    I’ve had my clarity since 2018. And I never could understand why Honda did not feature it or advertise it or anything. At the time, I think it was the best plug-in hybrid on the market, and I still think that it’s right up there. I can get up to 50 miles on a charge, and I rarely put gas in it - maybe once a month. It has been quite reliable, and I have no complaints, except that they stopped making it. Which just seems to me like the height of stupidity.

    • @Aslash304
      @Aslash304  2 года назад +6

      Pretty sure if they advertised this car that people would have opted for it instead of Accords, or possibly even Civics, which are both made in the US and probably have much higher profit margins. I think it was cancelled because it could have cannibalized their other sedans. It’s better in every way, except profit for Honda. Thanks for your comment, Cheers!

      They're advertising for it was crap. I only buy Hondas and I didn't even know this existed until 2021. I was in the market for a Tesla, but decided to go PHEV for a nice middle ground because of possible range anxiety and research had me discover this bad boy. Best summary on the Clarity I have seen, and the most informative. Your video is a must see for all Clarity owners. We bought our 2019 touring model new in CA. We moved to Georgia a year ago. We had the 240V charger in CA because our daily trips required a mid day charge at home in order to avoid using gas. It was worth the expense. The range was negatively affected by freeway speeds in CA, but using the paddle shifters in traffic helped. I only used sports mode when there were 4 adults in the car. It helped performance significantly when getting up to speed on the highway. Here in Georgia we rarely use the highway. Summer range often exceeds 45 miles, winter tops out at 39 miles range. Electricity cost in CA was 27 cents per KW compared to 9 cents in GA. In CA I figured the cost to operate at 22 cents per mile. In GA the cost is closer to 5 cents a mile. As I write this gas is $5.59 a gallon in Orange County, CA and $4.00 a gallon here in GA. We have 31,000 miles on the car and have had no issues. At todays gas prices our ICE car (Kia Niro @ 49 mpg) costs more than double to drive. I can't imagine ever selling the Clarity.

    a larger battery at the expense of a smaller gas tank - that's a brilliant design choice. It gives you plenty of electric range for daily driving, and the safety of the additional gas engine, and the only disadvantage is - more frequent refueling during very long trips. So it really comes down to how often you make such trips.

    • @Aslash304
      @Aslash304  2 года назад +2

      I agree. Frequent long trips are not the best use case for the Clarity. 30-60 mile daily commuters will see the most savings, but I would recommend it to anyone who drives frequently and wants to save on fuel. Thanks for your comment, Cheers!

    I have two Clarity, 2019 (~23k miles) and 2020 (~13k). When I purchased 2020 Clarity, I traded in my 2016 Camry Hybrid at $13k, and actual final upgrade cost after tax, registration, CA rebate, tax deduction was $6700. I believe most people didn't pay much for this great car. Regarding cost of ownership, my 5.9kW solar panel on my roof is great combination for these PHEVs. These days it runs ~50miles per charge which takes ~13kWh max --> Clarity doesn't use full 17kWh battery capacity to prolong the life. Since mostly I have driven Clarity only last 1.5+ years, the engine noise from my sister's car was kind of shock to me. Mostly quiet, but wind noise in highway driving is noticeable. I think that's the only Con for this car.

My plan is to use the PHEV for daily use and shorter trips and rely on my Escalade for towing my travel and utility trailers and long trips. Should earn a 5 - 10% return on my investment in the form of reduced costs, and reduce my carbon footprint by nearly 3 tons per year. This approach, combined with my wife's excellent Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and we are feeling green around here!

    I bought a Clarity by phone from California and had it delivered to Colorado in 2020. It's a fantastic car for daily driving in city and suburban environments. In mild weather it gets around 50 miles on electric only. Winter is more typically in the mid 30s. Highway driving in hybrid mode delivers 48 MPG in the flatlands. Mountain driving is a different story. This is where some drivers have a problem with the Clarity. Those who have complained about it usually don't understand it or don't want to be involved with managing the system. My first trip into the mountains did not go well when I let the
    hybrid charge drop too low. The Clarity needs the electric boost to manage steep climbs and when there is no juice, the engine screams alarmingly and the car doesn't keep up. So the trick is to manage your system to keep a charge on the battery. It does take some understanding and attention but if you don't mind being a conductor, it does fine. And there is a real satisfaction to driving uphill 45 minutes to the campsite, timing your juice to be low when you arrive so that on the way down, you recover a significant charge provided by gravity alone. And it's also great to do most of your daily chores and commutes using no gas and creating much less greenhouse gas or pollution.

