    I do most of my shopping twice a year. The rest of the year I do ‘shopping behaviours ‘. By the time I purchase my wish list is so curated that i feel confident in my purchases, and so familiar to me that getting new things feels like an errand. I find I always need to want something, and this drags out wanting the same thing, and spaces out the purchases.

    So - one person's perspective - but I loved when your replacements were included in the budget because a limited resource reveals so much about our priorities! For example, what we say (i.e. "I hate my underwear") and what we do (i.e. not replace our underwear every month when the budget is refreshed and the bank account is full) vary because when push comes to shove, there are just other items that consistently were prioritized, which is so telling about what we love!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  3 года назад +6

      yep, that's why I did it last year, and it did reveal a lot of interesting things about my priorities and behavior! But I've been much happier with this year's model. I'll try to circle back and explain in further in an end-of-year wrap-up video.

    I have always done seasonal spending. For me its usually 3 times a year: for my birthday which is in August, for Christmas/New Year, and around the begining of summer. I look for quality, design, craftmanship, ethical practices/sustainability and/or local small brands, and I also prefer unique pieces...all of this usually means I have expensive taste! But my budget is small and I do not want to get into credit card debt...so I save up for 3-4 months and make wishlists in the meantime. I give myself permission to buy guilt free whatever is 1) still on the wishlist after months of tweaks and changes and 2) still available from the seller when the money is finally saved up. I do include replacements in this system because it forces me to really be conscientious of what and why I am purchasing and item. This ended up longer than expected 😅 sorry.

      That's how I spend my budget too. I tend to spend a bunch at the beginning of each season and don't spend again until I saved up a bunch. I exclude replacements in this budget because usually those numbers are very very low and far inbetween. I spend the most in the summer and winter!

      I agree, it's such a simple design. You could buy a new basic sewing machine and a few yards of fabric for the price of the dress.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  3 года назад +17

      maybe one day! my machines are in storage, and it would definitely take some trial and error to figure out a new design. I get this question a lot (about why I don't make more of my own clothes), and it can be hard to explain, but I know from experience that the time it would take me to figure it out (time away from my billable hours at grant writing and paid YT work), plus the cost of the materials that I would end up using in the trial and error process, plus the cost of actual materials for the dress...added all together it would end up costing me way, way more than the price of this dress! I'd have made it myself, but it would basically be a thousand-dollar dress :)

    I love that your underwear are not in your beauty budget, but rather a separate budget. I find this way of thinking helpful because I am someone who has a lot of guilt about spending. By thinking of my moisturizer or shampoo as necessities that will come out of my main budget, I have less guilt. And my beauty budget can be spent on more fun things! Tangentially related: I am in a phase where I want to want something (I know you know that feeling) but I already have everything I need, and plenty I don’t. I guess it’s the upcoming election stressing me out but I’m feeling that familiar pull to retail therapy. I don’t have a history of overspending so I’m not worried about getting into debt or anything, but I just know that owning 7 handbags instead of 6 isn’t going to make me happier. Sigh.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  3 года назад +3

      yes, it's been really interesting to do it both ways (as part of the budget and then as not part)! I think it only works because I have enough self-control not to use the replacements as an excuse to go overboard, and it makes me glad that I haven't done that. I feel you with the "want to want" phase. It's a tough moment!

    Just in regards to the Nuuly dress - you might want to check out the Gorman brand (based in Australia) they have similar styles of prints and what I consider house dresses as well.
    I’m actually in the process of purchasing a new linen house dress as well - I love having something easy to pop on after work or during the weekend that looks nice that you don’t have to think about. I know I’ll get a lot of wear out of it, but I’m struggling to purchase at full price from a site that I know does discounts! I might just push the button at some point this weekend .... (It is from the New Zealand brand Nyne if anyone is nosey :) )

    I find these videos so helpful. Hearing you process your wants and needs and show your love in details. It's helping me think about what matters to me. I tend to either restrict myself too much and keep leaving things I NEED in my online cart.. or I will open the flood gates and I will get silly and excited and buy more than needed. I'm trying to learn its ok not to penny pinch but choose stuff that brings joy and just pay more at the time I need it. It's actually really hard learning that balance so I love these videos and hearing you way up not just the items but when you will need them.
    I've been prepping ahead for things I will want such as lisa eldridge and terramoons.. Bar those I've been on a low/no buy until black friday and even for that I have a list of items I'm interested in so I'm not caught up in the silliness of it all.

