  • In this video we will look at a car that helps people transition from fossil fuel to full electric. The problem: most people have never heard of it. Watch the video to find out how I bought the car for under $20K new.

    I had missed a couple of questions about the $6,500 on my receipt: 7:01 . I plan on making another review video soon about my thoughts after 1 year (more than 1 year now) and I will explain this in more detail. But just so everyone knows that I am not trying to be deceitful, I will briefly explain it now. The car out the door was $26,200 as shown on the receipt. We received the $7,500 tax credit as I mentioned which brought the total down to $18,700. That is simply total cost of the car - tax rebate. My wife had a VW Jetta with tons of miles that we traded in and got $6,500 for the car. This is not calculated in my cost of this car in this video. Our total cost out the door was $12,200 after the trade in. Unfortunately, Honda moved all the cars to CA and it is hard to get a deal like this now.

      You are totally correct about them all going to California. My local dealer did a search and he could not find One in the seven surrounding states. I had already found one the next state over which I told him about so he knew about that one and except for that one that was the only one he could find. I even searched Charlotte North Carolina area and the Nashville Tennessee area and no dealership had one

      @@TheCommonSenseProfessor I purchased a used 2018, Clarity Touring at the end of 2020. I love it. I took a 4,700 mile trip with it and really enjoyed driving it across America. I love my Clarity, it’s such an underrated car. Honda spent no money to advertise the Clarity and if it wasn’t for the government incentives they probably wouldn’t be selling at all. I’m really happy with my purchase considering the actual price after the $7,500 rebate from the Federal Government and a $1,500 rebate from California was right around $20,600 for a 2019 Clarity Touring. I’m also receiving a $1,000 from Edison on my electric bill. So far I’ve driven about 2,200 miles on it in just over a month and have filled up my tank maybe 4 times for a total just under $60 spent on gas... Wow!! The value on this car is so great at that price! It actually sells in Japan for over $50,000 dollars!!! How do we get it at such a low price is beyond me... hope they improve a couple of things on it and have a new generation in the future.

      how much "louder" is it really when the engine/gas does kick in? I hear the Volt is quieter, but the volt is also a compact car. The clarity look like an amazing medium size car like the Accord or Toyota Camry. But when it switches to gas mode, is it really "that loud" as some people claim or is it really just a sound of an engine turned on lol. I like that you can force the engine on the highway like the Volt's "hold mode" does

    Great summary! I bought a 2018 Clarity Touring about a month ago. It is a great car. Mine had only 25,000 miles on it, but it came from NYC so it sustained a few bumps and bruises during its first four years. So I dusted off my amateur body shop skills and have been resolving many of the scratches and scrapes with touch up paint, refinished wheels, and a tail light from eBay that does not fill up with water. I just really wanted the crimson pearl with the tan leather interior. The car itself is wonderful. The interior is spotless and the car just works well. You are right, it is fun to drive too. My other car is an newer Escalade that I use now for towing and hauling, which I love. But the Clarity is just more fun and much cheaper to drive. A heads up to all who may be looking. Prices are up and rising. Since I bought mine I have seen many comparable 2018s and 2019s with asking prices over $30,000 which is very close to what they sold for new. Still, given where gas prices have gone it still makes sense.

    Purchased mine on 2/2019 Orange County, CA. I got the 2019 Touring Model with $8500 off MSRP. I absolutely love this car. I was contemplating between buying the Clarity and the Model 3, even test drove both. Needless to say, I'm glad I went with the Clarity. I get roughly 63 miles on warm weather (68 and above) and 45 miles in cold weather (45 F). Being in SoCal with various free and cheaply-priced charging stations (I charge for free at work) it's the perfect commuter car. Thanks for making the video. Agreed 100%. Had the touring model for over a year and still love it. The Clarity was designed as an EV and virtually all owners use it that way. But the gas engine is there if you need it (for convenient travel outside of the 50-ish mile EV range - or to calm nerves if you start to find yourself low on electrons.). And frankly, it's actually better for the world than a "pure-EV". The battery-manufacturing CO2 emissions are only 20% that of a Tesla/etc., yet it is driven virtually 100% in EV-mode by the vast majority of owners. (I think I put 4 gallons of gas in it a few months back, but honestly can't recall.) It is really sad that such Plugin-hybrid EV (PHEV) platforms don't get more love. I think people hear the word "hybrid" in PHEV and don't understand that its really an EV - and an amazing one at that - as your video shows. More consumer education is needed ! Thanks for doing this.

