Andy & Alex Good call on this classic song. One thing about Styx is when u get their albums you know what you’re gonna get. Very distinct vocals and funky grooves with distinct guitar 🎸 work.
Now....When you play PAINKILLER by Judas Priest, turn your headphones up to get the full effect of those machine gun drums at the beginning
You dudes are doing good. Keep it up.
      ✌🏻 out clowns!

The New Floyd The first episode of Freaks and Geeks plays “Come Sail Away” at the end during a school dance scene. It’s a perfect moment for those of us who were in high school in the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Styx rose up when hard rock started to become glossy and mainstream. It was a trend of the late 70s, and it was the undoing of many bands, much like today. Still Styx had a talent for ballads, humor, hooks and commercial hard rock. They were hugely popular for a few years, dominating rock/pop radio in the US just before and after around 1980 along with bands like REO Speedwagon and Supertramp.

A&A, Styx is a gold mine of great music, with some serious cheese mixed in, That being said, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, Snowblind, Suite Madame Blue, Fooling Yourself (hell, the entire Grand Illusion album for that matter) but most of all, for me, is The Grand Illusion. I was thirteen when it was released and very, very few songs have ever spoken to me like Grand Illusion did. The music is spectacular but the lyrics, wow. For a lost, confused teen, I felt like someone finally heard me.

"Renegade" and 'Too Much Time on My Hands" are sung by Styx's Tommy Shaw ... as is "Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)." Styx also had many hits - that sound way different than Tommy Shaw's songs - with his bandmate Dennis DeYoung, who sang lead on "Lady," "Come Sail Away," and the weirdly fun "Mr. Roboto."

Glad to see you guys getting your STYX FYX! The musical diversity of STYX is one of their greatest attributes and the Renegade/Too Much Time on My Hands is a prime example of that. I would recommend "Come Sail Away". Warning NOT, I repeat, NOT to use the "Official Video" version which cuts out the middle section of the song!!! Please listen to the 6 minute version which is the TRUE version of the song. Love the channel and keep the STYX comin'.

    • @bennyh4950
      @bennyh4950 4 года назад

YES...YES...YES!!! Ridin' The Storm Out live (from the 1977 live album "You Get What You Play For") is ABSOLUTE REO Speedwagon listening and the cut that should be played for introducing someone to this band. This is a perfect example from my post above wincing on some of the recent song choices lately and how a wrong song can turn someone off immediately from a band and not give them another chance. If someone is curious about REO Then "Ridin' The Storm Out" is a perfect place to start because like many bands of the 70's and 80's they started out class A, arse kickin' rock n roll band and then went softer than your great grand dad's love unit!! REO is 2 different bands (see night ranger), arse kickin' rock from about 71 (noting the debut of gary richrath and his guitar & song writing skills) through 1980 and then came the other band that started writing love songs for 14 year old girls like "don't let him go" and over the cliff they fell. Buh-BY!! Richrath then tried a solo gig but the record wasn't backed well by the label. Gary also had his demons as many musicians do and it cost him his spot in REO and soon after his solo act tanked and he drank himself to death. Anyhow, REO was once a great rock band so WHOEVER decides what goes into A & A's headphones, the 1977 cut of Ridin' The Storm Out on the "You Get What You Play For" album is the ticket to the REAL REO. Git 'Er Done!!

  • @abf9596
    @abf9596 5 лет назад +1

Styx is SO diverse, partly due to the fact all lineups had 3 lead vocalists/songwriters with great voices. The classic lineup (1976-1983, 1995-1999) had three awesome songwriters. The Top 40 singles (they had 8 Top 10's) would be one catalog, and the album tracks would be a HUGE catalog. Collaborations of 2 or 3 of the songwriters were very cool too. The following recommendations are a mix of the above (lead singers in parentheses)
    Come Sail Away (Dennis Deyoung)
    Put Me On (James Young/DDY)
    Queen of Spades (DDY)
    Fooling Yourself (Tommy Shaw)
    Great White Hope (JY)
    Snowblind (JY/TS)
    Man In The Wilderness (TS)
    Castle Walls (DDY)
    Borrowed Time (DDY)
    Rockin' The Paradise (DDY)
    Miss America (JY)
    Half Penny/Two Penny (JY)
    Cold War (TS)
And, after you pick a couple of the above more "rock" songs, you guys NEED to react to the controversial Mr. Roboto (DDY)!

Crystal Ball. You'll love how it starts out slow and builds with their signature vocal sound and style of rock.

You cannot REALLY get into Styx without these songs:
    1) Snowblind (Paradise Theater)
    2) Suite Madam Blue (Equinox)
    3) Crystal Ball (Crystal Ball), the first album with Tommy Shaw
    4) Blue Collar Man
And, probably the song that launched them into super stardom: Come Sail Away (Grand Illusion)

I've become a big Styx fan over the past few months.. If you are interested into delving into the real rare progressive rock sound check out their first 4 albums from Wooden Nickel.. My favorite albums from the early days are Styx II and Man of Miracles!. A must listen to especially DeYoungs stuff especially Suzanne, Father OSA and Man of Miracles.