    I'm so here for the feast & famine content! Basically, that's what I've been doing for years now. Shopping just isn't a day to day activity for me and I agree that this is actually freeing. I tend to get quite obsessive with basically anything, so shopping (reseraching, online shopping, going shopping in stores, trying on, making choices, returning etc.) is really stressing me out. It helps my mental health to limit the time periods I'm dealing with all of this. But I'm still not where I want to be yet. Probably I could limit the actual shopping time frames further, restrict my wishlist, working on me constantly wanting new / better things, reducing my scarcity mindset and much more. I would love to go on this journey with you. I'm often fed up with myself and want buying new things to be something enjoyable while also being content in the meantime and using my energy for more important things.

    Ooohh a hidden treat, we got a sneak peak at your project for next year!! So exciting. I use a bit of a mix between beauty budgeting and seasonal. So I do have a monthly budget but unless I reaaally can't wait for something (usually can) I'll just let the money roll over until I've amassed a good chunk and then do a haul. I still plan in those months what I'd like to buy and write it down but just hold off. I feel like hauls that have restricted budget let the things on my wishlist battle it out so I only select the best rather than losing that comparative quality between purchases if they were dispersed over time

    I too have been stalking beautiful DÔEN dresses of late! They look so dreamy, effortless, classic, but so not in my budget! I will try to save and buy one next year! I appreciate the review of the undergarments. I've been looking for some for months because I want them to be very plain (no names or designs on the outside or other fussy business), ethical, comfortable, and modestly priced. Seasonal shopping only with no buys in between sounds like an interesting experiment! Maybe your subscribers will try it with you!

    You're such an inspiration for me, Hannah! I've been watching your videos three years now. I've just started seriously budgeting this past month, and it has been so hard. I just tallied up my numbers, and I'm over in almost every category. However, I know I'm over by less than I would have been if I had not budgeted, so I guess that's some progress, right? Because my numbers weren't too bad, I can treat November as a blank slate and try again with my same budgeted amounts. Trying to look at this month as information gathering as opposed to a failure, because I really didn't know what I was dealing with before.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  3 года назад +1

      yes, I think knowing that you are over by less than you would be if you hadn't budgeted is KEY. I would have liked to spend less this year, too (who wouldn't?) but I know that if I had never done a no-buy and become a person who budgets, I would probably have spend ten thousand dollars this year instead of two. And THAT is what matters.

    for seasonal budgets/shopping i’ve been doing it for about 2 decades now and can give a few points: 1) never buy full price. 2) never skimp on quality: a pair of boots that costs 1k $/€ “in season” in 3 months will be max 500 in 3 months and they last at least 10-12 years so price per year is max 50. and because of the quality level even in year 12 you’ll still have good boots and get compliments on it. plus if you calculate cost per wear you’ll be making money from an accounting perspective. 3) don’t spend on trends unless small accessories to spice up timeless pieces. 4) buy shoes from shoe companies, handbags from handbag companies and clothing from clothing companies. for example a louis vuitton bag in the waxed canvas can be anywhere from 300 to 1200 (they don’t do sales) but the construction and durability makes them last that you will be able to pass them on to your daughter, while a bag from moschino won’t last for more than 2 years in spite having it repaired and i really “mistreat” my hand bags. 5) think about what you actually need each season and invest in that. for example this season i really need a pair of comfortable low hell boots but that are also tall as i live in a cold climate, so am waiting for the sales as a mid-market brand of shoes that you don’t have in the states that costs around 300 will not last at least 10 years but more like 3, while a pair from bally on sale will be 500 or 600 but i’ve bought a pair from them in 2007 and they are still in excellent condition. it really is the practice of “we’re too poor to buy cheap things” which is the reality when you do the math of boots that i love bought 13 years ago for 600 that i got compliments on this tuesday. that’s less than 50 a year, while a pair of 50 dollar or euro boots look cheap, are made cheaply in some asian country in god knows what conditions and the materials are all synthetic which are normally oil product derivatives which are not biodegradable, while a pair of boots made in italy by an artisan that is paid more than the management (was in the fashion/ luxury business there so know the details), with premium quality leather is biodegradable and also made with love and attention to detail. 6) never buy prada: their business model is to make things that don’t last so you repurchase 7) buy items made in europe ideally italy or france as the work conditions there are incredible for the artisans, as most american brands don’t manufacture in the usa anyway. so after writing a short essay feel free to message me if you gave any questions

