I used to have islander niehgbours who would every fortnight make a hungi, sit around with the family sing and then would go around with a plate to the nearby neighbours. Man they were a nice family. Always happy, chearful and polite. Never ever find people like that ever again. Shout out to Harry and his wife Ella. From Yagoona, NSW. We miss you guys

Thanks for posting the video. Every New Zealander and Māori I have met in Australia have been good people. I went to a restaurant once called food star. The place was packed with islander people who were celebrating a wedding that day. They were having a good time and singing songs. Cheers from Australia.

Really nice to see all the hard work going into the preparation for the Hangi.
Back in 2010 I visited New Zealand, my travel companion has family living there and one of his cousins had a good relationship with a Maori family.
We arrived at Christmas eve at Auckland after a 22 hour flight from the Netherlands, then a 40 minute drive took us to Piha beach.
After a short night sleep because of the jet lag we were invited to attend to the Christmas Hangi this family had organised.
We did only see the opening of the pit and the food taken out, the food was delicious and our thanks to the family great, it was a very special and heart warming welcome to New Zealand for us
In this video I could see the whole proces, and the whole atmosphere of the family gathering exactly as how I remembered it.
    Kia Ora from the Netherlands.

Hey Trev, awesome video! Just a friendly precaution to you guys for your health and safety. Be mindful that most commercial pallets have arsnic in the timber as a treatment, and possibly other chemicals I'm unaware of, which in turn might contaminate your food, thus inadvertently poisoning you and your whanau. Especially with this hangi method of building the fire and iron implements directly over the food pit, which I think is a genius idea if using untreated timber. I actually would love to have a go at making a hangi this way. Be safe, and God bless you and your whanau in Jesus' name.

Appreciate what you’re saying, the pallets we use are not treated except heat treated and there nothing wrong with using them 😝😝😝😝

Just a question which part of the Hangi is traditional prior to the Europeans arriving in New Zealand. My guess is the hole in the ground as all the meat from Pork, Chicken, Lamb, Beef and Venison were all introduced by the Europeans.

your dog looks identical to my dads half papillion half terrier. great dogs they are with great nature. i want to encourage you to get his teeth looked at and cleaned evry year because our poor boy ended up needing most teeth pulled all at once because we never thought of it. poor boy must have been in pain too. hope this helps.

I normally dig my pit the night b4 and use native and black wattle for burning and only use pallets inbetween the gaps also dig a second pit for the ash one match and we’r burning 5/6 hours total start to finish depending on how many people I am feeding on average 50/60 people
