messed around with both Photoshop and Figma. From my Google research, I gathered that Figma was a better choice for UI/UX work, but I needed more clarification. After watching your video, my confidence has increased, I have a better understanding of the differences, and now I will dive into Figma!

😂😂😂classic! I've used PowerPoint for wireframes back in the day, then Photoshop, now using Figma a lot more. Great overview!

Hi Brad thank you for this video. I'm a 42 years old guy that is trying to get out of shitty jobs and broken bones and I'm thinking to get a course and start a path in web design. I know it might sounds a little bit late but I don't care, i'm gonna try. With this video you have just answered a question I had so thank you. I'm going to follow you from now on to get inspired so thanks again!

I'm still really struggling to use Figma/XD for anything serious. I'm soooo comfortable in Photoshop I feel like I can do absolutely anything I can imagine.

It’s always hard to move away from tools that we are so used to using! It took me forever to even consider trying Figma. Thanks for watching!

I felt that way at first, but it's just that you need to get used to using it. I started by rebuilding other projects I did in photoshop with Figma (like email designs, banner ads, landing pages). Figma can be used for so much when it comes to digital design. PS is good for creating raster graphics and stuff like movie posters, or masking out objects/painting. But if you are in the digital space doing anything from websites, static ads (social, display), even OOH digital ads, landing pages, apps, email. I've even gone as far as building a streetwear brand in Figma. FIgma is not just a "UI/UX" tool, that's all nonsense. Figma is a great design tool. I still use PS for image manipulation or advanced masking, but Figma is my main chick for anything digital.

Figma is easy , figma has lot more dynamics and is more sophisticated tool for web design and mobile designs , yes I know photoshop means a lot to others ... But so was c++ and c# but now people tilted towards python and other coding languages , learning figma is hard but once you get used to it is the perfect tool for everything !!!!

unfortunately Figma going to die. and everyone if not most of the web designer will go back to using photoshop soon.
The only reason Figma become the go to for web designing is because it is FREE.
but now that Adobe bought figma. you know the drill right?
people with tight budget will choose to use photoshop since it can do both.
while Figma can only do web design it doesn't do photo editing.
People who already are using Figma and photoshop will keep using it even if both are subscription base. (coz they can as they are already making money out of it).
those who are just starting web design will probably choose between the 2. they might subscribe to figma while pirating photoshop or vice versa.
but some will entirely ditch figma and just go all the way on photoshop.
I'm a web designer from 2005.. and still using photoshop today. photoshop tried to become web design tool by release a new feature called artboard but failed haha I keep telling myself that I will learn figma or XD but I just couldn't find a reason to start coz I'm toooooo used to photoshop. photoshop is like a part of my limb.

Thanks for your thoughts on this! It’s true that it is hard to make the switch once you’ve learned a tool that meshes well in your workflow.

It was never really free though. I've had to pay for it long before the adobe acquisition was thought about. I've been using PS just as long and added it into the workflow because it made sense. I also work with big brands in-house as well, and Figma is an extremely powerful tool for digital design overall, especially when you need the added layer of collaboration with your team. PS is not vector based either, and that is super important for digital design!
When you are creating digital assets for brands like websites, landing pages, ads, apps, etc, you need to be able to scale your assets with consistency, quality and speed. PS does not let you do that. Figma translates to web (responsive design), PS does not. It's clunky and just not meant for how we need to create for this digital world. Imagine having to build 30 pages for an e-comm website with 30 artboards on your file...or 30 pds..haha no thanks.
I can go on and on, but this comment seems really unprofessional and subjective. Price has nothing to do with using Figma over PS. I would never go back to using PS for the digital design, it makes no sense what so ever and I used PS for everything for over a decade like most people in the industry. I use PS for what it's meant for (mostly image manipulation, advanced masking).

Stop this talent thing! Designers (especially US designers, for some reason) are always beating themselves up that they "are not artists." Artists also have tools and methods and practice and grit to achieve what they do. There is no difference. Let's stop beating ourselves up! Talent is a mystical ancient Greek religion. As Chuck Close said, "Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get the work done."

Figma wins hands down. PS is bloated beyond belief.