    I bought the base model for exactly the same reasons you did. Many would consider the navigation to be important, but I consider Google to be a better navigator and entertainment option anyway. I can stream music vs having to play from storage. I have had my Clarity almost 3 years and it is my favorite car ever. It is quiet, composed, comfortable, and spacious.
    My guess is that the reason they stopped selling outside of the west coast is that people were discounting too much because in a lot of places, no one has ever even heard of the Clarity. That is too bad because it is such an amazing car, and with the $7500 tax credit (assuming one has a $7500 tax load) it is cheaper than a lot of mid range hybrids like the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which was a car that I had almost bought before I learned about the Clarity.

    Leased mine for $283 a month-in April of 2021- right before the car shortage- with $1500 down- 12k miles a year- they reduced the price $10000 off MSRP- its good to know a few good friends at a Honda dealer- - I buy at the end of lease for $15800- not bad for a $32k msrp- with rebates and selling a beat up used 2013 Hyundai Sonata to Car Max with 165k miles- My entire lease was free- and I get to buy the car as a certified used vehicle for about 50% off msrp- - as a used vehicle- I am the pre owned driver- - you never know where used cars come from and how people treat them. I have no range anxiety- love my Clarity!- since the car was a lease- the dealer took one of the rebates- since I did not own the car- I still got $5500 in state and county rebates. and $5200 for my used hyundai- with faded paint -minor body damage- 165k miles- and several accidents on the car fax- that suddenly were no longer on the car fax report- win win win!

And while the sound of a 7 gal fuel tank sounds crazy at first, when you get a free (okay, much cheaper) 38 miles per day from the battery you hardly notice gas levels in town. And even on the highway in HV mode, it gets an astonishing 65mpg. As the battery is slowly used, it lasts most of the trip. It only gets 45mpg when the battery is discharged.

    We have had ours for a year and a half. We take many long distance trips in ours and you have a hard time beating the gas milage. At 70-75 MPH we get around 45 mpg. When my wife follows the motorhome and we don't take it over 60 MPH it gets 73 MPH. My deal was down to $22,500 after rebait from the feds and state. Not as good a deal as you got but hey, a brand new car that most days I can drive around town on electricity plus overall since we bought it with 23,000 miles on it the average fuel economy has been 124 MPG gas and electric. I have a Jeep Liberty that used to be our go to car. Gas milage savings alone almost pays for the payment. • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  3 года назад +1

      Yes, it is the way that Honda hybrids work. Some people refer to this as their "angry bees". You have to remember that the motor acts as a generator, so when it kicks on it is not controlled directly by your gas pedal. This throws people off because you do not accelerate, but the engine sounds like you are accelerating. I encourage you to look at the Facebook Clarity owner group and join and ask all the questions you want. I agree with everything said in the video and in the comments. I, too, have grown to like the looks, and I have NEVER had a car I enjoy driving as much as this one. I got a 2018 Clarity Touring with 55 miles on it for $10,100 off MSRP, have driven it about 4,000 miles since July 2019, and have spent $35 on gas. My electricity bill has increased, but with Level II charging automatically scheduled after midnight when rates are low I am still making out like a bandit. Now that it's getting a little colder in northern Illinois I also pre-schedule climate control warming the cabin for my morning commute, and so there it that, too. I qualify for the $7500 Federal incentive, as well. Let other people scoff at the little rear finder skirts; I'm laughing all the way to the bank (in the comfort of a wonderful car).

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  3 года назад

      The answer to your first question is easy, unless someone has more information. No, you will not be able to claim the $7500 tax rebate because EV credits cannot be passed on past the original owner. Now about the noise, could you explain more? Many people complain about the motor in Hybrid (HV) mode because it is a generator and the engine revs without pushing the accelerator. I would highly suggest if you bought a Clarity to join this group on Facebook and it is filled with very knowledgeable Clarity owners: facebook.com/search/top?q=honda%20clarity%20phev%20owners%20group

    2-1/2 years with my Clarity now, and I still love it! With most of my driving local, I drive 100% electric the majority of the time. So far, the best MPG number I've seen on a fill-up is 476.5 MPG. Yes, that's correct. 2,615 miles between fill-ups, with only 5.488 gallons needed to completely fill the tank. It's gotten to the point where, at times, I've become concerned the gas in the tank might go stale. I found an incentive from my electric company on a Level 2 home charger, so my battery is full every morning. Public charging stations are fairly easy to find, and many of them are still free, so I often come home with most of my battery range intact. It's comfortable, roomy, very smooth, and quiet. I love the feeling of accelerating under electric-only power. I've never driven a Tesla, or any of the high-performance EVs, so I can't compare the sensation in those. I just know I like the way my Clarity responds when I ask more from it. My wife is also happy for me to be in a larger car then the Civic I drove for more than a decade. As far as its looks, I've only had compliments, although that really doesn't matter to me. I've long been of the opinion the most important styling element for the driver is the view from behind the wheel. In the drivers' seat, the skirts are invisible. My only complaint is that Honda does not seem to be moving to 100% electric vehicles as quickly as some other manufacturers. I plan on keeping my Clarity for the foreseeable future.

