Great video, thank you... i
I was an Engineering Technician with a Civil Engineering company with an Associates of Applied Sciences in Engineering Technology. I was promoted to Engineer with the stipulation that I get my Bachelor's degree which I did. I went the BSET route in Civil Engineering. And I was allowed to take the P.E. exam without ever having taken the F.E exam because I had enough experience working in engineering under the supervision of a P.E. So now I'm a P.E. For math I had to take Calc I and Ii. I also took a course that covered Differential Equations, Matrices, Statistics and Probability.
Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your success story. Be thankful that you live in a state that allow ET graduates to take their PE exam. Half the states do not do this. Also, Civil Engineering is a little different animal than other engineering disciplines. The PE is almost a requirement for CEs, but that is not the case with other disciplines. Thanks again for sharing and congratulations again.
@@TheCommonSenseProfessor you are correct that a P.E. is almost a requirement for Civil Engineers. And Structural Engineers. I know that M.E.s it's not as needed. My understanding is that M.E. companies get certification.

Great video, thank you in the middle of my first GET associates!
Thank you and I wish you the best of luck for your future.
Very helpful breakdown. I feel like things are shifting to favor MET …the reindustrialize movement is interesting!
I could not agree more. I believe that industry is learning the advantage of hiring graduates of "applied engineering" programs over "theoretical engineering" programs. There is nothing wrong with either one, but I think industry is valuing the MET programs more than in the past.
I watched this video when I was figuring out what type of engineering I wanted to focus on and here I am watching it again as part of an assignment for my AAS in Engineering Technology. Funny!
That is awesome. What AAS program are you attending? I need to make an updated video.
I want to pursue the EET route and just get my associates. My passion for STEM comes from being hands on, not so much the designing of it all. Although I am curious, in your experience can a technician become an engineer with their associates + time in the industry? Although I am not interested in the role, I'd take some comfort knowing what roles are available to promote into and what the pay is like. For extra context I am in Southern California. Any insight would be appreciated, thank you!
Hello, and thanks for the question. I have said this multiple times, but a technician is a great career to pursue. I also believe that the best engineers are technicians first. That being said, it really depends on the company that you work for. I have seen companies allow people in engineering roles without the 4-year degrees, but that has been rare, but it does happen. I have seen more companies allow technicians into management roles than I have engineering roles. There are programs out there that will allow you to transfer your associate's degree into a four-year engineering technology degree and complete it online. We offer one at my university. That would probably be your best option if you do decide to pursue an engineering role in the future. Also, engineering technology is applied engineering, and does not focus as much on theory and design as a theoretical engineering degree does. I hope this helps, and good luck with your future.
I absolutely adore mine! Best purchase this year, great for many types of riding
Would a 2-year applied engineering technology degree allow me to work in a non-factory seting? I like working on things with my hands but I would like to avoid shift work and be able to do part-time work. My 10 year goal is to someday be able to work part time with my skills even if that means being self employed. I don't want to limit myself to skills that can only be applied at factories that do shift schedules. Will your program put me on a path to jobs like these? I assume there are more part-time jobs in field repairs/service/maintenance for companies who service residential or small commercial customers (like restaurants). Will Applied Engineering help me get a job doing this or will a more specialized field like electrical or HVAC be more marketable to "non-factory" companies Thanks
@@TheHoldensNC that is a great question. There is no doubt that most automation technician jobs are for factories. There are alternative routes. One is a position in building automation. This is a field, especially in big cities, that requires the same skill set and are in demand in larger cities. This also requires the same basics skills as in Factory, but it would not be part time that is needed is in municipalities working with wastewater. There are some certifications that you have to get equipment is a process. One last option that I can think of is in the field of natural gas, oil, and other process fields like that. I’m not talking about working in refineries but in the field. I hope this helps.
This guy is amazing. He just helped me make up my mind.
I am so glad that the video helped. Please let me know if you have anymore questions!
No circuit breaker?
