    0:21 Borders during this time changed almost monthly on occasion and there for the borders I will draw in this video are a snapshot of the borders of a kingdom only at one point and aren't representative of the borders during the whole kingdoms existence. I also draw all the borders my self according to the best sources at my disposable and there for I apologies for any border mistakes I may have done.
    0:47 The map is suppose to represent Slavic settlements not any political entities. As the Slavic people often times then not settled in already existing political entities.
    0:56 It was given by Jordanes not Procopius.
    1:40 The golden jug medallion picture I used to represent the Avars is still disputed whether it was Avar's or Bulgar's or Khazar's.
    1:39 The arrow symbolizes the movement of Lombards a Germanic tribe that lived in the lands settled by the Slavs and then pushed out by the invasion of the Avars.
    2:02 Here I describe and show the Franks as one entity however that wasn't always the case. Franks had a complicated set of dominions with varies amounts of autonomy (like Bavaria) and most succession resulted in varies break ups, wars and reforms, etc.
    3:10 Here I am showing the map of the most outer reaches of the Samo's kingdom/sphere of influence and as always it just represents a snapshot of the kingdom at its peak.
    6:08 Here I am talking about the title surviving till 1918 not necessarily the hereditary Slavic line surviving.
    9:14 It is usually said that Rastislav called for the priests because he wanted to convert the Moravian population however this has been disproved as Christian churches have been found dating decades earlier to Cyril and Methodist arrival.
    9:16 Weather the brothers where native Slavic speakers or learned it later on in their lives is unknown.
    9:30 I was trying to pronounce the English name for the alphabet which is Glagolitic. However I found it impossible to do the rest of the video pronouncing such a hard word so I reverted to the Czechoslovak name of the alphabet which is Hlaholika. (in Czech Hlaholice)
    9:30 The Alphabet was based off of the Greek alphabet and modified to fit certain Slavic sounds that didn't exist in Greek.
    11:40 The extend of Moravia was the largest under Svatopluk's reign however it's still debated how large Moravia really was. Here I am showing the largest possible extend of Moravia.
    12:20 There are more reasons then just this to why the Western Slavs use Latin alphabet and there for I specified this was partly not fully the reason. There will still be remnants of Glagolitic reinstatement in the Western Slavic lands but they will never last for long.
    13:00 We are jumping back here to explain how Hungarians became more known on the European political stage. As such please understand that the Moravian lands at this point still weren't the size as portrayed on the map.
    13:18 The internal struggles where largely due to Mojmir's II brothers who inherited varies principalities with in Moravia and subsequently tried to take over the Moravian thrown for them self's. There's also an interesting myth surrounding Svatopluk's death which you can read here. www.slovakiasite.com/legends.php
    13:41 This is very oversimplified and the Franks and Moravians didn't necessarily see eye to eye during this time but over all they did fight against the Hungarians.
    13:59 It would take a while for the German (Bohemian) and Hungarian control to fully solidify in the areas but from now they where largely under their control.
    14:49 Correction: Piast dynasty, not Mieszko dynasty
    15:09 Dobrawa bore two children to Miesko. First, Boleslaw I a successor to the Polish throne even though his reign would be very short but more interestingly a daughter. This daughter is still debated to this day and depending on what source you believe she was either Swietoslawa the wife of Eric the Victorious, king of Sweden and then later on (because he died) Sweyn Forkbeard the king of Denmark and their son will later on become Cnut the Great king of Denmark, England and Norway. Or she was Gunhilda not born to Dobrawa but to Miesko’s second Saxon wife. Gunhilda was then the one who got married to Sweyn Forkbeard and became mother of Cnut. If that’s confusing don’t worry no one really knows for sure which version is accurate. Or whether any of them are.
    15:15 Here I show the largest extend of Miesko's power however this will not last long.

    • @HaaraaldEriksson

      Partially true:
      yes, at first the nazis tried to define sorbians as "racially German", so they accordingly just oppressed the culture and language (by forbidding its use in schools, etc.) But after the Sorbian national organization Domowina distanced itself from the nazis in 1937 it quickly went south: Sorbian public intellectuals (predominantly teachers and priests) were sent off to West-Germany or even jailed and then sent to concentration camps (most famously Maria Grolmus and Alojs Andricki, among many others). Every sorbian organization was forbidden and shut down, public use of sorbian language was forbidden and punished. Very soon the Sorbians were considdered to be "Untermenschen" just as any other slavic people was.
      Also, there is a paper from around 1941 where Himmler described a plan what to do with the sorbs after the "Endsieg". Without going into details: it's not pretty. Thank god the nazis did not win.
      About the current situation of the sorbs: personally I am pessimistic as well. The main problem is, that there is not much information on the current status of the Sorbs. For example it is forbidden by law to count how many Sorbians are left (for understandable reasons, considdering what I described above). But on the other hand it makes it hard to make substantial judgements about the status of the Sorbian people. Of course, the german state is helping and funding projects to stabilize sorbian culture and language, but we don't know how effective they really are, or if they are just fine with the good PR such a policy generates.
      In my personal opinion it is up to the sorbians themselves: if they want their language and culture to survive, they have to cherish it accordingly. Teach it to the young generation, show them the sorbian culture and way of live. As long as there is at least one sorbian who loves his nation, so long the Sorbian people are not dead.

