I'm sorry it took me a while to gather the time to watch this, but thanks again for the little shoutout! It's been so fun seeing you use all those greens. It was also really intriguing seeing your favs go head to head. I never got around to doing my Top 5 papers in my series because I just feel like there are so many options that I haven't used... and I keep making excuses haha. This will certainly get me to try the Heritage again! The paints really do look so vibrant on it.
Great Review! If you want to do a part 2, then I have Fabriano Artistico, Moulin du Roy, Lana Aquarelle, Winsor & Newton and Saunders Waterford that you can try out 😁. Arches does now have a ‘Bright White’ option for their paper, the downside of bright white papers is that they are not quite as archival.
Where to buy relative cheap 100% cotton paper? Have you ever heard of Paul Rubens cotton paper. Here is their retail shop and their quality is also excllent: paulrubens.aliexpress.com/store/5140092
@@rubenspaul5271 I like your paper, but I find the Strathmore 500 sheets to be a little more affordable and better quality. Love your watercolours to death and back though, never had any issues with any techniques. Once my set runs out I will definitely be refilling it using the tube versions of the set.
OMG I FINALLY know why my arches paper stink like shit !! I thought it was getting old! And thank you for the warning I have a cat, I'll keep an eye out 😂
Extremely good review. You are all talk and action with equal amount of visual. Unlike others who are all talks and yet you get very little or nothing at all. It's easier to understand when one can actually see what happens in the paper. Kudos to a well thought of content.
It's really helpful to know that there are different types of watercolor paper depending on your "style". I'm sure it also has to do with I should probably take a few classes on watercolor paints but it's good to choose paper on how much you lift or like to work with paper.
Ooo yes these papers are nice . can we see a battle of the watercolor brushes or other supplies tested from like AliExpress to drugstore to craft store to online . Cheapest to expensive type of videos idk
I so appreciate this video even though I do hot press since I do allot of botanicals and I started with hot press paper I love it. It is nice to see the quality of this paper
I'm so glad you made this video. I've never used "rough" textured watercolor paper so this was very informative for me. I would have liked to see them all lined up with the brand names on each piece so I could compare them, but otherwise a very thorough review of the papers. Thank you!
I just finished my first watercolor "sketch book" and was looking for other options because the book I had is only sold in one (small) size. I use it for everything - drawing/ink/water color - I fell in love the texture of cold press. SO SO SO glad I found your video as I was having A LOT of trouble trying to navigate all the options out there. Ordering my Bee Creative book now!
I’m not 100%, but I think Bee paper is only externally sized. I cannot use masking fluid on it without it bleeding like crazy and becoming almost useless. I think with multiple payers the external sizing is being removed, hence fuzzy lines and mushy edges. This is just my theory, though.
I use Bee Paper and Arches the most since this is what's available in my area, and I think while the Bee paper is better than the non 100% cotton papers, it does not perform as well at all as arches. Maybe this is why, but makes sense since it is so affordable
At the start of the video I was like ooo I like the bottom middle one the most! And it ended up being the one that's your favourite! Really tempted to try this paper now 👀
I might try out Bee someday as right now, I just use Canson. After hearing Emily Arful and now you talking about it, I think it would be smart to give a go eventually.
"I can't hand in my art homework, 'cause the dog ate it" Nice to see the ol' excuses are still in circulation! 😎 Trying to get back into art after a 10-year break. I am a big 'Arches' fanyboy though ... but I found this video very imitative. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this detailed helpful video on paper. As a newbie to watercolor I learned quickly to ignore any advice on practicing with cheaper paper as it almost made me quit. Arches is my favorite tho I’ve been scared to try anything other after a couple 100% cotton (including the bee paper) didn’t work out for me. But this video has convinced me that there are indeed a couple more I need to try Videos like these are so helpful and appreciated as it does take so much time and effort But the info like the bleeding of the rough Sennelier among other bits of info are things ppl like myself would otherwise know
My favourite watercolour paper is the Strathmore 500 series hot cotton paper. Its thick, it's smooth, it can hold so much water, and its $10 for 10 sheets at my local superstore.
My heart goes out to you losing an entire pad of Arches! Not cheap! More importantly your fur baby was okay! ( btw,Arches is pronounced "R chez", as in the english language, not French. You do pronounce Sennelier beautifully!)