Your answer is on the first page: cdn.automationdirect.com/static/specs/clickpower.pdf
My autistic son went to a local community college to study electrical technology because he wanted to be an electrician. After he finished the program the only jobs he could get are in factories doing maintenance type work. He doesn't mind the work but the problem is that he doesn't fit in with the blue-collar environment. He's been fired from several jobs because of his inability to fit in with that crowd. I've suguested that he needs to work in a higher level environment and I discovered manufacturing engineering technology yesterday at a local university. It seems like this would be a better fit for him yet still put him in an environment that he enjoys. Since childhood he loves to build things coming up with his own designs and improving on existing designs. This seems like a good career fit for him.
Yes, many people think that an associates in engineering technology prepare graduates to be electricians, but they do not. There was a study done some time ago that shows that many engineers are on the spectrum, so you are probably right about him fitting in better in this field. I am glad that you guys figured that out for your son. www.imeche.org/news/news-article/engineers-score-highly-in-autism-quiz-220414-1

I’m going to an accelerated technical college for my bachelor’s in mechatronics engineering technology that’s ABET accredited. But I still want to become an actual engineer. What do I have to do to obtain my pe from my bachelor’s in engineering technology?
That all depends on the state that you will be working at. Half of the states accept engineering technology graduates to sit for their PE, and they each have different rules. I do wonder if you are required to get your PE, because once you do, you will have to hold your license associated with your new liability. Also, I do not know which PE you are looking into, but ISA offers a Controls System Engineer PE that is closely related to mechatronics. Here are the rules by state: www.harborcompliance.com/engineer-license-requirements-registration
What else do you show in this program what can I control physical to show students
Thanks for all this information! I'm tired of working a desk job as I love working with my hands, I've been doing some research on engineering and it seems like some people look down on the technicians and the associate's degree, I've even read an associate's is useless cause some companies hire techs without degrees. But I work in a union that pays for school and I finally want to take advantage of it and better myself, is there a big difference between an associate's degree in EET and MET? will either land me a desired technician role?
Hello. Congratulations on starting a new journey, and no, an AAS is not pointless. I can tell you of many examples of people who got their AAS degree and it opened the door for them to get a very good paying job. As far as MET vs EET, I would encourage you to go to the ET route if you want to get a job as an industrial technician. There are other options as well like mechatronics or automation. If you can find a program that focuses on PLC programming that would help you out a lot in the job market. I actually started with an AS inEET I just never stopped. It is definitely a good degree, but sometimes they are a little outdated depending on the school. Again, I would definitely choose a program with PLC and robotics in it. There are other options as well if you want to get into the process filled. Jobs in the power industry, chemical, and other process plants pay really well as well. An ET degree might get your foot in the door, but you might also want to look for a degree instrumentation if that is the route you might want to go. I hope this helps!
This is helpful thank you
I am glad that it helped

I am a 18-year-old and wanting to become a professor in the future. My plans are to get my 4 year degree in health and physical education and get my master's and PhD in exercise physiology and nutrition. Do you think I could eventually find a job at a university with the education ill have. I'm planning on getting experience also teaching health and physical education while I'm getting my master's and being a certified personal trainer.
Hello, yes I think that your plan sounds very solid. I did not know that I was going to be a professor until after I graduated with my bachelor's and spent about 8 years in my profession. If I had of known, I would have done things completely different. One thing that I would suggest is to talk to some professors in that field to understand their requirements for tenure and promotion. I would also look up the salaries as they vary so much between the different fields. Good luck to you.
Thank you so much for your help!@@TheCommonSenseProfessor
you won't - tenure track jobs in everything are too scarce. you are better off going outside of academia
I am interested in becoming a university professor I would like to teach photography and film studies, I would like to persue a MFA in Art Studio with a concentration in Photography, and this case I could teach photography and film studies at a university level since an MFA has been declared as a terminal degreee.
That is great. Keep it up, and good luck. Yes, Photography is one of the majors were the master's degree is the terminal degree. Keep me posted on how it goes.