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor

      Thank you for your comments. I could not agree more as I too am still in love with my Clarity after 1 1/2 years. I have heard absolutely nothing but good things about the looks. IMO the Clarity is absolutely the most uncompromising PHEV out there. Tesla's are awesome, I rode in a S, but you still have to compromise with long trips. I drive a Volt on regular basis, and the compromise is space. I will say, if the Rav4 Prime was out a couple of years ago, I might have had a hard time between that and the Clarity, but overall, I am extremely pleased.

      @@TheCommonSenseProfessor I test drove a Volt when I was shopping for a new car. The battery hump in the backseat was far too obtrusive. Also, it's a good thing the Volt has blind spot monitoring, because the blind spot in that car is enormous . The back window looks like the end of a tunnel in the rear view mirror. On top of that, the Chevy dealer I talked to was trying to be coy about incentives being offered by the state where I live! I also test drove the all-electric Bolt, which, inspite of its less appealing interior, was my first choice, but I just couldn't get there on price with the dealers near me. Someday, I'll go fully electric, but for now, I'm perfectly at home in my Clarity.

      how much "louder" is it really when the engine/gas does kick in? I hear the Volt is quieter, but the volt is also a compact car. The clarity look like an amazing medium size car like the Accord or Toyota Camry. But when it switches to gas mode, is it really "that loud" as some people claim or is it really just a sound of an engine turned on lol. I like that you can force the engine on the highway like the Volt's "hold mode" does

    • @samhannigan3089
      @samhannigan3089 2 года назад

      Not gonna lie. It makes some noise. It takes some getting used to because the gasoline engine sometimes performs as a generator under the hood. If you’ve ever heard what a gas generator sounds like when the power load picks up, that’s what it reminds me of. It’s like the revs don’t correspond to your pressure on the accelerator pedal. The Clarity doesn’t have an engine tachometer. The display shows you how much relative power you’re using, or how much regenerative power you’re putting back into the battery. The sound from the gasoline engine isn’t a deal breaker for me because there’s so much I like about the car. Also, if I’m only driving around locally, I can go for weeks at a time without ever using anything but battery power.

    • @randomvideotosee
      @randomvideotosee 2 года назад

      @@samhannigan3089 my understanding after further resaerch and light test driving is to make good use of regular "HV" button when going on the highway. This "holds" the battery level and good to keep a battery of sometimes at least 40% if you are going uphill especially. Seems like the more you keep the battery not completely drained for long trips, the better you dont have to worry about too much generator usage. I'll just use EV for most of the city and if im going farther than 35+ miles round trip, ill use HV on the highway whenever going over 50mph.

    How were you able to negotiate such huge chunks of money off the MSRP? The current CA rebate is $4500, and the $7500 federal rebate is only if your federal taxes is greater than $7500. So only $4500 is the only rebate that reduced the MSRP. I am looking to purchase this car as well. I really enjoyed the combination and Honda brand.

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor

      Thanks for Asking Rajan, it is a great car. I apparently caught it at the right time. I live in KY and bought it in IN right before Honda decided to ship all of the inventory to CA so dealers were giving huge discounts. Another thing that helped me was that I bought it mid-2019 and my car is a 2018. It was new, but this might be a way that you can find a deal in CA. Remember, my car is the base model, but I was able to negotiate it out the door for alittle over $26k. I have a side business, in addition to being a professor, so I had no problem with the $7,500 rebate. I just got my Clarity today, and this car offers all the advantages without the high maintenance costs. It uses the best of both worlds: electricty for low speed driving, and gas for the highway where gas engines work the best. To be able to charge it at home is a great feeling. It is so quiet when using electricity, adding the comfort of the interior. Honda used eco friendly material for the interior,; it is 99 % recyclable (yes batteries are recyclable today). And if you worry about the battery, in order to make it usable for a long time, you will be using 12 Kw at the most out of a 17Kw battery; this is why Honda offers such a solid warranty of the hybrid system.

    I just purchased a 2121 Clarity. I will say that it is a fine car, but I do have a problem. It seems that it’s Honda’s forgotten car. There have been absolutely no updates in the last 4 years,
    except the price going up a bit. It has a lot of bells and whistles, like lane keep assist, distance keeping cruise control, back up camera, and an infotainment system which includes android auto, and Apple CarPlay. The problem is that it still has the 2018 versions of these things. There have been many improvements to these items in other cars (including other Hondas). They have had plenty of opportunities to fix some of the issues, such as the strange side camera, the seats, and the clunky infotainment system, they even could have rounded out the wheel wells to make the car more appealing to some, but haven’t. I’m not sure why Honda is still even making this car, if the sales are minimal, and they have no interest in changing that. With all that said, do I like the car? The answer is absolutely. I’m one of those people that only occasionally drives over 50mi a day, so I almost never use gas. It’s perfect for me. I just think of what this car could be, and what it could be for Honda.

