    I lived in Jewell from the ages of 4-10. It was a very cut off place. But they had the best school I have ever seen. We did so many cool activities and were part of some PBS docs. Grew up foraging moss, mushrooms, and berries. My dad taught me how to fire a gun, safe gun practice/ how to hunt(so we used to shoot for long periods of time too, like I assume the person in the video was). We trapped rabbits, fished trout in the river, and caught crawdads with homemade bucket traps. We basically lived off the land. We had a beautiful garden. I remember going by the abandoned houses every day riding the school bus. There was also an albino Elk that I loved seeing everyday at the refuge. We would go on day drips to Astoria and explore Fort Stevens inside and out. Running up the stairs in the Astor Column was always a fun/ scary thing to do. There was a haunted movie theatre in that we went to a few times. Fort Clatsop was also a fun place to hang out as a kid. Peter Iredale wreck. Definitely a beautiful place to grow up. I definitely spent more time outside than in.

    I'm 56 now,but lived in Jewell when I was 6-8 yrs old .
    I'm pretty sure you were in my old house (the last one you were in with the dryer ) the wheelchair was my uncle's Chris Barnett,he had gotten one of the very first one they made for wheelchair basketball
    Anyway I don't think anyone has lived in it since us my mom took me and my brother and left my dad behind they had issues so we moved to my grandmother's on hwy26 right by the junction to go Tillamook Oregon.she had 27 acres that was a functional cattle ranch my dad was in the Jewell chapter of the Gypsy Jokers MC.
    And he own a gas station on hwy26 right by the truck stop did you guys go down 26 at all? Right near the Tillamook junction there was a restaurant named flo's you might wanna check out that place too last time I was on 26 and drove by it was abandoned
    One memory of that house was in the woods around it there were the biggest freezing spiders ever.
    Didn't know about the school mom drove me my grandmas and I rode the bus from there to Cannon beach elementary school where recess was actually on the beach ,so long ago memory not so great so much has happened in my life since hard to remember when I was that young ,dad lives in coos Bay now ,wonder how he's doing.
    Sorry about rambling ,happens when we get old.

    Maybe you could do a story on "Bradwood" a ghost town on the Columbia river just down stream from Wauna, Ore. At one time there was a small town and a very large sawmill which I saw burn to the ground in the late 1960's. There was a logging railroad that went up into te woods too on Nicolie mountain. The owner at the time was Blanche Bradley, a very dear friend of our family. Her house is preserved in Cathlamet, Wash, where I grew up with my brother. They are holding "Bald Eagle Days" in Cathlamet this weekend.

    Those bread makers… my Grandpa LOVED making his homemade bread in the bread machine. He took a lot of pride. Probably because it’s the only “cooking” he did, besides making popcorn. I always thought the bread didn’t taste as good when it came from those machines. Also, they would have the weird hole in the bottom.

    I have been researching Jewell, trying to figure out what happened to it. I know that the post office closed in 1967 but where was it? What happened to the town? I did read a rumor of a fire but I can't find a single thing about it. As you noted, the store still had things inside of it, it's like they all left in a hurry. Do yo happen to know what happened to the town? Did you drive by their school on highway 103?

    • @DecayWithUs
      @DecayWithUs  2 года назад +2

      We did drive by the school, it is newer and seems to be the only thing around there. We know it was a logging town, we're not entirely sure if a big mill or something of the sort closed down. That's usually the end of tiny towns. Could have just been a chain of events as the world became more mechanized. Please come back and tell us if you find out anymore information, we really liked visiting that cute old town! (Except the gunshots) 😆
