Whilst I understand how we've arrived at this situation, I very much disagree with the 122 not penning OBVIOUSLY overmatched armor. @@5co756 I don't disagree, just wanted to point out, I believe the IS-2 has 2 short recoil stabilizers on top of the breech as well as the weight of the gun/breech itself and the side/rear diverting muzzle break. Unless the energy required to propel the shell is greater than the weight of the barrel/strength of the breech internals it shouldn't be a problem to be launching rounds down range *I should also mention that the IS-2 (along with alot of guns/cannons/tanks) don't necessarily have to withstand the force of the impact, just the force required to bring a much smaller, lighter object to a relatively high speed given the explosion of the propellant. Which has somewhere to go besides being completely contained, it will push the shell down the barrel with the expanding gases from the propellant ignition and once it exits the muzzle, the gases will be diverted along with a majority of that force. Though the cannon *does* need to withstand the peaks of pressure created by this interaction
@@richardzehe1552 The force or energy is the same , imagine accelerating a 25kg shell at 800m/s in milliseconds . That's like if somebody gets hit with a shotgun in movies and flys 5m back , the shooter would also fly 5m back .
@@5co756 Not to make this comment thread anymore unbearably long but bear with me. I did specifically avoid saying a vehicle "moving at 800m/s", which seems to be the misinterpretation/miswording here that I've caused, to clarify no, I do not think another tank being hit by a 25kg shell moving 800m/s is the same as a vehicle moving at 800m/s. It would be roughly the same amount of force as being hit by a 3500lb vehicle (roughly a family sedan) moving at 96.1m/s (215mph) If that helps to clarify. I Wasn't sure what common place item many people, who aren't very involved in learning about force delivered to a target vs. Projectile Energy would find commonplace. A better comparison would be to state that a 5.56x45mm FMJ (55grains) produces about 1,294 ft/lbs of muzzle *energy* HOWEVER it would only exert a maximum of 0.79 lbf *against a target at a range of 1km.* I did notice however that I used ft/lbs in place of lbf in some places and will correct that in previous comments as they are separate measurements with different purposes. I should also point out that recoil felt for the IS-2 and its crew is not the same as being hit by the projectile; energy dispersion time differences, vehicle weight, cannon component strengths etc. the recoil from the gun of the IS-2 is dispersed over a longer period of time than say the Impact of the shell on target. 1-2 seconds of energy dispersion vs. milliseconds for the impact of the projectile. Another reason why cannons have very large heavy components and are usually found on even heavier vehicles along with having recoil dampening systems in place. For the same reasons that when you shoot a rifle, the rifle doesn't recoil hard enough to go through your shoulder the same as the bullet would, that along with the width, height, etc. of the buttstock against your shoulder and the overall firearms weight. M56 is another good example, 90mm shell but it kicks the front end of the vehicle up to a foot or more off of the ground when it fires; the vehicle is not heavy enough to mitigate the recoil effectively but the breach and barrel are strong enough to withstand the blast inside moving the shell. Not so much a trick of newtons law but you are giving that force a place to go with the equal and opposite force exerted within the cannon. This is also what keeps a cannon from say, ripping the turret off the tank that is firing it, recoil absorption and mitigation along with lots of meticulous vehicle design. I appreciate the respectful way you went about having this discussion and I apologize for how long this all ended up being, I definitely could have worded several things better 😅 anyways, cheers
Volumetric really screwed this thing over because who would've thought that a 122 aphe shell can't fit in many places. Also I hope your surgery went well if you had that yesterday
Your continued usage of halo music, references, and sound effects has singlehandedly brought back enough noatalgia that i went and bought the master chief collection. I finished all of Reach yesterday, started working on CE this morning.
I used to shoot to the back of this tank's turret with M109A1 and it received NO DAMAGE, then it oneshoted me. Respawned with M41A1 and returned, load APDS to it and the shell CANNOT PENETRATE it, then it hit 1 pixel of the commander's hatch and ammo racked me.
Since volumetric made the 122 a nightmare to use, you can try the T-44 with the 85mm gun. It's quite fast, it can sometimes tank a poorly aimed AP shell but the gun is not strong enough for most things frontally, so you gotta flank them. And seeing that you love that playstyle, i think you can make it work.
Forturn cookie: you have every reason to be confident Spook: Drive infront of a million tanks unscathed and hits a sick moving shot I guess I should start ordering more takeaways
It be like that, its gun is still great for the br besides the occasional bs where it crumples against armor a 122mm probably shouldn't. Its armor seems very unreliable tho and the tall siluette that im glad IS 3 seems to fix. Sometimes the armor works wonders, sometimes it can't stop a fart downwind. Ik it has weak spots like any tank but wiggle em or nah the enemies tend to land their shots even over great distances. Best method this far seems sidescraping while hiding the front behind a big rock or building tho, unless they got heat.
I just discovered this channel and thank you... most WT channels are a cacophony of memes and sound bites but I finally found one I can actually watch! Great stuff.
I have a full lineup of these and while yes, Tiger 2 gun is kinda better, IS-2 is still pretty good. Anyway, if you downtier it, it absolutely bullies the Germans. When they were 6.3 and you got a full downtier, it was absurd..
Attempt number 22 at getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is, he has to dig in before engaging targets. Movement around the map is allowed, but he has to dig in again before reengaging.
Given the utter inconsistency of shooting tanks in this game, Gaijin May as well add the Afghanistan tech tree. Toyota Hylux with a Dshk, a dirt bike with a dood holding an RPG, no planes, but you get a 5 ton suicide car. All at 10.0 of course
Afghan tech tree that consists of a t55, bmp1, btr70 and trucks with guns and ofc a mig21 and also it will be a subtree in the israeli one with some other arab stuff
as a person who has been playing for a while and maxed out everything in the game, I was so excited for this video ngl and its a banger aswell. The is-2 is one of the most fun heavy tanks in the game and i would recommend everyone to use it.
After the patch the Tiger II H gun has a new or changed gun breech that sits waaaay too far in the back of the turret for the loader to be able to reload the gun.
Honestly the only reason the IS-2 or any 122mm gun feels so bad is Volumetric, the smallest section of armor even a 10mm sheet metal plate will act like its made out of the core of a neutron star. the IS-2 used to be one of my fav tanks in the entire game now its just.. depressed and sad due to how many times my BR-471D has been stopped by a German Gun ball mount / Coax Gun barrel or the driver view ports of tanks