I hadn’t heard of the Clarity until just a month or two ago. Thanks for the video - now I want one!
I still have mine and I have over 50K miles on it and have had one small issue with the washer fluid pump. Other than that, it has been, and still is, a perfect car for what I need.
I stumbled across this and found it very interesting. When I went to school I didn’t know or maybe this option was around. I always liked chemistry (Chem Eng.) but like to be more hands on. Sounds like a 4 year technology program would have been for me.
Hello professor I have been thinking about switching from EE to EET in North Carolina I was accepted by a university in my state that is ABET credited I will graduate from a community college with and associates in engineering degree so I have taken calc 1 to calc 3 and differential equations and physics 1 and 2 I’m just tired of all the math and I don’t think I can take more maths classes like that but I like doing labs in physics I enjoy things like that. Will switching mess up all the work I have done for the part 2 and a half years
Thank you for reaching out to me. It really depends on the program. Generally EET degrees only require Calc 1, but some require Calc 2. Also, most require Physics 1 & 2, but algebra based instead of calculus based. If you find a more theoretical EET degree at your university, then you will probably not loose too many credits. If it were me, I would put your unused math and science classes towards your technical electives, but that depends on your advisor, but it is something that you might want to push. I would meet with an advisor from both programs and have them lay out your graduation plan for both. The biggest problem with switching now is that an EET student will generally start core classes their Freshman year, while an EE student generally waits until their Junior year. If you switch, it might put you behind a little, but again, you will not know until you meet with an advisor. I hope that this helps.
@@TheCommonSenseProfessor do you think EET is a good field to go into everyone has told me it is and I can earn good money part of the reason I like it but I also like it because I get to build things
I cannot tell you about your area, but in my area, it is a good area, and you will generally make as much money as you would with an EE as long as you go into some type of controls or automation. I would be sure and try to take all of the PLC/robotics classes that you can take. @@robertmejia200
@@TheCommonSenseProfessor one more question they changed the program to electro mechanical engineer they said the EET program was out dated but they said the program is similar hopefully I can get work in this field I am very excited to start in the fall
That is actually a good thing, and they are right. I teach Electromechanical Engineering Technology, and it is a very competitive, high paying career. It is a terrible name as most of my graduates are control engineers, or automation engineers. The reason that I suggested taking as many PLC and automation classes that you could with the EET degree was because this is the future of manufacturing, and the EMT degree should embed the PLC and automation classes into their program @@robertmejia200
In Canada, particularly in the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec, dealers would have sold 100 times as many; unfortunately, Honda only delivered a few units a year. I was very lucky to buy this car.
It was the same here in the states. I live in KY, not a very green state, and very few people heard about the Clarity, but when they see my car and find out how it works, they love it. My car is still going strong after 50K plus miles.
Thank you so much for the information. I am curious nowadays. Are there positions for 100% remote professor for online/distant learning?
You are welcome, and yes there are distant positions available, but they are somewhat uncommon. Most of the remote positions are for adjuncts. You can do a search here and filter only remote faculty positions: www.higheredjobs.com/faculty/ I hope this helps.
In Europe, a masters level education is required for engineering. A bachelor's degree is considered engineering technology.
I know that things are quite a bit different than education in the US. Canada is quite a bit different than us too. Honestly, the European model makes much more sense that what we do in the states. Most people here just do not understand Engineering Technology. I am fighting that now with my promotion committee at my university. Thanks for the comment.
Great video, im currently enlisted in the U.S. Navy and currently making a pivot in my career to pursue college but continue in my field of Petroleum, would you have any insight to how I can apply an engineering degree to my 10 years of experience?