Man of Miracles is EPIC. I don't think anyone has done a reaction video to that one, would love to see it here by A&A.

I think you're wrong about the fun. This is from the Paradise Theater album (1980) and it marked the beginning of a rift between Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw (one of my favorite guitarists). DeYoung was more experimental and kept adding theatrical elements into the music. The other members, most notably Shaw, didn't like it. It eventually led to them ousting DeYoung. They had some great hits in the 70s and 80s. I'd recommend "Come Sail Away" and "Fooling Yourself" off the top of my head. You should also give Damn Yankees a listen. It's a band comprised of Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, Jack Blades, and Michael Cartellone.

The riff between band members started after *Cornerstone* was released. Dennis was actually first fired in 1980. But the guys couldn't find a replacement for him at the time, so they asked Dennis to come back.
Even during their Wooden Nickel period though, and *Equinox,* they had problems with DeYoung. He was one of the main reasons John Curulewski left the band in 1975...

Love you both, and you're great taste in music....This is Tommy Shaw's song, lead singing...I just saw and got to meet Styx a few months ago and not only do they sound incredible, you would never know Tommy is 65/66, his energy, voice and looks are years younger, another plus, the entire band is humble and plays for the love of music and is so giving to their fans....if ever in your area, a truly great concert to see.....Have an incredible weekend, and Rock On!!

I just stumbled on this on the Saturday afternoon of a 3-day weekend ... so, when riffing on the song title you said "we've got too much time on our hands, and so do you, that's why you're watching us" I lol'ed. And TBH I haven't listened to this song since it was actually on the radio - they were never one of my favorite bands. But now thanks to you I remember why I did always kinda like them when they came on. And now that you mention Renegade I'm going to have to go check out that video, since I remember liking that one even more.
Thanks for helping me "fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way" ;-)

Styx had three singer/songwriters during their heyday.
You've listened to two songs sung by Tommy Shaw. This may be a different tact for the two of you, I suggest you listen to three songs in a row, one from each singer.
Suite Madame Blue (Dennis DeYoung circa 1976, Miss America (James Young - 1977) and Blue Collar Man (Tommy Shaw - 1979). Three unique songs by each guy in the band. You won't regret it. :)
Oh, and a constant supporting them were twin bothers Chuck and John Panazzo on base and drums/percussion.

I love this whole album (Paradise Theater). I love this song in how the keyboard sets the beat and then the drums come in on the off-beat. One of my favorite Styx songs. Next song you gotta hear, "Come Sail Away". It's Styx' most iconic song.

Can't believe you have not heard "Come sail away" DO IT! I can't stand most of the eighties either. The 60's was a lot of sanitized pop in the beginning which begun to become experimental with the Beatles. That experimentation along with better instruments and recording led to what I feel is the best rock era from about 67- 79. So much variety, so much experimentation, a wider variety of instrumentation and use of sound, and better craftsmanship of instruments. I sorely miss that era, and it is a joy for me as a 61 year old to see you men such as yourselves appreciating the music.

@JD Chase Most politicians in Washington are how you describe Donald Trump. I support Trump not for his personality, but for his draining the swamp. What is draining the swamp? The politicians in DC come to DC with modest wealth and steal the over taxed people of this country's money. They set their children up in unethical if not illegal situations to make them rich such as Hunter Biden. They continually raise taxes thus destroying job opportunities for the middle class. They have run up the national debt to the point our economy is in danger of collapse. The political system in DC is corrupt and evil. Donald Trump is trying to reverse and restore the system of this country that once made us the richest nation on earth, not the most indebted nation on earth. I suggest you read more widely for a better understanding of the issues than the current left wing talking points being used to brainwash the masses.

Just watched your Boston - More Than a Feeling video. Been aware of your content for about 3 weeks now and see you're doing great. Some treasures are for discerning listeners and you definitely qualify soooo. Challenge: Of the following which do you like more? Edgar Winter - Frankenstien or Boston - The Launch. They are both nonvocal instrumental so the music is the message. Give those two a listen and I'd love to watch your reaction and hear your thoughts. Requirement. Serious volume on both.

I bought "They only come out at night" , when I was 12 or 13, specifically for Frankenstein. It was the first album I bought, and it took me awhile to save enough allowance to buy it, but well worth it. Free Ride was a bonus. I'm now 56, and it remains one of my all-time favorites. I love rock instrumentals, like Hocus Pocus by Focus(a little yodeling, but no lyrics, YYZ by Rush, and Outta Space by Billy Preston(more funk than rock), but it STILL rocks.
