    I was diagnosed with PCOS about ten years ago in my early 20s. I was insulin resistant and hadn’t had a period in almost a year. My gynecologist prescribed metformin and birth control. She also told me to start weight watchers because it was a “heart healthy” diet. Eight years went by, no change. My hair started to fall out so she prescribed spironolactone.
    I heard about keto in 2017 but it terrified me because saturated fat makes you have heart attacks right?! But I was at my whit’s end so I decided to give it a try. I told my gynecologist I was stopping all meds and I would check in with her in 3 months.
    I started keto in March 2018 and I had my first real period in a decade in April! My hair stopped falling out. I finally started losing weight. My insulin resistance disappeared. My cholesterol dropped. My PCOS completely resolved itself and I’ve been on no prescription pills since! Keto changed my life!!!

    Was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17, they put me on Metformin and birth control. I was so sick on the medication but they kept telling me to just stick with it and it will get better, and they said that the best way to reverse it was to lose weight but with PCOS it was near impossible to lose weight so good luck. Well, after 10 years of constantly being sick, in pain, having doubled my weight on the medications and in a fog, I stopped the Metformin and birth control and started a Keto diet. I lost 80lbs, my skin is better, my hair is trying to grow back and my glucose numbers are normal. Please remember, this is my story and what I had to do to get better, I am not saying just stop your medications on your own, but the Keto diet saved me, so I do recommend looking into it for PCOS.

    I started watching you 6 months and 62 lbs ago. I started this journey apprehensively as I was fighting the voices in my head of our public school education on healthy eating and my family's traditional diet of heavy heavy bread/carbs. ( my mom and her 15 siblings often speak of the sugar sandwiches that they took to school as that was what they had. ) I have PCOS and had just resigned myself to enduring all that that entailed. Finding you gave me hope. I do not say that lightly. I feel so much better than I have felt in years. I was headed towards type 2 diabetes (like the majority of my family) at an almost for certain pace. I never comment on anything but today your video just absolutely made me feel such overwhelming gratitude that I had to try to let you know that you have changed the direction my health was headed in. THANK YOU! You explain things in an easy, sometimes a bit sassy, way that is relatable and yet when I need a kick in the but you are there with that too. I’m a first year med student and went to a diabetes conference a few weeks ago.
    They went over drugs and treatments, but not once did I hear carnivore. Keto and omad were mentioned briefly towards the very end but completely glossed over. The speaker said that the American population isn’t willing to do keto and omad, and didn’t say any more about any of those topics. So sad.
    I love reading on this channel about people’s comments like how keto, fasting, etc helped lower their A1C levels. As a future physician, it’s definitely what I’ll be recommending to my patients.
    I go to a school in CA and the conference was in Cali as well.

    • @penultimania4295
      @penultimania4295 2 года назад +4

      Well that is the sad truth though. Big pharma make an obscene amount of money because people want the 'easy' way out. They don't want to give up the food they love (or rather are addicted to). They live in denial that their health condition is not something they caused themselves (albeit unintentionally due to lack of knowledge) because they don't want to take responsibility for their own life.

    • @lily5952
      @lily5952 2 года назад +3

      @@penultimania4295 I think you have a definite point in how some people want the 'easy way' (meds) when dealing with diabetes and other lifestyle diseases. A lot of people put blind trust in their doctors without thinking critically or seeking a second opinion. Some people think that if they take the meds they can still eat processed junk all day everyday like it's a magic pill. Part of that is lack of general nutritional education. Doctors aren't focusing on diet, and they are not really taught in medical school about diets which i think is insane. I think socioeconomic reasons like poverty poverty and adequate access to medical care are also major factors of how people choose to deal with their chronic disease.

She had a softball sized cyst removed at the beginning of this summer. Another has already grown to that size with her very high carb diet. Thankfully, her doctor has now said that keto will help her so she is on the right track, but she will likely lose that ovary because she didn't want to listen earlier. 😥

      @@lisag18it's true because there are a lot of time to where doctors misdiagnose patients, push pills that they don't need, don't listen to them and when you ask for a certain blood test it is like pulling teeth! A lot of them just think about the $$$ they are going to get instead of actually helping their patients. NOT ALL ARE LIKE That BUT MOST ARE! I lost my Co worker a month ago who was misdiagnosed and had the doctor looked deeper, she would have gotten the help she needed and would have still been alive! I also believed that she had PCOS as well because she had some facial hair on her chin just like me. They thought she had the stomach flu and acid reflux but it was far more serious than that... she was rushed to the hospital, had emergency surgery and then her blood pressure went dangerously low where she was on life support and as a result her organs failed and she died. Outrageous!

