In Polish slavs are "słowianie" from "słowo" - word. Germans are called "niemcy" from "niemy" - mute, unable to speak. This means that slavic identity is old and based on the language itself. It's hard to believe that slavs accepted not only their identity from outside, but also named their speech based on that.
I get the impression that 'Proto-Slavic' is a bit misleading. It gives people the impression that all Slavic ethnic groups branched off from one distant group, when its more likely that they were a melting pot of cultures and identities, but shared at least one common link such as migration or language.

The name of the Slavs comes from "slova", which means "word" in present and ancient Slavic languages. Various tribes were calling themselves this collective name in order to show that they can speak mutually intelligible words to each other. On the other hand, they called neighbouring Germanic tribes that were not Slavic "niemcy", meaning "mute", or "not speaking", simply because they could not understand their language. Interestingly, Romanians, who do not speak a Slavic language, borrowed this name from their Slavic neighbours and today they also call the Germans "nemti".

During the early Middle Ages, pre-Christian Bulgaria (680-864/5) was one of the most important powers of Southeastern Europe. Historians have commonly explained its survival and success in terms of a par- ticular ethnic symbiosis between Slavic commoners and Bulgar elites of Turkic origin, who ultimately gave their name to the Slavic-speaking Bulgarians. Bulgar khans, archons, or kings' ruled over territories that are now within Bulgaria and Romania. In Romanian historiography, which has traditionally viewed Romanians as a Romance-language island in a Slavic and Hungarian sea, the Bulgars play no serious role in national history. Archaeological assemblages that can be dated between the late seventh and the late ninth century are consistently attributed to "proto-Romanians." By contrast, the Bulgars are the quintessential part of Bulgarian national identity, a marker of distinction from all other histories of Slavic-speaking nations. As a consequence, studying the Bulgar (or, as it is commonly known in Bulgaria, "proto-Bulgarian") archaeology was an essential component of Bulgarian nationalism, especially in the interwar decades, as well as recently. It is only in the years after the Soviet occupation of 1944 that the emphasis in Bulgarian archaeology was forcefully shifted to the study of the Slavs."
what are you talking about? the Romanians just say "hey, don't overestimate the role of the slavs and bulgars. the land they occupied was daco-romam(Romanian) and thraco-roman(Aromanian) after all" which is so common in Bulgarian historiography. the Bulgarian identity was born from the turkic bulgar elite uniting the slavic newcomers(7th century) and thraco-romans under their rule, but then getting slavified by the oth century. the slavo-bulgars then requested hellenic assistance to create a new alphabet to make easier christianisation and to form a dialect to act as church slavonic, which they spred to the slavs(moravians, serbs, croats, russians) and latins(aromanians, romanians and indirectly, romini nigri. or the latins of illyria) the moravians and croatians became catholic and used the latin alphabet(the moravians at Magyar pressure). while most of the Romanians were stuck with the cyrillic alphabet and church spavonic for the next 800 to 1000 years. until we finally came back to the latin alphabet. the Russians are also called this because of the scandinavian germanic Rus conquest of the eastern slavic lands. so Bulgaria is not unique in this. and even in our Romanian case, the Dacians and Getians were supposedly called daha and geta because of the iranic invasion of the Agathirsi in 600BC. while they still spoke a thracian language, they adopted iranic influemces like religious elements and parts of vocabulary. it was a mini-cultursl revolution. compared to the greater cultural revolution of the 106AD conquest and the 212AD Constitutio Antoniniana.
Proto-bulgarians were a Hunnic (oghur-turkic) tribe that originated from the Mongolian plateau and made his way into the Balkans under the leadership of their khan Asparukh. Here, they formed a numerically small military ruling elite that organized the vast majority of local Slavic and Wallachian (late Roman) inhabitants they found living in these places. The contemporary Bulgarian nation only retains the name of these invaders. Linguistically they are Slavs, culturally Slavo-Hellenic and ethnic Slavo-Thracian.
The Oghuric invasion amidst the migration period depopulated much of Eastern Germanic proper cementing Slavs the main ethno-linguistic group of Eastern Europe. Bulgars, Avars, Huns all contributed to this process

