I'm glad you're continuing to get people into competitive smash I don't think the playing the game alone teaches you anything as much as these videos do I think this video should come with Smash Ultimate because every player should know the basics
Honestly, as a casual player/viewer of Smash (and someone who passed on Smash 4 because WiiU), I can safely say that Smash U teaches you fuck all outside of the very basics. I know there's a bunch of techs and stuff that the game has stashed away in the vaults, but that's a lot of reading, and the last thing anyone wants to do after getting a game is read. At least here we have visuals to demonstrate what proper execution looks like.
Good mention- the "jump" button, as well as most sets of actions (like Tilt attacks) are mappable to whatever controller option you prefer. In this video, he used button visuals for the GameCube controller. Hopefully this elaborates a bit more for you!
I'm pretty much a self taught smash player but, this guide still helped me out. Sometimes just listening to someone talk about something you already know it cements it better.
Anyone else wish they had a "beginner to pro" sort of tutorial training feature? Where it actually runs you through the basics, and shows you the different stuff you can do without being left to figure it out by yourself? Like, have a tutorial about how to combo which caters to whichever character you select so it actually teaches you the strengths and weaknesses. Have a tutorial on how to edge guard or how to learn to counter in time or how not to dodge directly into an attack on accident cause how should you know what they were going to do? Not to mention, a lot of these tutorial videos use the terminology without explaining what it means or how to do it. They simply just tell you what it's good for, but that doesn't really help when you don't what they mean by stuff like teching and they don't tell you how to do it. And the deal with frames being so important doesn't help the feelings of frustration that inevitably come with those times where you press the button to do a move that would've saved you, but somehow you still got hit first. Because of that, timing is personally the hardest thing to learn about this game, since your brain attacks with the expectation that the attack will happen as soon as you hit the button and instead you need to learn to account for the delays so you don't do stuff too early or too late
For anyone wondering why Palutena is a nice character to learn the fundamentals, that's because she has many stuff that you can practise use on other characters. Windbox with her smash attacks, knowing your distance with your side B, teleportation, easy combos with her down grab and invulnerability frames with her dash attack and her back air
As someone who has played Ike since Brawl, I can confirm he is very beginner friendly since I was a kid when Brawl came out and was still ok with him! My sister played Meta Knight and cheesed me a lot, but Ike's always been a good starter character.
There are many beginner’s guide out there, but I didn’t understand most of it since they used some words like DI and so on. In contrast, your video is very easy to understand. Subscribed :)
Man your videos help me out so much, currently my muscle memory is leading to bad gameplay, but I'm beginning to correct myself more often and understand what I did wrong.
All of my friends play on Xbox and most of them think smash is a ridiculous game. This video is the perfect thing to show them since they’re giving the game a chance right now
Yo wtf I just got smash and even though I've seen some videos before I didn't know there were SO MANY mechanics in this game. Really great video, you explained everything in a very understandable manner and didn't make it boring. You've earned my sub :)
I've been trying to improve at Smash, I thought I was starting to get decent. Turns out I didn't even know what teching, this term I'd heard thrown around a lot and just assumed was for certain kinds of combo's or recoveries or something, was. Now I've got something new to practice.
i recently became the head coach for a high school esports team and this game is on the schedule i wont lie im out of my league but after seeing this video i have a better understanding of how to coach the game and use basic strategy ... again thank you ill be hitting u up on discord to talk to my students soon
