Have a look at the shifter linkage and make sure you have all the shims required. You could also consider a DSSR to lessen the play. I make them to order @ KAZZ Engineering / Brisbane
It's a bit expensive, but the RTD shifter is an absolute game changer, and made my M3 so much more enjoyable. It doesn't require any cutting to fit either. That shifter just seems like a universal mess, for that price I would expect it to be self centering.

@@daycrew also there are some called IRP short shifters for e46 . Those ones are just like full blown racecar mode, really precise. The price for them is the same as yours but the quality is just another level. It literally just clicks in to the gears:)
Get a DSSR gear selector it fixes some play but than again that’s another $100 it’s bmw 🤷 overly engineered and so many bits that get worn down and need replacement

We got the same car but mines all black and I upgraded to Msports steering wheel and E46 M3 instrument cluster with ZHP weighted shifter handle.
Hydro brake is next install I think.

Some more knowledgeable people than us might know some fixes, but afaik the problem is unfortunately inside the gearbox :/

DSSR is a great idea, but tbh the whole gearbox could probably do with a rebuild/refresh!
