    I'm so glad that you used the word "journal". Women have diaries, men have journals. I used a weekly planner during my working days to plan daily activities an check them off if they were completed. Not quite a journal, but a history of what I accomplished during my working years.

    Ash,
    Love ALL your content from horologic reporting, sartorial and gentlemanly musings........ and now journaling!
    I also went through a similar trial and error struggling to find a proper journal that pleased me aesthetically and functionally (using fountain pens also) and I too settled on LEUCHTTURM several years ago.
    Absolutely the best for those of us using fountain pen.
    Thanks for a wonderful channel from another "mature" old school chap working every day to co-exist in our contemporary society.
    ......... much more could be said, but just know I appreciate the simpatico we share. If I was in the UK I would surely find you and buy you a pint.

    I used to journal when I was in high school. I have not kept a journal ever since. However, after watching your jounalling video's, I got back on it. That and I had also started keeping track of my conscious spending. Anyway, great video as always.

    The desire to daily journal likely related to your time in the RAF and Police. I use Apple iPhone app. That’s good for me. And it reminds me to do it every day.

    I love your approach to style. I have a foot in both worlds -- cargof shorts, jeans and flannel shirts, and dress pants, shirt, tie and jacket with wool topcoat and vintage Homborg. And I've been using a Lamy Safari since the early I live in New Britain, Ct., USA.

    One of the visual challenges is to not worry about mistakes and 'cross-outs.' Unlike electronic spell checkers, it's likely mistakes (spelling etc), will interrupt flow. I guess one must simply overcome this.

    I enjoyed this, thanks Ash. Very helpful to see your daily system (13:58) for tracking diet/exercise/tasks and introspection. I adopted something similar after seeing it in an earlier video of yours. The daily introspection section is something new I will try though. I usually also note my water, coffee, and alcohol intake to try to keep my longer term health goals on track. Out of interest, I know you keep several journals, how do you split your journaling across them? I might break out a separate one to take to work, though I enjoy having everything in one place. All the best!

    Great stuff, Ash, as always.
    Some notes: Much as I love the look and feel of fountain pens, they do present a few challenges. I NEVER carry a fountain pen in a jacket pocket without it being inside a case. A good quality fountain pen shouldn't leak. But sometimes accidents happen. I know Lamy fountain pens come with grey vinyl carry cases, and that's where my fountain pens go when they go in a jacket pocket. It's been many decades since I ruined a blazer with an ink stain, and never again as far as I'm concerned.
    Also: Its a good idea, when writing with a fountain pen, to have some blotting paper. Just a quick dab after every page or paragraph to make sure the ink is dry. I buy full sheets on Amazon, and then use a paper cutter to cut them to size to fit inside the pockets of my journals. A piece of blotting paper lasts a very long time in normal use. So it's cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned.
    Lastly, as a left-handed person, I do sometimes find I get ink stains on my fingers. When I'm away from home, I usually carry a packet of alcohol-based hand wipes to clean my fingers when my journaling is done.

      Good tips sir. I never, ever carry a fountain pen in the pocket of a garment - they always go in my briefcase. Even the most fancy and expensive pen would never be trusted in that regard.

    Hi Ash. I also have a Leuchtturm1917, and I used it for the first time since January yesterday. I use the Leuchtturm as a bit of a scrapbook by pasting in reminders of places we have visited. I do struggle to think of things to write on normal days when nothing in particular is happening.
    A lot of people are currently using Japanese planners as journals. The popular one is the Midori Hibino 2 page per day. It looks great, but I'm not sure how fountain pen friendly it is. There are lots of reviews on RUclips. Thanks for the video 👍

    I find 80gsm is okay, but prefer 100gsm for fountain pens. There's a company called "Rettacy" that produces some wonderful notebooks with 100gsm, and they're much more affordable than Leuchtturm. More variety of page count, too. Some are like bricks! My favourite notebook is the Leuchtturm "paperback book" sized softcover, which is great as a gym log. Slightly smaller than A5.

    I do like the Rhodia paper. I was fortunate enough to find Cult Pens offering a big discount when I started journaling. My work required me to use a fountain pen daily, so I have a, perhaps, more practical approach to the pens, but getting the paper right just for oneself is essential. The pleasure in quality will smooth the experience. On your recommendation I will now finally indulge in the Leuchtturm, which has seemed too expensive in the past. However, it would be a strong signal to my self that I will be doing something important. Thank you.

    Considering that a Mont Blanc pen now runs over $600, you have bargains. New company over here called Ellington. Pens run $45 or so. Work well, look elegant, and I have several of the for different color ink. And Mont Blanc ink is the best. It has a cleaner in it to help keep your pen in good shape.

    I've just bought "Oxblood" ink from Diamine. Not quite what I was looking for, but almost. I'm looking for something a little more..."bloody." It was my little joke to myself, that all the important stuff I'd write in "blood." At this rate it'll be cheaper to open a vein! 🧛‍♀️🦇

    I made an investment in a Montblanc pen, got a great deal because it had someones name engraved on it. Ill only use the Montblanc black ink in it. My other pen is a Lammy 2000 and I use Pilot blue ink in that one. I have found that using the fine nib that came with my lammy works well on Moleskin notebooks. Its not perfect but Moleskins are the most accessible notebooks where I live so its worth being able to easily aquire a new notebook and miss out on better brands

    Does anyone have any advice for left-handed writers for whom a fountain pen just becomes a way to stain paper and fingers with fresh ink? I’ve heard good things about rollerball pens and I wondered if anyone else had advice.

    • @vrdrew63
      @vrdrew63 2 дня назад

      As a leftie myself, I'll say that its a challenge.
      You do have to hold your hand a little differently to avoid smearing the ink. And it takes time, and practice, to develop an attractive hand.
      Personally, I find that holding the pen between my thumb and first two fingers, and then resting the pinky and ring finger at about 8 o'lock, below the line I'm writing on, and pushing the nib upwards towards the 1 o'clock position, gives me the best results. But its going to vary from person to person. I remember taking a fair amount of time with lined cursive handwriting worksheets to get this right.
      Also: See if you can find some blotting paper. Blotting the ink dry every paragraph or so helps prevent smears.

      Pilot Hi-Tecpoint are pretty decent. I can’t get on at all with anything “broad”, but I do prefer the precise and fine action of V5, with it’s thin delivery tube in the finer 0.5mm. It’s not bulky to hold, and is weighted very nicely in use if the cap is on the other end. It’s no high end fountain pen, but the ink dries quickly enough to not be an issue for lefties

    You need some fine fountain pens, not this crap! A Graf von Faber Castell, a nice Pelikan, Visconti, Sailor or a Montblanc, something along those lines. I use Clairfontaine A5 notebooks.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 дня назад