    • @HaaraaldEriksson
      @HaaraaldEriksson 6 лет назад +77

      Absolutely not. For me there are no convincing arguments why that should be.
      Culturally and linguistically we are far closer to the Czech people.
      About the history of the settlement of the Lausitz by the Sorbs there are two theories: either the Sorbs have been there since "always" (that is, as far as recorded history goes) or they moved in in the time of the great migration period (around the 5th century AD) over Poland and Bohemia. None of those two theories suggest any close link to the Serbian people.
      Really, when it boils down, the only single argument these people bring forward to support the theory of a Sorb-Serb ethnical identity is, that the words "Sorb" and "Serb" sound similar. Considering that word means "suckling" as in "brother who sucked on the same mothers breast" I think it is just a conincidence. Calling your own people a band of "milkbrothers" should not be that uncommon in my opinion. It just makes sense, that you identify such people as your group. But I do not know for certain, I am offering just some speculation here.

    • @HaaraaldEriksson
      @HaaraaldEriksson 5 лет назад +57

      Yes, I absolutely agree, that it is a shame we are not allowed to even count ourselves. Just recently in a debate in the Saxon parliament (the Landtag) members of the right-wing party AfD suggested a voluntary counting of the sorbian people by the sorbs themselves. But this suggestion was shunned down by the other parties and members of the sorbian national organization Domowina - because we can not have such a thing like a list of the sorbs, especially not if it comes from the "evil evil" right wing.
      A shame. I usually do not agree with the AfD, but with that suggestion they were in my opinion spot on in what would be the best move to preserve the sorbians long term.
      Really? I did not know that about the Silesians. I thought the Germans were completely expelled out of Poland after WW II. Well, the more you know.

      @Црни линукс
      I am not saying that this claim is definitely wrong. It is just not convincing in my opinion, because there is not sufficient evidence to support that claim. And that is why Sorbian scholars do not support that claim anymore since the beginning of the 20th century.

    Today, you can still find many Slavic names of villages and towns in Northeast Germany. Some names and places have been changed to more German, but some are still Slavic. It was similar, among others, in Eastern Pomerania, which was gradually conquered by the Germans.
    There, they usually added the suffix (-ow-) to the names of Slavic places. In addition, the German settler assumed the name of the place of settlement as his surname. For example: slavic
    Łopianowo has been changed to Loppnow / Loppenow. The ancestral seat of the von Loppenow family became the village of Loppnow / Łopianów and its surrounding lands ("..Joachim von Loppenow was settled in 1463 in the Loppenow / Łopianów estate in Prussian Pomerania .."). Currently, again Łopianów (German: Loppnow) - a village in north-western Poland, located in the Zachodniopomorskie Province, in the Gryfice County, in the Gryfice Commune.
    German colonization in Central Europe proceeded in two ways. Within the borders of countries that accepted Christianity and were recognized by Rome, it was usually a peace process, as often Czech, Polish and Hungarian rulers encouraged Germans to establish settlements in underdeveloped or sparsely populated areas.
    However, the German colonization in the areas inhabited by pagan Polabian Slavs was of a different nature. It was related to the military conquest of these areas and the imposition of one's faith and culture by force. The persecution of the Polabian Slavs by the Germans had both religious and economic grounds. They used the Christian faith as a pretext for the partitions of the Slavic lands.

    • @thepretorian5292
      @thepretorian5292 2 года назад

      Prior to slavic settlement in east germany the area was settled by east germanic tribes like vandals, ostrogoths, gepids etc. Look at roman's empire Magna Germania which encompassed till today's Belarussia.
      The east germanic tribes become extinct or assimilated with hunnic invasions from central Asia. Most east germanic tribes either migrated or enslaved by the hunns. And the migrating slavs took their place in former territories of est germany and remained there for centuries (its like how the germanic culture displaced the celtic culture in Britain) and after that the Eastern part was reconqured by the west germanic Franks.
      The area belong to germanic tribes long before the sorbs or slavs settled there.
      There is a reason why east germanic language become extinct.

    Interesting thing is that the names for Russia in Finnish and Estonian are possibly derived from Wends/Veneti. If this is the case, Russia is literally "Wendia/Venetia" (Venäjä in Finnish) and "Wendland/Venetiland" or "Land of the Wends/Veneti" (Venemaa in Estonian). This also shows the connections between the Germanic and Finnic worlds across the Baltic.

    If all Slavs would live as Poles, Czechs and Slovaks, they would be much more advanced, richer, relaxed and respected. Every time we have some dispute, it is usually pretty fast and peacefully resolved and solution is usually compromise, or at least not totally destructive for either side. Slavs have interesting culture and long European heritage. Bohemia (Czech Rep) and Poland are one of the oldest countries of Europe. Czechs ruled their first kingdom in 870 and Poles in 966. The main problem of other Slavs is inability to respect the interests of other nation. We like ourselves and consider ourselves cousins but we are also often nationalistic and consider our nations interests superior to the other nation. That causes bad blood and low respect of the others (Germanic, Latins or Anglo-saxons). By winning a war you maybe gain some land or resource, but you loose good relations for centuries. And relations are above gold or land.

      I agree, Hungarians don't consider Slovaks and Romanians cultured enough, because they are nationalists against Hungarians. Hungarian-inhabited regions are also poorer.

    Great Video.
    The information is on point and the visual support is not only very helpful, but also professionnal no less ....
    ......Mieszko was the first Polish prince and independent ruler of country with no Kingdom status and but the dynasty was not called MIESZKO, tylko - PIAST DYNASTIA - the first historical Polish ruling dynasty. Piast, son of Chościsko near Gniezno, is considered its progenitor. Piast's son, Siemowit, became the first Duke of Polans. The next ones were Lestek and Siemomysł. The first ruler of the Piast dynasty, whose historicity is not questioned, was Mieszko I. The Piasts sat on the Polish throne at least from around 960 (although in fact they entered the international arena as a dynasty after being baptized by Mieszko I in 966) until 1370.

      I abhorred history when I was in school; I’m from Romania, and our classes consisted of endless dates for wars, skirmishes, possible invasions, fighting the Ottomans etc…but concentrating info as these people do online makes it more manageable especially for someone with ADHD.
