I like Johnny Depp's portrayal of Barnabas Collins. (Note the correct spelling of his name, please) He tries to incorporate some of Jonathan Frid's portrayal, and adds his own stamp on the character. Barnabas was a very unique character, and if you ever get the chance to watch the original series of Dark Shadows, do it! It was quite good for its era! ~Janet in Canada
I am guessing that they want to make it a point that she is a smart and determined lady, and will take no chances until he has earned her trust. So the instant she sees him as a threat to her family, she will try her best to cut him to pieces. Now that's a real woman there.

A creature who drinks the blood of humans, often killing them in the process. And you have two children you love very much, who mean everything to you. Would you just open the door and say, "Come right in, kettle's just boiled"? No. You'd be ready for anything. Prepared to defend your home, your family, your life, by whatever means necessary. You would hope that things won't come to that, but you'd be ready for it, just in case.