First, thank you so much for your service. I would try to find a military friendly, regionally accredited college that will give you credit for your trainings in the Navy. I don't know much about Petroleum Engineering, but it seems that most programs are Engineering and not Engineering Technology, so you also need to make sure that the program is ABET accredited. It looks like the best programs are in the Northwest and Southwest US, so I would make my decision based on them accepting your credits. I have helped many veterans transition into college life, and I would highly encourage you to also find a college that has a strong VA program and participate with their activities as much as you can. In my experience, this is so important for you. It is sometimes difficult for veterans, who are older and more mature, to take classes and do group projects with younger students who have no clue what you have gone through for the past 10 years. The VA programs really help this transition. I hope that this helps you. Let me know if you have more questions.
This has been the best, most in depth video about this subject. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
I am so sorry that my microphone was going out this entire video. Please overlook that, thank you.
Brilliant idea... When students become interested in the aspects of engineering that they like, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities... Nice looking strats! and a tele!
I am sorry this is blurry. I don't know why it does this when I upload this sometimes.
Thank you very much for continuing to improve the engineering field. I always believed that EET was more job relevant than a traditional EE program since the EE syllabus is very rigid and very oldschool (chemistry 1 and 2 for EE, really?). EET can break away from that and adapt faster with new courses.
Thank you for your comment. Yes I agree. I really think the biggest issue is ABET accreditation. Don't get me wrong, I understand the purpose of ABET, but we chose not to be ABET accredited so we can make sure our program is updated to keep up with industry.
Fantastic video
Thank you!
Can you explain the difference between Engineering Technology and Construction Technology?
Yes. Many times Construction Technology is an engineering technology program. We had Construction Engineering Technology at my college and they changed their name to Construction Management but it did not change anything about the program, just the name. Generally a 4 year degree in Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or Construction Management leads to a Construction Manager's position. Because of this 4 year degrees in construction fall somewhere in between a business and an engineering technology degree. Since there is very little design involved within construction programs, there is less math (not always, but many times). This is why some colleges, like mine, chooses to take engineering out of the name of the degree. In our area, this is a very popular program with very high salaries for graduates. I hope this helps.
When our daughter bought the Clarity over the Prius, I thought it was a mistake. They have three kids and the Clarity has much more room plus if they watch their driving, they don't need gas. They recently bought a Tesla and we got the Clarity. I am warming up to the car for the economy and size. The exterior design is quirky but it has so many plusses that the looks fade into the background.
Yeah, I stop caring about what the car looks like years ago. We still have ours and still love it.

It is very interesting to hear about the career path of a professor in a different field in a different region of the country. I teach English and creative writing at a larger California State university. We're not a research university but we will probably be R2 w/in the next 5 years. I also taught community college for many years before coming to the university. Here in CA community college profs often make more than Cal State profs. Strange but true. The salaries are also much higher than you describe. My base salary when I left community college teaching was $90k and w/ extra classes and summer teaching I usually made considerably more than that, which is much more than I make now. Profs in Business and other higher demand fields make far more than I do, of course.
Thank you for your comment. I expect salaries for California faculty to be higher than my state (Kentucky) since there is such a big difference in the cost of living, but I am very surprised about the salaries of community college faculty compared to university faculty in California. I don't know if there is a difference in teaching loads, but I teach 3 classes a semester (with labs) at the university and I had to teach 5 classes at the community college. We are also expected to publish 3 journal articles, or other forms of creative work, for tenure and promotion. This is the minimum, but just gives you an idea of the expectations of our comprehensive university. Thanks again for your comment.
@@TheCommonSenseProfessor You are right. The difference in pay across states is strictly cost of living related. Not a single one of us is getting rich, or even particularly well off (well, maybe a few Business profs are, but that's a different world over there...). Interestingly, b/c there are fewer research and committee demands at the community college, there is a lot more free time to make extra money, but the main reason the CC profs make more money in CA is that they have yearly steps and at Cal St. we do not. We have to negotiate every pay raise as individuals (except a 9% bump at tenure) by seeking out competing offers from other universities. Anyway, I'm blabbing too much. The guy who hired me at the community college was a transplanted Kentuckian. That bluegrass is beautiful, I hear. Be well and thanks for your commentary!