    I’ve had severe pcos for 35+ years. I’m 49. I’ve always said it was 3 times harder for me to lose weight than other people, and I was right!!! 😂 I cut out all carbs and sugar and basically went paleo-keto 20+ years ago, but I’ve still had lots of problems. I only had 1 natural period in my life, when I was 14. Docs told me I had to be on birth control, so I did that until I had a hysterectomy at 30. I tried going off the pill a few times and just never had periods- but I felt a lot better off of them. I’ve had 22
    cyst ruptures that all should have put me in the ER. The foundational research on pcos was done in the 70s, but conventional medicine still doesn’t act on it. They just prescribe the pill!! It breaks my heart to think about how different my life could have been if I had been educated in my teens. It’s been a lot of misery… Thankfully I keep learning more all the time. I just started a trial period of mostly carnivore, with some leniency for things like avocados at times. I’m hopeful it will help. I did drink some alcohol over the years (mostly vodka, tequila or whiskey to minimize sugar), and kombucha, there were little ways sugar snuck in.

    Hello Dr Berry. I enjoy and share your content often. Please don't ever stop. Low Carb has fixed my daughter's PCOS. I do have an unrelated question. Is there a down side to tanning beds? I use to use them when I was younger as a way to jump start a tan for summer and sometimes I maintained a tan through the winter. What's the latest on their use?

      Hi, I hope you have found some help. I have been doing keto since April and am diabetic and postmenopausal. I hope you have a doctor that you can contact asap as I suspect you need your medication lowered or tapered off to avoid those low blood sugars, they are not fun or safe. I have been having low levels also this week and hope to be off my pills soon and have been tapering off of them. You and your doctor can come up with a plan for you. At one time in my life I was just under 500lb and on very large doses of Insulin. Over the years prior to keto I got my weight down to 385 and stopped Insulin and was on oral meds. As my weight varies my medication needs have changed up and down. I think my insulin resistance got alot worse in recent years as in the past when I lowered my carbs I no longer needed any medication, but being 66 yr old it has been much slower to improve. Of course thyroid and other issues dont help. I am down to 355 now and seem to not need as much meds. I think too much cheese and nuts has resulted in lower weight loss for me than alot of people report. I have stopped that about 10 days ago, and things are greatly improving. So please talk with your doctor and keep up all your efforts. Good Luck to you!

The doctor finally saw the need to take me from 4 diabetic meds down to 2. I’m feeling much better and I’m steady in the lower 100s (my happy place). The problem with these diets is that they are almost impossible for the average person to stick to. I am interested in a low carb diet for prophylactic reasons, but find that I have to do so much work around my nutrition that I end up just buying stuff off the supermarket shelf. No doubt if I had a disease that low carb would help with I would spend more time and do it but for the health of the nation this is kind of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. More food businesses should be marketing low carb versions of regular foods and develop low carb alternatives to bread etc.

I'll be 60 next month and I started removing hair off my upper lip first around 20 and then it just ended up being more and more areas and PCOS and no babies etc. I wasn't overweight either but the drs would tell me to lose weight. Made me angry 😠 by the time I was 30 I was overweight and just got heavier until 2018 when I started keto at the end of that year. I've lost 160ish pounds, I was 306 and now 144. Went through menopause and then Had a hysterectomy in 2017 and my gyn surgeon said I no longer had pcos and the hair would stop growing. NOT! It did slow down on my chest, back and other areas but not my face. People can't tell but that's not the issue. I can feel it and I hate it!
      Supposedly they have a medication that helps but it never helped me I don't know if it would now but I plan to ask my dr about it. Also there is a cream that's supposed to thin out the hair and make it softer. I hope you find an answer too. I know a lot of women have this problem.

      I had hysterectomy when I was 29. Never had any children. I had such severe endometriosis, and fibroid's. Had many surgeries, but nothing helped. It got to the point where I was in pain every day, not just monthly...when the pain was so bad, that I would throw up. I wish I knew all of this way back then. I am 53 now.

    I was checked out a few videos regarding this topic and the word "Androgens" were mentioned and their connection with insulin. Is that accurate?