Honestly the only reason the IS2 is still viable at 6.7 is either reverse driving IS2s and also BS Volumetric armor. The amount of times I've bounced IS2 mantlets/turret fronts in 76mm/90mm/88mms drives me insane...
I used to love it too had a lot of fun with it. Even with volumetric it used to do fine. I lost the faith in it when it non penned panther turret from front (i know it can go through panther front plate) but still. Gaijin has nerfed the 122 in few recent updates, sometimes it just non pens, bounces or does nothing. Pair that with the horrible reload speed it does not feel worth it. At least is3 has armor benefit, is2's whole huge lower front plate is a weak spot.
When this and the t44 were 6.3 it was a very good lineup, especially combined with the t44122 which was basically if the aforementioned tanks had a baby
One of my most used vehicles (IS-6 being #1). But man oh man do the IS tanks not give the most grief with that lonnnng ahh reload time. Waiting ≈20 per IS shot is hell. Great video, man! I love seeing you use my favorite nations heavy tanks.
it was worth the wait with regular is2, but since is2 1944 can already have difficulties penning targets in uptier the 20 seconds really becomes a pain. Can't imagine how unreliable that gun becomes with is3 and above. I mean yeah aiming has a lot to do with it, but in some situations you gotta be quick on your feet and risk it or die, if you miss the weak spot big deal take cover and try again right? well with other tanks anyway, with IS tanks if you miss a weak spot and non pen, you either A: lose 20% of your sanity from wasting a chance and having to wait humiliating 20 seconds, or B: they know you have a long reload and will just rush you. If i need to aim for tiny weakspots like anyone else but have twice the reload i don't think its a good tradeoff to have big boom anymore. It was fair for when you can almost pen enemies anywhere to kinda balance it out. Moment of silence to kv2 users tho who almost have double the reload, would honestly leave the match if i missed with that
@@damnsonwheredyoufindthis.3830 The gun honestly does not struggle much on the IS-3 and IS-4, after playing the IS series tabks for a long time I figured that they can pen just about anything if you aim properly
8th time challenging Spookston to bring the Char 25t into an 8.3 lineup, and then incrementally increase the BR until the tank becomes actually unplayable.
Why does this is-2 have such fucking smooth suspension that it may as well be stabilised, while the amx m4, which is even heavier, has helium tanks attached to its tracks, making it bounce all over the place?
@@dinochookproductions5190 I agree, I have a k/d of almost 3 with it, which is by far my highest of all the vehicles I regularly use. I still get jealous and salty when I get nuked with a poorly aimed aphe round though
@@fabianj.5128 everyone knows playing UK means that you hate yourself and as a UK main i agree using solid shot is handicapping yourself when a tank with less pen can one shot the same shot
One amazing part about the IS-2 is the suspension, you can often stop way before your opponents and fire or even fire on the move (unless they have stabilizers)
6.7 is just an absolute mess in general. ALL Pershings are 6.7, so you literally have the triangle of speed (M26), armor (Jumbo Persh) and firepower (Super Persh) in one lineup, alongside the other American super heavies
I think the IS-2 has the same problem as the Tiger II, it's an amazing almost OP tank when it's top tier and it absolutely sucks when its low tier. The whole 6.0-6.7 range is just somewhat broken in that regard.
@@russman3787 I don't mean they are the same. They're actually quite different despite being "heavy tanks". But both are hard to kill in a down tier and kill almost anything they face in one shot. What the IS-2 lacks in reload speed it makes up in size, the much smaller profile makes it easier to hide and take cover. The armour protection is less on paper but it's stalinium with weird angles that magically bounces shots, so who knows. I do think the Tiger II is a better tank in the game tho, if you play it right.
If you think it sits on too high a BR play T32s. A 7.7 tank with a worse gun than the IS2 only faces APDS and HEAT, completely ignoring your only advantage - armor.
@gunther2555 I absolutely love the looks of T32, but that thing is so bad on its BR. The M103 is OK, but that HEAT does no DMG at all, and AP bounces off everything for some reason. As much as I love both tanks, they are currently really bad. On the same BR, I can take Vickers mk.1 and obliterate anything.
@@unclesam5733 agree, HEAT is so random and frustrating and at the reload time is basically a death sentence if you miss/don't pen/kill gunner/commander, so you have to play very carefully.
@gunther2555 Exactly. Took out M103 yesterday. Failed to side pen Centurion mk.10 3x times with the AP. Frontaly, I managed to take out his driver, lmao. Why does that AP bounce of everything? It used to be really good, I got a few nukes with that thing. I just don't understand how can 120mm AP be so bad, but I guess that's just Gaijin logic.
I'm impressed how almost 10 minutes in you had 3 enemies that actually understood and tried to coordinate around firing lanes to leave you no answer. A lot of the videos its kinda like, they saw you *bap* or your weak armor/end was available to hit. But that was just good teamwork there it seemed! Kudos to that group that day.
Was going to play the IS-3, IS-4, IS-6 but when i realized how painful is the 122mm to use and the amount of heat vehicle, i gave up and went straight for t-10 and t-54
Thank you for playing such an iconic vehicle that is very often ignored. It's appreciated to see someone giving this legend the attention it needs. Yeah, 6.7 is a tad bit overwhelming, but to my honest surprise the IS-2 1944 holds up great, showing just how good of a vehicle this really is. Love you Spook, you're based 💙 ☮️😎
this was added in the update today: "In Ground Realistic Battles, the ability to fly a nuclear carrying aircraft without leaving the current controlled vehicle has been added."
At this point I just think that Stalin misheard his generals talking about depression, thinking it had to deal with the morale of his troops, and told them to get rid of it, and everyone was too scared of him to correct or disobey him.
7:25 Personally I get it. If I die on a flank/cap, usually that flank/cap is the one I wanted to play or value the most. When I respawn, I will go back, and remember the person who killed me as I now deem them the biggest threat to my team, and my personal goals.
What I don't understand is why the IS-2s got nerfed. I understand Russian bias is a bit of a thing in War Thunder, but not for the IS-2. Even back when the 1943 model was 5.7 and the 1944 model was 6.3, they weren't considered very good because of that lengthy reload. But now they're 6.3 and 6.7 respectively and they're just not up to snuff compared to the King Tigers or the T34 heavy tank.
Not to mention that they’re also going up against tanks from the 70s and 80s in many cases. I don’t even like seeing the PT-76 to be honest, it just ruins the immersion of a WWII tank on a WWII battlefield and all the sudden seeing a light tank from the early 1950s. I’m not ready yet for the game to turn into a Korean War/ Operation Unthinkable simulator.

