  • Resetting the timing chain. Sorry for poor audio in some sections. Most notably, the section for matching the timing link on the chain to the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket is nearly inaudible. Just note that the crankshaft is turned counterclockwise, as needed, so the colored link lines up with a pinhhole mark on the sprocket. This is a popular V6 engine used in Toyota Camry, Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, RAV4, Lexus RX350 featuring dual Variable Valve Timing on intake and exhaust cams.

    I was just looking around on youtube for information about 3.5L engines, before buying my next Toyota highlander. I understand the right and left looking out from inside of the car. This is the first time I got to see the timing chain and understanding more about this engine. Thank you Frank for spending the time to show us, I really enjoyed your video.

    The nomenclature for the engine banks is related to looking at a rear wheel drive looking from the drivers seat, its a very common definition in Automotive...... So in summary the idea is to treat the dual overhead camshafts as if they are single overhead camshafts because the secondary cams are linked initially to the primary camshafts (Ones with the VVT assemblies installed)

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it's possible, but it would not be easy or fun to do. There is a lot or disassembly required to remove the timing cover, with the work being done in a very tight space. There's also difficulty in supporting the engine properly with the oil pans removed (to allow removal of the timing cover).

    Thank you for this video, it's extremely useful especially when I couldn't wrap my head around the manual lol. I want to ask, is there any way of checking the condition of the timing chain? I already have the engine out of the car (it needed a transmission replacement) and I thought I might as well reseal the timing cover whilst it's out of the car but Ive been thinking about whether or not it's worth replacing the chain and tensioners as well. The car has about 236,000kms but I wasn't the previous owner so I don't know of any issues with it. Thank you!

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  5 лет назад

      I believe that the repair manual does have a measurement procedure for the chain to check for excessive wear. With this kind of mileage and depending on your intended use this would not be a bad time for a re-fresh. The chain itself is cheap but if you did decide to replace it you would also want to replace the VVT gear/sprockets and the tensioners which adds to the cost. The best time to do it is with the engine out of car as these are a real pain to work on in-car.

      @@Merryfrankster_ I was thinking that too, especially reading up that these engines are known for VVTi failures. Do you know what part is supposed to be used? Many people seem to say part 13050-0P071 but others say 0P080 and some others too. Also what's your opinion on aftermarket intake gears? Or should I stick with OEM? Sorry about all the questions lol

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  5 лет назад +1

      Just say no to aftermarket gears. I use nothing but Denso, Aisin, and Toyota on my engines. Honestly I couldn't tell you what part number to use probably the most recent one in the part supercession chain. When I need advisement on an issue like this I call up Conicelli Toyota which also operates Partznet their parts desk is EXTREMELY qualified and helpful and that's where I buy most of my OEM Toyota Scion and Lexus parts.

    For six months, I have a car problem, and no master can find me a problem.
    He does not report any mistakes, but he has a problem.
    It's about when I drive it a little faster, after 30-40 kilometers, the car starts to lose power at the moment when I add it to the gas. This power loss is felt in the first 2-3 seconds, or until it reaches 150 kw, then it has total power. At that moment, it started to empty my hybrid battery and pulled it to the last dash, and it is very hard to charge. I have to stop, to turn off the car to cool down a little and then everything works normally, until I come back again. 30-40 kilometers.
    The battery is new, I changed the pump in the changer, lots of things that I thought I should replace, and again I have the same problem.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  4 года назад

      It is mostly the same. The engine harness is different so you must use the one from your Camry. If the Highlander had the oil cooler option you will have to remove that and install the upper oil pan and cooling tubes from the Camry. The plastic intake plenum may be different in shape so you should swap the plenum from the Camry. The motor mount bracket on the timing cover side may be different so you would need to swap it. The alternator may be different. The long block meaning the valve covers, the heads, and the block, are the same.

    i have the same engine, have 83,000 miles, at what point is the vvt supposed to be changed or how will i know its time or are there any warnings..?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  7 лет назад +1

      This is good question. Normally the VVT gears should not need to be replaced for the life of the engine. HOWEVER.... there is a recall or TSB for some 2GR-FE engines that calls for replacement of the VVT gears. Here is the relevant link:
      www.myvenza.ru/tsb/2GR-FE_ENGINE_TICKING_NOISE_AND_OR_MIL_ON_P0014_PO015_PO024_PO025_PO017_OR_PO018_T-SB-0094-09.pdf
      As noted in the TSB, symptoms to watch out for are ticking noise on startup and illuminated CEL with codes related to the VVT. If you have these symptoms you should replace the gears.
      It is also possible to test the function of the VVT gears. The repair manual for 2GR-FE lists a test procedure that is performed with the gears out of the engine.
      Also you should be aware that the original rubber VVT oil line, with a rubber section, should be replaced with an all metal line. This is the TSB:
      media.fixed-ops.com/toy_campaigns/90k_dlrltr.pdf
      There is also a TSB affecting the VVT Oil Control Valves (OCVs):
      alflash.com.ua/avtovideo/sienna/T-SB-0105-11.pdf
      If you haven't done so already you should definitely do the metal oil line replacement. For anything else, just proceed as needed.

      In order to remove the timing cover you must first remove the valve covers and the upper oil pan otherwise the timing cover cannot be removed.

    I swear that this is one of the best videos on youtube ever made and just seeing it again for the first time in several months I am impressed that anyone could pull off such a fantastic video. Watch it and weep motherfuckers.

    Left and Right are as seen from driver seat point of view not you standing in front of engine.

      Made total sense to me as well. When you look to the front of the vehicle, front is ahead, rear is behind. Left is left, right is right...duh.

      This is exactly the same as Lexus RX350/Highlander and exactly same as Lexus ES350/Camry.

      Could be for head gasket, could be for replace camshafts, or could be for no reason too.