    I purchased a 2018 Clarity with 14 K miles on it this past March 2022. It's still like new, and I love it! Dropping the car last year made no since??? Most people never heard of the Clarity, and I never see any on the road. My only wish is that the car had a blind spot warning for the left side, or a better mirror. My last car had a small mirror at the edge of the standard mirror, (factory, not after market), which was great. Maybe newer Clarity's may have a better blind spot set-up? I rarely drive more than 40 miles a day. The gas tank was full at the time of purchase and so far, I haven't put a drop of gas in it! It is still about 2/3 full. I've got 49K on it now and not one problem with it since the day I drove it down. I really wish Honda would have continued it because I still feel like it's the very best PHEV still. I have no idea why people dis it for so many little things, this car does exactly what you need it to do. Yes, I'm getting a little less for the milage range, but it is still in that 40+ range unless its really cold. (Which is rare in FL) For commuting less than 20 miles each way it's absolutely perfect and I have a level 2 charger so if it need it to do more when I get home I can easily make that happen in no time. I would truly get another one if I could after this one, but so far it hasn't really given me any reason to say it's "done" anytime soon. Well...it sucks that Honda discontinued the Clarity last year. Though not surprising since the company kind of treated it like a secret menu item at a burger joint. Unless you were studying the electric/hybrid scene, it's likely you didn't know anything about the car's existence. None of the dealerships around me even kept any on the lot or in the showroom. So I was wondering how long it would last given that so few people were aware of it. I was hoping to have one built fresh from the factory in another year or so after I paid off my Ford Fusion Energi, but that's impossible now. I don’t know if you would be able to extend the warranty. I would see if you can get a battery health check done by Honda if you’re concerned about the battery degradation. The worst thing about the Clarity is that it is a one-off. If you can confirm a healthy battery and get an extended warranty (you probably can’t), then it becomes a decent choice. My best recommendation is to find a full electric in the used market. They are extremely affordable at this point. I hope this helps

I put gas in the car maybe once every 6 mos and then it costs my just a few bucks as the tank is just 7 gallons and I refill it when it's a little less than half. I am definitely going to guy the car when the lease expires next February. I can't understand why Honda never promoted this car and this discontinued it.

      Honda would have cannibalized their entire gas engine market if people actually found out about this car. It’s bigger, faster, gets better miles than accord, and barely costs more. One of the best deals in autos, hands down. Congrats on a steal of a lease deal, Cheers!

I'm just sad I don't work within the EV range, or else I would never have to buy gas! I did get a 240v plug installed at home and it's so worth it. I have owned a Nissan Leaf, a Chevy Volt, and 2 Toyota Priuses, and traded the last Prius in for my Clarity. The one-year-old Clarity had been traded in on a new Toyota, so it was on a Toyota Dealer's showroom. They had had the Clarity for a couple of months, so they gave me the best deal on a car I had ever received from a dealer (I try to buy most of my cars from private owners). Indianapolis Indiana has one of the lowest electric rates in the country at 9 cents per KWH. Since I am a retiree, most of our trips are less than 50 miles per day, taking the grandkids to school, grocery shopping, or back and forth to church. Therefore, we have driven as much as 3 months without buying any of the high-priced post 2020 gasoline at all which makes me very happy. We drove the Clarity to Florida the first winter and averaged 50 MPG both going down and coming back. While in Florida, we used the Plug-Share app, and were able to charge the car every day for local driving.
    The Nissan Leaf we owned suffered from rapid battery degradation, and after 3 years would only provide about 50 miles (originally 80) on electric power; the range anxiety was terrible. The Volt was reliable and economical but cramped on the inside. The Prius is a great car, and we considered the Prius Prime, but it would only go about 20 miles on EV power. The Clarity has been trouble free for 2 years now; I change the oil and rotate the tires myself every 6 months, and expect to keep this car for a long long time. It has been my favorite EV car of all, and I have been a gas mileage fanatic ever since GM killed and crushed their version of the electric car, the EV-1. ruclips.net/video/vRnUY6V2Knk/видео.html

    • @Aslash304
      @Aslash304  Год назад

      The battery has a cooling system that could potentially need maintenance, only if damaged or leaking. but there is no way to do maintenance on a battery of that type except to replace it with new modules/cells. Thoughts of this car versus the Hyundai Ioniq Plug in Hybrid?

    • @Aslash304
      @Aslash304  2 года назад +1

      Ioniq plug in hybrid only has 29 miles of EV range max. Clarity is one and a half times that. So if you’ve got a really short commute, it could be good. You’ll find that 29 miles is not very much, though. With the Clarity, most people can do 80% of their driving in EV mode, I would expect 50-60% with the ioniq plug in hybrid. But at the end of the day, if you can get one for a good price, it will save you a lot in gas. Thanks for your comment! Cheers!

  • @HowardMoward
    @HowardMoward Год назад +1

    I own a 2018 Clarity and for the most part really enjoy the car for it's EV range with my daily commute. The only issue I've gotten with it is a severe loss of power in gas mode after it switches when the battery is fully depleted. Often this is on longer trips when my wife is driving and she's not familiar with the modes to switch to. The result is revving in gas mode with the car slowing down without any way to reset this issue without stopping and restarting the car. Has anyone experienced this? Is there an update that resolves this? I've asked Honda dealers and described it for them but they say that no one has reported this issue and they'd need to keep it for a couple of days to look into it with some basic hourly cost to charge me for. So I am hoping someone has experienced this issue?

    • @Aslash304
      @Aslash304  Год назад

      This is not an issue. The car needs to regulate the battery, and if it’s at 0 miles, then it will use the engine to charge itself. The battery is never at 0. There is buffer below zero to protect it, and this buffer needs regulated. I hope this helps. Thanks for your feedback, Cheers!
