- My family get together to cook some delicious kai (food) that many Māori enjoy eating here in Aotearoa NZ
We cook titi aka short tailed shearwater, mutton bird or muttonbird with some tasty foraged from the wild PUHA. Also on the menu is fry bread, very sweet flavoured watercress from the pot.. AND some much revered puha toroi which is puha mixed with mussels.
I do a few taste tests just for you in this exciting and tasty episode.
Delicious Māori Boil up is a favourite in our house

You always make me hungry Mike. I'm Aboriginal and my grandmother told me stories of them as kids mutton birding on our shoreline over here in Australia. She use to luv them she told me. I never had the chance to try them. They look delicious. Great family vid mate.
I read on google that the muttonbird or short tailed shearwater is also in Australia.
He aroha te mahi mo te kaupapa. Thank you for sharing this important day Mike🫶🏾
seeing that puha and muttonbird made me so hungry and homesick for the simple things i left behind
Usually just put my birds straight into the pot but now ill try the roast then boil as you guys did. Looks beauty 👌
Awesome! I’m lucky in that respect. I can get mutton bird for free. Watched this vid around 6am this morning. Told my aboriginal mate today who goes get them on the northwest of tassie when I was growing up we got them salted in buckets and cooked it the same way you have. He already new that go figure? They just straight up bbq them. Might get a couple more. As a Maori I’ll help them celebrate naidoc week. Chur!
Docahi when I was a kid my father used to get a 5 gallon tin every year full of mutton birds they came from the mutton bird islands ,and as there was no refrigeration on the islands they salted them ,so mum had to boil them in 3 lots of fresh water to get rid of the salt. Loved the meat wasn’t keen on the fat .I now live on Phillip island Australia and there is a big colony here but they are protected ,but you can buy them from king island in season yummy
The slow mo of the mutton bird was too good everything looked great 🎉
The only person who mentioned the slow mo sequence, thank you 👏
Ive never tried puha and mutton bird but watercres yes. Im samoan and i love my porkbones with cabbage or watercres but that looks really good
What a wonderful family feed for a cherished auntie. Would be 45 yrs since I have a mutton bird . Cooked that way too. Yummo. 😊
Pehana koutou katoa. How are you, all. Being Maori myself all your culinary delights are what my
family experienced. Sourcing kai prepping cooking eating with tender loving care 💕
Thank you, I might go out and get some puha for kai tomorrow now😀
I love a family gathering and feed, it doesen't get any better Mike😊
Editing like a pro these days. So well filmed, love the music, fits in well. A pleasure to watch, thanks mike
It took ages to edit this one, quite tiring
Taste test king does it again 👑 .. That was one good looking boil up bro 👌.
Was a good opportunity to film such tasty kai bro and glad I did, and also a vid for the whānau to remember the day🙂
Love fry bread, don’t have it very often. Lovely to be together with family😊
The only reason why I would cut my nails and tie my hair up, love preparing kai!
If there's no more watercress or meat, it's finished. Good for soups tho
"Trying to find some watercress"😂I remember those times bro have to be quick alright haha
The man cuz, enjoying your tasty mahi vids, homesick & hungry as now haha, kia ora☝🏽
Loving all the “quality control” 😆 All the kai looks amazing! 🤤💚
I'm positive you would have enjoyed the kai Maia 😀
Omg that was the meanest feed. So much Titi and Puha, kutai fry bread and Toroi. Also love the bit of gangsta music. Cool whanau gathering. ❤
Thanks, the music helped to mask the background music playing and the noise coming from the ringawera
💙💙💙😎😎 Kia Ora Matua hands down 1 of your best kai video's I've seen so far🔥🔥that was litt as.. I was thinking dayum I wanna try that I wanna try that an that 😂😂 .... would have loved to be that manuhiri!! mean as kai .... Rest in peace to who the unveiling was for salute 💯💯... 🤙
Oh my goodness. I remember having mutton bird with my grandfather back in the day as a kid it was roasted. Everything looked sooooooo scrumptious.. thank you for sharing
Awesome Mike, one of your best kai videos,
Kia ora to your whanau, for the mahi on unveiling day..chur
I must agree on that one bro, an opportunity came up so I filmed it

So good mate. Well done. Yummo 👌
That looks amazing!
Absolutely yummy looks absolutely delicious
Please do a dedicated puha / watercress video! Going over what the leaves look like, where to look for it etc. It looked like some of that puha looked different. Some prickly and some not... please share ! Lol
You will find I have mentioned the leaf difference in a few of my 'boil up 'videos
Love it Mike you are so passionate! Best Mukbang ever
💯 love them,we boil ours without changing the water, I like the salt in them, then cook frybread and thats it. Bloody awesome..$400 a bucket aint cheap lol.
Yarmmy watching this again! 😋😋🤗🤗
Haha, yes might have to gather some puha for the basic fatty pork chop boil up now it's Wednesday today.😅
@WekaDigitalMediaNZ lol the fattier the bettera 😋😋
Absolutely awesome bro.. love it so much
It didn't get any better than that bro🤘🏾
Puha requires so much patience to clean.. I love the entire process..Worth it..Makes for a beautiful enjoyable kai..
Mmm and I’d put a big Maori bread dough under the Titi while it cooks to absorb all that fat.. Similar to what middle eastern people do when they cook their mutton over charcoal, and eat it..Not waste anything … So delicious. Fattening but hey, it’s an expensive delicacy. Get in while the going is good🤣🤣🤣🙏🏽
That's a good idea about the rewana underneath capturing the hinu, get your moneys worth then👌🏾
Everytime I see your videos I get hungry and I only watch them when I'm eating cool video bro mean maori mean
Keep up the solid Content thank you

I knew watching this would make me hungry for Titi 😂
Those quick tastes test ne matua 😂
Awesome video brotha!
Chur bro 👍
Titi is a luxury... long time since I've eaten one... only ate them boiled and puha hard to come by in Auckland. Such an abundance of puha... you are blessed. Motivated now to do a bacon bone boil-up for me ... with kale? Will have to get on train to Sth Auck. to get watercress at GI. Marae kitchens are so well-equipped now and clean. Still remember days when food was cooked in big pots hanging over open fire in kauta. A, tena koutou, ka pai hoki te pikitia nei.
Yum....frikin yum!
Whoooah....geez boi you must clear the household out when you go to the toilet 😂. Awesome 👍
I been eating a lot of toroi lately, but now it's never enough, it's a perfect side dish with anything or sweet as just by itself I should make a.bucket full but after everyone takes a jar home I'm back to square 1 geeeez

Bro stop it 😂😂 I’m thinking that’s me tonight titi and puha
I could eat that myself thanks 😀
Rubba the puha whisperer haha
I love watching your videos, especially when you are collecting puha. I do have a question about it though, is puha the name of the plant or is it just any wild green? I ask because I can tell that you are picking two different plants.
Puha is known as milk thistle and there are maybe 3 different varieties
Can you use the roots of the puha? Like a tea or coffee style of drink? Love the birds too
Dandelion roots be better for a tea
@@WekaDigitalMediaNZ ok cheers for that ☕️