One thing that I'd like to see you expand on, movement. I feel so sluggish moving, and awkward. Understanding how to move, and what is "bad" and "good" movement would be helpful, as well as how to build simple combos, what you should generally start a combo with, how to follow it up, and what not to follow it up with generally. Thanks for the amazing guides!
That's answered as character specific. All characters have different follow ups. Ice climbers for example if your in the mood research them as a comparison to other characters.
This game is too intimidating for me. Seems fun if you're good at it though, but there's so many mechanics I probably wouldn't be able to get the hang of it. Thanks for the video though
You can also short hop by pressing two jump buttons at the same time. I have ZR set to jump and it's made all the difference in my games, since I'll switch between X and Y for jumping based on what attack I'm doing.
Me: has been playing smash bros for over a year Also me: struggles to understand anything more complex than doing an attack while pointing the move stick thing in a direction
Thank you for actually explaining the fundamentals of the game most tutorials seem to assume you already know how to play and just give tips for intermediate players or even advanced combos but I couldn't figure out how to do any of that because I only knew some basic moves.
This video was actually useful, every time I have watched a video on how to improve, its never worked, all I knew before was how to attack, shield, dodge, and move. I learned way more than I thought I would. Good job
BEGINNERS! AS A FELLOW BEGINNER, YES, THIS IS A LOT. BUT FUNNY ENOUGH, YOU SEE THIS SAME SITUATION IN PROGRAMMING WHICH IS WHY I GIVE THIS ADVICE: The golden trick is to hop between the guide and matches. Mind that you're EXPECTED not to win. You won't remember everything on any given watch, hell, you won't remember most of it. But when you go between matches and the guide, everytime you watch the guide, you'll go "Oh! That would've been useful here!" and you'll slowly learn to use your kit. From there, it's practicing the controls.
I have the same problem. Using a gamecube controller, first I thought it could be the shoulder buttons, but I tried Z and X and it is still as impossible/unreliable.
This video gave me a deeper prospective on gameplay. I use ‘Toon Link’ as my main and playing him in neutral caught my attention. Each timing and speed of Toon Links movements is like a dancer. From short hops, Aerial and tilt you are moving in a tune. Especially the movements reminded me of ‘Zelda and the Wind Waker’ gameplay so it was second nature to hone techniques.
Thank you for this, I’m currently teaching/coaching about 7 of my friends who want to get into competitive play and this will be great to share to them
This greatly helped me out. I was struggling to get a good handle on how to play the game correctly last night when playing against some people online. I didn't know how to do certain attacks and had to resort to just clicking A and B at random. I did some basic practice as Mario to understand the moves, and then moved over to Samus to see how the moves translate over to different characters. Now I think I'll be able to hold my ground against other players. I'll try and start seeing which characters I'm good with. Right now it seems I'll be pretty good with Samus, so she'll be my main for now.
Idk how this video got 500 dislikes. This video by far is the most comprehensive and detailed tutorial I seen yet and its straight to the point and well laid out... good job dude👍🏽👍🏽💯
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! I’ve been everywhere trying to find decent guides and is have finally found one which explains LITERALLY EVERYTHING! Like I didn’t even know about parrying and teching! Thanks for the vid!
I've been playing Smash for years and was always okay, but I decided to get better! This video was really helpful, there was a lot of stuff I learned! For example, one of my issues is that I never tech and roll too often. I'm really looking forward to getting better at the game :D
I am so happy I found this it was confusing and made so much sense at same time and helped instead of other tutorials just talking about mains and my will to play