    Oh I love the idea of a seasonal budget, never thought or heard about that before. But I think it makes good sense. As the seasons change I definitely feel inspired and want/need to update some clothing/makeup/decor items etc. Also, like you used to be, I can be good with my spending for a few months and then all hell breaks loose and the credit card takes a beating. So maybe this would fit how it seems I’m predisposed to function, but hopefully with a bit more thought going into it. I’m going to look into it some more for myself, but would definitely be interested in seeing your take on this too.
    So do it Hannah, do it, do it, do it...........Ok, bye ❤️

I got the idea from the Anna edit. I like the idea, as you said, that it makes me think about shopping less and spend less time doing it throughout the year.

  • @f.i.4093
    @f.i.4093 3 года назад

    You phrased the concept of budgeting so well! Not „pennypinching“, but putting your spendings into perspective.
    I also tend to buy in seasons, mostly because my salaries vary per month, but also because I tend to spend my money more considerate that way and overall feel happier to invest once in an area and be done with it. For example, I replaced a whole chunk of old sportswear, underwear and my 10 year old hiking shoes in July, and I won’t have to spend money on those items for years. Instead of constantly spending 50$ per month and being grumpy about how little or bad quality I can afford, I‘ll bite the bullet - and I sure end up spending less in the long run. I personally just have to check that I don‘t have too many spending clusters per year and that I remain clear and honest about what I can afford in a year.

Did your windowshpping habits die because of the no buy. I seriously fall down on the buying little things here and there without thinking and forgetting they add up!!

    Aha! This video came at the absolute perfect time for me. Not only am I always excited whenever I see a new episode of HLP’s critically acclaimed “What I Bought This Month”, but I am also in dire need of underwear. I’ve been putting off doing the research to find a nice, simple, ethical underwear brand for ages and am thrilled to know where to go now. I just purchased 5 pairs. Thank you so much!! Also, that Doen dress is absolutely amazing. It’s gorgeous and I hope to see it pop up in your upcoming clothing haul! I love seeing your thoughts and opinions on clothing, they’re so refreshingly substantive; at some point, I’d love to see what you think of some of Sezane’s clothes. They’re a brand that has some pieces that are a little more wild than I tend to go for, but every so often have something I’m into. I’d be curious if anything they offer is up your alley!

    • @parcheesy33
      @parcheesy33 3 года назад

      Hey Maria - I wanted to check out Sezane but had trouble finding info on their manufacturing practices. At first I thought they must be ethical b/c their prices are quite high but I can't find any confirmation so I think the might just be expensive?

    • @mariaordal2510
      @mariaordal2510 3 года назад +1

      @@parcheesy33 They're definitely more opaque than I would like. They claim to have good manufacturing practices, but beyond a few videos, there's not much to support that. They use a better-than-average amount of "sustainable" or recycled fabrics, which is nice, but not quite enough. I like some of their styles, but stay away from their polyester and synthetic blend pieces. Otherwise, the quality of construction is pretty decent. Do you know of any good (actually ethical) brands? It's a constant search!

