    I expected masking tape to be on the list! It's one of my essentials for painting. I also recycle brown packaging paper to lay out and paint on to make less of a mess. Hairspray is also an essential for pencil work. Exacto knives are also essential for a lot of detailing with paper that you don't want to have to fold to cut where a hole puncher won't reach. I feel like sponges are also kind of essentials since they're honestly so multi purpose. If I were to sit and really think, I'd probably be able to come up with at least 10 more tools that make life making art easier 😂

      Roxanne - Hairspray? If you're using it as a fixative, that's going to destroy your work in the long run. I recommend getting some Krylon workable fixative instead.

    I might need a dusting brush. I use a dry paint brush or makeup brush but the dusting brush covers more surface area!
    I buy cheap packs of washcloths from Target, (there's a cheap brand that has something like 6-8 washcloths in it for around 2 bucks) to use as my working cloths for cleaning brushes while painting, lifting paint on watercolors, cleaning up the surface when I'm done, etc. Better than wasting paper towels. When they get too dirty, into the washer they go.

    I use a hairdryer when I carve for linocuts. The heat softens the linoleum a little making it easier to carve ( less chance of slipping and slicing my fingers) My mentor originally told me to use an iron& fabric put I was too scared, so I used a hairdryer instead and have ever since no matter the size of the print

  • @rioreason

    I USE BINDER CLIPS FOR EVERYTHING. What most people don’t realize about the basic black and silver ones that makes them 10x more useful: those little silver wire handles are removable!
    Say you want to hang something up, but tape or sticky-tack isn’t ideal (though I do love sticky-tack too). Just remove a handle, slip it in there, and put the handle back on to the binder clip. Voila, super portable and attachable item! It’s really versatile, and I actually use this a lot with my mesh backpack, almost in a reversed way. I attach one side of the clips to the inside of my bag, and then I use the clips to hold wires and other small items up high away from the bigger shit in the bottom of my bag. Not portable, but definitely helpful for organization.

      Yes, I like the pencil extender but it looks like you need to push too much into the holder (or am I wrong, is it spring-loaded and can hold very short e.g. 1cm?) so you can't really use them much more than I do anyway.

    • @reneedixonart
      @reneedixonart 5 лет назад +1

      @@jennyhughes4474 It's not spring loaded. You're right , it needs a good amount of the pencil to hold onto, despite that I really like mine because it makes holding shorter pencils more comfortable.

    i have a couple of pipettes but i also have a ton of 10mm syringes still in their sterile packaging (long story) but my docs don't want them back so i just use those for watercolor. i feel like i get better control of the water from a syringe than a pipette, especially with the smaller tip that the syringes have.

    i love stuff like this!!! the REAL art hacks lbr. for plastic wrap options, here are my suggestions: if you dont have an airtight palette and wanna keep paint wet (im thinking of acrylic and gouache here), you can use a regular plate as a palette and then put another plate upside down on top of it. something i do that isnt necessarily time-saving, just thrifty, is save glass jars from food items and use them for storage, to hold pens and paint brushes, paint water, painting mediums etc. a for real time-saver though is having a lot of paint brushes for oils and acrylics - i can keep several going while im painting and then still have more next time even if i dont have time to wash the last ones i used.

    Now Alice, did you only do nine things because you wanted us to give you the final item for top 10? I was really hoping to catch you out on at least one thing and say oh this is so unnecessary but each time you revealed your choice I had to agree. My tenth is a kneaded eraser, more than 1! I would also say you can use a porcelain plate as a watercolor palette. In fact if you look in your kitchen in your cookie sheet storage? Or plate storage maybe you’ll find your other butchers tray, perhaps from someone who helped you move and thought it belonged there. That is where my extra pallets disappeared to when my sister-in-law helped my wife clean up one Sunday afternoon! Good luck and thanks for the lovely video.

    I love sketching in color and hate graphite except as a mixed media medium, so I use Prismacolor Col-Erase pencils. Erasable color pencils are 👌🏻👌🏻. I also use a kneaded eraser to avoid pencil eraser dust, unless I’m working on a detailed piece, then I use a Pentel clicky eraser stick thing to erase detailed mistakes.
    I definitely need a pencil extender!

    6:00 so should I be keeping my copic markers in the fridge? It makes sense since you don't want them to be exposed to sunlight, but why don't I see other artists do it? This video changed everything for me 🤯

    • @HulloAlice
      @HulloAlice  3 года назад

      I don't think you need to keep the copics in the fridge, that might not be great for them tho it's good for paint, they should be okay so long as they're capped. But it definitely wouldn't hurt to keep them in a darker and cooler cupboard! For artwork, keep it out of direct sunlight. If it's framed get UV protectant glass! If you don't hang it up, just keep it in a portfolio so it's not exposed to light. I have the pro-folios and they're really nice :) I hope that helps!!

    You mentioned that you live in a super dry place, as do I, so I'm hoping you might have a solution to my dilemma: I use a Sta-Wet palette to keep my paints wet, which works great, but it's so incredibly dry where I live that the water on my brush dries in the time it takes me to dip my brush, then dip into the paint, then put brush to paper - literally in seconds. I think they mean instead of a regular one that you get dust from when you use. The kneadable erasers are great, but they don't work to remove masking fluid and I can't use them for all of my erasing needs. I use them when I don't want to remove an entire sketch and just want to put line art on top. Even then, I tend to use a regular eraser to get rid of everything afterward.