I love how you say: " press the jump button " me, an absolute beginner, "what the **** is a jump button?!"
What ever you set it to it is normally y but I like l
Good mention- the "jump" button, as well as most sets of actions (like Tilt attacks) are mappable to whatever controller option you prefer. In this video, he used button visuals for the GameCube controller. Hopefully this elaborates a bit more for you!
The 'How to play'-guide in-game also states: "To jump, press the jump button". It's not beginner-friendly.
Jesse Z. It’s all explained in the in game video “tutorial” by “beginner” he doesn’t mean “started the game up for the first time 5 seconds ago”
@@bonelesscommunism4031 It doesn't matter now, I sold the game a long time ago because I couldn't figure out the controlls.
I'm pretty much a self taught smash player but, this guide still helped me out. Sometimes just listening to someone talk about something you already know it cements it better.
I''ve been playing Smash since I was 5.
I am 23.
...And I still didn't know a lot of this stuff.
...
I love this.

This is one of the best guides I've ever seen for Smash, period. I'll be watching the upcoming videos for sure!

reckon I will main kirby as well. my switch comes tomorrow with a copy of this. I wanted to play as the plant or jiggly puff though.

Came here for beginner tips and this mans talking about frames.
Me: I think I'm above a beginner level but I'll start this series from the beginning anyways.
Also me: *learns how to tech*
Easily the most in depth basics video. Paced well, and not condescending at all. Fantastic!
I don’t think there is a smasher, who is better at learning others than you.
You cover everything!
I loved this series in Smash 4
Happy it has returned
Thanks a lot for this! I didn't even know you could do half that stuff, this new smash is way more complex than the old ones I'm used to playing.
Sandjy Lima : I was going to ask why but I guess that makes sense.
Like Mario and the Pits...a little bit of everything for good fundamentals.
Palutena teaches some bad habits because of the s tbh, you end up learning to use dash attack more than you really should with anyone else 😂
I thought windboxes were removed 🤔
@@kamrenblake7105 she still has them

The art of Smash 4 series was one of my favorite videos from you, mad respect for making an update for ultimate Izaw
The production value, conciseness, and clarity of all of your guides makes them the best that exist by far.
5 years later and I still send these videos to my friends learning the game, they're simply the best guides. Thanks Izaw!
Glad you like them!
As someone who has played Ike since Brawl, I can confirm he is very beginner friendly since I was a kid when Brawl came out and was still ok with him! My sister played Meta Knight and cheesed me a lot, but Ike's always been a good starter character.
Haven't played smash in about 10 years, this has just melted my head 😂
Omg same last time I played smash was mele on my GameCube & im used to playing on an actual controller & not a switch
I played the first one on N64 and now jumping to this, Rip me
There are many beginner’s guide out there, but I didn’t understand most of it since they used some words like DI and so on. In contrast, your video is very easy to understand. Subscribed :)
It is a bit unfathomable to me that you do not have more subscribers than you do. With content as quality as this though, it's only a matter of time.
Two minutes in and I already feel overwhelmed haha
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm extremely new to smash and i had absolutely no idea how to play it, so this was really helpful!
These are the best kinds of tutorials, where every sentence is valuable (no fluff) and nothing is missed. Great job with this video!
I'm ready now that I've watched the video that zero made where he taught me how to walk
Raichu 26 this video also teaches you how to walk
@@brownsfan3290 And how to run :D
lol
tbh most player cant walk, and they cant use tilts
I've played since the 64 game and still can't do many advanced techniques like wavedashing or the one where you go back and forth very quickly.
Way better guide then that of ZeRo
That shit was confusing tbh
I like to take a shot every time ZeRo smacks his lips while talking... I don't recommend it on most of his videos tbh.
+the intro
No Name Just because ZeRo was the best player doesn’t mean he has the best guides