    • @parcheesy33

      @@mariaordal2510 Thanks for the intel! I really want them to be transparent/ethical but maybe they're not there yet. I really like Outerknown and Amour Vert so far, but definitely simpler/more beachy designs.

    I am thinking the same for next year. This year I'm doing a strict numbered low-buy for clothes (my weakness!). Next year I'm cutting the number again to 21 items and I've decided to structure it seasonally like this:
    4 items in March for Spring
    1 treasure in April (for my beginning of May birthday)
    4 items in June for Summer
    4 items in September for Autumn
    4 items in December for Winter
    4 free pieces to spend throughout the year - leaving room for fate!

    I LOVE the idea of like a quarterly haul. It will be so much fun when you do it to feel like you got to get either a lot of stuff, or one really nice thing. But I do wonder if I did this, would I obsess over what I’m going to buy? What if you did a small $30-$50 budget monthly, the quarterly you did a haul with whatever is leftover plus an additional $2-300

    I LOVE getting slightly crazy printed casual-leaning dresses from Nuuly as rentals. They are "enough" for the office and casual lawyer things both in person and in zoom, they often tick my preference for quirky clothes boxes, since otherwise I wear a lot of black/navy/gray with one pop of color, they are comfortable and fun, and most of the time they are something that I wouldn't buy. But occasionally I do, since I am now onto my second year of Nuuly and renting things I've rented multiple times, so the prices are really fair and reasonable. I also rented a black tie waist jumpsuit with super wide legs, something I would probably never even think to try on. I wore it on my birthday with heels. I wore it another time with chucks and a cardi and it's so reasonable, I will likely buy it, along with this chunky wool short sleeved sweater that I think I've rented 5 times. I usually rent 4 things that are completely solid, I know will work, practical things, and then 2 things that are utterly wacky either in style or cut and it just works tremendously well for me and then allows me to stalk forever pieces until I find the right thing at the right price (it helps that places like Nordstrom are running almost constant 40-60% sales and eBay is flourishing). I may do a closet declutter this weekend now that I have enough experience with Nuuly and ebay/poshmark some things because I need a distraction stronger than work to prevent me from consantly refreshing the WaPo page. I am so glad I mindfully chose to save these videos for today, knowing I needed them for sanity sake.

    I love the boden shirt and shift and wrap dresses. They have the in cotton linen and jersey. And it s so lovely high quality and lovely prints. I have a couple of printed casual dresses from them that have kept well. On actual shirt dresses i do recommend zara. I have cotton shirtdresses ( love specifically white and light blue one and a an eye of the horus print ). And then i know zara is fast fashion but for cotton shirts and cotton dresses the quality has proved quite good. I m not a tshirt person and i have 5 y old shirts that look really crisp

    In a previous video you mentioned interest in the PML pallets because you wanted the special texture shades. Kinkysweat, who is a PML connoisseur, said in her last PML video that she thinks the holiday quads this year only have one special shade and that the holiday quads from last year, which I believe are still available on the PML website had either 3 or 4 special shades. The quads from last year cost a little more than this years quads too. I can neither confirm nor deny this info but just in case you were considering purchasing the quads it may be worth confirming.

    Before youtube and all the consumerism crazyness I used to buy only about 4 times a year....Memorial Day Sales, 4th of July Sales and Black Friday....there was a few other points where I'd shop for specific things here and there (mattress/homeware on presidents day, electronics on back to school season). Funny enough after looking at my budget I pretty much go on 'feast and famine' cycles naturally, big blow out sale of my favorite brand in April, then no-buy makeup for the rest of the summer. Once a year sale of my favorite skincare, then 3 month no buy on that category etc etc

    That dress is unique and it looks very comfortable. I would need to inspect the dress in person, but as a seamstress it looks like a very basic design. It can be sewn quickly, it doesn't have a unique fit, cut, or lining. $289 is excessive for what is being offered. I could buy a lot of material and make several dresses.