I appreciate the respectful way you went about having this discussion and I apologize for how long this all ended up being, I definitely could have worded several things better 😅
anyways, cheers

Since volumetric made the 122 a nightmare to use, you can try the T-44 with the 85mm gun. It's quite fast, it can sometimes tank a poorly aimed AP shell but the gun is not strong enough for most things frontally, so you gotta flank them. And seeing that you love that playstyle, i think you can make it work.

Man, I have such a love-Hate relationship with the IS-2. Sometimes it IT go boom, sometimes I go boom
Best method this far seems sidescraping while hiding the front behind a big rock or building tho, unless they got heat.

that shot on the scorpion didn't even fuse, some poor commander watched his gunner get physically removed from the vehicle by a 122

Soviet Gun depression = Your gun gives you depression
Spookston using fortune cookies to increase luck while playing war thunder is content I never knew I needed

Really like the IS-2s. Good reverse gear, decent armor. The gun hits like a train. Slow reload forces you to play carefully.
yeah... against Tiger 2's with a better gun/pen/reload rate and better armor, really fun :D

"I've been looking forward to this" - Count Dooku
Spookston be like: The gun lacks depression, but I certainly don't.
the IS-2m aka 1944 is at 6.7 because some tankers know how to use the massive gun and end up with a 6/0 kd most matches
Maybe if we all J out before starting a match with this tank, Gaijin will think that it’s performing terribly and will finally downtier it again.