Great review! I like using XL, since I go throug 2-3 pads ( 2 sizes) a month, and I am a professional painter, not a professional artist, so this video will be a great reference, and lmake it less stressful for when I do justify paying $20 more. 🤘 Thank you.
Great review..I have been curious about the Bee paper. Surprised by the Canson Heritage paper, which I have never even considered using. TY so much for doing this. Will now try the Canson as I love rough paper, and have only used Arches.
Loved this! Such useful information. Thank you for taking the time to do this! Definitely try just using a regular old palette knife to remove sheets from your watercolour blocks. Much less chance of damaging the paper. 😊
I'm a beginner and you're not the first artist to recommend bee paper. I got some and was so distressed at how badly it pilled and warped after just getting slightly damp. Turns out the other youtuber's didn't mention you need to get the COTTON cold pressed watercolor paper, not the normal watercolor cold pressed paper. I guess the other people assumed I'd know that cotton was what you needed to get, but as a beginner I had know idea that it was even a thing. Thank you for specifying!
I love zecchi's! I studied in florence and bought all my pastels there. They have so many options ❤ love your art! Thanks for the video I've been trying to figure out what kind of paper to graduate too
What a fantastic demonstration. Thank you. Can you talk a little about the pencil when you drew the leaves and then painted over them? I tried and still too much of the pencil was visible in the final drawing. Thank you. Keep doing what you do.
This just goes to show the importance of testing paper by actually painting on them, and not only that, but painting the same painting using the same techniques on all of them. Testing by swatching and randomly testing techniques just doesn't give as much information, and doesn't teach you which paper works best specifically for you. Most of the swatching sheets looked quite similar in your video, but boy oh boy what difference between the end results of the actual paintings. I agree the bottom left hand corner painting looks by far the best of them all (I'm assuming it's the Canson Heritage), which is interesting to me, as I haven't considered giving this specific paper a try until now (especially not the rough) as it's way more expensive than any other paper. I wonder if the CP is as good as rough. I did start to do my own paper testings a while ago, but boy oh boy is it time consuming and boy oh boy am I lazy, and boy oh boy is it exhausting to paint the same painting over and over again - so it's gonna take a while lol! Great video!
I have a block of Canson Heritage Cold Press. It seems that every sheet has certain areas (a lot) where the sizing spreads unevenly . It doen'st affect the first layer of color, but the ones that follow it. The paint is sucked and pulled to the other side of the sheet, and it also spreads outside the wet part of the paper. I had to throw away two nearly finished pieces this week :(. Even Canson Montaval gave me better results, wich is weird.
especially with a very expensive paper it is a shame if it does not work as it should. you should write canson your experience so that something changes. en.canson.com/contact-us
As a French girl it makes me happy that 3 of the 4 brands reviewed are french x) and so easily availaboe in every store here. The video was interesting even though I am more of a hot press pure white watercolor paper kind of girl (I don't like texture and granulation). But I think I am going to test the hot press version of the canson heritage next (I am currently using fabriano artistico pure white hot press and arches hot press).
As a german artist, I can sincerely tell you: When it comes to art supplies, french brands as Canson and Sennelier are always a save bet. Even Schmincke and Hahnemühle (german brands) loose to them in some aspect. Well, colored pencils are another thing though, nothing can compare to Caran D'Ache Luminance wax based pencils (swiss brand) and Faber-Castell Polychromo oil-based pencils (german brand).
Nice review. I never use cotton paper other than Arches and Arto (it's better than most celulose paper, but not as good as Arches. At least it's freaking hella cheap), but even then I almost never use my Arches paper, it's so good, it scares me. Maybe after I run out of Arches paper, I will buy Heritage (but I don't know if I like rough paper tho). Also, have you ever use Moulin du Roy paper? It's probably the second cheapest cotton paper that I know in my country. $22 per Arches paper pad to $13 per Moulin du Roy paper pad. Some artist even like it more than Arches and Heritage.
Alice I enjoyed watching this video and was surprised that you changed your top choice! I have recently changed my favorite paint brand so I know that everyone who wants to grow must be open to change! I have become a DaVinci paint FAN! and Denise’s Earth Friendly Palette is a must have! Thanks again for a wonderful video and take care of yourself! Take some time off if you need to your health is much more important than getting the next video out! Have a great day.
mjpete27 Me too! Dan Smith and Da Vinci have taken over from Schmincke (although I still love Schmincke’s delicacy and transparency for certain subjects).