"For people lining in that time no such identity existed“. I disagree, because almost all Slavs, from east to west and south, to this day call Germans - Niemci, which means mutes, and word „Slav“ itself hails not from „Sclaveni“, but from slovo - word. Ancient Slavic peoples identified themselves as „speakers of words“, while Germans were „mutes“ their words did not make any sense to Slavs thus Germans sounded to them like „mutes“, much like Greeks considered anyone who does not speak Greek language a „barbar“ian. Most likely shared identity of such „speakers of words“ existed, then byzantine Greeks modified their word slovo-slava into sclava and that is how Sclavenians became used in Greek bureaucracy.
I heard interesting story once. Marija Gimbutas and later scholars localized area of Baltic people inhabitation by hydronyms, so Baltic people inhabited large area from modern day Baltic countries in west to Vistula valley southwest and Moscow in the east and Dnieper to south, encompassing whole modern day Belarus. When Huns invaded Europe, only those who lived in Baltic countries were relatively untouched, while other tribes were mashed and mixed with one another and dragged down south by the Huns. In migration all those people started to speak in some sort of pidgin Baltic language, started to incorporate new words brought from Huns and as they were in close contact with other peoples like migrating Germanic and Iranian tribes they started to mix culturally and linguistically. After Huns were defeated they rebounded back to the said Baltic inhabitation region, their former homeland, but they were technologically and militarily more advanced than local tribes that managed to stay put. Later Avars similarly pushed them around, and this time Slavs reached Balkans and settled there. That is the reason why Slavs did not show in any earlier historical record, and started to be more prominent after Great Migration. However, how true this story is I could not verify, but it is interesting notheless.
Yeah, as opposed to word " Niemcy" which in almost every Slavic languange means ' mute people' and it is translated as Germans. This video is bassicaly 20 minutes of repeating ' We are not sure"
@@kosa9662 Yes, because we do not know for sure, so why would they lie? There is a difference between "slava" and "slovo", both words are Slavic and both are very old, as well as important in early Slavic culture. We can find Slovo in some ethnonyms: Slovenians, Slovakians and we can find Slava in at least hundereds of various Slavic proper names: Slavomir, Slavonia, Borislav etc. Some Slavic people even greet eachother everyday by saying it. Both of these words maybe cognates. When sombody is "slavny" (famous) it means that people talk about that person, they praise him with "slovo". One of the most known Slavic literature from medieval times is called "Slovo o pl’’ku Igorevě" - "The word about Igor's regiment". The theory about people of slovo that speak the same language vs. Nemcy/Niemcy who are mute - does not speak the same language, makes sense, but modern people also belittle the importance of the concept of 'fame/glory' in pagan indoeuropean cultures. Being renown and respected seemed equal to being immortal. Greek "kleos" is lit. cognate of "slava" from PIE 'klewos', it sounds much more similar to Latin: Sclaveni, Sclavi, Sclauini or Greek: Sklabēnoi, Sklauēnoi, Sklavinia .etc. So I would not cross out the "slava theory", while again, "slovo" and "slava" maybe be cognates, just like Greek "kleos" - glory and "kluein" - to hear. I recommend you to watch the video about "Tripartite Soul of Indo-European Tradition" from canal - Survive the Jive, because he explains there very well what "kleos" was for Indoeuropeans.
It should also be noted that a large part of northern Russia was inhabited by the Uralic peoples (ancestors of the Finns, Estonians, Hungarians and other smaller peoples). During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Kievan Rus lived mostly peacefully with them, until Muscovy Russia began to subjugate the Uralic peoples from the 15th century. Today, they number only a fraction of what they originally were.
@@arghunpride5704 Russian nationalists don't want to admit that many of them have Finno-Ugric ancestry: Lenin was of Mordvin origin, Yeltsin had Ugric forefathers, and Putin has Vepsian ancestry.
I find it interesting how such a large portion of Slavs were historically led by Germanic, Turkic, and Baltic dynasties. Many Slavic ethnonyms today stem from former non-Slavic overlords like the Germanic Rus and Turkic Bulgars/ians
I'd rather use word shameful than interesting. Well at least western slavs were more resilient to foreign conquest and talented in terms of creating their own states. Czech Przemyslids even ruled the german empire for a time. And while Poland indeed had lithunanian Jagiellon dysnasty, it was clearly Polish culture that dominated the Commonwealth. So yeah. Like every nation's history. Some things to be proud of, some to be ashamed of...
@@italianspaghett4359 there is nothing to be ashamed of this. It is mostly geography, economics, politics that determine which ethnic group will be dominant over others rather than individual competence or bravery of people.
@@italianspaghett4359 I do not think it is shameful at all, most of countries especialy empires were ruled by foreigners for some time: ancient Babylon, Egypt, Rome. National identity before 18th century did not exist, or at least it was viewed completely different. Aristocrat families are generaly multiethnic, thats why somebody could say that UK is ruled by German nobles, but it would be understatement. Rurikids became Slavic very fast, same with Lithuania that was "slavized" before even unting with Poland, because most of the Lithuanian nobles were actually Rus/Ruthenian people, many descendants of Rurikids were among them as well. Slavs and Germanic/Nordic people mixed their dynasties all the time and nobody viewed it as lost of autonomy. The mother of Cnut the great - Danish king of England, was Polish princess, I do not hink that any Gemranic person is ashamed of that.

