Probably the perfect Technic set! The real rover will also not go over a big rock but rather around it. Suspension is mostly for the uneven terrain. Would have been a cool Easter-egg to add the pet rock that Perseverance carried around it's wheel for a while. I guess you can use one of the spare parts for that. ;)
The suspensions doesn't work when the set is pushed, because it reality all wheels are powered, which cooperates with this kind of suspension
Pushing it makes it less stable because forces are acting in reverse (pushing wheel over surface vs pulling surface under wheel)
This kind of suspension can climb over obstacles up to three times of wheel diameter (Imagine you car going over curb three times the wheel diamater). That's also one of the reasons why the rover is so slow

I think this set is better than the LEGO Technic fan community thought because it contains a tons of brilliant building techniques and also rocketed from the not so interesting licensed car,construction maschine category which is great and makes this set more desireable than other sets. Sorry for the minimal grammar mistakes but I still learn English and do my best. Nice content,thank you to shared it this! 😊

This is probably the first time that the Technic style actually fits the build.
My theory about the orange flower piece (3:53) is that it's supposed to resemble the California Poppy, the state flower of California, where the rover was built and tested.
The designers of Technic sets are beyond amazing. So many varies of techniques in each set they produce
Very excited for this set. It’s very unique for the line and isn’t another supercar or construction vehicle. The steering is genius even if there is slack in the functionality.
In defense of the suspension action: I think the LEGO design went in the direction of more realism than play. Moving the model by the body is a poor simulation of the design. Because the rover is driven by the wheels they will climb obstacles. The suspension does not need to bound over uneven surfaces like an off-road vehicle. It will never coast - it is always driven - slowly. The suspension needs to move to maintain stability and contact with the surface as the wheels follow the undulations - not react to them.
It will be nice for propping up on uneven terrain, but yeah definitely not meant to move around over it. Maybe some day Lego will release a larger version of the rover with reinforced suspension and whatnot, that can actually be controlled by a motor system.
My wallet after watching this, just after I build the Discovery set last week: "Oh sh... here we go again"

Didn't know this was being released! It looks fantastic I've been interested in the whole perseverance mission from start, part. The helicopter. I'll be getting it, especially the price looks good

i personally know a lot of NASA offices that will definitely have one of these.
I work at cornell. I see one of the real rovers every day. They made a few so when things go wrong the support teams on earth could use the other ones to help fix it and send commands. Even though I see the real one all the time I might have to get this.

Great review, obviously but super kudos for including all the technical detail about the rover itself. As someone who's had the chance to work with the rover teams, it was nice to have that extra detail shown off!

Very cool set. Also one of the hardest sets I've made, had to take it apart and rebuild it a couple times to get the mechanisms just right.

I've got 3 days ago and my first thought was to motorise it. Unfortunately motorising the wheels would be very hard but I'll definitely add motors for the arm.
Actually I re-thought my position, I'm thinking about driving the wheels using wormgear, so it creeps like a real thing. But the problem is that those weels don't have much grip. And I have only 4 engines, so not all of them could be driven (and making drive the weels through driveshaft given how the suspension works).
It looks great! Yeah, the suspension will never work great but that's because it's designed for Mars gravity 😎

This is cool. I bought Curiosity and never opened the box as it was so cool. I might do the same with this. As much as i love the models, some boxes are too nice to open sometimes!

@@sopeonarope6646 Yeah, I don’t get it. The fun of LEGO is building a cool set. There is nothing fancy about their boxes - and one could always tape it back up and display the box if they really want to.

I bought that set. Building process is pleasant and model itself is nice, but in my opinion there is way to much slack in steering mechanism. I wonder if pneumatics wouldn't be a better design choice.
Such a set should really be able to drive over some obstacles I think.

I really like this Technic set. It’s my favorite LEGO theme ever, but I know almost nothing about this Mars Rover itself
Honestly my favorite feature of it is the 2 mode steering using all knob gears
The flower and carrot may be in reference to the mission to look for signs of life. In the same way as the Jurassic Park T-Rex they might have snuck in a frog. The real Perseverance does carry a dinosaur.

I like the set quite much
Why the small flower to block the mechanism you asked. Well, a normal stud would be knocked off a lot easier than that flower stud. It has a bit more clutch power and by its shape it dampens the force of the mechanism that hits it a lot better. So small but clever design.

I just built this set, it will look great next to the ISS.
compare the creator 10266 instruction manual to the Percy manual. quite a difference and an indication as to what could have been included at a minimum. it was impressive in many ways, and an enjoyable build, but is ultimately just a display item- which was a disappointment. found it fairly complex for children who seem to be the target market for it especially with the AR which could have been far more exciting considering the engineering behind the rover. missing the sample return entirely, and it has far too much slack in the steering. could have been a truly exciting motorized set. would have been immediately worth a few hundred more if it was more feature rich in that way.
well compared to the ideas curiosity this is quite large so I wouldn't call it small

Interesting how your gear ratio in your ingenuity helicopter is 1:10. In mine it’s more like 1:4.
You need to charge the battery more, leave the helicopter outdoors ;)
So about the wheels, something I noticed while building the set is that the instructions tell you to misalign some of the universal joints along the drive shaft, which was very odd to see. I thought maybe it made the steering smoother to have them misaligned (something about the alignment of the wheels relative to the axis of rotation?) but it doesn't seem to me like there's anything in the instrutions about it...

I don’t think the propellers are linked with hearing. I think when you spin the top one you create air movement which spins the bottom one.
I think they should instead of doing info about the rover in the instructions, it should have a QR code and it should show you the different featuresof the rover irl and show them on the build.

In Poland it is also already available. I've got it 3 days ago. And for the lower price, around 78 euro. Although the app still doesn't have the rover (like Balazs said), I suspect they will release it on 1.06.

Right at the beginning it's unclear what to do. There are TWO parts bags with the number "1" on them. Which one am I supposed to open?

@@RacingBrick Thank you., But, geesh, shouldn't the drawing show both bags so that it's utterly clear that you're supposed to open both? The fact that the two bags both have "1" but the one has a solid white background behind the "1" and the other has just a white border around the "1" sure makes it seem like it's somehow for two different builds.

Jeez... I mean the blue and red pins and yellow axles are ugly in normal Technic sets already but this... Before buying this, one should get a bunch of white, black and grey pins from 3rd party suppliers to replace the original ones.

That's because it's completely functional over form since every gram in space cargo is very expensive. There's no room or budget for looks. But that's why this is a perfect subject matter to make with technic bricks!