Do you have a sketch of the succulent you painted in this video ? Do you actually do any painting classes anywhere ? I just found you and I would love to learn how to use the layering of colors like you did in this video . But you go pretty fast in this one so hard to follow for a teaching video . Love your information though . Thanks
I’ve recently used Canson Heritage and found it awful to use? It soaks up the pigment so much and colour bleeding was an issue. Also the buckling was ridiculous. Maybe I got a bad batch??
Your 'Senn-El-Yay' pronunciation is pretty darn good. :^) However, if you're interested in French pronunciation, the paper company name 'Arches' is pronounced in one syllable - the 'es' at the end is silent. The American English word Arches is closest to is Ash - that kind of open 'A' sound. But they sneak in a subtle French 'r' sound between the A and the sh. This 'r' is like a fleeting glottal constriction (of the opening to the throat) by the back of the tongue, nothing like an American 'r'.
Great review on the best time! Last week i Made an artwork at artclass with the Arches and really loved it. Didn’t knew the fact about pets loving this paper, and yess my cat destroyed my piece 😪 i loved the paper and Made an order to buy more -> now i know that my cat Will kill the whole block I Will return this paper 👊🏻 guess i’m going to stay with my Canson papers 👌🏻
Just came across your channel been searching to see if the watercolor paper that I own is a good one. It's Daler-Rowney Bockingford 140lb 300g/m2 pad. It's a small one 7x5 inch.. I haven't come across a review on that one as yet. I'm a beginner watercolor Artis btw.
I find the Canson Heritage to be really finicky for me. I think the sizing on it is just not consistent. I've bought two pads months apart and had this issue, but maybe my art store has been sitting on a bad batch xD I've switched back to Arches, but maybe I'll give the bee paper a try!
especially with a very expensive paper it is a shame if it does not work as it should. you should write canson your experience so that something changes. en.canson.com/contact-us
Thanks for the review and the fun way of painting "backwards" I immediately got my paper and paints out and started trying that way of painting, I really liked it! What was the name of the shopnin Florence? If I ever come there again I would love to get some handmade watercolourpaper, the italians are great with doing paper of great quality, Fabriano is my favourite.
I’m actually allergic to the sizing in the Arches paper. At the end of an hour - especially in a workshop setting where everyone is using it, I sound like I have pneumonia and need to be on oxygen. An artist who is also a physician was the instructor in a workshop I was in and told me to switch to another paper and separate from other students if I chose to use the Arches.
that sounds like a protein allergy, the gelatin used for sizing. I once read that some people in one place often had coughs for inexplicable reasons and the only thing these people had in common was that they were allergic to eggs and live nearby. This cough suddenly stopped after a few weeks. At the same time, the restoration work of the local church was completed. What initially seems like a strange coincidence was then determined, in the church the magnificent tempera paintings have been restored and dust from the tempera has landed in the environment and thus also in people's homes and tempera colors are made from eggs, oxidizing oils and pigments.
My first experience with cotton paper was sobering, mainly because I was hoping for a much better paper, because many people believed and had the experience that cotton paper is very good and cellulose paper is so difficult and bad. My expectations were maybe too high for a paper. The Artistico in CP 300g / m2 was my first cotton paper and was bought before the changeover in 2016. It was better but not that it felt e.g much better like 10 times better and it's a lot easier to paint on. I also never had the feeling that I had to fight against my cellulose paper, which is also due to my somewhat loose painting style. Maybe the other people had awful papers before and from something bad to very good there is a very big difference and from good to very good the difference is much smaller. I previously had 2 private label papers a cheaper 200g and an expensive 275g with cloudy texture, Etival by Clairfontaine, Fabriano Watercolor and Canson Montval and I like all these papers for their peculiarities. I think that very good paper with special properties is only needed with a very precise painting style and that the paper has to support the working method very precisely instead of the certain pictures failing due to the material if it is not quite as optimal. The colour, for example, dries up exactly as desired and that there can then be no deviations, so a paper 100% must meet the requirements and with 99% it is not enough. So I'm not so perfectionist and paint more loosely, so I can deal with my paper selection more loosely, I still like to paint on these papers even if i have tried other papers. I prefer to paint on cloudy paper and there are not many papers that have this structure apart from the private label paper, there is for example the Fontaine paper in cloudy from Clairfontaine 100% cotton, Fabriano Artistico in soft also cotton, Reflex Aqaurell No 10 Esparto paper from desert grass for which not as much water is used for cultivation as for cotton.
