How is even possible that after 100 times of me listening to this I still profoundly love how Martha plays it. If only was possible I would transfer years of my life to Martha to preserve her in our world.
To think just how many pianists have been born and have played this concerto and to think that there will never be a single person who plays it as perfectly as Martha. Extraordinary in the highest way
Martha OWNS this concerto. Pappano and his young virtuosi are stellar accompanists. Even Martha looks on them with affection in their beautifully-played interludes. A performance to treasure and simply unsurpassed.
Martha is rightly pleased & happy at her very best, with the young orchestra, doing their accompaniment with their youth and vitality.Such a spectacular show for everyone of us.
Martha's fingers has probably touched more hearts than all the heart surgeon in the world combined. Even the great composers would have been so proud that Martha played their pieces.
Martha`s talent is imponderable , many superlatives could possibly be used to describe it but in each case none of them would be sufficient and that talent is a match to her character and personality. She is one of the very best ... and they are not many. She has played in her mind each passage at the speed of light long before her fingers contact each key. Bravissima ...assolutamente !
Imaging playing this piece, finger agility, at the age of 70. I bet when I'm 70 I can barely walk without pain or sit up straight. Martha is a gift from God.
Her talent not only reaches into our souls but every time she touches the keyboard she makes the music and the piano talk to us in a way that possibly no other pianist can. Martha is the greatest of the greats. I hope that her contribution to classical music lives on for eternity.

This was the first concerto I ever heard in my life. I was close to or around 5 years old at the time. I played it over and over and over again for years. At 63, I’ve loved it all my life. Martha brings my initial wonderment and captivation back again. Listening her rendition of it, she brings it all back to me. God bless her and to all those very young and talented musicians in the orchestra. I’m sure they’ve never forgotten that performance with her either. ❤️
Argerich's octaves are still the best in the business: fluent, spot-on accurate, and perfectly voiced. Rachmaninov suffered no fools at the piano (he knew he was the best) but I think he would have LOVED Argerich!
@@padraicfanning7055 Rachmaninoff also idolized Josef Hofmann and Art Tatum, but I cannot imagine that Rachmaninoff would not have been impressed with Argerich. That was my point.

When you see someone's fingers go blurry because of the speed in which they are playing, it's like putting shame to the end of a fireworks show. Martha Argerich is not only an awesome player and consummate professional, she is having FUN! Bravo!
Check out Yuja Wang playing this piece , her hand speed is faster than Martha's , while not as seasoned as Martha , Wang substituted in Martha's place just one time and became a sensation that catapulted her to instant fame. Yuja Wang is now considered one of the top concert pianists in the World.

A different interpretation -- maybe controversial, even -- but one the students of this Special Orchestra likely will never forget. Delicate, subtly dissonant (particularly in the second movement, to my listening), and grand, so that all the music, not just the typically memorable parts, stood out.
I listened to the short interview at the end of this performance and it made me wonder if she actually practiced with the orchestra before the concert. Nevertheless, it is literally a very strong performance, she played very hard on the keys, got a very strong and open sound from the piano and I think that she had to because, in some parts of the concert, the players (hello brass players) were very loud. The result of that unintended imbalance was however delightful. In contrast, a slower and melodic performance of that concerto is the one with Barenboim and the Divan orchestra that is also available on youtube. this one is superior in many aspects, for example, the performance of the principal flute player, (Alba Luna Sanz Juanes) is exquisite and probably the best I have ever heard.
It's a stunning performance, unparalleled in energy, precision and depth. This looks like a student orchestra - they play to the hilt, as if they know they are accompanying one of the greatest pianists, putting on the greatest performance. This performance (2001) is right after Argerich returned to performing after a serious and protracted battle with cancer. I'd say this performance was when she was at the peak of her career and power but with Argerich there has never been a peak - since taking the Chopin competition title in 1965, she has constantly been a pianist extraordinaire. One can find numerous reference recordings she has done in every decade, and she continued to turn out triumphs in her 70s, including this performance of Chopin's 3rd Sonata at the age of 79!!!! (ruclips.net/video/2wPOUbjb8nw/видео.html) and this performance of the Rachmaninoff Piano Suites at the age of 80!!! (ruclips.net/video/ZVATGYcaf14/видео.html) Could you imagine if the world had lost Argerich to cancer 20 years ago - before this performance occurred?!?! So much music the world would have missed out on. Thank G-d that didn't happen.

What a great orchestra. They had no problem keeping up with her, which isn't always the case when she plays this. Sometimes she just leaves them in the dust.
The power and precision of Martha Argerich's performance here is quite extraordinary. The Orchestra is wonderful here to. I'd love to hear Martha's Greig Piano Concerto. There is an early 1960's recording, however the sound quality is very poor.