You are missing ancient city's of Southern Ural Mountains. Famous Arkaim. It is 4,000 years ago. Genetic R1A. Now scientists can trace ancient peoples movement by genetics.
Cornelius Tacitus claimed that the Venedi tribes lived in the north and east of the Carpathian Mountains. The famous Ptolemy called them a very large tribe and claimed that they lived on the coast of the Gulf of Venedi (now the Baltic Sea). Herodotus, listing the tribes of the Baltic lands, calls them "Eneti". European scholars associate the Zarubynets culture with them. Some scholars associate the Kyivan archaeological culture with them, some argue that the Chernyakhiv archaeological culture should be associated with them, and some try to link the now well-known Zubrytska archaeological culture with them. Given the statements of well-known and not-so-well-known scholars, we tend to link them to Ukrainian lands. And we should probably agree that in the vast expanse from the Baltic Sea to the Carpathians, from the Odra River to the glorious Slavutych (Dnipro), the late Zarubynets tribes under the common name VENEDs lived.
The English word "thēow" was replaced by an Old French word derived from medieval "sclave" which referred to Slavic peoples who were taken and traded as slaves throughout the Mediterranean for the entire medieval period. Most of these slaves were imported by Islamic kingdoms. It continued well into the Ottoman era. The Arabic word for slave "saqlabī" is derived from Greek "sklaveni" refering to a Slavic person.
The Sarmatians (the mythical ancestors of Polish gentry) were not Slavs... They were Iranians... There were also a lot of Persian merchants travelling to Polish lands in the Dark Ages to sell their goods to native Slavic people... So you should not associate all Slavic nations entirely by their alleged Slavic origin... This is a huge mistake !
I really want to be petty over the video title. The video is a series of "we're not sure" and "there are several theories". The use of the singular 'origin' suggests there is one answer, and that this video will provide it, but that's not the case. A more accurate title would be as a question: "What is the origin of the Slavic people?" which is far more open to all options for how to answer.
So the Bulgars (Proto-Bulgarians) were Turkic tribes. Then around the 6th century the Slavs came, and they mixed with the natives. That explains why Bulgarians, and South Slavs, are often quite dark and some do not resemble Slavic people at all.
"Belarusian" - is pronounced differently comparing to "russian". It comes from the name "Belarus". Belarusian: /ˌbɛləˈruːsiən/ Sounds like "BELL-uh-ROO-see-uhn" . So inside there is a sound "rus" not "rush". comparing to russian: /ˈrʌʃ.ən/ Sounds like "RUSH-uhn"
Slavs are definitely ethnic group because we have slavic languages which originates from single source. Offcourse during time some non Slavs become Slavs, just like all other nations during time.
since the topic is obviously very political it is full of disclaimers and a bit wishy washy. Urheimat - that's definitely not a slavic term and smells a bit like xix century race theory on the origins of certain peoples

What about word SLOVO = a letter, as origins of the name? Slovo, not literal literacy, but (maybe) as a device to tall a story. Don't forgot that Germans are Nijemci on almost all Slavic languages, or those who can't speak, those that are mute, maybe even don't know how to write/tell a story.
You really need to learn about Baltic region, you put Slavs there like5 times in the video. It's very lame to make a video about Slavs, and don't even know their neighbours or their regions.
Many of the things that Procopius and Jordanes wrote don't make sense. For example, the rebellion of 531 and Slavic incursions in the region. For example, in one Slavic raid, when they crossed the Danube, they were joined by the locals, with whom they shared the language. History teaches us that the region was inhabited by the Romans. Okay, if that's true, since when did locals join a raiding party on their land, and they spoke a Slavic language? The Roman province of Iliricum had 10 legions we all learned about the Ilirain wars and so on....Why didn't they rise up against the Slavs then or even try to form any state???Why should a tribe or people that is known to be agricultural (farmers) go live in the rocky mountains of the Balkans and eat what stones??It would be more propriate to call them Slovemi because the word Slovi means the one who speaks...As for example Slovencina how the Slovaks pronounce it....Slava is a word that means glory by the Serbs its a day celebrating a family patreon or guardian (before pagan gods now saints) (mine is St George) a practice that was in use even before the Romans conquered the Balkans....If you ask me Slavs are more of a linguistic group of various peoples than a homogenous ethnicity like the germanic tribes....

For what it's worth, Estonian and Finnish words for Russia(n) seem to be related to this Veneti term. Estonian: Vene, Finnish: Venäjä
14:10 doesn't the word "Slavs" literally come from slavic words "sloveninu" which likely mean "people who shared the same speech"?
Glory also the slaves escaped by Spartacus or Attila the Hun .. 😉☮️☯️

Slavic history is very fascinating, my favorite myth is honestly the tale of the three brothers and how that led nations with mmigrations.
There are still sorbs and wends around in Eastern Germany
Thank you,I was just thinking about learning more about the Slavic region
I find it interesting how such a large portion of Slavs were historically led by Germanic, Turkic, and Baltic dynasties. Many Slavic ethnonyms today stem from former non-Slavic overlords like the Germanic Rus and Turkic Bulgars/ians
Slave race
I sure hope this will be a calm and peaceful family get together.

As much we are different, we can't live without eachother, either cause of economy, religion or simply we have same language, with different accents.

So inside there is a sound "rus" not "rush".
comparing to
russian: /ˈrʌʃ.ən/ Sounds like "RUSH-uhn"

This won't be controversial.. AT ALL. 😅 😅
Why would it?
So all in all no one knows anything about slavic origin, 18mins wasted
Slava also means glory
Ok, but nobody asked you.