Bought the game yesterday and felt overwhelmed by how much I didn't know. This video is great to start! Will continue watching the other ones. Thanks!
This game is so technical, good job man i wouldnt even know where to start, best fighting series ever made hands down
Man your videos help me out so much, currently my muscle memory is leading to bad gameplay, but I'm beginning to correct myself more often and understand what I did wrong.
Masci Chief yeah same, Ive been playing Brawlhalla for a while and picked up a lot of bad smash habits
Always been a huge fan Izaw definitely see you growing a lot bigger
All of my friends play on Xbox and most of them think smash is a ridiculous game. This video is the perfect thing to show them since they’re giving the game a chance right now
So what happened?
I have played Smash Bros. since N64 days. Your clear and to the point explanation is greatly appreciated!
Yo wtf I just got smash and even though I've seen some videos before I didn't know there were SO MANY mechanics in this game. Really great video, you explained everything in a very understandable manner and didn't make it boring. You've earned my sub :)
Quality over quantity my friend
I've been trying to improve at Smash, I thought I was starting to get decent. Turns out I didn't even know what teching, this term I'd heard thrown around a lot and just assumed was for certain kinds of combo's or recoveries or something, was. Now I've got something new to practice.
Your video is much better than the official guide!
I’ve been playing smash with my little brother and he watches combo tutorials so I’m taking notes on your videos and it’s helping me get better!
i recently became the head coach for a high school esports team and this game is on the schedule i wont lie im out of my league but after seeing this video i have a better understanding of how to coach the game and use basic strategy ... again thank you ill be hitting u up on discord to talk to my students soon
This is definitely the best teaching video for beginners I've seen so far. Good job!
I’m hype as hell for your ultimate art of series!
Good luck new players. I can't wait to see how you guys will succeed and create new metas.
It's amazing how Izaw makes these videos to guide other players to get better at the game and I respect that from someone like him.
Thank you for making this and keeping it so straightforward.
Did my guy just casually explain dash dancing?
Legendary.
This game is too intimidating for me. Seems fun if you're good at it though, but there's so many mechanics I probably wouldn't be able to get the hang of it. Thanks for the video though
Same with me. I loved playing Smash bros 64 and melee but got so pissed off when I got and played Smash bros U on wii U
I honestly never knew about teching. Thank you so much!
This is a very good video.
It explains everything fast, and precise.
You can also short hop by pressing two jump buttons at the same time. I have ZR set to jump and it's made all the difference in my games, since I'll switch between X and Y for jumping based on what attack I'm doing.
Damn thats smart, gonna do that myself
Me: has been playing smash bros for over a year
Also me: struggles to understand anything more complex than doing an attack while pointing the move stick thing in a direction
Short hopping is hard for me because it's only a three frame window and I feel like a baby because of it
same...
If you tap A and jump simultaneously it automatically does a shorthop aerial, doesn’t fix issues with regular shorthops but hey it’s something
Remember that pressing Jump and Attack at the same time will let you perform an automatic short hop attack.
what button do you use to jump and what controller?
I have the same problem. Using a gamecube controller, first I thought it could be the shoulder buttons, but I tried Z and X and it is still as impossible/unreliable.
Guide was really good but for a completely beginner like me, didn't know which buttons should I use for some steps you explained.
Very specific explanations this is what I needed, thank you so much!!
This video gave me a deeper prospective
on gameplay.
Thank you for this, I’m currently teaching/coaching about 7 of my friends who want to get into competitive play and this will be great to share to them
train ME PLEASE
You make very good guides keep it up👍🏻
I finally think that I’m improving then I see this and my brain can’t comprehend how complicated it is...
Ive been playing smash for 6 years and I learned like 10 new things from this vid lol
Came here after watching Esam
Your voice is calming
2:54 Thank you. You just made me discover a way to taunt, online.
How?

Wow, I've played on and off for 14 years, and I just learned new stuff! : O
Idk how this video got 500 dislikes. This video by far is the most comprehensive and detailed tutorial I seen yet and its straight to the point and well laid out... good job dude👍🏽👍🏽💯
I’ve been playing smash for about 2 and 1/2 years now, but it’s still good to refresh the basics.
I'm surprised that's a begginer video. The amount of knowledge is over 9000... But for real tho that's a lot. That's my first smash game
I just wanted to play a round with my boyfriend, oh my god
You can still beat him with just a few tips and he will love it 😂 my tip is don’t button mash but combo mash
The king has returned!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! I’ve been everywhere trying to find decent guides and is have finally found one which explains LITERALLY EVERYTHING! Like I didn’t even know about parrying and teching! Thanks for the vid!
Thank you. Got a tournament in a few hours for my school bragging rights. Haven’t played in forever needed this
Thanks man, this vid helped my dad so now it’s somewhat fair match when we play.👍 great video btw you got a new sub
Sonicfox is watching this lol
YOOO MORE ART VIDEOS
I've been playing Smash for years and was always okay, but I decided to get better! This video was really helpful, there was a lot of stuff I learned! For example, one of my issues is that I never tech and roll too often. I'm really looking forward to getting better at the game :D
I am so happy I found this it was confusing and made so much sense at same time and helped instead of other tutorials just talking about mains and my will to play