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  3 года назад

      I could not agree more. I do not know if it is lack of competition, or lack of interest, but Honda could do so much with the Clarity. I love my 2018, and I got a great deal on it, but I would feel the same as you if I bought the 2021. I also think that if Honda could get the range up on the EV to around 250 miles that it would be a strong competitor to other EVs. I think that Honda is missing out.

    base model in USA dont have leather seats

      You are correct. As I mentioned in the video, the base model has faux leather surrounded seats. www.insideevsforum.com/community/index.php?threads/clarity-interior-look-feel-base-vs-touring.2723/

    Fully loaded, but no full leather and navigation? Not fully loaded. I test drove it. When the engine cut in, it was loud….like a very small engine car. Volt, aside from the small back seat, was smoother. Still, a good price.

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  3 года назад

      Why would you need navigation with Carplay or Android Auto? The seats are faux leather wrapped compared to the full faux leather, so there is that, but I would still consider it loaded, as do most of the people that have reviewed the car. To each his/her own, but I have owned the car for two years with zero issues and drive a Chevy Volt all the time at work. This car is better in almost every way, but again, that's my opinion, but I would have never got the Volt with the features in my Clarity for under $20K new. That is a fact.

      The only time I notice the fender skirt is when wash it. It is really hard to wash the part of the tire behind the skirt. Generally I do not even notice it and I still love my car after 20K miles.

    Sorry but in most aspects prius is better unless you want bigger or better looking vehicle.
    The range of the clarity Is too small at under a combined 400 mile
    The prius has a 630 mile combined range

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  10 месяцев назад +1

      That really depends on what you need the car for. For me, the Prius would not have been as economical as the Clarity. I drive mostly in town and have made it almost 5 months without having to get gas before. A Prius would not do this for me. Arguably, the new Prius Prime would be close, but good luck getting one, and especially for the price I bought my Clarity for. I still have this car and it is still amazing and exactly what I need and much more roomy and luxurious than a Prius, like you said. If you don't mind the difference in room and you are making a bunch of long trips, then I agree with you, buy a Prius. If you drive mostly under 50 miles a day, then get the Clarity IMHO (if you can find one now). Thanks for the comment.

    #1 reason why Clarity lack of sales. It's ugly unless you like ugly looks buy a current Honda generation model cars. They are absolutely ugly, they have been a huge disappointment since 2012. Honda really needs to find a different design team in totality . Honestly I can't see a good side to this Clarity, Honda usually has at least one good looking angle to look at, this car has none.
    I chose the Prime because it's a hatch, much more practical for storage vs trunk.
    Prius Prime has better styling, they are ugly but at least it's easier on the eyes. Prime has a better looking front and rear end. I love my 2021 Prime, replaced it with my favorite 2013 Prius plug in. Mind you I don't plug either of my cars in because mathematically it costs more to plug it in vs gas prices these days. Do your math, check what you pay per KW and the miles you get in EV mode. My prime gets 23 miles per charge X 8kw. each KW is 30 cents where I live off peak times. It gets 54 mpg on gas alone.
    Bottom line is beauty or lack of it is in the eyes of the beholder, pick your ride as you may like I did.

    • @TheCommonSenseProfessor
      @TheCommonSenseProfessor  3 года назад +1

      Opinions are like....well you know. I know that you are invested in the Prime, so enjoy 20 something miles of EV range. That would never work for me. You should have waited for the Rav4 Prime. The Prius is the better hybrid for sure, but the Clarity is the better EV, and I think that the Prius is the ugliest thing on the road, and I have heard several people say the same. The inside of the Clarity blows the Prius away too. Whatever turns your crank though. Also, I got the car for under $20K after rebates (another advantage of the Clarity vs Prime) and negotiating the price down because dealers were shipping the inventory to California. The car sales for $34K now before the rebate.

That brings the price down to $22K for the base. Here is the crazy thing, this is one of the few cars that won't drop in value when you drive it off the lot. Carvana offered me $22.5K for my car with almost 30K miles. ev.pge.com/vehicles/Honda_Clarity_Plug-In_Hybrid__PHEV_2021

      Its a love hate kind of car when it comes to the looks. Everyone thinks that our car is an accord (maybe the blacked out windows and black car hides the differences). But the reason the sales are so low is because Honda did not want to sell them (look it up). They did not advertise the car, dealers outside of CA had no clue about the cars, and they shipped all of their inventory to CA only. This was their compliance car and no one knows about it. Also, I probably would not have bought it for the $34K sticker price.