in case someone asks, I had already tested some Cotton watercolour papers, and they were very similar to each other for my loose painting style. Some dried a bit faster others took a little more time so the papers were just a little different within a texture group. Masking fluid did not work on all papers a few broke when I tried to get the masking fluid away. I could not erase on these papers as much as on others, because they also broke on the spot. So the only paper that is very different is the Millford paper, on it paint are dried differently from the edges of the appearance and the colors do not sink at all and can be completely removed. The paper probably has as much sizing inside as it could hold.
The first two seem to behave differently when the water pushes the paint away. In the last ones lines appear ad in the first ones there is a very smooth transition. I wonder why that is?
I just watched the first 4 minutes so far... But man, what do you have to do to keep the tone dark in that Sennelier paper? 😂 You end up using tons of paint to end up with a deep tone 😢😢😢
Hello really enjoying your videos and I am learning a lot...I subscribed after watching video where you shared your thoughts about Hobby Lobby I think you should always share any strongly held and considered views, how else can you inform others who are open and able to change...Love your work
A beautiful painting and thank you for the comparisons but there's only one thing. You are pronouncing "Arches" wrong It would only be pronounced "are-shay" if there was an accent é. Instead it is silent and the way to pronounce it in French language would be phonetically like "are-shhhh". Appreciate your channel and taking the time to make these videos, they are quite beautiful.
I'm no native speaker so take it with a grain of salt, but I think the -ch sound is closer to the english ch in chips or Archer....like it sounds more like tsh than just a soft sh. The way you described it it "sounds" like you said butt in German.
I remember watching an old video were you stated you were going to talk about your favorite beginning watercolor... can’t find it lol (I am commenting before I even watch this video so hopefully you don’t talk about that video in this one and I look like an idiot) I want to experiment but not invest a life savings
Everyone loves arches it seems but I didn’t know they used animals ? And I’m not vegan or anything but it just rubbed me the wrong way when I heard this so I’m glad there’s another great alternative!
It's widely known. Most WC paints have animal based materials in them. I could try and specify but that's a lot on information for the comment section, so If that bothers you and you prefer to avoid animal based products in your watercolor artwork, Denise from In liquid Color did quite an extensive research on this and has a detailed video on the subject that includes a lot of information regarding what is animal friendly and what isn't in this industry - ruclips.net/video/SbilOHZ31s0/видео.html. Hope this helps.
For some reason, I was really conscious of your breathing and almost gasping in the audio. It was kind of distracting. However, this is a really helpful video, thank you, Alice! Damn your artwork though? So full of style and beauty. Keep it up! Love you!
Well, I shan't be using Arches. I never use any products that involves the consumption of rabbits. I understand that a good portion of the world use them, but I won't ever join them. Bunnies are pets! Not food! They should be petted and loved and kept safe.
For the last hour I’ve been watching videos about watercolour paper and then I see this in the my subscriptions? YES!!!

I wonder where you order your Bee paper. I'm in Canada and haven't been able to find it at my local store, or Amazon.
thank you for the clear descriptions and clarity--
I work at a Blick and our location sells Canson Heritage blocks in store! (Though I think it's just the cold and hot press, not rough.)
Sizing is basically glue. Rabbit skin glue is “hot glue” as Elmer’s is PVA based or cold glue. Have you tried 300 lb 100% cotton?
What wine would You recommend with Arches? 🤪

Omg thankyou 😭
Love your vids! You're amazing!
i love your vid you should do more show your note books and which ones are the best
Ouch, that's an expensive dog snack!
It's very very good. My mum swears by it.
