  • A Patton 18" High Velocity Air Circulator fan model U2-1887. This particular unit was made in 1999 and utilizes a very poor quality blade which has horrible balance and is prone to catastrophic failure. The earlier versions of this model utilized a proper riveted blade set with a steel hub. Despite the horrible blade, Patton still chose to use good quality McMillan Electric PSC motors.

    I have one of these with the good riveted blade, it's a beast. A simple "fix" for the cracked blade issue is to drill a small hole at the end of any cracks which will stop them from progressing further. Then just inspect regularly for any new cracks.

    I’m surprised that Patton never recalled this variant. The bladeset was the fatal design flaw; having aluminum that extends to the set-screw hub puts way too much stress on the softer metal and causes it to crack. Most have steel center spiders with riveted blades which don’t suffer from this problem. There’s still an old Amazon page on this fan, and there are many negative reviews of the blades coming apart, even exploding out of the cage while running.
    The off center blades on your fan remind me of the Air King fan balance issue. But at least the Air Kings have riveted blades.
    Nice fan otherwise though! Hope you can source a replacement bladeset, or find an older one with riveted blades.

      I find it hard to believe the blade would come out of the guard if it broke; the opening is only barely big enough! I wonder if the crack could be welded back together.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan 2 года назад

      @@Xyspade you’re right; I went over the reviews again and one mentioned that they were glad it didn’t go through the cage. I must have misread it before and thought it did escape the cage lol.
      I don’t think welding would help much. It might stress the metal even more and cause it to just crack around the weld.

      Perhaps there weren't enough documented complaints, I'm sure most people would just throw the fan out if it broke.
      Good point about the Air Queens, they're just about as far off as this one is, but at least those blades are sturdy.
      I've seen people weld the blades back together when they detach from the part with the set screw but are otherwise still in tact. It's doable but not really worth while as you easily end up with balance issues. I don't think a blade failing like this can be fixed at all, the metal is just deteriorating.

    Severely out of balance eh? Sounds like that may have been what caused the blade to crack from the hub outwards

    How do you adjust the angle of the fan? By loosening the nuts on both ends, adjusting the angle of the fan/cage, and tightening the nuts on both ends of the fan?

    Yeah I do remember this one , I think this is one a the cheaply made models , if you could find a replacement blade for it , the fan would be in good shape.. I do however have a blade that would fit the shaft as well as the fan but trouble is I wouldn't afford to ship, not now anyway .. I wish I could help you with this bro . And yes these fans particularly the good ones are getting harder to find now and it does stink . By the way there is one thing I can help you with .. I found a GE motor for one of your GE box fans on Ebay .. The one with the bad bearing . I hope you can fix the problem Jordan.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  2 года назад

      I'll keep looking for a blade, one will have to turn up eventually. I was thinking about trying to retrofit a McMillan motor into that box fan; trying to find a replacement GE motor just isn't sustainable anymore.

    I had one of these with the cheap blade set… Great fan. Extremely powerful. Sadly the blade set started making a rattling noise and eventually cracked and broke loose such that the blades would slip. Blade was extremely out of balance too with one being shorter than the others. Recently bought a replacement TPI cf-18. Good fan that’s balanced but way less powerful…

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  2 года назад

      The TPI F-18-TE is probably far more comparable to the performance of these.

    There's a newer industrial fan I think that has will not industrial but high velocity they have them at Walmart I think they're 18 in about that same size those fans you you see them in the trash once in a while you see those I recommend taking the blade off of that and using that as a replacement get some spray paint bring the play with you like Walmart and match the paint to it boom you should have a fully functional fan again and it that blade I'm talking about it's a lot more lights it's probably a little cheaper but it's blade that I think would last enough for you to like enjoy the fan you know like use it it's pretty sad to see most of these beautiful good quality Pat and fans fading out because people are too lazy to service them my grandpa had two of them have one of them I got one it was running rough like and I threw some oil in it if I'm just fine and then I don't know what happened the motor started acting weird it kept running half speed I brought it back to my grandpa's house and he came and plugged it in hanging with the do something is only left after bringing it over there he came back and the fan was on fire it wasn't like burning or smoking it was on fire and I'm kind of worried about leaving because he gave me another one that's a little older and a bearings are a lot more shady replacement and I don't know what I'm going to do for this one it's still runs great spend down time it's just the bearing is so like you can definitely hear it during the spin down and the shack has a lot of play but we'll use it from time to time like run it on the lowest speed and it runs just fine it'll handle it but I'm definitely wanting to get a replacement bearing because I want to keep this fan preserved because I've been after it since I was 5 years old I'm 15 years old now it's been a decade I've been after this fan and I finally got it I'm not going to let it die on me I'm like the other one did a little bit of the Chrome at the bottom just harness but other than that it's a great good it's a great fan runs like any other patent fan the bearings are shot like the shaft has played but like when it's on the high and medium and low you don't really notice it's really when it's just spinning down you can tell the bearings are screwed up in some way no but my suggestion is they have 18 inch industrial or high velocity fans at Walmart look for those fans it was probably see him in the trash because those things burn up really easily but the blade how's the same shape so that's why I recommending it cuz that blade has like the same shape or you could just make a patent RUclips 18 little joke there I kind of wish they made a model of the u220 with the blue blade I think that'd be kind of cool see one of these fans of the blue blade but I guess they never had that option but they had two different shape blue blades but other Matt Patton actually has like great fans they just once in a while to spit out of crap Ball but I don't know that's a good fan company and I wish that they I think they are and still in company
