What’s going on guys and welcome back to the channel! Over the course of my years being an enthusiast, it’s safe to say I've ridden my fair share of wooden coasters, and as I’m sure some of you might agree, nothing beats a good ol’ fashion woodie. But the other day I found myself looking into a potential trip back to Kings Island for The Beast, which is the world’s longest wooden coaster, which got me wondering what other wooden record holders I was missing. Well, my research led me to one in Michigan, one that good friend Marc from CoasterDash recently rode, and it looks AWESOME! Opening in 1998, this thing is an absolute airtime machine, and has a pretty cool history in its design and operations backing it. Not to mention I’ve heard some wild stories about it from you guys. So what is it? And where did it come from? This is the story, of Michigan Adventure’s, Shivering Timbers! 🌲🎢

The same thing kind of happened with Ghostrider. It was amazing when it first opened, then fell off a cliff in terms of roughness. Once they remodeled, it improved again.

They redid a bit of shivering timbers and it's running a lot smoother in 2024 then it was when I rode it in 2019.

I was at MA for Timbers Fest in May, and had been in 2019, and Shivering Timbers is, in my opinion, best described as if Magnum XL-200 were made out of wood. It goes on forever and that final helix gives absurd laterals. Not to mention the incredible standing airtime from the first few hills.

This ride is awesome! I went to Michigans Adventure for the 4th of July this year and rode it 8 times. A lot of the rough parts from last year have been retracked for this season, it was running really good

As a local resident (MiAdv is only 15 minutes from my house), I've ridden ST many times. I am glad they removed the trick-track as it was so severe it left many people with headaches after riding. After retracking, it was much better, but I believe that nature is contorting the ride again and it may be in need of serious consideration of retracking again. I just rode it about the time you posted this video and there is a bad "hop" on the first or second drop that feels like you are being dropped in a chair off the back of a truck. I have to agree with Mark's assessment 3:15 that the bottom valleys are painfully rough. The helix at the end puts so much strain on one's back after surviving the repeated valleys that one ride is generally enough for me. I usually wait until late in the day to ride it so that if it's too much, I can leave while still feeling like I had a great day.
Unfortunately, with Cedar Fair's 2001 purchase of MiAdv and then the planned merger of Cedar Fair with Six Flags announced in 2023, I don't see this coaster (or park) getting the much needed attention. When CF bought the park in 2001, the park saw many improvements, including new rides and massive upgrades to the water park and Camp Snoopy. However, that has waned over the last decade and the park is starting to get the feel that Geagua Lake had in the years leading up to its demise. Rides get repainted to spruce them up, but nothing major has been added since 2008 when Thunderhawk was installed after being relocated from GL after it closed. Really hoping that the merger turns things around for the better for this great gem of a park in West Michigan.

Yeah this park is an udder joke. shitty operations, are short staffed, they need to sell it off. The original family should have never sold it. The last original coaster built here was 25 years ago lol

I live 30 minutes away from Michigan's adventures. Im old enough to remember when this was built. We also have the wildcat which is another big wooden coaster in the park. It's crazy to me to see this roller coaster still standing and operating after all these years. My childhood was spent here. So glad to see you cover it! Make the time to come visit whenever you can! You will not be disappointed

Coney Island in Cincinnati before it became Kings Island, used to have the Wildcat rollercoaster back in the 50s and 60s. I wonder if it's the same Wildcat?? As a kid it was my favorite ride.

That only CCI coaster I’ve ridden is Boulder Dash. It can have a little rattle at times and doesn’t have many airtime moments but in the moments you get airtime, it’s awesome!

    • @MattMcIrvin

The last time I rode Boulder Dash, it was jackhammering pretty hard--to the point that I was kind of alarmed. That was in 2022, before the most recent retracking with some Titan Track, but my impression is that the Titan Track is only on the first drop. So I wonder how it's riding now.

It was the last operating coaster in the US with a trick-track. Once they removed it, Mega Zeph at SFNO is the only coaster in the US (possibly the world) with a trick-track.

This is the ride that got me into roller coasters back on June 6, 2000. I would love to see either The Gravity Group install their prefabricated track on the ride, or have Great Coasters International give it the GhostRider treatment, and bring back the trick track.

The roughness of shivering timbers gets way over-stated. It's not that bad, especially for its age. It definitely doesn't run at quite the same speed it did 20 years ago though. The camelbacks used to give pretty powerful ejector airtime but now its more of a sustained, choppy floater. Still an incredible ride though. Will always be my personal #1 for being my gateway in to becoming an enthusiast.

I grew up with this park since I live about 15 mins away. This was my coaster standard because I didn't know any different. I will say it makes the other coasters I have been on very underwhelming xD Definitely worth a ride if you get the chance.

I rode it on Tuesday & Wednesday this week, and this thing was BRUTAL!!!!! I can tolerate quite a bit of roughness on woodies, but this was far too much for me in most seats. Only in row 1 and row 11 could I somewhat tolerate the roughness with only a little pain.
The reason I kept on riding in spite of the roughness is because the airtime is so good. Every hill delivers, but if you want ejector airtime, it doesn't quite get there. It's very strong floater that is sometimes sustained, and it could be called mild ejector. I do think that type of airtime is the best, which had me wanting to find a row that wasn't terribly rough, but I couldn't find one. The ride was a walk-on, even on a busy Tuesday, because most people didn't want to ride again. I hope the park does some work on it like they've done with Wolverine Wildcat, which was running awesome.

I was there a good month ago, and My feelings about the ride are mixed. Sure, the layout is phenomenal, there's no doubt. But it is unbearably rough, it beats you to a pulp, completely relentless. And I love forceful rides, but there is a clear difference between the forces a ride was designed to have and just being beaten up like this coaster does. And to add insult to injury, a ride of this duration with just one train and a crew that is slow to even dispatch this one train makes for a pretty bad experience. I'd love to see this coaster get a major overhaul, maybe with GCI's Titan Track, putting a second train on it and it'd be up there in the elite coaster league again. But Cedar Fair, whatever you do, DON'T RMC THIS COASTER!

Please no. There are rides with great layouts that can be retracted (this, Ghostrider, Hades) and there are rides with boring layouts that can/should be rmc’d (wildcat lc, every rcca). Not every rough wooden coaster needs rmc.