@@HulloAlice oh that's great! I wasn't sure because I hardly saw any reviews on it. Thank you so much! ♥️
I find the Canson Heritage to be really finicky for me. I think the sizing on it is just not consistent. I've bought two pads months apart and had this issue, but maybe my art store has been sitting on a bad batch xD I've switched back to Arches, but maybe I'll give the bee paper a try!
especially with a very expensive paper it is a shame if it does not work as it should. you should write canson your experience so that something changes. en.canson.com/contact-us
Hey! thank you so much for this video. Do you know what watercolor paper can i use to paint human figure ? (sorry for my english)
So does the Canson paper only have 12 sheets of paper in the pad? If so, I think I’ll go with the bee paper for now.
That's really unfortunate! Luckily there are so many other great watercolor papers out there, have you found one that works well for you now?
that sounds like a protein allergy, the gelatin used for sizing.
Thank you! Great info!!
So I'm not so perfectionist and paint more loosely, so I can deal with my paper selection more loosely,
I still like to paint on these papers even if i have tried other papers.
I prefer to paint on cloudy paper and there are not many papers that have this structure apart from the private label paper,
there is for example the Fontaine paper in cloudy from Clairfontaine 100% cotton,
Fabriano Artistico in soft also cotton,
Reflex Aqaurell No 10 Esparto paper from desert grass for which not as much water is used for cultivation as for cotton.
in case someone asks, I had already tested some Cotton watercolour papers, and they were very similar to each other for my loose painting style.
The only downside with canson heritage is the way it spreads water or color across the page compared to arches.
For me anyway
Great review and comparison, sadly I don't own any of these papers. :)
Your nail colors are really pretty
The first two seem to behave differently when the water pushes the paint away. In the last ones lines appear ad in the first ones there is a very smooth transition. I wonder why that is?
I can’t wait to get her pallet
Sennnelier is quite difficult to get in UK...and more expensive than in Spain
I just watched the first 4 minutes so far... But man, what do you have to do to keep the tone dark in that Sennelier paper? 😂 You end up using tons of paint to end up with a deep tone 😢😢😢
Hello really enjoying your videos and I am learning a lot...I subscribed after watching video where you shared your thoughts about Hobby Lobby I think you should always share any strongly held and considered views, how else can you inform others who are open and able to change...Love your work
Now the dog ate my homework is real so when I lose my homework I'll show this to the theacher (13:01) edited
A beautiful painting and thank you for the comparisons but there's only one thing. You are pronouncing "Arches" wrong
It would only be pronounced "are-shay" if there was an accent é.
The way you described it it "sounds" like you said butt in German.
very cool!
you're the greatest!
I like the Sennelier! The grain is less pronounce
Early love u you inspire me
BEE cheap???? where do you buy it? 6x9 may be cheap but the others are as much as the top brads.
I remember watching an old video were you stated you were going to talk about your favorite beginning watercolor... can’t find it lol (I am commenting before I even watch this video so hopefully you don’t talk about that video in this one and I look like an idiot) I want to experiment but not invest a life savings
Have I been pronouncing arches wrong this whole time?
I've never heard anyone caller arches the way you do. I've always heard it pronounced 'arch-ers'
That's because everyone else pronounces it correctly and she doesn't (sorry, not hating on her)
Dang I went to florence 2 years ago. 🤔
Welp... If you are using Arches paper, then the excuse "my dog ate my work" would be applicable.
For some reason, I was really conscious of your breathing and almost gasping in the audio. It was kind of distracting. However, this is a really helpful video, thank you, Alice!
Damn your artwork though? So full of style and beauty.
Keep it up! Love you!
Sorry, I have been extremely ill for the last 2 weeks. glad you liked the video!
Really? I didn't notice her breathing at all :O
Well, I shan't be using Arches. I never use any products that involves the consumption of rabbits. I understand that a good portion of the world use them, but I won't ever join them. Bunnies are pets! Not food! They should be petted and loved and kept safe.
Arsh....
Thank you lol.
Arches is pronounced "Arsh" and not arsh-a
A broke like me cant relate
Look into the bee paper!! It's by far the most affordable
@@HulloAlice thank you💙
It's pronounced "Arsh" not "Are shay" lol.
In your future videos, speak a tad slower...
Timestamps ffs!
Thanks for not making your video 90% about your face.
this is the strangest pronunciation of arches I have ever heard lol. I think it's Arsh instead of Arshay.
Yeah ngl I'm really bad at pronunciation because I'm one of those girls who learned everything reading 😂😂
Anehthing
