I've met them a few times in Brixton and Milton Keynes.. They write their own bars. All they did was ask their granddaughter what is today's word for this and that.. For example they say money, we say P's etc .. They say Gun we say Mash etc .. They are legit AF .. Don't doubt them just appreciate the work.
From my own read-in on theese geezers, they actually write the bulk of their own rhymes, but then ask their grand-kiddies to help them with modern street vernacular so that the youth of today can relate. They then go back and add the corrections or suggestions to the rhyme.
It’s actually two comedians who hire actors for the videos. They sound different live and can barely rap. But it’s still really impressive given the writers are writing in character, and can cater to all the strange characters they come up with for Sindhu World.
I love the "You can throw fists but the mash bang quicker" bar but it goes over the heads of most US reactors heads. A few get that a "mash" is UK slang for a firearm but, also, "bangers and mash" is an incredibly popular dish in the UK, basically sausage and mash potatoes with onion gravy. I love the bar mainly because I love bangers and mash, not so keen on the firearms myself, lol
Even if you don't know the slang if you're a rhyme aficionado you _should_ be able to surmise what they're talking about, innuendo or not. Granted most people I've seen that do react to it are more on the common listener side so they just look lost 25% of the time.
not from the UK, didn't know this, but picked it up during the song. it's so well written that it was easy to learn the vernacular mid-bar. shit goes hard.
7:58 - "Mess with the cake and I'll battenberg him" (bat & 'berg him), batternberg cake is made by slicing up different colors/flavors of cake and rearranging them into a checkerboard pattern. In the UK ambulances have a checkerboard pattern. Beat and slice you up and rearrange your bits until you need an ambulance.
Might be a stretch but I have also heard the theory that it is also I'll bat ( as in baseball bat) and 'berg him( as in iceberg, ice him i.e. kill him)
@@Nibininberg refers to burglary. So mess with that cake and I'll battenberg you (reference cake from the line before).meaning you mess with my money then I'll bat you and burglarize you. It's a great line
The Battenburg line is fucking bonkers. A Battenburg is a cake that's made by slicing different cakes up and putting them together. Because of the checkerboard pattern it's also slang for an ambulance. Then Pete slides in with "Kipling" that's ANOTHER kind of cake. Also, Bas is a classically trained musician so it makes sense that he's usually more complex.
I’ve been following them a few years, along with the rest of the UK scene. Judging from what they’ve said in interviews, and kinda reading some context clues here and there I think the most accurate and fair way to put it is that Pete and Bas write their verses with co-writer/s.
I just don't get why you still question their writing...I mean they have said in interviews that they write their own material with help from their grandkids on current slang. Always glad to see Pete & Bas!
They definitely write their own bars. “Had a dream like Martin Luther, fell asleep to the sound of the hoover” is a bar in itself, but also hints at hoovers supposed involvement into dr Luther’s death.. “coming out in a fresh Ben Sherman” that is a proper old school geezer brand of shirt as opposed to the Canada goose/Gucci the young guys wear. The thought process into the cadence and triple layers of meaning in the lyrics 100% comes from older wiser heads 👏
