    such beautiful sculptures! I have made some with air drying clay and after drying for at least a couple of weeks, I gesso them, 2 layers. Then I paint them with acrylic paint. When that´s finished and dry, I varnish with spray varnish, either matt or gloss. Never have used Modge P. But have it on the shelves and will try it out next sculpture. Thanks 4 the tip.

    • @enondebelen
      @enondebelen  3 года назад +6

      Hello. Thank you. As stated in the video, I use Mod Podge to protect the clay’s natural color. Before, when I was still starting out with clay, I go immediately apply an acrylic varnish and the terracotta clay gets too dark (seen in the video). I guess this is because the clay absorbs the varnish. If you’re good with the color your sculpture gets when you immediately apply a UV Gel Topcoat, then you’re good. I just apply Mod Podge to preserve the real color. Then maybe I can apply another layer of varnish if I want to.

    Can you tell me how it’s held up? Looks like you shared this video 2 years ago.
    I have an old clay sculpture that needs protection. Years ago I put a temporary layer - an isolation coating - made with Golden soft gel and water (there’s a specific formula). I didn’t know what to put on it for the final phase so it’s only got that initial temporary coating, and has turned whitish over the years. Looks terrible.

      Volinkrien always make sure it’s dry. Then maybe a few layers of gesso first. It’s a universal primer also used in painting on canvases. If you paint straight on to the dried clay, I believe the paint will be absorbed by it. - so that’s dry, gesso, paint, then seal.

    • @enondebelen
      @enondebelen  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you may paint acrylics on a dried clay then apply a sealant after. Or, if you’re painting the entire piece, I think the sealant is optional (since the acrylic paint will act as a sealant already. Just an opinion). As for a sealant alternative, I really can’t recommend any because I haven’t tried anything else aside from Mod Podge. You can maybe check out some hardware stores near you and look for some spray options? Haha idk, that’s what I will do 😅

    Okay so I’ve never done clay before but I reallllly want to make a medium to large sized sculpture. I’ve RUclipsd and googled so so much and I’m still confused as to what clay to use! I’m guessing air dry clay is the same as water based clay or is it different? Also once I’m done with sculpting I want to paint it, can I just use acrylic paint? Or do you have any suggestions on what paint to use? Also should I fire it / put it in a kilin or will that ruin it? I read that baking clay softens it so I don’t want to do that. Hopefully if I’m happy with the finish result I want to keep it as a decorative piece in my house so I want it to last and I’m not sure how to ensure it stays put for longevity. Also after I paint it I’m guessing when it’s dry I put some sort of resin Ontop to seal it? And if I need to fire it that would be the last thing I do? Sorry for 100 questions 😂 I’m soo new and I wanted to post a comment on someone’s page that looks like they know the answers !

    • @enondebelen
      @enondebelen  3 года назад +3

      Answers: 1. I use water to soften the clay to make it more malleable. So yes, airdry clay is a water-based clay. 2. Yes, you can paint over it with acrylic. Just know that when you apply diluted acrylic over airdry clay, the paint will be absorbed by the clay (might make the sculpture soft). So I suggest you put gesso first (though I haven’t tried it myself). 3. You don’t need to fire or to put in a kiln an airdry clay. 4. Yes, sealing the sculpture will actually make it more durable. Resin is a good option.

    Hi , im not sure if it was asked in the previous comments , since it is a candleholder collection, is it fireproof? If the flame touches the sculpture will it be burnt (set the whole sculpture on fire as it may react to the sealing chemicals) and can't be cleaned? Or will it just leave some smoke marks and can be wiped?

    • @enondebelen
      @enondebelen  2 года назад +2

      Raw (airdry) clay = it’s still not air-dried. Airdry clay doesn’t need to be cooked. Polymer clay, ceramics, stoneware, porcelain do need to be cooked.
      It’s pretty normal for airdry clay to have cracks when it dries because the water evaporates when the clay dries, thus leaving cracks from the space the water once occupied. Though I heard that there are premium quality airdry clay that don’t crack.
      When it does does, you may patch the cracks with more clay. I have a separate video about it you may want to watch

      @@paperinashes I assume you have painted on the trinkets that are already dry. Maybe try to apply a thicker paint? Or don’t water down the acrylic if that’s what you do.

      Mysorepak Channel I used an airdry clay. The sculpture has a hollow because that’s the point. Also, I placed and lit a candle inside its “incompleteness”. It looked like the girl is burning with passion. That’s my style and I love it.
